Former Celtic striker Craig Beattie believes that Dundee United target man Lawrence Shankland would be a good fit for the Hoops.

The 24-year-old, who scored his first Scotland goal in the weekend win over San Marino, has attracted scouts from both Celtic and Rangers in recent weeks, as reported by the Daily Record.

Speaking on Si Ferry’s Keeping the Ball on the Ground podcast [via Evening Times], Beattie said that Shankland would be better suited to the green and white side of Glasgow given their creativity in the final third.

He told Keeping the Ball on the Ground [via Evening Times]: “I think he’s good enough for Celtic and he suits Celtic’s style more than Rangers’.

“The way [Alfredo] Morelos plays he creates a lot of chances and makes a lot of his goals himself. Whereas Celtic are a bit more creative in the final third with their wide players and [Ryan] Christie.

“I think he’d be more suited to Celtic and he could quite easily go into Celtic and do a job there.”

When looking at the respective goal involvements of the Celtic and Rangers squads, Beattie is correct in saying that the Hoops provide greater creativity from their wingers and attacking midfield players.

Right-winger James Forrest has been their leading assists provider this season with nine, with centre-forward Odsonne Edouard and attacking midfielder Christie setting up five goals each. Left-winger Mikey Johnston is next on the list with four assists to his name, while fellow wide players Jonny Hayes, Lewis Morgan and Mohamed Elyounoussi each have two. [via TransferMarkt]

In contrast, two of Rangers’ three top assists providers are full-backs, with centre-forward Morelos also in the top three. The only wingers in Steven Gerrard’s squad with two or more assists are Sheyi Ojo (four) and Jordan Jones (two). [via TransferMarkt]

Celtic also seem to have a better spread of goals across their squad than Rangers have. The Hoops’ top three scorers this term – Christie (11), Edouard (nine) and Forrest (seven) each occupy different positions, while five more wingers or midfield players have scored at least twice. The bulk of Rangers’ goals come from the centre-forward duo of Morelos (14) and Jermain Defoe (12), with only two midfielders or wingers scoring more than once this season. [via TransferMarkt]

Celtic appear to have a greater abundance and balance of creative attacking players going by those figures, which supports Beattie’s claims.

Shankland has been in tremendous form for Dundee United this season, scoring 13 goals in just eight Championship games, although some may question whether he could be a potent scorer at Premiership level – he failed to find the net in 17 top-flight games for Aberdeen in 2014/15, but he was only a teenager then and has since developed considerably as a player.

Celtic’s abundance of creativity from the wings and attacking midfield areas could supply him with plenty of ammunition if he ends up at Parkhead, as Beattie has suggested.

Simon Mignolet has told The Daily Mail that he was frustrated in his final year at Liverpool due to a lack of game time, but fans have shown little sympathy for the goalkeeper.

The Belgian had been number one before Jurgen Klopp’s arrival, before losing his place to Loris Karius prior to the arrival of Alisson, who featured in all but two of Liverpool’s games in 2018/19.

Despite having two years remaining on his contract, Mignolet said he was desperate to depart this summer, revealing that his patience with his manager had run out due to “giving everything”  but receiving “nothing in return.”

It is a natural response from a player who spent a year on the sidelines when he could have featured regularly for another side, but Liverpool fans aren’t ready to show too much empathy despite him making 204 appearances for the club, as they believe he would have played more if he was good enough.

The former Sunderland player joined Club Brugge over the summer for a reported £6.4m, and he has since kept six clean sheets in nine matches for his new team.

Bruno Fernandes has told Sporting Lisbon that he wants to move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, per The Mail on Sunday.

What’s the word?

Spurs have been heavily linked with a swoop for an attacking midfielder this summer, with the London Evening Standard reporting last week that the club were “determined” to sign either Giovani Lo Celso of Real Betis or Fernandes.

And it now appears that the Portugal international is keen on a transfer, too, The Mail reporting that he has informed the club of his desire to move to London.

Of course, the English transfer window shuts on Thursday and it remains to be seen if the two clubs will reach an agreement.

The report claims that Spurs have made a bid but that it falls short of the Portuguese side’s valuation, which is said to stand at £64m.

A breakthrough at last

Spurs need to sign some players.

The club have only bought Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon this summer to strengthen the first-team squad – Jack Clarke, of course, was loaned back to Leeds United following his acquisition.

Bringing in Fernandes, a player who scored 32 goals last season in all competitions, would go a long way to ensuring that Spurs’ squad is as strong as it can possibly be for the beginning of the 2019/20 season.

Of course, he would ease the burden on central striker Harry Kane, as well as adding an extra dimension to the attacking midfield ranks.

A fee of £64m is steep, but one imagines that price may fall after the player supposedly aired his own desire to move.

The transfer season is upon us and for Manchester United, it is starting to feel like their biggest summer in some time.

A poor end to the season which saw them lose eight of their final 12 games will likely see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under immense pressure right from the get-go at the start of next season, so making the right signings this summer could be crucial for the Norwegian.

But according to Sky Sports, United are interested in West Ham defender Issa Diop, who despite only playing in the Premier League for a single season has caught the attention of the Red Devils.

United are in need of a big shake-up in defence after conceding 54 Premier League goals last season, the second-worst return in the top half. But here are two reasons why the club shouldn’t even be thinking about a move for Diop, who could prove to be one of their biggest mistakes of the summer if a deal gets over the line…

Diop won’t take United to the next level

Diop has impressed in his first season at West Ham having played all but five Premier League games for Manuel Pellegrini’s side and averaged 1.9 interceptions and 2.1 tackles per game along the way, the second and fifth highest returns in the squad respectively.

But there has been nothing to suggest he can really take United to the next level. He’s never played in European competitions before, is still yet to be capped by the French national team and despite United’s defensive woes last season, Diop was part of a backline that conceded one goal more in the Premier League.

The Red Devils need someone proven and experienced to bring composure and organisation to the heart of defence, but Diop is a mere 22-year-old. Despite a decent debut season, it’s not clear he’s actually an upgrade on Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly or Victor Lindelof – so why take a punt on him?

Too much money

West Ham clearly know they’re in the driving seat here with The Telegraph reporting that they’re valuing Diop at an incredibly audacious £75m – the same fee Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk 18 months ago.

Few would argue that investment hasn’t worked out after the Dutchman helped clinch the Champions League title for Liverpool, but van Dijk arrived at Anfield with Champions League, international and considerable Premier League experience under his belt and through his combination of impeccable defending, physicality and quality in possession, already looked like a top-end centre-half.

Diop just isn’t in the same category at this moment in time; one season in the Premier League certainly isn’t enough to go on when judging whether he deserves such a lofty fee. And to put into perspective how ridiculous that fee is, West Ham paid less than a third of that to sign him a year ago, while Harry Maguire – an England international with more than 100 Premier League outings under his belt – is about to move to Manchester City for just £65m.

If United are prepared to meet West Ham’s valuation of Diop, clearly something has gone incredibly wrong in their transfer department.

Liverpool fans on Twitter are incredibly excited at the prospect of signing Sepp van den Berg after a video showing his best moments was put on Twitter.

The Telegraph have reported that the Dutch defender will be joining the club imminently.

For a number of supporters, this short video will be the first footage they see of their reported new signing, and they are impressed by what they have seen.

Unsurprisingly reports of the Reds being linked with a Dutch centre-back led to some comparisons with PFA Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk by the Anfield faithful.

It has to be said that the defender looks brilliant in the video that was shared on social media, but it’s hard to say that he will become a star player at Anfield. The 17-year-old made just 15 appearances in the Eredivisie last season and is still clearly an emerging talent.

Despite his lack of experience, Liverpool fans have already been touting him as the next big thing.
