Newcastle want Everton manager Benitez

Many Everton fans have been left lauding some news involving manager Rafa Benitez.

As per Football Insider, Newcastle United have not given up hope of luring their former coach back to St. James’ Park.

He is still the favoured choice among the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium, and a source from the North East club has told the outlet that there is still hope that he can be persuaded to leave Goodison Park.

After a promising start, Benitez seems to have lost the faith of some supporters of the Merseyside club, with back-to-back losses at home to West Ham United and Watford in the Premier League respectively.

Nonetheless, his past connections to Liverpool have added more fuel to the fire, and now it seems a lot of Toffees would like to see him go, a total U-turn from a couple of weeks ago.

Man Utd predicted XI to face Leicester

Manchester United will be looking to return to winning ways when they take on Leicester City in the Premier League this afternoon.

Ole Gunnar Solsjaer’s charges are winless in their last two league outings after Everton held them to a draw just a week after Aston Villa left Old Trafford with all three points.

The Red Devils are set to be boosted by the return of Marcus Rashford when they take on the Foxes, while club captain Harry Maguire could also make his comeback from injury. However, the £63m-rated Raphael Varane is sidelined with a calf problem and South American duo Fred and Edinson Cavani are unavailable due to their international involvements.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects United to line up at the King Power Stadium, with four changes from the side which started against the Toffees last time out…

In goal, David de Gea will start between the sticks after an impressive start to the season for the Spanish shot-stopper, keeping Dean Henderson on the substitutes’ bench.

Ahead of the 30-year-old is set to be a slightly altered back four. While full-backs Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are available for selection, it may come too soon for Maguire to feature from the off, while Varane is out for several weeks.

That means Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are expected to make rare starts for the 20-time English champions in what’s set to be a tricky test for Solskjaer’s charges, the Ivorian coming into the team for his first Premier League involvement of the season.

The engine room will also have an unfamiliar feel to it due to Fred’s enforced absence, but it should give Donny van de Beek a chance to come in alongside Scott McTominay for his first Premier League start of the campaign.

Completing the line-up should be a front four of Jadon Sancho, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and Cristiano Ronaldo, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner being restored to the first XI after surprisingly being omitted against Everton. He comes in for Cavani, with Sancho replacing the out-of-sorts Anthony Martial on the left wing.

Yousuf claims he has resigned from ICL

Mohammad Yousuf has claimed that he has “resigned” from the ICL after he decided last month that his priority was to play for Pakistan

Mohammad Yousuf has claimed that he has “resigned” from the ICL after he decided last month that his priority was to play for Pakistan. The move potentially paves the way for Yousuf’s comeback to the national side, as the PCB recently announced it was willing to talk to players who leave the ICL before the end of May and consider their cases for an international return on an individual basis.”I spoke to Younis [Khan] about a month and a half ago and I resigned from the ICL after that,” Yousuf told Cricinfo. “We both talked about how the country comes first and playing for them is the priority so I decided. I am available whenever the country needs me.”Reports had been swirling around Pakistan since the end of March that Yousuf and a group of other players were considering quitting the ICL after the March-April edition of the league was suspended. ICL players including Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq sought out Younis last month to try and find a way back into the national set-up, after fearing that the ICL – or at least their future participation in it after the deterioration in Indo-Pak ties – might present a tenuous prospect. It is believed that Younis made no recommendations or promises, only telling the players that the priority should be to play for Pakistan, whatever that involves. “Younis was of the view that as they hadn’t come to him before they signed up for the ICL, he doesn’t understand why they came to him when they wanted to leave it,” a source present at the meetings told Cricinfo. “He also pointed out that he cannot guarantee selection as that is a decision in which other parties, and not just the captain, are also involved.” After some consideration and communication with Pir Aftab Shah Jilani, Pakistan’s sports minister, Yousuf resigned from the league, though no official public statement had been made, either by any of the players, or the ICL, until now. There appears, however, to be some confusion over the exact nature of Yousuf’s actions. Though Yousuf said his contract with the league was now “finished” the ICL maintains that he is still on contract, though he has been released to play for Pakistan. “Yousuf’s ICL contract has not been terminated,” Roland Landers, the ICL spokesperson, told Cricinfo. “We have given him a temporary release so that he can play for his country.”Though Yousuf appears to want to do exactly that, it is unclear what the PCB will do now. Yousuf claimed the board was aware of his decision, but officials couldn’t confirm it. “If such a communication has been sent, it would’ve been to the chairman and much of the board has been busy with organising this series [against Australia] based in Dubai. At the moment we cannot say whether Yousuf has sent any such message,” one official told Cricinfo. “Our statement is there now, so we will act according to that.”Yousuf’s case is particularly convoluted, for he has left the ICL before, after he first joined the league in protest at being overlooked for Pakistan’s squad for the 2007 World Twenty20. He was persuaded – with the dangling of an IPL offer – to quit soon after by the PCB, then under Nasim Ashraf’s administration. The ICL took him to court for reneging on his contract and he was unable to play in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 because of legal complications. He played for Pakistan through much of last year before abruptly deciding, in November, to move back to the ICL. The move caught Pakistan’s administration off-guard, as he had been picked for the ODI squad for a series in Abu Dhabi against West Indies. This time, he said, he left because of differences with then-captain Shoaib Malik.”I had a problem with the captain at that time so I left. I had issues with the previous board administration as well,” Yousuf said. “But now I have no problems at all with Younis, or this board. The country comes first.”Though 34, if Yousuf is to come back, he could hardly do so at a more opportune time. Pakistan’s batting has been engaged in a dire struggle against Australia in the UAE. In four matches so far, they have crossed 200 only once and only one batsman, Salman Butt, has scored a fifty. Most visibly, the absence of a 269-ODI veteran averaging over 40 was felt during the third ODI, when Pakistan collapsed from 95-0 to 171 all out, chasing 199. Since the 2007 World Cup and the retirement of Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf has comfortably been Pakistan’s leading batsman, averaging over 60 in 30 ODIs, but he played his last match in July last year.

ScorecardLancashire swept aside the Fly Emirates part-timers in Sharjah to set up a Roses play-off game on Tuesday to decide whichof the rival counties will finish third in the Pro Arch Trophy for 2009. The floodlights at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium had barely warmed up by the time Fly Emirates were dismissed to lose by the landslide margin of 214 runs – the biggest defeat in the three-year history of this event.Pace did the damage as Steven Cheetham, who is 6ft 5in, took 5 for 12 in tandem with 24-year-old Oliver Newby (4 for 29), as both bowled their 10-over allocation straight through. The only Emirates resistance came late as No.9 in the order, Soheb Mujiani (16) and No.10 Rehan Adil (13) limped into double figures. They were the home batsmen to do so.Lancashire now face a third placed play-off game against Yorkshire at Sharjah on Wednesday.Man-of-the-match Cheetham, who won a free return flight to Dubai for his troubles, said: “I didn’t feel that I bowled too crash hot theother night, so it was nice to make amends. I wasn’t too bothered about pace; I was just trying to hit my goodlines and lengths because there wasn’t too much pace in the track.Steven Mullaney’s 121-ball 103, coupled with another good contribution from Paul Horton – freshfrom a century in Abu Dhabi last week – led to Lancashire’s 262 for 5. An injury to Mal Loye, who fell down a pothole and twisted his ankle at this ground last week, allowed head coach Peter Moores to experiment at the top of the order and give Mullaney his chance. After scoring his first century of the tour”I didn’t really envisage opening on the tour, but I mentioned to ‘Moorsey’ [Peter Moores] in a one-on-one meeting with him that I had done it a few times in Australia. When ‘Chappie’ [captain Glen Chapple] read out the team yesterday and said that I was opening, I was absolutely delighted.”I took my chance in a way, and hopefully it will lead to more things.”

-Eles têm a invencibilidade deles; nós, a nossa.

Sunderland begin Embleton contract talks

Sunderland have opened talks with Elliot Embleton regarding an extension to his current contract at the Stadium of Light.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun (via Chronicle Live), who claim that the Black Cats are keen to tie the central midfielder down to a new deal, despite the fact the club have the option to extend the 22-year-old’s current contract, which expires at the end of the season, for a further year.

However, it is believed that, in order to best secure the academy product’s future on Wearside, Lee Johnson would much rather extend Embleton’s current contract for a number of years rather than simply activating the club’s clause.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Embleton has been for Sunderland so far this season, the fact that the club appear to be extremely keen to tie the midfielder down to a new deal is sure to have left fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his seven League One appearances this term, the £4.3k-per-week man has scored two goals, registered three assists and has created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 2.7 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player Max Power dubbed a “nightmare” for defenders average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as Johnson’s second-best performer in the third tier.

As such, it will hardly come as a surprise to Sunderland fans that the club are making moves to award the former England U20 international a new deal, as not only does Embleton appear to have the potential to be able to play a major role for the Black Cats in the years to come, the youngster could also be one of the main men in the club’s bid to finally end their spell in League One this season.

Ibrahima Konate must start against Palace

Liverpool have made a solid start to the new campaign, winning four of their opening five matches in all competitions as Jurgen Klopp’s charges aim to bounce back from a disappointing 2020/21.

The Reds’ troubles last term were largely down to a severe injury crisis at the heart of their defence, with all three of their senior centre-backs suffering season-ending issues by January.

Klopp looked to address that issue over the summer by bringing in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig in a £36m deal, adding to the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

However, the £31.5m-rated 22-year-old is yet to play a single minute for his new employers and has been forced to watch the aforementioned trio all receive game-time in recent weeks.

The time has surely come, though, for Klopp to place his trust in the Frenchman and give Matip a much-needed rest when Crystal Palace visit Anfield over the weekend.

The Cameroon international has played every single minute of Liverpool’s season so far, putting in top-class performances alongside both Van Dijk and Gomez on Premier League and Champions League duty.

However, the 30-year-old has struggled to stay off the treatment table over the last couple of campaigns, limiting him to just 17 starts in the top flight during 2019/20 and 2020/21.

As a result, Klopp must protect one of his most senior centre-backs and rotate his starting lineup when the Eagles attempt to pull off their second giantkilling in a row following their 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Konate already appears to have won over his teammates after Trent Alexander-Arnold lauded him during an interview with Sky Sports.

“He’s a very athletic boy, which is probably something more common now with centre-backs,” said the England right-back. “Being amazing athletes, who are fast and strong, and he ticks all those boxes. He’s still young. But he’s got huge potential.”

The time is right for Klopp to give Konate a chance to impress him and Liverpool supporters alike by gifting him his Reds debut in front of a packed Anfield on Saturday.

Leeds United’s Pascal Struijk has been a bargain

If you were looking through the Leeds United squad right now, and were asked to pick out the best bargain, who would you pick?

Perhaps Raphinha would feature prominently in your thoughts after arriving for just £17m for French side Rennes last summer, and then going on to enjoy an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

And while the Brazilian, or someone like Illan Meslier, would definitely be stand-out contenders for that award, Pascal Struijk may be the best of the lot.

The Dutchman arrived from Ajax on a free transfer back in January 2018 after the Dutch giants decided not to offer him a new contract, initially taking him on trial before handing him a three-year contract to join up at Elland Road.

The fact Struijk was let go spoke volumes of how little Ajax really valued him, and Dutch journalist, Jan Spaans, said: “You never thought Struijk was going to be a first-team player at Ajax. Ajax’s academy is famous and you hear all the time about the best players in it but they didn’t speak about him so much or have any high hopes.”

Since then however, Struijk has developed into a Premier League regular under Bielsa, playing in holding midfield as well as further back in central defence.

The 6 foot 3 star has started all three of Leeds United’s games in the top-flight this season, while he played 27 times in the league the previous campaign – a sure sign of the trust Bielsa has in him.

And, after a particularly impressive display against Manchester United last season, former Leeds man Noel Whelan waxed lyrical about the young starlet.

He said: “I thought he was phenomenal at the back. I can’t tell you how impressed I am with this kid. He went through a stage of playing in Kalvin’s role but that was the wrong choice by Bielsa for me. He is a centre-half all day long. You can see him growing in that position.”

Former Leeds ace Dominic Matteo is also a big fan of him, saying: “He reads the game a lot better than he’s credited for. He’ll get even better too. Struijk is one to look out for.

“There’s plenty of work to be done but, with the size of him, his physicality, his passing, he’s got it all and can step into midfield. He looks very calm on the ball, players who are a bit erratic are not for me but he looks comfortable in possession.”

Now, CIES have him valued at an impressive £17m, and that’s a real testament to the work that he’s done himself in improving every day, and the coaching ability of Bielsa at Elland Road.

The Whites struck absolute gold by landing Struijk on a free, and he’s proving why he could be one of the best steals of the modern era for the Yorkshire club.
