'Grassroots football is too important': Inside the Gatorade 5v5 Global Finals – a platform for young players on their way to the top

Young footballers from around the world gathered in Istanbul for the Gatorade 5v5 Global Finals hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous winners

It’s Champions League final day in Istanbul and a young goalkeeper is kneeling on the pitch, his head pointing to the sky, his eyes closed and his hands locked together. He is praying, asking for divine intervention in the game of his life after an epic journey to the final.

But it’s not Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson or Andre Onana of Inter who is kneeling. It is the young goalkeeper of Honduras AFFI and the stage is not the Ataturk Olympic Stadium but the UEFA Champions Festival and the last boys' match of the Global Finals, a grassroots tournament for boys and girls aged 14 to 16.

To the teenager praying for help in the imminent penalty shootout, it is just as important as the match City and Inter will play that evening. He and his team, began their journey in Honduras, winning their local five-a-side tournament and then becoming the national champions.

That earned them a place in the final tournament in Istanbul. For some, it was their first trip abroad. Over two days of intense matches at a training centre owned by Turkish giants Fenerbahce, they booked their place in the boys’ final against a team from Thailand.

Playing for Champions League final tickets

Thailand take the lead with an early goal on the counterattack immediately after Honduras have hit the post. The Latin American side equalise right before half-time though and the match ends 1-1. A penalty shootout is needed.

As well as the prestige of winning a global tournament, there is an added incentive for the four finalists: the winners will go to the Champions League final.

The goalkeeper’s prayers are answered as he makes two saves in the shootout. His team-mates think they have won after his second save but the referee informs them they have one more penalty to take, and it is the goalkeeper who must take it.

Both sets of teams huddle together, and the goalkeeper, still wearing his gloves, steps up. When the ball hits the net there is an eruption of joy from his team-mates. The Thailand players sink to the floor.

The girls' final is played immediately after and Club De Lo Prado from Chile are crowned champions after beating a team from Venezuela, also coming from behind in the final to win.

    Creating opportunities

With such emotion on display, it is little wonder that Mark Kirkham, PepsiCo's Chief Marketing Officer, calls the tournament “one of the most special things we do”.

The tournament began in Latin America in 2015 and was brought to Europe for the first time in 2016, coinciding with the Champions League final in Milan.

The Finals have followed football’s biggest match around since, and in 2019 a total of 56,000 children participated in the event from local level all the way to the finals. The only exceptions were the 2020 and 2021 finals due to coronavirus restrictions.

“Covid had a negative effect but we never wanted to let it go, grassroots football is too important,” Kirkham adds. “We don't even sell Gatorade in Turkey but it doesn't matter, what's important is that Gatorade is creating opportunities for these kids.”

'Ancelotti is a great human being'

Kirkham has just addressed the young footballers alongside Andriy Shevchenko, a Champions League winner in 2003 with AC Milan and former Ballon d’Or Winner.

Shevchenko, who says playing in youth tournaments was a crucial part of his journey to becoming a professional footballer, was appointed as a 'confidence coach' and gave a passionate team talk to inspire the young players.

Shevchenko played for some of the most renowned coaches in football including Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho. But he named Valeriy Lobanovskyi, his former boss at Dynamo Kyiv, as his most inspiring coach.

"He’s a legend for Ukraine and a legend in world football. He brought discipline to my life, helping me understand that I am a role model, football players are very important figures in society. I understand the responsibility not only for myself, but the image for the country and the club," Shevchenko said.

The former striker also gave insight into why Ancelotti, who has won a record four Champions League titles, including the 2003 title with AC Milan alongside Shevchenko, has been so successful.

“Carlo Ancelotti is just a very nice and inspiring person. He is very charismatic and has a great relationship with the players, he’s amazing in the dressing room and creates a very good environment and chemistry with the team," he said.

"I learnt a lot about his style in dealing with the staff and how he motivated the players. Sometimes his role was to calm the players in a very difficult emotional moment, he’s a great human being and a great coach."

    A launching pad for stardom

As he watches the teenagers compete, Shevchenko is reminded of the youth tournaments he played in while growing up in Ukraine and aspiring to be a footballer.

"The competition means a lot. When I was growing up I always loved football, I grew [as a player] thanks to some similar tournaments," he told GOAL. "I was growing up in Ukraine and had a school tournament. I played for my school. This kind of opportunity was awesome. We could see potential players come out from this tournament.”

Shevchenko is right, and if previous years are anything to go by, he could well be looking at future stars of the game. A whole host of players have gone on to great things in men's and women's soccer after participating in Gatorade 5v5.

Goalkeeper Natalia Giraldo and midfielder Ilana Izquierdo have gone on to play for Colombia's senior team and have the chance to go to the Women's World Cup this summer. Mariana Zamorano plays for Colombian giants America de Cali along with Giraldo.

Alejandra Vanegas plays at college level in the US with the University of Central Arkansas. Juan Camilo Asprilla has represented Colombia's men's team at under-17 level.

Two players have gone on to thrive in futsal (indoor football): Harrison Santos plays for FC Barcelona while Simon Zapata is a Colombia international.

Musiala doesn't deserve it to end like this! Germany winners, losers & ratings as it's yet ANOTHER World Cup failure – and don't mention the VAR

There was huge drama in Group E as a controversial VAR call sent Japan through, while Germany were knocked out at the group stages yet again.

It was too little, too late for Germany as they crashed out of the World Cup despite beating Costa Rica 4-2 on Thursday night.

Hansi Flick's team were dominant from the beginning of the match as they chased the vital victory they needed to surely put them through. They did their bit and got the three points but with Japan incredibly beating Spain it wasn't enough.

The tension was evident. Germany buckled initially as Costa Rica found a way back into the game, with Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rudiger producing moments of madness to allow their opponents to take a shock lead.

Serge Gnabry and Kai Havertz were there to rescue Flick's side, however, with the Bayern Munich winger chipping in with the opening goal and a vital assist, while the Chelsea forward came off the bench to score twice.

Having lost to Japan, drawn with Spain and then allowed Costa Rica to give them a real scare in what should have been an easy win going by the first-half performance, few would argue that Germany really deserved a place in the next round of the tournament.

They were simply too inconsistent and sloppy in the key moments in this competition and although they may turn their anger towards VAR following a controversial call in the clash between Spain and Japan, they must first acknowledge their own shortcomings in Qatar.

    The Winners

    Jamal Musiala:

The young attacking midfielder has shown throughout this tournament why he is so revered in Germany and this game was yet another example. He was a real threat for his team with his dribbling and his neat and dangerous passes. He hit the post on two occasions in the second half after Costa Rica equalised and looked like the man most likely to get his team out of danger after they surrendered the lead. He had so much more to offer this tournament and he doesn't deserve it to end like this. One of few German players to enhance their reputation, and transfer value, despite heading home early.

    Kai Havertz:

He certainly proved to Hansi Flick that he should have been involved in the starting XI in this game. Thomas Muller got the nod ahead of the Chelsea forward but he came on to take the Bayern Munich star's place and was immediately effective with the 2-2 goal. He then added his side's third, getting on the end of a Serge Gnabry pass. What might have been had Germany made it through, with Havertz's confidence having been restored.

Stephanie Frappart & the match officials:

The referee made history as she was at the front of an all-female team controlling a men's World Cup match for the first time. The referee and her team did not make any big mistakes in this match and were fully in charge, letting the game flow while assistants Neuza Back and Karen Diaz Medina were valuable in their support.

    The Losers

    Manuel Neuer:

Two big blunders from the goalkeeper in the second half saw Germany let their lead slip. He spilled the initial header that allowed Yeltsin Tejeda to spring into action and fire in the equaliser, then he was caught simply flapping at the ball as Juan Pablo Vargas put his team ahead with 20 minutes remaining. A terrible collapse from the Germany legend considering he pulled off a vital save in the first half to deny Keysher Fuller.

    Antonio Rudiger:

He was exposed in each half by Fuller. He did nothing to stop the full-back as he was presented with a golden opportunity to equalise in the first half and was too easily shrugged off. Then he barely closed him down to stop the Costa Rica star sending in the cross that resulted in his side's equaliser. Simply not good enough from a defender that should be relied upon to stamp out such danger.

    Thomas Muller:

He was barely involved throughout the game as he moved out wide and deep in an attempt to retrieve the ball. It was a completely ineffective performance from the Bayern Munich veteran as he allowed those around him to dictate and threaten the Costa Rica goal. His replacement managed to influence the game immediately, whereas Muller was simply a ghost for the most part. That may have been his last ever game for his country, and what a sad way to bow out.

    VAR:

Once again the video assistant referee has been involved in another controversial call at the World Cup and Germany will feel hard done by. Japan were awarded a goal against Spain despite claims that the ball had gone out of play. Even after the replays it is tough to tell who was correct but Japan being awarded that goal has essentially knocked Germany out of the competition as a draw in that other match would have seen Hansi Flick's men progress.

    Germany Ratings: Defence

    Manuel Neuer (4/10):

He pulled off a strong save to deny Fuller late in the first half and was on hand to deal with the subsequent corner but his interventions in the second period were woeful. He let the ball slip after saving a shot that allowed Tejeda to equalise and then completely fell apart for the second goal.

    Joshua Kimmich (7/10):

Always pushing up from out wide and available for a pass throughout the first half, in which he did not have too much to do defensively but he was alert and quick to get back when he needed to. He moved into the midfield once Klostermann came on for the second half to help improve Germany's use of the ball from the centre of the field.

    Niklas Sule (5/10):

Did nothing of note throughout this match.

    Antonio Rudiger (5/10):

Barely put up any challenge to Fuller when the Costa Rica star was presented with a goalscoring opportunity. The full-back simply shrugged him off before Neuer came to Rudiger's rescue with the save. He put no effort into stopping Fuller in the second half in the lead up to Costa Rica's eventual equaliser, either.

    David Raum (6/10):

Made a quality cross to set up the opening goal and was up and down the left side of the field all night, staying wide and looking to get the ball into the box for the forwards. However, he barely tried to cut out the ball that found its way to Fuller and gave Costa Rica a chance to equalise in the first half.

    Midfield

    Leon Goretzka (5/10):

Had an early header saved by Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas but otherwise made very little impact in this game before he was substituted at the break.

    Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

The Manchester City midfielder sat deep and mostly tried to move the ball on to Musiala or wide to the full-backs. He kept the ball circulating well but Costa Rica's deep defence often made it hard to pull off more ambitious passes.

    Jamal Musiala (8/10):

Looked a threat right from the beginning of the game, finding space outside the Costa Rica box and forcing Keylor Navas into making a save and earning a corner. Shortly afterwards he fed Serge Gnabry through for a dangerous chance but the winger was offside. Musiala had plenty of movement to make sure he was always available for a pass and kept pressing the opposition to win back the ball. Every time he got on the ball and dribbled he looked capable of creating something. Top stuff from a top player.

Pizzagate, Giggs' wondergoal and the greatest Arsenal v Man Utd games of Wenger's career

Arsene Wenger takes charge of one last game at Old Trafford with the Gunners on Sunday, and there have been plenty of memorable ones in the past

Getty1March 1998 – Overmars’ scream-inducing Old Trafford winner

Going into the game, champions United led Arsenal by nine points but having played an extra three games. Arsene Wenger, in his first full season at Highbury, knew his side would be landing a significant blow were they to win on Manchester soil.

And with 10 minutes remaining Marc Overmars slid home a now iconic goal, producing scenes of raw emotion in the away end as Arsenal fans began to believe a first title in seven years was within their grasp.

“If they win their games in hand they will go ahead of us, but they’ll start dropping points towards the end of the season, there’s no question about that,” Sir Alex Ferguson claimed afterwards.

Ferguson was wrong. The win at Old Trafford was the second of 10 straight successes for the Gunners, who would wrap up a first title under Wenger with two games to spare.AdvertisementGetty2April 1999 – Giggs' wonder goal

It might be easier to list the things this iconic FA Cup semi-final replay didn't have! David Beckham scored first but the pendulum seemed to have swung to Arsenal when Dennis Bergkamp equalised and Roy Keane was then sent off for a foul on Overmars.

In the dying seconds, Phil Neville brought down Ray Parlour for a penalty, prompting some United fans to head for the exits. But Peter Schmeichel brilliantly saved Bergkamp’s spot-kick to send the game into extra time.

Then came THAT Ryan Giggs goal as the Welsh wizard beat Patrick Vieira, Lee Dixon, Martin Keown and Tony Adams on a wonderful run before striking high past David Seaman and whipping off his shirt in frenzied jubilation.Getty3August 1999 – Keane at the double at Highbury

Freddie Ljungberg’s opening goal was just a taster in this clash as the growing disregard between the two clubs reared its head.

Keane broke through a gap to equalise, but moments later was involved in a flashpoint with Vieira in which the United skipper kicked out after playing a pass and the Frenchman responded with a head-butt. Jaap Stam then grabbed Vieira by the throat as both sets of players flooded in.

After referee Graham Poll decided no cards were warranted, Keane pounced on a deflected Giggs shot to net the winner, but there would still be time for late controversy as Keown’s apparent injury-time equaliser was ruled out for an infringement on Raimond van der Gouw.ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Getty4May 2002 – Wiltord wins the league in Manchester

Their Old Trafford victory in 1998 had felt like a league winner because of the momentum swing but four years on Arsenal would become champions for certain with another memorable 1-0 win.

In a game that was typically bad-tempered at times, with Phil Neville perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch after a particularly bad challenge on Sylvain Wiltord, it always felt like Arsene Wenger’s side were going to find the winner.

It came on 56 minutes, as Mikael Silvestre’s loose pass allowed Wiltord to break and play in Ljungberg. The Swede’s shot could only be parried by Fabien Barthez, and the French front man became the toast of north London by sliding home the rebound.

Recuperado, Geromel é a principal novidade no treino do Grêmio

Smith's heroics too late for Lancashire

Lancashire 144 and 7 for 1 need another 342 to beat Nottinghamshire 272 and 220Tom Smith’s effort with bat and ball has sustained Lancashire at Trent Bridge•PA Photos

If Lancashire do go on to save – or even win – this game, they will owe a great deal of their success to Tom Smith.Smith not only top-scored with the bat to help his side avoid the follow-on, but also claimed a five-wicket haul to precipitate a remarkable collapse in Nottinghamshire second innings. It was his first five-wicket innings in first-class cricket since August 2010 and only the third of his career.Unfortunately for Smith, it will surely make no difference. Lancashire’s target of 349 to win in a minimum of 105 overs would be testing in any conditions. On an early-season pitch that continues to provide disproportionate assistance to the seamers, it will require something approaching a miracle. The pitch has eased, though, and is becoming ever slower so a draw should not be completely out of the question. Luis Reece’s departure five minutes from stumps, playing on as he attempted a lavish pull, was hardly the ideal start. The Smith-inspired collapse was the most dramatic episode of a day on which 15 wickets fell. Nottinghamshire lost their last seven wickets for just 32 runs including a spell of six wickets for 14 runs in 46 deliveries. Smith, gaining sharp movement off the seam, claimed 5-11 in his final spell including Michael Lumb, edging a perfect delivery that forced a stroke and moved away sharply, and Alex Hales, who left one which nipped back to hit his off stump.By then, though, it was probably too late for Lancashire. The damage inflicted by the debacle of their first innings was too great and any hope they had of keeping their eventual target to manageable proportions was ended by Riki Wessels’ impressively fluent innings.Wessles, feasting on an attack that dropped short far too often for the conditions, struck 10 fours and two sixes – both slog-sweeps off Simon Kerrigan – to hammer a nail in Lancashire’s hopes. He also punished a weary-looking Anderson, thrashing him through the covers and clipping him through mid-wicket. Anderson eventually produced a yorker to end Wessles’ innings, but by then the game was all but gone.Anderson’s mood was not improved when Kabir Ali, who had earlier bowled with impressive skill, missed a straightforward chance at mid-on, simply failing to lay a hand on a mis-hit from Wessles, who had 85 at the time.It could have been worse for Lancashire. Had Kabir been caught at first slip by Wessles in the morning session, they would have been 84-8 in their first innings and facing the prospect of the follow-on. As it was, Smith averted that possibility with a patient innings – it took him 24 balls to get off the mark – and, after adding 25 for the eighth-wicket with Kbair, added another 38 for the ninth with Kerrigan. It took the return of Luke Fletcher, strangely over-looked until the 26th over of the day, to end the resistance. Fletcher struck with his first two deliveries to polish off the innings.Lancashire might also reflect that they erred tactically, too. Under the amended playing conditions this year, the home county decide whether to make the heavy roller available in the game and each side can then utilise it for a maximum of seven minutes once in the match. Nottinghamshire made it available but, by not utilising it ahead of their first innings, Lancashire sentenced themselves to batting on a pitch that had started damp and therefore become indented in Nottinghamshire’s first innings.Lancashire’s logic was that rain would curtail play on the second day and they did not want to waste the use of the roller. But, as it happened, the 33.2 overs they faced was enough to see their top six dismissed and set the tone for the game. Nottinghamshire, by contract, used the heavy roller ahead of their second innings and saw the batting conditions improve markedly. Lancashire are highly likely to use it ahead of the final day, but the damage is surely already done.Still, they insist they are looking to provide opportunities for their batsmen and the final day of this game – perhaps Peter Moores’ final day of Championship cricket as Lancashire coach – certainly offers one. The recklessness shown by Reece, the latest in a long-line of opening batsman that has included Smith and, improbably though it sounds, Stephen Parry (against Durham in 2009), suggests that the search for a reliable top-order batsman goes on.If the final day of this game goes the way of Nottinghamshire, Lancashire may have to reconsider their admirable but self-defeating attitude towards an overseas player.
