KP rides his luck in fight for form

Kevin Pietersen outscored the entire Pakistan team in his first-innings knock of 80 today, but it’ll take a few layers of dust on the scorebook before that stat manages to outshine its mitigating circumstances

Andrew Miller at Edgbaston07-Aug-2010Kevin Pietersen outscored the entire Pakistan team in his first-innings knock of 80 today, but it’ll take a few layers of dust on the scorebook before that stat manages to outshine its mitigating circumstances. Three clear-cut chances – one of them outrageously simple – and one controversial dead-ball “catch” competed with a host of snicks, gropes and optimistic lunges, as Pietersen fought to overcome his own troubling lack of form, and haul England into another commanding position.”It wasn’t my most fluent of knocks. But in terms of the situation of the game, it was one I’m pretty pleased with,” Pietersen said at the close of play. “I obviously rode my luck, but on that wicket, you’ve got to. It was two-paced, and occasionally the ball would nip – which made it really hard. It was one of those real grafting wickets, but we hope we’re in position now to do something really good on day three.”Humility has never come entirely naturally to Pietersen, but he’s had no choice but to feast on humble pie in recent times – from the loss of the captaincy, through the loss of his fitness, and ultimately the loss of his form – and it was strangely fitting that this particular performance required him to scrape the bottom of the pie-dish itself. It wasn’t especially edifying to watch, and as he paced the dressing-room corridor during a rain-break his tension was plain to see, but in terms of getting his game back to where he wants it, the scraps he chiselled out were doubtless every bit as nutritious.”Yeah, my confidence has taken a big whack,” he said. “Obviously I haven’t been scoring the big hundreds I did in the first fifty-odd Tests. But it’s not as if I haven’t been scoring runs. The dressing room is a fun place, the boys are on good form and you always feel pretty confident among them. I’ve taken a big hit in the last 18 months, but I’ll fight back.”You go from captaining the team to being one of the men again … being told what to do all day every day is something that was hard, in the way that everything happened 18 months ago,” he recalled. “Then I got injured and had a bad tour of South Africa – I was playing really badly there – so it’s not been ideal, the last 18 months. And then the last two wickets have been extremely tough. I haven’t played on two tougher ones in England in my career in Test match cricket.”Thanks to their hapless fielding, Pakistan effectively left themselves needing to take 16 wickets to break even, and therefore it was something of an achievement to restrict England to a less-than-formidable 251. They did so without the services of Umar Gul, who pulled a hamstring, but found in Saeed Ajmal a canny offspinner with a well-disguised doosra who backed up the strike bowlers, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, with the sort of disciplined fare that Danish Kaneria had failed to provide at Trent Bridge. All of which conferred extra kudos on Pietersen’s grafting performance, but aside from one sumptuous leg-side flick to bring up his fifty, his flamboyant strokes of old remained under wraps, on a zippy surface that played into the hands of one of his most troublesome opponents. “Asif has made me look a clown on numerous occasions so far in my career ,” he said. “So to get down the wicket and take out lbw and bowled was probably the best option, and to play straight.”Aside from the struggle to reaffirm his status after a nightmarish year in 2009, Pietersen has also had to contend with a dispute on the home front, with his desire to move on from Hampshire leaving him out on a limb domestically, and without serious cricket coming into this series since the Australia ODIs in June. An opportunity to play a second XI fixture was turned down because of concerns about the quality of the cricket and the media circus that would have accompanied it, and instead his main preparation involved an intensive week of coaching with Graham Gooch at Lord’s.Pietersen conceded, however, that he had dropped his guard on the preparation front – a rare lapse from a man whose dedication to self-improvement has been one of the defining features of his career. A Man of the Series performance in England’s triumphant World Twenty20 campaign left him believing that his game was in better shape than he’d imagined, and it’s taken until now for him to make up the deficit.”The work I did with Goochie was brilliant work, and I didn’t feel in bad nick coming into the series, but I took some of my form from the Caribbean for granted coming into the summer, and I learned a few lessons. It’s the mental side of Test cricket you’ve got to get in tune with. You’ve got to really keep working hard, no matter how well you’re playing, and you’ve got to respect everything. But I’m fighting back now, and hopefully I’m back somewhere.”It was not an apology of an innings – far from it. But it did contain an apology nonetheless, as Pietersen extended his current penchant for mea culpas to the incident, on 41, when he slapped a dead-ball delivery straight to Salman Butt in the covers. “It was instinct, and I probably shouldn’t have hit it, so I apologise if I caused any issues. But the umpire called dead ball before the ball was bowled, so I think, and I haven’t read the rules book, but I think that’s a dead ball.”Salman Butt, Pakistan’s captain, also played down the issue as he fronted up for his team once again – as well he might on a day when his players had no-one to blame but themselves. To compound Butt’s misery, he was dismissed for a duck in the final hour of the day, to take his series tally to a sorry 16 runs.”It’s a one-ball game for us batsmen, and if you get a good one there’s not much we can do,” he said. “If we are lucky it might pass without edging, sometimes it doesn’t carry. But I think all the luck was with KP today.”

Celtic: Postecoglou eyes centre mid

Celtic’s ‘priority’ is to sign another central midfielder, Pete O’Rourke has told Give Me Sport.

The lowdown: Surprising

With just over a week of the January transfer window remaining, Celtic’s outlay stands at £3.82million.

They’ve signed five new players, three of whom – Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Matt O’Riley – can play in central midfield.

It is surprising, then, that Ange Postecoglou wants another central player, but it’s possible that the Australian views Hatate as a more of a left-sided option in the long-term.

It should also be noted that Celtic have offloaded two midfielders this month, with Liam Shaw and Ewan Henderson sealing loan moves.

The latest: Priority

O’Rourke reckons that Postecoglou’s biggest concern at present is strengthening further in the middle of the park.

“I think central midfield is the priority for Celtic right now,” he said.

The verdict: Kendouci?

Who, then, could be the next central midfielder?

Well perhaps Ahmed Kendouci is the most likely candidate. In their live transfer blog on Tuesday, The Daily Record reported that the ES Setif man had submitted a transfer request.

The Algerian top-flight club didn’t dismiss that request outright. Instead, they’ve taken some time to assess their next move.

If they agree to grant his wish, £1.17million-rated Kendouci, the most valuable player in his league according to Transfermarkt, could be the latest player to jet into Glasgow from outside Europe.

Elsewhere, there’s bad news on a Celtic loanee.

West Ham’s Diop wanted by Newcastle

According to reports in France, via Sport Witness, Issa Diop could be on his way out of West Ham in January, with AC Milan, Newcastle and Watford all sniffing around for his signature.

The Lowdown: Diop faltering

Diop has had an up and down career in east London since joining from Toulouse in 2018. He racked up 64 Premier League starts across his first two campaigns as a Hammer, but has fallen out of favour and made the XI just five times in the top flight this season (Whoscored).

That fall from grace has largely been down to the form of Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma under David Moyes, with injuries to the pair the only reason Diop has found himself back in the team in recent weeks.

He hasn’t exactly thrived since returning to the heart of the defence though, ranking as West Ham’s 16th-best performer this season. He averages a mere one aerial duel win per game, less than half that of both Ogbonna and Zouma (Whoscored).

The Latest: Hammers in contact

According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, translated by SW, three clubs have already initiated contact to offer Diop a route away from the Irons.

The report claims Milan have made an enquiry while Newcastle and Watford have also ‘established contacts’, although there are no specifics on whether West Ham have a desire to sell.

Diop is currently valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, with a contract running until 2023 – the club also have an option to extend that by a further year.

The Verdict: Would be foolish from GSB

While there is no question Diop’s development has not gone as expected after his early promise in claret and blue, selling in January would be foolish, especially to a Premier League rival.

The 6 foot 4 colossus seems to have lost a bit of confidence – to go from Jose Mourinho hailing him as a “monster” who “dominated” Manchester United back in September 2018 to a player struggling to win a single header per game certainly indicates that.

However, he is still only 24, and with the injury crisis suffered at centre-back this season Moyes simply does not have the option of cashing in now. That would leave the Scot with only Craig Dawson as a senior centre-back, and it’s hard to envisage GSB splashing the cash on several winter signings to fill that gap.

With the time left on his contract, the Hammers would be much wiser allowing the Frenchman six more months to prove his worth, and simply sell up in the summer once their first-choice pairing returns if that does not happen.

Chingoka confident of Test return in 18 months

Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Peter Chingoka believes their chances of returning to Test cricket in 18 months are “very realistic”. His confidence stems from the appointment of a new coaching team – Alan Butcher was announced as Zimbabwe’s new coach over the weekend, and will be supported by assistant Stephen Mangongo along with former international players Heath Streak and Grant Flower. The country lost several leading players in an exodus following Heath Streak’s removal from the captaincy in 2004 and the situation became worse in 2006 when the Zimbabwe board suspended the weakened national team from Tests.”We endorsed them [the new coaching setup] unanimously,” Chingoka told . “They have the full support of the board. If you talk to experts like Dave Houghton and Alan Butcher they will tell you it’s very realistic, and I fully agree with them.”We just need to play a lot of games against ‘A’ sides from the leading Test nations. When we get back to Tests, we would want to start with lower sides like Bangladesh and then work ourselves upwards. The management is working on a program to take us to where we want.”Chingoka said cricket in Zimbabwe was making progress following a period of deterioration that mirrored the economic and political problems in the country. “It’s healthy and long may it continue,” Chingoka said. “The game is bigger than all of us. Everyone is just concentrating on cricket.”Zimbabwe announced in 2006 that they were temporarily withdrawing from Tests, having last played India at home in September 2005. Only a few players from the exodus, including Steak and left-arm spinner Ray Price, made comebacks. The country continues to play ODIs and Twenty20s but languishes at the bottom of the world rankings. However, the domestic structure has been overhauled and restructured competitions like the Logan Cup have convinced former internationals like Sean Ervine to return home from England. The country’s first Twenty20 competition – the Stanbic Bank 20 Series – was also played recently and featured former Australia allrounder Ian Harvey and England’s Chris Silverwood as player-coaches.Zimbabwe are scheduled to play one Twenty20 international and five ODIs on their tour of West Indies starting on Sunday.

'É campeão!' Kazim encerra jejum, Timão vence e torcida solta o grito

Magpies can axe Ritchie with Digne signing

Newcastle United are less than two weeks away from entering their first transfer window under the ownership of PIF and fans may be excited about what could be to come under the Saudi-Arabian consortium.

We have seen plenty of transfer speculation in recent weeks building up to January, with the Magpies reportedly looking at players to come in and bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the season.

However, the players currently at the club must also be taken into account as any new signing will need to take up a previously occupied spot in the XI and squad.

Finally axe Ritchie

One player who could finally be axed from the team is left-back Matt Ritchie. Newcastle are, according to the Daily Mail, interested in a deal to sign Lucas Digne from Everton and the Frenchman’s arrival would allow Eddie Howe to jettison the Scot by either leaving him on the bench or selling him.

Ritchie has been in poor form this season and signing a new player in his position could solve a problem area for the Magpies. He has averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.43 in 16 Premier League outings this season, which shows that he has struggled to maintain a high standard throughout the campaign.

In the 2020/21 term, he averaged a higher – albeit uninspiring – score of 6.64. This suggests that he has not been performing well over the past 18 months and fans would surely love to see Howe finally axe him from the team by bringing Digne in.

The Blues defender averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.08 in the top-flight last season, after averaging scores of 7.38 and 7.16 in the two previous years. This shows that he can consistently churn out excellent displays at this level, making him a sizeable upgrade on Ritchie.

Chelsea and England midfielder Ross Barkley Tweeted earlier this year: “Lucas Digne, wand of a left foot,” seemingly in awe of the defender’s talents.

The £110k-per-week gem’s statistics back up this claim from the former Toffees man, with 18 assists in his first three Premier League campaigns for Everton. He has also set up three goals in his last six starts for France, highlighting the creative threat he can provide from left-back.

Therefore, Howe must now ensure that he can complete a deal for Digne so that he can axe Ritchie from the XI whilst upgrading in his position with a top-class performer who is proven in this division.

West Ham join Alvarez race

As per South American news outlet El Intransigente.com, it appears West Ham United and head of recruitment Rob Newman have their eyes on another striker as some Julian Alvarez news emerges.

The Lowdown: West Ham eyeing new forward…

It is perhaps the worst kept secret in football that West Ham wish to add a new striker to their ranks amid fitness concerns surrounding Michail Antonio.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Manager David Moyes has been attempting to bring in a back-up for his Jamaica international since the start of 2021, confirming himself that bids had been lodged in January.

Over the most recent summer window, the Scotsman candidly admitted he was ‘desperate’ to bring in a centre-forward but to no avail as his hunt continues.

The arrival of new transfer chief Newman could help in this regard as they become linked to more and more strikers.

Alexandre Lacazette, Adam Hlozek and Andrea Belotti are just some of the names to be mentioned alongside the Hammers and now some news has surfaced on yet another target.

The Latest: West Ham in Alvarez hunt…

According to El Intransigente’s sources, West Ham are one of the several clubs across Europe in the race to sign promising Argentine forward Alvarez.

The Liga Profesional sensation has been attracting suitors from across the continent due to his fine form, with Moyes’ side joined by Real Madrid, Atletico, Juventus, Inter Milan, Fiorentina, Bayern Munich and, now, Borussia Dortmund.

The Verdict: Good candidate?

At 21-years-old with plenty of seasons ahead and real sell-on value, Alvarez may have just become one of the best candidates to reinforce West Ham’s forward line.

The five-cap international’s record in front of goal speaks for itself, having netted 19 strikes across 2021 alone as he draws some crazy comparisons.

Former Uruguay star and club football journeyman Sebastien Abreu bizarrely likened him to a ‘Lion’ in the jungle due to his ruthlessness whilst also comparing Alvarez to the likes of Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez for his hardworking style (archysport.com).

Lauded as ‘amazing’ whilst he develops ‘enormously’ by Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni (remonews.com), the young striker is also pretty affordable from West Ham’s perspective.

He reportedly has a release clause of around €20 million (£16.7m) which could rise to €25 million (£20.9m) depending on a special clause (El Intransigente), arguably a decent price to pay when taking into account his age and prolific form.

Alvarez has also averaged more shots per 90 domestically (3.3) than any West Ham player bar star man Antonio (WhoScored), perhaps indicating he would be a fine understudy.

Is Gerrard leaving Rangers?

An update has emerged on Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, regarding interest from a Premier League club…

What’s the talk?

According to The Telegraph, Aston Villa are keen to take the Gers head coach south of the border to replace Dean Smith at Villa Park.

The report claims the Midlands club are also looking at Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, with Villa attempting to land a replacement for Smith before the end of the international break.

Gutted

This is a worrying update and will surely leave Rangers fans feeling gutted as it means more speculation over Gerrard’s head.

He was linked with the Newcastle job last month and Gers supporters had to deal with the uncertainty over his future then, although Eddie Howe has now been officially appointed as Steve Bruce’s successor at St. James’ Park.

Having come out the other side of the Magpies speculation unscathed, Rangers and their fans now have to listen to talk of Gerrard taking the job at Villa. It remains to be seen whether or not the ex-Liverpool man would be interested in ditching Glasgow to go and manage in the Premier League with the Claret and Blues, but the uncertainty could be frustrating for fans – particularly with an international break coming up this week and no domestic fixtures to focus on.

There is little doubting that Gerrard has enjoyed great success with Rangers. He ended Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football by winning the Scottish Premiership last season, going unbeaten in the 38 league matches and picking up 102 points in the process. He was able to set up a resolute side capable of avoiding defeat for an entire campaign, proving his managerial talent.

Overall, he has won 2.33 points per game across 107 Premiership matches in charge of Rangers since arriving from the Liverpool youth set-up. This shows that he has been able to reinstall a winning mindset at Ibrox with the club currently sat top of the table again after 13 games this season.

Therefore, fans will be gutted by new uncertainty over Gerrard’s future with these links to Aston Villa. It could be a difficult couple of weeks for Rangers supporters to get through before they are able to watch their side play in the flesh again.

Clarke in no hurry to take over captaincy

Michael Clarke believes talk of splitting the Australian captaincy is premature and Ricky Ponting remains the best man to take the team forward from their Ashes defeat. Ponting landed in Sydney after his second consecutive series loss in England and indicated he would be open to the idea of playing in the side without leading it, although he has no plans to step down.Clarke, who is in charge as Ponting rests for the next two weeks, would not consider the idea as a realistic option. “No,” he said firmly when asked whether the captaincy should be split. As the Test vice-captain, Clarke would be next in line, but he is not in a hurry for promotion.”At this stage, we only have one leader and, in my opinion, ‘Punter’ is my captain,” Clarke said. “I’ve only had one captain in my career. Ricky is my leader.”Ponting is back in Australia on a two-week break and has come under fire for his role in the 2-1 result. “It’s very unfair for one guy to be criticised,” Clarke said. “Yes, he’s our captain, he’s our leader, but one of Punter’s greatest strengths is he never complains about that. The reality is the whole team lost the series. Every player in the squad takes some sort of responsibility. It’s not one guy’s fault.”The pain of Sunday’s defeat lingers for Clarke and his Test team-mates, but they have their first chance to start again with Friday’s one-day game against Scotland in Edinburgh. An influx of reinforcements has arrived to warm-up for the two Twenty20s and the seven one-day games against England.”The feeling is looking forward to moving on,” Clarke said. “No doubt the Ashes loss will stay in the guys’ minds for a long time, the ones involved.”Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, joined the team on Wednesday and will monitor the progress of the newer recruits as he starts to look ahead to the 2011 World Cup. Australia will field a new wicketkeeper in Tim Paine over the next month, with Brad Haddin undergoing surgery on his injured left ring finger. Dirk Nannes, David Warner and Adam Voges, who are picked in the Twenty20 outfit, will also be hoping to impress.Another player wanting to catch Hilditch’s eye is Brett Lee, who will appear in his first international match since the World Twenty20 after suffering an untimely side injury in July. Lee was not required for the final two games of the Ashes series as he regained fitness and will be desperate to show he is still a force. It won’t be much fun for the hosts if he gets it right.”Brett will be keen as mustard,” Clarke said. “He’s disappointed not to have taken part in the Test series, but has contributed a lot throughout the series. He’s itching to go.”Gavin Hamilton, the Scotland captain, has played Australia before but won’t be briefing his batsmen on what to do with Lee. “We’ve watched these guys on telly, we know exactly what they can do,” he said. “We’re not going to build them up. The last thing our batsmen need is to sit around and watch Brett Lee bowl at x miles an hour.”They say there is no plan to remind the Australians of their horror week in south London, although Hamilton won’t stop his younger players if they get a bit chirpy. One good thing for Scotland is the tourists’ ranking has dropped to three on the one-day table, bringing them closer towards the unranked hosts.”It’s one way of looking at it, but is there ever a good time to come across them?” Hamilton said. “It’s been a tough week for those guys, but looking from the outside, I have no doubts they will come back hard.”
