Leeds: Laurens de Bock likely return could result in a challenging summer

Losing in the play-offs will have raised plenty of questions about the futures of a number of people at Leeds United.

It might have been ten days ago since that defeat, however, time certainly has not made things any easier at Elland Road as speculation continues to be rife about what will happen over the summer.

Marcelo Bielsa has been at the forefront of sections of the media with questions over his future, whilst some of their talented stars have also been the subject of transfer links as well, i.e. Jack Clarke and Tottenham Hotspur (Football.London).

However, one man’s future seems to be rather clear and it is not with Leeds, or potentially anyone else either.

According to a report by Voetbal Primeur, Laurens de Bock is set to return to Elland Road this summer after a disappointing loan spell with KV Oostende.

The Belgian outfit have recently appointed a new manager who wants to start with a clean slate and it appears the left-back did not do enough to convince him that his future was with him.

And, that news could make Leeds’ summer just that bit more challenging.

Football Insider reported last month that Bielsa had made it clear that he had no desire to have De Bock at Elland Road regardless of the division they would be playing in.

But, if he failed to make a positive impression on a side that finished towards the bottom of the Belgian Jupiler League Pro, then it would be hard to see anyone else looking to take a chance on the 26-year-old.

It would be difficult to see English clubs look to take him as well following a poor six months under Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom.

Having signed a four-and-a-half year deal when he joined in January 2018 for a £1.5million transfer fee (The Sun), he still has two years left to run, but Leeds will be hoping they can find someone to take him off their hands.

Leeds fans, do you think the club will be able to offload De Bock this summer or do you think it will be a tough ask? Let us know below!

Fixture In Focus Podcast – Newcastle vs Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

The Fixture In Focus Podcast returns this week, putting Newcastle and Liverpool’s Premier League clash under the microscope.

The Magpies’ season may be over after securing Premier League survival for another year but Liverpool need a win to realistically give themselves a chance of beating Manchester City to the title and this game is filled with intricate subplots.

Indeed, it could well be Rafa Benitez’s final home game at St. James’ Park with the Newcastle gaffer’s future at the club in serious doubt, while he’ll also have a say – for better or worse – in the title hopes of the club he almost took to the Premier League crown, amongst other achievements, back in the 2008/09 season.

Accordingly, host James Jones, #FIFpod regular Christy Malyan and guest George Dagless – the acting editor of Football League World – question Benitez’s mindset for this game, as well as Newcastle’s potential future without him.

The agenda also includes whether centre-back Virgil van Dijk deserved to win the PFA Player of the Year award, looking at which current Liverpool stars would and wouldn’t make it into Benitez’s runner-up team and scrutinising the entertainment factor of this almost-perfect title race.

West Brom: Ben Woodburn a Dwight Gayle replacement if needed

An uncertain future lies ahead for West Bromwich Albion.

Their new manager hunt is still up in the air, with many key players set to return to their parent clubs as well. If they can’t guarantee Premier League promotion this season, it’ll be a monumental task to do it again next time.

However, the Baggies are planning their future. Be it in the Premier League or another season in the Championship, they want to succeed wherever they are, clearly. West Brom are looking for young talent and according to reports (via the Scottish Sun), have turned their attention towards Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn.

Having recently been part of Sheffield United’s promotion gaining squad, Woodburn will return back to Merseyside soon. After that, he’ll probably be sent on another loan to gain experience at the top. A cunning forward, Woodburn adds a lot of options going forward due to his creativity, ability to drop back and dictate games as well.

A versatile player, Woodburn can also operate in midfield if needed. However, the 19-year-old is at his best playing forward. If Dwight Gayle is really to leave and they can’t hold onto Salomon Rondon, Woodburn can be a decent option to support Jay Rodriguez.

He’s clever with his movement, can link up really well and bring a hunger for goals.

West Brom have been successful with sealing loan deals recently. If they want to instil their attack with some unpredictability, getting the hard-working Woodburn can help them play attractive football wherever they end up next season.

West Brom fans, would you be pleased with Woodburn’s potential signing? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Manchester City fans on Twitter comment on Oleksandr Zinchenko

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City fans were full of praise for young Ukrainian international left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko following his performance in Tuesday’s 7-0 UEFA Champions League thrashing of Bundesliga side Schalke.

Pep Guardiola’s Citizens already led by one goal after the first leg three weeks ago, and got the job done in style at the Etihad Stadium to register a virtually unfathomable aggregate triumph of 10-2.

Zinchenko was a key part of the demolition job starting in the left-back position, rounding off a superb defensive and attacking performance with an assist for Leroy Sane to score City’s third of the night.

His form in recent times has clearly impressed City fans, many of whom didn’t expect him to be at the club beyond last summer, when he was linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers amid frustrations over a lack of playing time in Manchester.

They have been waxing lyrical recently and even more so after his latest showing in sky blue, some remarking that Zinchenko is “word class,” and others thanking their lucky stars that he remained at the Etihad, placing him above others players to put him into their strongest City starting XI.

Manchester City might be approaching their most important ever summer

Manchester City will go on a £350m summer spending spree according to the Daily Star and it would be needed if rumours of a looming transfer ban are true.

The Sun reported last month City could face a ban similar to that imposed on Chelsea for their recruitment of young overseas players. Like Chelsea, they could appeal the ban and then have the summer to buy players in preparation for when the hammer finally drops.

This means it could be a huge summer for both clubs, and City have some key areas they need to strengthen.

They need a replacement for arguably their most important player, Fernandinho, and a new centre half to replace the ageing Vincent Kompany and similarly ageing but less-capable Nicolas Otamendi. Indeed, they also need a new back-up goalkeeper with Claudio Bravo now 35-years-old and current number two Aro Muric not up to scratch.

Oh and we mustn’t forget they also need yet another new left-back despite spending around £50m on now-injury prone Benjamin Mendy, who’s the only natural option at the club.

And breathe.

So, that’s quite a list for Guardiola to tick off before a possible ban is in place. They didn’t do enough business last summer and that could come back to haunt them if they can’t pull off the deals they want to this time around. Guardiola has another two seasons on his contract after this one and wants to create a dynasty at the club, but that won’t be possible without buying the right players.

Fighting on all four fronts as Guardiola consistently aims to do means their squad must be watertight.

It must be able to cope with injuries to key players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte and also cope with the usual fatigue faced by playing a game every three days. It’s a tough ask, but get it right and City could set themselves up for an era of dominance in England and maybe even Europe.

The success of the long-term plan City have in could well rest on this summer if a ban is imposed after it.

So no pressure Guardiola, but this could be the most important summer of the club’s history.

Newcastle United: Rafa must stay despite club drawing up back up plan

Reports coming out of France suggest Newcastle have made Lyon boss Bruno Génésio their preferred choice should Rafa Benitez opt against extending his stay at St James’ Park beyond this season.

But the Newcastle Chronicle report that any approach, whether genuine or speculation, is very much likely to be a backup option, with getting Rafa to commit long-term being the number one goal.

Much like UK politicians are finding in their Brexit negotiations, it is remiss to not have an alternative plan in place, should your preferred choice not work out, no matter how much you hope it will.

And that would appear to be a sensible approach by the club, as much as everyone is united in their hope that it will not need to be acted upon.

L’Équipe claim that Génésio’s agent, Pini Zahavi, has been approached by the Magpies to ascertain the potential availability of the manager who guided his Lyon side into the last 16 of the Champions League.

His side lost to Barcelona, but after a plucky goalless draw in the home leg, had an outside chance of ousting the Spanish giants, before Lionel Messi inspired the Catalans to a 5-1 victory in the second leg.

But as we reported yesterday, the signs that Ashley is ready to back down in his stand-off with Rafa are there, and with the announcement of an overhaul behind the scenes at academy level are an indication that the manager may be getting his way.

Despite a contingency plan being the right move, fans will still be keeping their fingers crossed that Rafa is sitting in the dugout in August, and many suggest that no one else will do.

It remains to be seen whether potential boycotts, inspired by the @If RafaGoesWeGo Twitter group, materialise were he to leave, but it would be a dangerous game that Ashley would be playing to risk calling their bluff.

Everyone knows that what Ashley despises most is losing money, and if fans leave in their droves as a result of him failing to tie down their hero, it could end up costing him millions.

What are your thoughts on the revelations? Could it be genuine, or is it another agent trying to get an improved contract for his client? Will Rafa stay? Let us know below…
