Leeds fans impressed with fighting talk from star ahead of huge game

Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson still believes that the club will finish in the Championship play-off positions despite the odds being stacked against them with two fixtures of the campaign remaining.

The Whites spent a large chunk of the season in the top six but four defeats in their last six matches has seen them drop out at the worst possible time.

Despite being three points behind sixth-placed Fulham with an inferior goal difference to the Cottagers Jansson – who has quickly become a fans’ favourite following some brilliant and committed performances this term – is confident that the players will get the end of season result they want, starting against Norwich City at Elland Road on Saturday.

Leeds supporters were quick to have their say on the Swede’s comments via social media, and they were impressed with his attitude and fighting talk ahead of the crucial Canaries clash.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Celtic’s biggest Champions League upsets…

It’s another Champions League week and with it, another monumental task for Celtic to try and complete by beating Manchester City.

Things don’t get much harder than having to get a result on the opening day away at Barcelona, as the 7-0 drubbing highlighted, but this has to come close with City on a ten-game winning streak.

It’s certainly been an impressive start for the Manchester club but Celtic themselves are on fire in the Scottish top flight at least. A crushing 6-1 victory over Kilmarnock this weekend has seen them make the possibility of walking the league once again even more likely and as this fixture tonight is at home, they’ll be confident of a far better performance than against the Catalans.

You can bet one thing, the crowd are going to be right up for it as the Bhoys look to cause an upset and maybe, just maybe, Brendan Rodgers and his side will take inspiration from them and these times the club turned the tables to cause a giant-killing…

Celtic 2-1 Barcelona

On a cold November evening in 2012 the Catalans rolled into Glasgow expecting a victory but what they received was a ferocious atmosphere and a bloody nose.

Celtic ran themselves into the ground to beat Barca in front on their fans with goals from Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt sealing the victory. Barca threatened to spoil the party with a late Lionel Messi goal but could not as Celtic savoured a famous win.

Celtic 2-1 AC Milan

This wasn’t the Milan side we see now struggling in Serie A, this was the team that had just won their seventh European Cup.

In 2007 the Rossoneri were looking to defend their title but came unstuck in the group stages as the famous Celtic Park roared the side on to another great win.

The team will need just as much input from the fans tonight.

Celtic 4-3 Juventus

An absolute cracker back in October 2001 that marked Celtic’s arrival in the newly formed Champions League. It was the Bhoys’ first appearance in the competition in its new guise and they duly marked it with this performance.

Two goals from Chris Sutton and one from Henrik Larsson helped them on their way as Alessandro Del Piero and his men couldn’t do anything about it.

Man Utd picked the wrong Ant(h)ony! Academy graduate Elanga making Erik ten Hag's decision to sell him look foolish as £86m signing struggles

The Red Devils had the exciting Sweden winger on their books but decided to make an expensive and wild bet on the Brazilian instead

The date is February 23, 2022, the city is Madrid and Manchester United fans have a new favourite player as well as a new favourite chant. Their teenage idol has silenced the usually deafening Atletico Madrid supporters at the Metropolitano and all that can be heard is a new version of a 1990s smash hit.

"Rhythm is a dancer, Anthony Elanga, come and stop him if you dare," sing the visiting fans. "Comes from Scandinavia, he's United's saviour, scoring goals from everywhere." Elanga has just equalised for United in the Spanish capital and, four days previously, he had scored in a 4-2 win against rivals Leeds.

It helps that he has been with the club since he was 12 and is a pacey winger with tricky feet, following in a fine tradition of United favourites from George Best to Ryan Giggs to Cristiano Ronaldo. There is a sense that he is saving United, too, not just from defeat to Atletico, but also from a gloomy season in which they have already sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and suffered a series of humiliating defeats.

Elanga is also an exciting new figure for United fans to believe in less than a month after that shocking audio of Mason Greenwood emerged, leading to his arrest and his banishment from the squad. The future looks bright for Elanga at Old Trafford.

But fast forward two years and Elanga has left the club, joining Nottingham Forest last summer for a paltry free of £15 million ($19m), having made just five Premier League starts under Erik ten Hag compared to 14 the previous campaign under Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Meanwhile, Antony, the player who was signed for a whopping £85m ($107m) and took Elanga's place in the team, cannot even get in the starting line-up amid an injury crisis. As United head to Nottingham Forest in the fifth round of the FA Cup, the last chance to save their season, it is tempting to conclude that they put their faith in the wrong winger called Ant(h)ony…

Getty ImagesNot quite justifying the hype

It is worth pointing out that the initial hype about Elanga generated was slightly wide of the mark and the Swede was not yet ready to be United's saviour. He was still only 19 and struggled to sparkle in the second-leg defeat against Atletico Madrid and in the numerous other matches he started in the final stretch of that dismal campaign, in which United recorded their lowest ever points total in the Premier League.

But he had shown enough promise not to be completely written off either, yet that is what Erik ten Hag seemed to do when he took over later that summer. The manager did give Elanga three consecutive starts early on in the season against Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester and he did not quite deliver, but he can't have been playing too badly as United won all three. By that point, however, Ten Hag had effectively undermined the Swede by urging the club to sign Antony from Ajax and at an extortionately high cost.

The manager had naturally wanted extra reinforcements after the opening defeats to Brighton and Brentford but if there was one area of the squad that definitely did not need addressing, it was wide forwards. Antony's arrival took the number of wingers to four, joining Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Elanga. It was five if you counted Alejandro Garnacho, who had come on the pre-season tour and soon began knocking on the first team's door.

Garnacho's stunning performances deservedly saw him get more and more opportunities and Elanga continued to be marginalised. And this was despite the fact that Antony's promising start (three goals in his first three games, a club record) had quickly given way to a barren period in which the Brazilian contributed zero goals and zero assists in the league in the space of six months.

Elanga ended the campaign with just seven starts in all competitions. His last appearance was hardly a nice memory, being introduced for the final five minutes of the humiliating 7-0 demolition by Liverpool at Anfield, when United were already six goals down.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTwelve goal contributions

Elanga was one of many players the club had decided to sell last summer but one of the few there was legitimate interest in. Forest, who love a transfer nearly as much as Chelsea, were glad to take Elanga off United's hands and the forward knew he had to make the move to get his stalling career back on track.

"It is the right time now for the perfect next step in my career. I'm someone who lives for football and I need to be on the pitch every week doing what I love," Elanga wrote in an emotional farewell statement. "We'll always have 'Rhythm is a dancer'. It meant the world to me and my family every time that we heard that chant."

Elanga has been superb for Forest, lighting up an otherwise tricky season for the Tricky Trees. He needed less than two minutes of action off the bench away to Arsenal to get his first assist for Forest and did not take long to get his first goal, the only strike in a historic win at Chelsea.

In 18 starts and seven appearances as a sub, Elanga has five goals and seven assists in the Premier League. That's more goal contributions than any other Forest player and indeed any United player. And it's a darn sight better than Antony, who has no goals and no assists in the league despite making 20 appearances.

Getty'I wanted a fresh start'

United might well be looking back at the decision to get rid of Elanga as one of many recruitment errors they have made in the last few years and which Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS experts will be seeking to put right now they have taken control of the club's football operation.

Looking at how well Elanga has done at the City Ground, Forest got a real bargain while United badly sold themselves short in accepting just £15m for a player who has out-scored every United player bar Scott McTominay and Hojlund. Elanga, however, does not appear to be looking back.

“Sometimes football is like that, it might not always work somewhere,” Elanga told The Times. “I had seen what he [Ten Hag] did at Ajax so I was looking forward to it but I just didn’t get the opportunities.

“It was difficult but it was needed because I wanted to play and I didn’t want to spend another season just playing 10 minutes or not playing for 10 games. I wanted a fresh start but I knew it wouldn’t be easy leaving a club that I had been at for nine years."

Getty ImagesAntony still struggling

While Elanga has thrived away from United, Antony has continued to flop while remaining with the Red Devils. And the City Ground has mixed memories for the Brazilian. Last year he broke his six-month goal drought by scoring for United and got a rare assist by setting up Diogo Dalot in a sweeping move.

But in December he had one of his worst ever games for United in a grim 2-1 defeat. To make matters worse, he was outshone by Elanga. Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel did not hold back in his criticism: "He doesn't give much to the team. He frustrates his team-mates. It's really frustrating. He's had an opportunity for a long time, this is a player that hasn't scored this season, he's not made an assist and he's not scored, it's like he's not really understanding the game."

Antony has not started a league match since that drab performance at the City Ground. He has, at least, managed to get off the mark for the season, getting his only goal and assist in the 4-2 win over fourth division Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round.

After that match he gave a defiant interview in which he vowed to put things right. "I fought hard to reach the levels of playing for this club, I know I can build on yesterday’s performance and continue to show my qualities," he said. "I pushed myself day after day for better performances.

"I will continue to completely close myself off to improve and play the football that United hired me to do. The whole club, every fan, deserves the best from each one of us. United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, where everyone wants to be and it's where I want to build my story."

Explained: Why Arsenal signed David Raya on initial loan instead of permanent transfer amid summer interest from Chelsea, Tottenham & Bayern Munich

The reasons for David Raya joining Arsenal on an initial loan, rather than a permanent transfer, have been explained by the goalkeeper’s agent.

Keeper bid farewell to BrentfordWas wanted by heavyweight outfitsOpted to battle Ramsdale at the EmiratesWHAT HAPPENED?

The Gunners moved to bolster their shot-stopping department during the summer window when putting a deal in place with Premier League rivals Brentford for Spain international Raya. The north London outfit were able to fend off interest from Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich in order to push an agreement for 2023-24 through.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Raya’s representative, Jaume Munell, has told of why a loan was put in place: "Arsenal showed interest for the first time three years ago in 2021. They tried to buy him but Brentford didn’t want to sell him at any price. After they bought [Aaron] Ramsdale that was an easier option but David has always been the priority. This summer, he had just one year left on his contract with Brentford and Arsenal was the club that showed the most concrete interest and have always been our priority.

"Tottenham also was interested and made an official bid but it was refused because was lower than the €40m [£35m] that Brentford wanted to sell him, also Bayern Munich was interested and had an amazing offer but with no buy option included and for this reason, we’ve not accepted it. Bayern Munich didn’t understand our refusal because they thought that Raya would have been the back-up keeper at Arsenal but as you can see it’s not like this. Also Manchester United and Chelsea made an inquiry but nothing concrete. The formula of the deal is a loan with the option to buy, Arsenal had some Financial Fair Play issues and this is the reason why they haven’t bought him with a permanent transfer."

WHAT THEY SAID

Raya is competing with Ramsdale for minutes at Arsenal, with both men having filled starting duties and bench roles this season, and Munell says his client is at Emirates Stadium due to the presence of Mikel Arteta and Gunners goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana. He added: “Arsenal is a team with a lot of quality and a lot of young players trained by a top coach Mikel Arteta, they have maximum ambition. Arsenal have a clear identity, and a clear style of play that really works, as you can see by the results. Last year they were close to winning the Premier League, I believe that this year they can win it and try to win the Champions League, it’s tough but they have the quality and the ambition to try to do it. Inaki and Arteta were key for the deal, they have been determined for the choice that we made to play for Arsenal, the club have a project and a philosophy that fit completely for David.”

Raya has become Arsenal’s go-to option between the sticks in Premier League and Champions League competition, with England international Ramsdale having to make do with Carabao Cup outings since losing his place back in September.

How will England replace captain Leah Williamson in the Lionesses' 2023 Women's World Cup squad?

After the Arsenal star was ruled out of this summer's tournament with an ACL injury, who will step up in her absence?

On Friday, England were dealt the news that they will be without captain Leah Williamson for this summer's Women's World Cup.

It's a hammer blow for so many reasons. The Arsenal star is the Lionesses' leader and an excellent centre-back who forms part of such a formidable back line.

Not only does head coach Sarina Wiegman need to select the personality best-suited to taking her armband, but also the right player to replace her in the heart of defence.

The latter might not have the most straightforward solution. With the versatility that exists throughout the England player pool, there are a number of possible options and the route the coach takes could have quite a domino effect.

🏆 TOP STORY: England captain Williamson to miss World Cup📣 HAVE YOUR SAY: Do Arsenal have any chance of winning the title?!🚨 MUST READ: Toxic CR7 isn't getting his own way at Al-Nassr

GOAL takes a look at the candidates to captain the Lionesses at the 2023 Women's World Cup, who could replace Williamson in the starting line-up and who might take her spot in the squad as a whole with the reshuffle that may be needed.

GettyMillie Bright

When Williamson was missing from England squads during the first half of the season due to an ankle injury, it was Millie Bright, her centre-back partner, who took over the role as the Lionesses' captain.

The Chelsea defender is currently sidelined with her own knee injury and expected to be out for several weeks. But if she is fit in time for the World Cup, it is expected that she will wear the armband.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLucy Bronze

Another candidate for captaincy is Lucy Bronze. The Barcelona full-back has assumed the role before but not under Wiegman. She boasts a wealth of experience, having won 18 major honours – including three Champions League titles – with five different clubs.

Bronze is likely to be near the top of the list when it comes to the coach's options for the armband and could certainly come into consideration if Bright does not recover from the injury that has kept her out since late March.

GettyAlex Greenwood

Like Bright, Alex Greenwood has worn the captain's armband for England this season, leading the team out in the Arnold Clark Cup in February when they faced Italy. Not only is she a contender to take Williamson's role as skipper, though, but also her spot in the centre of defence.

Greenwood has often been Wiegman's go-to to play there when Williamson or Bright have been missing, or when Williamson has been deployed in midfield, and she is probably the most likely candidate to partner the latter at the 2023 Women's World Cup now.

GettyJess Carter

When England were without Bright during the April international window, Wiegman moved Greenwood into centre-back and had her role at left-back, that she played in during February's games, filled by Jess Carter.

The Chelsea star is a very versatile player, capable of operating in any position in the backline and also in midfield. With Williamson dropping out of the line-up, moving Greenwood inside would open up a spot in the XI on the left of that defence that Carter could well be chosen to occupy.

É compreensível – lamentou Rodolfo Landim, presidente do Rubro-Negro carioca.

– CONFIRA A TABELA COMPLETA DO BRASILEIRÃO

Report by George Dobell16-Dec-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe full-house crowd might have come to bid farewell to Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, but it was another member of the trio of senior Sri Lankan batsman, Tillakaratne Dilshan, who led the home side to a crushing 87-run victory in the final ODI of the series against England. The result wrapped up the series for Sri Lanka 5-2.The thought of trying to find replacements for Jayawardene and Sangakkara – both of whom may be playing their final ODIs at home – is enough to drive a Sri Lanka supporter to Arrack, so it must have been reassuring to know that Dilshan will be around to help with the transition.Dilshan, playing his 300th ODI, not only made his 18th century in this form of the game and, in the process, became the fifth Sri Lanka batsman to reach 9000 runs in ODI cricket, but he also claimed three top-order wickets to snuff out any chance of a successful England run chase. While Dilshan’s reputation might be as a relentlessly aggressive batsman, here he showed the other facets to his game: the subtly, the calm and the ability to read the match situation. With Jayawardene and Sangakkara falling early, he was obliged to rotate the strike, see off a demanding spell from Moeen Ali and provide a platform from which others could attack in the final overs. For a time it looked as if Jayawardene, who has announced he will retire from international cricket after the World Cup, would reward the spectators with a vintage performance. He cracked the first ball of the innings – a long-hop outside off stump from Chris Woakes – to the boundary with a familiar cut and, in the next over, twice pulled more short balls from Harry Gurney to the boundary. With runs leaking from the seamers, Alastair Cook introduced the offspin of James Tredwell into the attack in just the seventh over. But with only two fielders outside the ring, Dilshan skipped down the pitch three times to drive Tredwell for two fours and a six in an over that cost 15 runs. But it was not to last. In attempting to pull another short delivery from Gurney, Jayawardene instead guided the ball off the top-edge to Woakes on the deep backward square leg fence. The groans from the crowd told the story eloquently. Still, by the end of the mandatory Powerplay, Sri Lanka were 66 for 1 and set for a high score on a pitch that looked full of runs.England’s spinners – and Moeen in particular – began to apply some pressure. Joe Root only conceded one boundary in his five overs, while Moeen did not concede a four until his seventh over and at times found sharp turn.Tillakaratne Dilshan struck nine fours and a six in his 18th ODI century•Getty Images

He also claimed a key wicket. With Sangakkara slightly tied down, his eyes must have lit up when he was presented with a full toss. But instead of punishing it, he picked out the fielder at mid-on and became the second man to walk off basking in the reception of an adoring public. Sangakkara had, when he scored 6, surpassed Ricky Ponting’s record for the most international runs across all formats in a calendar year. Ponting scored 2833 in 2005.Dilshan concentrated on rebuilding for the next dozen overs. He did not hit a boundary between the 15th and 27th overs, instead concentrating on seeing off a demanding spell from Moeen. The Powerplay awoke him. Gurney, unable to take the opportunity he was given to impress ahead of the rested Steven Finn, was hit for successive boundaries when his attempted yorkers came out as full tosses and Dilshan completed his century from a relatively sedate 122 balls with nine fours and a six.It was a full toss that accounted for him, too. Perhaps Chris Jordan was fortunate that the delivery was not called no-ball, but Dilshan swung it to deep midwicket to depart with six-and-a-half overs to go and left Sri Lanka in danger of falling perhaps 35 or so short of the 300 for which they were aiming. But that only allowed Thisara Perera and Dinesh Chandimal more opportunity. Together they thrashed 63 from 29 balls in a blistering fifth-wicket stand and saw Sri Lanka plunder 65 runs from the final six overs of their innings. Twice Perera lashed three successive boundaries – once off Woakes when he was punished for dropping short and once off Jordan whose length temporarily deserted him completely – before he then followed a pulled six off Woakes with a four driven through the covers when the bowler over-compensated.Perera’s half-century occupied only 23 balls – only Sanath Jayasuriya has hit a quicker one for Sri Lanka – while Chandimal drove Moeen for a six and Tredwell for four as Sri Lanka took the game beyond England. It left England requiring a record second-innings total at the Premadasa – Sri Lanka made 301 against India in 1998 and still lost – and not for a moment did they threaten to go close.Moeen Ali, making room to cut, was bowled first ball; Alex Hales, replacing Ravi Bopara in the side for a last chance to impress ahead of World Cup selection, picked out long-on and Cook, having been dropped and been perilously close to leg before, was well caught at slip by Jayawardene. The sight of Cook waiting for the umpire’s decision, even after a pretty clear catch had been confirmed by an illustrious fellow international player, summed up his ever more desperate – and increasingly unseemly – battle for survival in this format.James Taylor was caught off the glove from a good short ball from the impressive Suranga Lakmal and Eoin Morgan, who scored fewer runs in the series than Cook, failed again when he missed a sweep.A seventh-wicket stand of 66 in 12.3 overs between the impressive Root and Woakes narrowed the gap between the sides, but it was never likely to change the result. When Woakes yorked himself off Dilruwan Perera, playing instead of the injured Sachithra Senanayake, and Root was leg before attempting to reverse sweep, England’s chase faded away. It is the ninth time in their last 12 ODIs that England have been bowled out within their 50 overs and means they have lost 10 of their last 13 ODIs.The sight of Jayawardene claiming the final wicket, his part-time offspin luring Tredwell down the pitch, left the crowd in ecstasy. He will be greatly missed far beyond the borders of Sri Lanka.
