Former chairman of selectors Kiran More has said the decision to recall 38-year-old Rahul Dravid to the limited-overs side for the England tour reflected poor planning by the current selection committee.”I think they have made a lot of changes recently,” More told . “And the changes they have done are not looking ahead. I don’t know what their thinking is but I know things have not gone very correctly.”More said that while the decision to recall Dravid was because a batsman of his calibre was needed to hold the batting together in tough conditions, it wasn’t a forward-thinking decision. Dravid scored two centuries in the first two Tests in England but last played an ODI for India in September 2009, during the Champions Trophy in South Africa. Dravid, who was surprised at his recall, said he would retire from ODIs after the England series.”They needed an experienced batsman, looking at some of the players who have been exposed on this tour. In English conditions you need to have a batsman who can carry the innings and that’s the reason he [Dravid] has been picked.”After the World Cup they (selectors) should have taken a call and thought about building a team for the next World Cup also,” More said. “To win another World Cup or dominate world cricket, there needs to be proper planning but that’s not happening. It’s been a little haywire.”India’s pace attack for the limited-overs leg of the England tour comprised Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and Vinay Kumar. Zaheer was subsequently ruled out of the series and left-arm seamer RP Singh was named his replacement. The selectors – led by chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth – left out fast bowler Sreesanth, who is part of the Test squad, from the 16-man limited-overs squad and More said such decisions would send out wrong signals to the players.”The players are also confused. Now Sreesanth is not part of the one-day team though he is bowling well. I don’t know what confidence you are giving to Sreesanth. He was part of the World Cup team but he is not part of the [current] one-day team. Yusuf Pathan could have played a few games … he’s not a bad player. They are not sending proper signals to the players.”

Michael Carberry made a triple-hundred nine months after recovering from a career-threatening injury•Getty ImagesMichael Carberry and Neil McKenzie wrote themselves into the record books with a partnership of 523 as Hampshire’s clash with fellow relegation candidates Yorkshire at the Rose Bowl ended in a draw. Carberry was playing his third match since returning from a serious illness that kept him out of the game for nine months.Carberry and McKenzie came together with Hampshire on 59 for two in response toYorkshire’s first innings total of 532. The pair then thwarted the visitors for the little matter of eight hours and 135 overs with Carberry going on to make an unbeaten 300 and McKenzie scoring an equally valuable 237.Hampshire, who remain winless and at the foot of the County Championship first division table, eventually declared at 599 for 3 when Carberry reached his triple-century.That left only time for Yorkshire to score 40 without loss before both sides agreed on the draw. But it was the giant partnership of Carberry and McKenzie that will be remembered in a high-scoring contest.Carberry’s monster innings came off 427 balls and included 43 fours and two sixes. South African McKenzie, who also made the best score of his career, faced 412 balls, hitting 25 fours and two sixes.Yorkshire’s nine-man attack had no answer to Carberry and McKenzie whose partnership was the highest for the third wicket in the history of the County Championship. It beat the previous best in 1997 by Worcestershire’s Graeme Hick and Tom Moody, ironically against Hampshire. The stand was the third highest in the history of the Championship and the ninth highest in all first-class cricket. At one stage, it looked as if they would threaten the all-time best partnership of 555 between Yorkshire’s Percy Holmes and Herbert Sutcliffe against Essex at Leyton.Carberry, who been sidelined by illness for long periods since making his only England Test appearance in Bangladesh last year, said: “This was only my third match back in the team and I cannot believe it has gone so well. The pitch was perfect to bat on and Neil and I kept each other going.”It has been well documented that I had blood clots on the lung and it has taken nine months out of my life. I am lucky just to be playing again so to get 300 exceeded all my expectations.”The partnership came to an end at 523 in the 151st over when McKenzie lifted a gentle catch to mid-on where Gary Ballance held on to give left-arm spinner David Wainwright a wicket his perseverance had warranted.Among the other records to go was Hampshire’s highest stand for any wicket, overtaking the 411 put together by Robert Poore and Teddy Wynyard against Somerset at Taunton way back in 1899.Carberry’s previous best was 205 against Warwickshire two years ago and the only chance offered during the mammoth partnership came from McKenzie soon after surpassing his previous best of 225, a return catch which Wainwright failed to hold.

Líder nato, sempre a mesma pessoa…

Viramos amigos dentro do futebol. Ele me chamou.

– Cuido-me muito quando me perguntam isto.

Kulusevski delivers big statement to Conte

Dejan Kulusevski delivered a big statement to Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte with something of a dream display at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

A 95th-minute strike from Harry Kane sealed a dramatic and late victory over table-topping Manchester City.

The home outfit thought they had snagged a point just moments earlier when Riyad Mahrez converted a spot-kick after Cristian Romero was adjudged to have handled inside the area by VAR.

But it was the Sweden international who kept composure to serve the ball on a plate to the 28-year-old to head home a stunning winner. And earlier in the match, Kuluseveski had found the net himself, opening the scoring in the fourth minute.

Heung-min Son beat the offside trap to square the ball to the deadline day signing to slot home with aplomb.

He’d go on to have a major influence throughout the whole game to help Spurs end their run of three successive league defeats with an impressive victory over the defending champions.

‘Worked very hard up and down the pitch and showed what a talent he can be. His cross for Kane’s winner at the end was perfect,’ described football.london reporter Alasdair Gold in his post-match ratings column.

Indeed, the 23-year-old dynamo was a force at either end of the pitch – as per SofaScore, he also registered two tackles, two clearances and one interception, on top of his two direct goal contributions.

It was a display that Conte would have absolutely loved to witness as it was the ideal mix of hunger, desire and quality he demands from his players, and it poses a question over whether or not he should replace Lucas Moura in the starting XI for the long run.

‘Son and Kane were the match-winners but Spurs’ were more fluid with the Swede in the side than they have been with Lucas,’ claimed the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, who also waxed lyrical about the calmness of his play in high-pressure situations.

Moura’s form over the last few games has been disappointing, so it could be an easy switch for the Italian head coach to make. It’ll certainly be a hard task in dropping the £27m-rated attacker after such an outstanding outing – his first start for the club, too.

Kulusevski, dubbed “explosive” by ex-Sweden and Villa star Marcus Allback, should definitely be in the starting XI going forward.

AND in other news, Conte could sign his new Vidal at Spurs with “exceptional” £25m monster, Guardiola loves him…

Kumara, Janoda take Chilaw Marians to title win

Chilaw Marians CC won the Under-23 Youth Division I title for a fifth time by virtue of the first innings lead against Nondescripts CC in the drawn three-day final at the SSC

Cricinfo staff06-Sep-2010
ScorecardChilaw Marians CC defended their moderate total of 242 against Nondescripts CC to earn a vital first innings lead and win the Under-23 Youth Division One title for the fifth time after the drawn three-day final at the SSC.Put into bat, Chilaw lost opener Geeth Alwis off the first ball, and his opening partner Lahiru Weragala followed six runs later, both falling to Sri Lanka’s Under-19 World Cup captain Chathura Peiris. Geeth Kumara, top-scoring with 98, steadied the innings with support from captain Umesh Karunaratne and Buddi Samarawickrame. But, from a position of strength at 214 for 4, Chilaw lost their remaining six wickets for 28 runs as Peiris finished with 6 for 50.NCC would have fancied their chances at this stage, but they crumbled to 88 for 5 as Chilaw’s opening bowler Arosh Janoda ran through the top-order. A 75-run stand between Shashrika Pussegolla and captain Laksiri Illeperuma raised NCC’s hopes of a revival. At 163 for 5, the game was evenly poised but Illeperuma was run-out for 35, and Chilaw captured the remaining four wickets cheaply as NCC were dismissed for 175. Janoda took 6 for 46, including the last wicket of Pussegolla who made 57.With over four sessions left, Chilaw did not press for a win and preferred to bat out the game, finishing on a mammoth 527 for 6. The final day was highlighted by the batting of Kumara and Karunaratne who completed hundreds and shared a fourth-wicket stand of 260. Kumara struck 17 fours and two sixes in his career-best 181 off 336 deliveries and Karunaratne hit 16 fours and two sixes in his 139-ball 123.Karunaratne praised the performances of Kumara and Janoda. “It was the dedication and understanding of the players that enabled us clinch the title. Right throughout the season we were never short of talent. Everyone contributed towards our success. When one player failed there was always another to take over. That was the spirit with which we played throughout the tournament,” said Karunaratne. An elated coach Mahesh Weerasinghe put the win down to discipline. “I had no problem with them which was one of the main reasons for our success. The contribution made by assistant coach SK Silva and fielding coach MMA Rohitha should also be commended.”Eight members of the winning team were rewarded by Bank of Ceylon Chairman Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe and Deputy General Manager Sam Samarasinghe who offered them employment at the bank. The bank sponsors the Chilaw women’s cricket team. Chilaw won the Under-23 title previously in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Scotland make final after tight win

Scotland experienced some hiccups in what was meant to be an easy chase, but held their nerve to beat Afghanistan by two wickets in Rotterdam and sealed their place in the World Cricket League Division One final with Ireland.Through a combined bowling effort, they skittled out Afghanistan for 141. Left-arm spinner Ross Lyons bagged three wickets and was supported by seamer Gordon Goudie and the leg-spin of Moneeb Iqbal, who took two wickets each. Afghanistan had begun poorly, losing two wickets inside the first five overs and despite a middle-order resistance led by captain Nawroz Mangal, who top scored with 38, they collapsed to lose their last six wickets for 43.Opener Fraser Watts held firm for Scotland in their chase with his patient 46, and at 105 for 3 it seemed they were on track for a comfortable win. But Mangal, seamer Hamid Hassan and offspinner Mohammad Nabi caused a scare, nipping out five wickets in quick time, including the last three for just five runs. However, amid the stutter, Iqbal fought the pressure with a guarded 15, off 36 balls, to keep one end stable and help his team to victory with more than six overs to spare.Ireland completed their fifth consecutive win in the ICC World Cricket League Division 1 by beating the Netherlands by 39 runs at Amstelveen and entered Saturday’s final as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. The victory was made possible by Ireland’s middle and lower order, which led the team to 177, and their bowlers, who skittled the Netherlands for 138 in the 39th over. The stars of Ireland’s defense were spinners George Dockrell and Paul Stirling, who picked up four wickets each. Dockrell claimed 4 for 35 while Stirling’s four cost only 11 in 6.5 overs. They cut through the Netherlands line-up, preventing partnerships and stifling the run-rate. Peter Borren top scored with 47, and his 73-run partnership with Bas Zuiderant shepherded the innings from 59 for 4 to 132, giving the hosts hope. Borren’s dismissal, however, triggered a collapse and the last six wickets fell for six runs.Ireland had also suffered a collapse in their innings, that of the top order. They slumped to 59 for 5 before John Mooney anchored the innings with a half-century. Useful 20s from Andrew White and Nigel Jones propped up the innings. Mark Jonkman and Bernard Loots took three wickets apiece for the Netherlands.31-year-old Loots, who replaced Maurits Jonkman in the Netherlands side only on Thursday evening, was thrilled with his debut performance. “I heard on Tuesday that I may be playing and the clearance came through yesterday so it’s been exciting and also happened quite quickly,” he said. “I bowled decently although it was very disappointing to lose as that would have crowned the day for me. I’m realistic about my role in the side – I know I’m there more as a container than a striker but I only went for two runs an over today and I’ll settle for that and the three wickets were a great bonus.”In the clash of winless teams in Schiedam, Canada thumped Kenya by six wickets. Canada’s captain Ashish Bagai made his third half-century in five matches to guide the chase after the bowlers had restricted Kenya to 153.Such a one-sided encounter didn’t seem likely when Kenyan captain Maurice Ouma (38) and Collins Obuya (23) had steered them to 105 for 3 by the 32nd over. However, the Kenyan lower-order collapsed spectacularly, the final seven wickets going down for 48 runs, with the last five only collecting 13. New-ball bowler Harvir Baidwan was the most successful of the Canadian bowlers, taking three wickets.Canada were in a bit of a bother at 71 for 4, but Bagai and Zubin Surkari stitched together an unbroken 83-run stand to reach the target with more than 14 overs to spare. Bagai scored the bulk of the runs, hitting nine fours on his way to a 78-ball 61. The two sides face off again on Saturday to in the fifth place play-off.

Everton eye Tottenham ace Alli

Some Everton fans have been left raging over some transfer news that has emerged on Dele Alli.

Speaking on The Athletic’s The View from The Lane Podcast (via Everton Blue Army), journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has revealed that the Goodison Park faithful could now consider signing the Tottenham Hotspur midfield player on loan towards the end of the January transfer window, but there has not been any progress on that as of yet.

Alli has fallen away from the player he once was at Spurs, where he scored 50 goals and made 36 assists in the Premier League from midfield between the 2015/16 and 2019/20 seasons (regular England international.

However, just one goal and one assist has followed in the top flight over the last two terms (2019.

Nonetheless, it seems strange that the Merseyside club would look to loan him in on this kind of form, and so it is not surprising to see so many Toffees against the idea.
