Newcastle: James Tarkowski wants to join

Newcastle United target James Tarkowski wants to move to St James’ Park during the January transfer window, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards says.

The lowdown

The journalist reported as far back as 9 October that the Burnley defender was expected to become one of the first signings of the new regime. Tarkowski is valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt but, significantly, his £50,000-per-week contract at Turf Moor expires at the end of the season.

Newcastle and Burnley are currently level on 11 points, with both sides in the Premier League relegation zone, although the Clarets have two games in hand.

The latest

In addition to his compatriot Kieran Trippier, Edwards has said that Tarkowski is keen to join the Magpies.

He tweeted: “I wouldn’t get Trippier printed on the back of any #nufc shirts just yet but this looks like a goodbye to me. As for Tarkowski, he’s not exactly playing his best games for Burnley at the moment. I’m told he also wants to come to #nufc but Burnley very reluctant to sell”.

The verdict

It isn’t all that surprising that Tarkowski would want to make the switch. While Burnley are in a marginally better position right now because of their games in hand, he could be looking at the trajectories of the respective clubs.

Sean Dyche’s side flirted with relegation last season, ultimately finishing 17th, and they’re hovering in dangerous territory at the moment. Newcastle, on the other hand, have recently become one of the richest clubs in world football and will hope to assemble a squad this month which can charge up the table.

If they do survive this time around, they can begin to think about establishing themselves as a top-half club in the next couple of seasons. Why wouldn’t Tarkowski want to be part of that prospective revolution?

Expert fires warning over Ryan Jack injury

Rangers have to be careful that Ryan Jack’s current injury absence doesn’t become a long-term issue, according to expert Ben Dinnery.

The Lowdown: Jack sidelined by injury

Jack has been an excellent performer for the Gers since joining from Aberdeen in 2017, scoring 11 goals in 133 appearances.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has confirmed that the midfielder will be absent until after the winter break, however, having not started a league game since February. Injuries are unfortunately a massive talking point with the talented midfielder, as some fans were even ready to give up on him after this latest blow.

The hope is that Jack will be back on the pitch as soon as possible but a warning has been fired to the Scottish Premiership champions from Dinnery, who runs PremierInjuries.com.

The Latest: Expert fires warning

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery claimed it would be reckless to rush Jack back after such a long absence, risking him being out until near the spring:

“Rangers need to be careful with Ryan Jack. It doesn’t matter how much work you do behind the scenes, you can’t replicate the cut and thrust of playing for the first team competitively.

“Players suffering soft tissue problems are particularly susceptible in the first 28 days when they are reintroduced to the rigours of competitive football.

“So this doesn’t come as any great surprise. It’s very, very frustrating for the player, but it’s just the way it is. You need to manage them so carefully. A setback that can keep you out for two weeks could easily turn into eight.

“So you always have to err on the side of caution when it comes to muscle problems.”

The Verdict: Too important risk

Jack has suffered a hugely frustrating period in his career in 2021, and while there is a need to get him back on the pitch regularly, any rushed thinking now could be a disaster.

The 29-year-old must only return when he is fully fit, hopefully enjoying the same influence he did before his setback earlier in the year, with Steven Gerrard hailing him as ‘fantastic’.

Jack has enjoyed a 90.7% pass completion rate in his rare time on the pitch in the league this season, which bodes well, but another major setback in his recovery as he approaches his thirties could be the end of his time as a consistent option for the Light Blues.

– Sempre queremos ganhar, buscar a vitória.

Injured Mortaza out of Zimbabwe ODIs

Shakib Al Hasan will retain the Bangladesh captaincy for the five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe at home with Mashrafe Mortaza failing to prove his fitness following knee surgery. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced a 14-member squad for the first three ODIs starting October 27 and the most notable inclusion is that of the left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, who missed the recent tour of Zimbabwe after pulling a hamstring.Mortaza underwent arthroscopic surgery on both knees in Melbourne after injuring his right knee during the tour of West Indies in July. He was confident of returning after six-weeks’ rehabilitation but chief selector Rafiqul Alam said that Mortaza would not be able to resume bowling until the second week of November. The ODI series ends on November 5.”He (Mortaza) is definitely not playing against Zimbabwe,” Alam told reporters. The selectors left out four players who toured Zimbabwe for five ODIs in August – opener Imrul Kayes, allrounder Mehrab Hossain Jnr and seamers Syed Rasel and Mahbubul Alam. Returning to the squad is fast bowler Rubel Hossain, who left the Zimbabwe tour midway after suffering a side strain. His replacement, Dolar Mahmud, retains his place.Bangladesh comprehensively beat Zimbabwe 4-1 in the ODIs in August and before that, swept the ODIs 3-0 against an understrength West Indies.Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Tamim Iqbal, Junaid Siddique, Mohammad Ashraful, Raqibul Hasan, Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Enamul Haque Jr, Rubel Hossain, Dolar Mahmud, Shahadat Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Nazmul Hossain

Adrian Barath brightens West Indies' gloom

From the wreckage of West Indies’ lamentable Brisbane campaign has emerged a performance worthy of the highest order of recognition

Alex Brown at the Gabba28-Nov-2009Seldom can positives be drawn from an innings defeat, particularly one sealed inside three days. Yet from the wreckage of West Indies’ lamentable Brisbane campaign has emerged a performance worthy of the highest order of recognition; one that augurs well for the future of the browbeaten game in the Caribbean and the Test format in general.Adrian Barath’s sublime second-innings century heralded the arrival of a batsman anointed by Brian Lara, his esteemed countryman and mentor, as a figure capable of breaking the region’s cycle of mediocrity. At just 19 years and 228 days, Barath became the seventh youngest batsman in Test history to post a century on debut, and the youngest ever West Indian, breaking the 79-year record held by George Headley. “I’m sure he’ll be proud of this achievement,” Barath said of Lara, who identified genius in the then 11-year-old during a net session at the Queen’s Park Oval.Barath’s innings on Saturday came at a time when his more seasoned team-mates were folding like laundry day to a ravenous Australian attack, and featured powerful cutting, the quality of which Lara himself would have approved. At the time of his dismissal, Barath had scored 104 of West Indies’ total of 154, and was recognised with the rarest of sporting accolades: a rousing standing ovation from the fiercely parochial Gabba crowd.Barath had an early taste of the celebrity realm he seems destined to inhabit when, while walking the streets of Brisbane this week, he passed by Britney Spears. Breathless, he returned to the team hotel to inform his fellow tourists of the pop starlet’s shortness in stature. “You’re not so tall yourself,” they replied.Barath is spotting Chris Gayle over a foot in height and, more pertinently, 82 Tests in experience. But whereas Gayle was coerced into a pair of cheap lbws and as many ill-advised video challenges, Barath took the attack to the Australian bowlers with assuredness and precision beyond his years. He raced into the 90s with a brutal pull to the boundary off Mitchell Johnson, and reached triple figures by cutting Shane Watson through point, also for four. Big game temperament in a small man’s frame.Already, Barath has achieved a feat that has thus far eluded Gayle in his Test career: a century against the Australians. His efforts, coupled with the determined half-century from fellow rookie Travis Dowlin in the first innings, signalled a welcome departure from West Indies’ of the past decade, in which a select group of senior batsmen were relied upon to prop up their underwhelming colleagues.”It’s a privilege to play for West Indies against Australia in Australia,” Barath said, his orthodontic braces gleaming in the television lights on account of his broad grin. “It was really emotional to me, very exciting and I enjoyed every minute of it.”Barath is a player to romance the purists, both for his appealing technique and his attitude to international cricket’s traditional format. With Gayle – the all-swing, all-bling poster child of the Twenty20 revolution – sitting to his right, Barath told reporters at the post-match press conference that, to him, Test cricket would always retain its primacy. CLR James, another son of Trinidad, could not have been more eloquent.”A lot of youngsters these days talk Twenty20 and 50 overs, but all the youngsters understand the stature of Tests as the ultimate form of the game, the true test,” he said. “Representing your country at Test level is the highest position in the West Indies. All young players realise that Test cricket is what it comes down to.”

Liverpool: Fans slam Robertson’s comments

A number of Liverpool supporters have criticised Andy Robertson’s post-match comments following the Reds’ 2-2 draw at home to Brighton.

Jurgen Klopp’s men produced a curiously flat showing against the Seagulls on Saturday afternoon as they dropped two precious points in the Premier League title race.

Early goals from Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane looked to have set Liverpool on their way to a comfortable victory, but they got sloppy as the minutes ticked by.

In the end, Brighton were more than worthy of a point – indeed, they arguably deserved to win – and the Reds were left ruing a disappointing day at the office.

Speaking after the game [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Robertson bemoaned the result and said that Liverpool have “got to be better than that.”

Liverpool fans slam Robertson after post-Brighton comments

Robertson’s own form has not been convincing, with WhoScored ranking him a lowly 15th among Liverpool’s squad for his performances so far this season.

He had come in for criticism from some Kopites over recent displays and was well below his best yesterday, winning only one duel, being dribbled past twice, failing to make an impact getting forward and giving away the ball 13 times (SofaScore).

These Reds fans took to Twitter to criticise the Scotland defender’s remarks after the match.

LFC fans unhappy at Edwards news

Liverpool fans are not happy with the news that RB Leipzig are targeting Michael Edwards to be the club’s new sporting director.

Edwards has played an important role in the club’s rise to the top of Premier League and European football since joining as the Reds’ sporting director in 2016. He has overseen a number of game-changing transfers, such as the Philippe Coutinho sale that allowed the Reds to capture Alisson and Virgil van Dijk.

Anfield correspondent James Pearce has even gone so far as to call the Merseysiders’ transfer guru the ‘visionary behind Liverpool’s remarkable rise’.

As it stands, Edwards is set to depart at the end of the season (via The Athletic) and, although it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he signs a new deal, other clubs are interested. According to Dominic King, sources in Germany believe Leipzig are eager to hire Edwards after Markus Krosche left for Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer.

King shared the news on his official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Edwards news
