Journalist drops Spurs claim involving Rangnick

Speaking to BILD (via Sport Witness), journalist Christian Falk has dropped a major claim on a possible new manager for Tottenham Hotspur involving Ralph Rangnick – with the reporter stating that Rangnick has been ‘offered’ the role and talks ‘will come’ given he is on the shortlist.

The 62-year-old, who recently emerged as a candidate for Spurs, is now climbing up the managerial shortlist in north London after blows involving previous targets Julian Nagelsmann and Erik Ten Hag.

The former has agreed to become the new manager of German giants Bayern Munich while the latter has signed a new deal at Ajax, dealing two big hits as Spurs hunt for their Jose Mourinho successor.

Falk drops major Tottenham claim

However, in a positive twist, Falk now believes that Rangnick has been ‘offered’ the role – dropping the latest from what he has heard in regards to the manager chase.

“We have already talked about how Rangnick and Tottenham could become hot, and I have now heard quite specifically that he was offered the job,” he told BILD (via Sport Witness).

“In any case, he is on the shortlist, and that means talks will come.

“From the club, he still hears a bit of scepticism, but he’s already held talks with Manchester United and Everton in the UK in the past that never quite worked out.

“There must have been reasons for that, we don’t know them all, but it’s nice that he’s now being discussed.

“They need a new Tuchel, and in the UK, they believe the German coaches have done a lot of groundwork, which could be a big ace in the hole for Rangnick to Tottenham.”

Transfer Tavern take

After the big announcements involving Nagelsmann and Ten Hag, we believe that Spurs are quite right to offer Rangnick the job as he appears to be the next best option.

Described as a ‘perfectionist’ by RB Leipzig striker Yussuf Poulsen, he has also been credited with influencing Premier League bosses Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp and Ralph Hasenhuttl (The Telegraph).

Spurs are also on the hunt for an attack-minded boss who can reinstall that exciting brand of football, and Rangnick’s label as the ‘father of gegenpressing’ certainly throws him into this category of manager.

Villa fans react to Heaton exit report

Tom Heaton will consider leaving Aston Villa this summer in search of guaranteed first-team football, according to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans.

Aston Villa are apparently keen to keep him and will offer him a new contract. They recognise his ability as a goalkeeper and also value his ‘leadership skills’.

Heaton, though, will listen to offers from elsewhere before he considers any proposal from Villa.

Injury spoils Heaton’s spell at Villa

The ex-Manchester United ‘keeper moved to Villa Park in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £8million and held down the number one spot until he suffered an ACL injury away to former club Burnley on New Year’s Day.

Almost a year on, he returned to the substitutes bench, providing back-up for Emiliano Martinez. Of course, the exceptional form of Martinez has meant that no matter what Heaton shows in the occasional cup fixture he has no real chance of cementing himself back in as the number one.

Fan feed Villa Report relayed the news, and here’s how supporters reacted.

Villa fans wouldn’t begrudge Heaton a transfer

– Difícil (explicar a eliminação). Nossa equipe lutou bastante.

Reds’ Kelleher handed devastating injury

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been handed another devastating injury blow ahead of a potential international debut.

The 22-year-old stopper was originally included in Stephen Kenny’s Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming international break, with the Boys in Green now unfortunately confirming that he has had to pull out.

An ongoing abdominal tear has kept him on the sidelines at Anfield, with the problem also now seemingly putting paid to his chances of appearing for his country this month in World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Luxembourg, as well as a friendly versus Qatar.

It will be a hugely disappointing development for Kelleher as he was in line to not only make his debut for his nation but also stake a claim for the Number 1 shirt with regular stopper Darren Randolph also ruled out with injury.

That certainly would have been another remarkable step for the young stopper who has seized his chance under Jurgen Klopp this season.

Following an injuriy to Alisson Becker, Kelleher was able to make both his UEFA Champions League and Premier League debuts, making five appearances in all competitions for the Reds.

He had conceded just three goals within those five games and managed to keep two clean sheets.

However, since appearing in the 1-0 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield, Kelleher has been ruled out with his injury, not even appearing on the bench since, meaning Adrian played when Alisson was given compassionate leave follwing the death of his father.

There were fleeting hopes that Kelleher would return in time for Liverpool’s clash with Fulham two weeks ago, but he was still ruled out with a problem that now looks slightly more serious than first feared.

Devastatingly for Kelleher, it not only looks to have disrupted his debut season in the Reds’ first-team but it has also brought his short-term international aspirations down, too.

Given that he would have likely have been given a chance to feature for his country, and stake a claim to be Ireland’s number one, Kelleher will be gutted to have been ruled out for the next few weeks.

Mabbutt gives verdict on Kane’s Villa penalty

Former Tottenham defender Gary Mabbutt has exclusively told Football FanCast that Mike Dean was right to award Harry Kane a penalty against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Midway through the second-half of Spurs win at Villa Park, a careless sliding tackle from right-back Matty Cash allowed the England to hammer home his 17th consecutive penalty in Tottenham colours.

Having latched onto Lucas Moura’s pass, Kane looked certain to cut back onto his right foot. But after seeing Cash about to recklessly dive in, the Spurs striker allowed the ball to trickle out of playing, and waited for the contact.

Dean then needed no second invitation in pointing to the spot, leaving Kane with the task of converting past ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to seal a much-needed three points for Jose Mourinho’s side following Carlos Vinicius’ first-half opener.

And Mabbutt agreed with Dean’s decision. He told Football FanCast:

“Cash has just come back into the side and I think that showed. In that particular situation, all Kane could do there was to get the ball into the box, and all Cash had to do was to try and block what Kane could have crossed into the box – he only had a small area to cover, which could have been done by staying on his feet.

“He decided to slide in and Harry saw the challenge coming in, and the referee saw what everyone else saw, a player taking Harry’s legs.

“It was quite clear that Harry wouldn’t have got the ball into the box and seeing the challenge coming in, Harry didn’t go ahead with what he was planning to do. He took a heavy challenge and I thought the referee was correct in giving a penalty.”

Everton transfer claim dropped on Aarons

Alex McLeish has dropped a transfer claim on whether he thinks Max Aarons would be a good signing for Everton or not.

The former Rangers and Scotland international manager was giving his reaction to a recent report from Sky Sports that stated that the Goodison Park faithful are considering a summer move for the Norwich City star, who valued him at between £30m and £35m, as a long-term replacement for Seamus Coleman.

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish has claimed that Aarons would be an ‘excellent’ replacement for the Republic of Ireland international:

“Recruitment is vital. That, for me, is a guy who knows his way about on a football field.

“Aarons would be an excellent signing and replacement for the captain. He has been fantastic, has Seamus.

“I nearly had him as a kid at Birmingham, he played a trial game for me when he was 16. At that time, we didn’t invest in young players, I think it was about £100,000 or something.

“David Sullivan, David Gold – we decided would keep the money for someone more experienced coming in. There you go, there’s one we lost.”

Aarons would be a great replacement for Coleman

There is no doubt that Aarons would be a great replacement for Coleman in the long-term, given that the latter is 32 years of age now and will be turning 33 in October.

Aarons is only 21 and has a bundle of potential, which can be fulfilled under Carlo Ancelotti. The right-back has impressed so far in the EFL Championship in the 2020/21 term, helping his team keep no fewer than 11 clean sheets while also averaging 1.8 clearances, 1.3 key passes and 1.2 successful dribbles a game (Sofascore).

Yes, there is a difference in quality between the Championship and the Premier League, but the Englishman has already gained the experience of playing in the latter last season.

Nonetheless, the Merseyside club should seriously consider wrapping up a deal for him in the summer.
