Ugandan sides poised to dominate finals

A round-up of matches from the ninth weekend in Kenya’s East African Cup and East Africa Elite League

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Oct-2011East Africa Premier LeagueUganda’s Rwenzori Warriors sealed their place in the competition final with a routine four-wicket win over Nairobi Buffaloes. Collins Obuya’s 47 was the foundation of the Buffaloes 101 for 7, but the in-form Roger Mukasa’s 38-ball 48 laid the way for the Warriors to ease home with 21 deliveries in hand. There are three teams left in the hunt to meet the Warriors in the final. Second-place Nile Knights are in the box seat but need to beat their fellow Ugandans to set up a rematch a week later. Should they fail to do so then the winner of the clash between Rift Valley Rhinos and Kongonis will sneak through.Nile Knights could have gone through had they beaten Kongonis, but in Nairobi the home side recorded an impressive six-wicket win to rekindle their own hopes. The Knights appeared well placed when they posted 126 for 6, but veteran Kennedy Otieno led the chase with an unbeaten 63 to steer Kongonis home with 11 balls to spare. Knights coach Martin Suji was less than impressed with the standard of the umpires. “We cannot control umpiring because it is out of our jurisdiction but we can control what is on ground,” he said. “We just have to beat our country-mates Rwenzori Warriors and qualify.”Rift Valley Rhinos had a tough day against winless Coast Pekee before registering a 36-run victory. David Obuya’s 41 was the only contribution of note as the Rhinos limped to 95, but even that was beyond Pekee’s modest line-up as they folded for 56, another veteran, Peter Ongondo, the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-1-9-3.East African CupKongonis booked their place in the 50-over final with tight two-wicket win in a rain-affected match against Nile Knights. Benjamin Musoke’s 97 was the bedrock of the Knights 229, and chasing a revised D/L target of 170 from 39, it was again Otieno who led the way with a patient 64. The Knights can still make the final but they need a big win over the Warriors in the last round of group matches to do so.Rwenzori Warriors moved second with a 30-run win over Nairobi Buffaloes in a low-scoring contest. Gagandeep Singh’s 6 for 26 helped bowl out the Warriors for 108, but left-arm seamer Charles Waiswa went two better, taking a career-best 8 for 16 as the Buffaloes were skittled for 78.In the basement battle, Coast Pekee managed only 63 – Mitesh Sanghani made the most of some poor batting to take 5 for 10 – and Rift Valley Rhinos knocked off the runs in 15.3 overs for the loss of two wickets.

Yardy, Brown prompt Sussex recovery

A magnificent opening spell by Ryan Sidebottom got relegation-threatened Yorkshire off to a great start against Sussex before the visitors hit back on day one of their Championship match at Scarborough

Scorecard
A magnificent opening spell by Ryan Sidebottom got relegation-threatened Yorkshire off to a great start against Sussex before the visitors hit back on day one of their Championship match at Scarborough.Left-arm swing bowler Sidebottom picked up three wickets for seven runs in his first spell as Sussex slumped to 27 for 3, but skipper Michael Yardy and Ben Brown staged a recovery by both hitting centuries in a record 198 stand for the fifth wicket. Brown was eventually dismissed for 108 but Yardy had advanced to 126 by the close, when Sussex were healthily placed on 335 for 5.Yorkshire were captained by South African Jacques Rudolph in the absence of Andrew Gale, who is out for the remainder of the season with a broken forearm, and also missing from their line-up was Ajmal Shahzad due to an ankle injury. Sussex won the toss and took first use of a good batting pitch but there was sufficient early movement for Sidebottom to create plenty of problems steaming in from the pavilion end.He struck twice in as many balls when the score was on 15, Chris Nash falling lbw and Luke Wells being neatly taken by Anthony McGrath at second slip. Murray Goodwin denied Sidebottom the hat-trick with a defensive push but soon afterwards he was unable to avoid contact with one which moved away from him and McGrath held on to another well-judged catch.Moin Ashraf shared the new ball with Sidebottom and he sent down some useful deliveries as well as some looser ones before being replaced by Steven Patterson who had Yardy, on 7, edging close to Joe Sayers at fourth slip. Ed Joyce had looked confident from the start and he and Yardy middled the ball well to improve Sussex’s situation but just before lunch the opener was caught behind by Jonny Bairstow off Richard Pyrah for 45 out of 90 for 4.Wicketkeeper-batsman Brown joined Yardy and the pair stamped their authority on the game by dominating proceedings in the afternoon session as the pitch flattened out. The introduction of legspinner Adil Rashid in no way hindered Sussex’s progress and, after Yardy had completed his half-century off 146 balls with four boundaries, Brown reached the landmark off only 71 deliveries with seven fours.Yorkshire looked to McGrath in an attempt to force a breakthrough but a leg-side wide went to the boundary, the five runs credited making it a century stand in 33 overs. Yardy sailed past his previous best score this season of 63, compiled in his last innings against Worcestershire at Horsham, and at tea he stood on 79 with Brown on 52.It was Brown, however, who seized the initiative after the interval and he was the first to three figures, slicing Rashid for his 17th boundary off the 124th ball he had received. Brown’s century was the fourth first-class hundred of his career and Yardy moved to his 16th century by nudging a single in Sidebottom’s first over with the new ball which came at 265 for four in 80 overs.Yardy had used up 242 balls and struck eight fours but in the same over he lost Brown, who drove loosely and was caught behind by Bairstow to end a 198 stand in 55 overs – a record for Sussex’s fifth wicket against Yorkshire and the best by any side for that wicket at North Marine Road.Yorkshire were unable to capitalise on Brown’s departure because Kirk Wernars (16 not out) held firm for the day’s final 15 overs, off which a further 47 runs were added.

Goodwin hit with one-match ban

Sussex batsman Murray Goodwin has been handed a one-match ban by an England and Wales Cricket Board disciplinary hearing despite already being reprimanded through his county’s internal disciplinary process

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jul-2011Sussex batsman Murray Goodwin has been handed a one-match ban by an England and Wales Cricket Board disciplinary hearing despite already being reprimanded through his county’s internal disciplinary process. Goodwin’s charge was in relation to his conduct in three matches between April and July, where he was alleged to have shown dissent at umpiring decisions.Goodwin, 38, pleaded guilty to a breach of the ECB’s codes on conduct and behaviour and will now miss Sussex’s Friends Life t20 clash against Kent at Canterbury. In addition, he was ordered to pay £500 towards the costs of the hearing. He had initially been warned for his behaviour during the game against Essex at Hove last month and then reprimanded for hitting the ball to the boundary in frustration after being given out lbw in the Championship clash with Warwickshire at Arundel last week. Sussex warned Goodwin about his future conduct and also issued a fine, although this was suspended for two years as recognition of his service to the county and, until this season, his unblemished personal record.”I regret my actions on both occasions and accept that there can be no circumstances where such a reaction is acceptable,” Goodwin said, after being reproached by his club. “I have apologised to the umpires concerned, and the club, and accept the ruling handed down by the club. As players, we recognise our responsibility as role models for players at all levels and of all ages.”The matter was subsequently taken up by an ECB Cricket Discipline Commission Panel comprising Mike Smith, David Smith and Alan Moss, resulting in Goodwin’s ban. Sussex have made clear their unhappiness with this development, but admitted that it sent a strong message about the need to take on-field behaviour seriously.”As a club, we are disappointed by the outcome as we felt – in our own internal disciplinary process – that Murray’s previously good personal record, his apology to all umpires concerned, and his clear feeling of contrition merited a measure of leniency,” Sussex chief executive Dave Brooks said.”However, this ruling sends out a clear message to all the Counties and professional cricketers that such behaviour will be dealt with severely, and in a manner over and above the fixed penalty system. The consistent implementation of this policy should have the desired effect of arresting a slide in on field discipline, which Sussex CCC supports.”Sussex are still in the running for a place in the quarter-finals of the Friends Life t20 competition, and Goodwin’s enforced absence comes at a time when Rana Naved, Luke Wright, Wayne Parnell, Luke Wells and Kirk Wernars are also missing through injury.

Gibson blasts senior batsmen

“Our senior players have not performed and I am not especially happy with them,” Ottis Gibson said

Firdose Moonda at Shere Bangla stadium23-Mar-2011When Chris Gayle holed out to Shahid Afridi at mid-off in the third over, it summed up the performance of the senior players in the West Indies squad at this World Cup: listless, disinterested and uninspiring.”Our senior players have not performed and I am not especially happy with them,” West Indies coach Ottis Gibson said at the post-match press conference. “Our main batsmen haven’t performed consistently. We need some senior guys who have the hunger and the desire. We need to look at someone like Sachin Tendulkar who is the senior statesman of the Indian team, and goes out and gets runs almost every time.”It seemed that Gibson’s statements were directed at Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan, both of whom have disappointed in the tournament. Gayle missed two matches through injury and scored 170 runs in the five innings he played, with 90 of those runs coming from four knocks. The other 80 runs came in one innings against Netherlands, which is where he looked most like the Gayle of old – the one that can take a bowling attack and make it dance to his tune. Sarwan fared worse, totalling 155 runs in seven innings and not crossing the half-century mark once. He looked uncomfortable at the crease and failed to conjure up the shots he once used to.It’s premature to imagine that these two, and some of the other older players like Shivnarine Chanderpaul, will disappear after this tournament, but Gibson was harsh on them and indicated that there could be an overhaul in the near future. He did not go as far as saying they would be wholesale axing, saying that it is “hard to say whether they [the senior players] had played their last game.”He did indicate that he felt growth was urgent and necessary if West Indies are serious about rebuilding, especially because “West Indies cricket for the last 10 years has been pretty much the same and we’ve had the same players.”With their next assignment, a series against Pakistan at home, only a month away, Gibson said that the analysis and change will have to come quickly. “There is not much time until the Pakistan series and there are serious decisions to be made, decisions about players, in that time.” Gibson seems hopeful that some of the younger members of the squad will be able to make those decisions easier for him by building on the intent they have shown here. “This tournament has seen the emergence of some young players and those are the players that we will build our future on.”Ramnaresh Sarwan had a poor World Cup, making 155 runs at 25.83 with no half-centuries•Associated Press

Darren Bravo, who also only had one innings of note, 73 against South Africa, may fit into that mould, as will allrounder Andre Russell and legspinner Devendra Bishoo, who impressed for Guyana before making his debut at the World Cup. Gisbon hopes that a combination of promising new players will be able to complement the more experienced set. “It’s not going to happen just with youngsters. We have to balance between the young guys being able to rely on the senior guys and the senior guys mentoring the young guys.”The winds of change could find themselves blowing through West Indies but one direction they are unlikely to go in is in the way of the captain. Darren Sammy has had calls for his head since he took over and they intensified at this World Cup, because his inclusion in the starting XI meant no place for Russell. Sammy has been a charismatic leader off the field but a relatively inept one on it.Gibson, nonetheless, gave the captain his backing, especially because of the circumstances under which Sammy took over. He was named captain last October, after Gayle was stripped of the captaincy. “The captain didn’t make runs that he was expected to make but I don’t expect to see a change of leadership at all. The decision [to appoint Sammy as captain] was based on decisions other people made. He [Sammy] didn’t set out to be captain, he has been made captain and he is doing his best to lead the team.”

Newcastle: Dean Jones makes exciting claim

A major Newcastle United transfer claim has emerged ahead of the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has claimed that Bruno Guimaraes is not the best player that the club will be able to attract in the market, despite his sensational start to life at St James’ Park this season.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Watching Guimaraes and seeing the scenes when he scored that last-minute winner, they’ve embraced him.

“You’ve seen the banners and heard the songs about him. They love Guimaraes. And the best thing about it is there’s better to come. They will sign better players than him.”

Supporters will be excited

This update will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling excited, as the prospect of better players than Bruno coming in is a tantalising one.

The Brazilian has been outstanding since arriving at the Tyneside club from Lyon in January and has quickly proven his quality at Premier League level. He has averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.25 across 13 appearances in the top flight, scoring four goals and providing one assist from central midfield.

Guimaraes has also made 2.7 tackles and interceptions and won 5.7 duels per game. This shows that he is getting stuck in defensively to help his team at one end of the pitch, in addition to showcasing his quality on the ball at the other end with his goal contributions.

In the Newcastle squad, no player with five or more appearances in the top flight has averaged a higher rating than the Brazil international. Dan Burn’s score of 7.01 is the closest score to the midfielder’s, which shows that he has been a step above his team-mates since he joined in the winter.

Kieran Trippier averaged a score of 7.68 in his four outings before he picked up an injury but, from that sample size, it is difficult to draw conclusive assessments as to whether or not he is better than Guimaraes.

Now, imagine Newcastle signing multiple players who are better than the former Ligue 1 gem! If he is capable of performing to such a high standard on a regular basis in the Premier League, just how good are the players that PIF are now looking to target?

Fans will surely be excited by the club’s plans, as per Jones’ claim, and will be looking forward to the summer transfer window as they await the next star to come through the door at St James’ Park.

Maddinson shines as Test hopefuls struggle

New South Wales’ trio of Test hopefuls – Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith – struggled to make an impression on the first day of the Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at the WACA

New South Wales’ trio of Test hopefuls – Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith – struggled to make an impression on the first day of the Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at the WACA and it was left to 18-year-old Nic Maddinson to hold the innings together as the visitors were bowled out for 291. Maddinson, who struck a century on first-class debut against South Australia last month, made 72 of those to counter a strong performance from the Warriors’ seamers, and the home side’s opening batsmen then negotiated a four-over burst to go to 0 for 3 at stumps.Hughes looked in superb touch as he and Phil Jaques went past an untroubled half-century opening stand, and was particularly punishing through the covers as he rattled along at close to a run a ball. He collected three boundaries in one Ryan Duffield over and looked set to advance his claims for a Test spot before both he and Jaques fell in quick succession to seamer Drew Porter as New South Wales slipped from 0 for 83 to 2 for 90.Porter, whose last first-class appearance was in 2008-09, was only included in WA’s side for this match after Michael Hogan withdrew with a back problem. He struck in consecutive overs, trapping Jaques lbw and tempting Hughes into an edged drive to second slip. Not long afterwards Smith, batting at No. 4, chipped to mid-on where Michael Beer held a juggled catch and New South Wales were 3 for 104.When Khawaja and Moises Henriques were dispatched in the afternoon session, the visitors were 5 for 164 and wobbling. Maddinson and wicketkeeper Peter Nevill eased them past 200 with a 62-run partnership for the sixth wicket, Maddinson striking 12 fours in his half-century before he was removed by Beer. A typically bellicose 19-ball 33 from captain Stuart Clark took New South Wales close to 300, but his new-ball bowlers were unable to break through in a short burst before the close as Liam Davis and Wes Robinson dug in with extra-cautious tenacity.

Rangers dealt Aaron Ramsey blow

Rangers have been hit with a late Ibrox injury setback ahead of their return to European action in Glasgow later today…

What’s the latest?

In his pre-match press conference, Gio van Bronckhorst revealed that the Wales international will be unavailable for selection against Borussia Dortmund on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League.

Ramsey was missing from the squad against Dundee United at the weekend and it was stated that he would be back in training this week. However, it has now been confirmed that he has not returned in time for this huge Europa League second leg clash.

The club Tweeted this update from the head coach: “Ramsey won’t be in the squad for tomorrow, no other fresh injury news.”

Livid

This update will surely leave Rangers fans feeling livid as Ramsey’s career at Ibrox has got off to almost the worst possible start.

He has been at the club for the best part of a month and a cup clash with a League Two outfit is the only match that he has been able to start so far.

The Juventus loanee has been used as a substitute once in the Europa League and two times in the Premiership, failing to register a goal or assist in either competition – with limited game time.

This will be particularly frustrating for the supporters as he arrived with plenty of hype due to his pedigree and experience. He has played over 400 matches for Juventus and Arsenal – two big European clubs – throughout his career and managed over 150 direct goal involvements for club and country.

Therefore, him being out is a major blow for the Gers because of what he could bring to the side, particularly against Bundesliga opposition in Dortmund. His career statistics show that he knows how to perform at the top level and his know-how could have been crucial tonight had he been available for selection, from the start or off the bench.

Fans will be annoyed that van Bronckhorst will not be able to call upon his expertise and they may even be starting to wonder whether there was any point in signing him in January with his limited availability already creating issues.

However, there are plenty of games left in the season and he still has time on his side to get himself back to full fitness in order to then make a big impact on the side in the clutch stage of the campaign.

Leeds expecting major Kalvin Phillips offers

Leeds United are expecting to receive major offers for star man Kalvin Phillips this summer, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Return to training

The 26-year-old has missed the last six Premier League games with a hamstring injury but has now returned to training alongside Liam Cooper.

Leeds shared images of the pair all smiles at Thorp Arch in the week, with Phillips the subject of late interest in the January transfer window.

West Ham had a £50m bid turned down by Elland Road officials for Phillips late in the winter window, but Leeds are already bracing themselves for even bigger offers.

The Latest: Source shares update

Football Insider shared a story on Saturday where pundit Alan Hutton was giving his thoughts on Phillips’ future.

The outlet added that they were informed by a Leeds source the club are expecting major bids for the midfielder in the summer which are likely to exceed West Ham’s rejected bid.

The Verdict: A worry

Phillips revealed before the January market opened that he wants a new deal at Elland Road, however, as we know, that is yet to materialise.

His current contract is thought to be worth around £25,000-a-week and he hasn’t been handed improved terms since the club’s promotion to the Premier League. That could be a worry for the Whites, especially with interest now mounting in England’s Player of the Year.

Leeds fans will be hoping that Phillips remains in Yorkshire, however, the longer it goes on without a new deal, along with the recent update regarding big summer bids, means there may well be growing concern at Elland Road going into the 2022/23 campaign.

Spurs: Partici plotting Ginter swoop

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Matthias Ginter to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports News (via the Daily Mail), who claim that Fabio Paratici is set to battle it out with Juventus, West Ham United and Aston Villa for the signing of the Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back – who is set to become a free agent upon the expiry of his contract at Borussia-Park at the end of the season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Conte can axe Sanchez with Ginter

While Antonio Conte and Paratici have reportedly made a left-sided centre-half their priority target this summer, considering just how impressive the right-sided Ginter has been for Gladbach this season, in addition to the fact that Davinson Sanchez does not look to have much of a future in north London under the 52-year-old manager, it is easy to see why Spurs would be interested in a move for the 28-year-old.

Indeed, over his 25 Bundesliga appearances in the current campaign, the £21.6m-rated defender has been imperious in the heart of Adi Hutter’s backline, helping his side keep four clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.4 tackles, three clearances and winning 5.6 duels – at a success rate of 67% – per game.

The Germany international has also impressed in an attacking capacity, scoring one goal and creating four big chances for his teammates, in addition to making 56.2 passes, 3.2 long balls and taking 1.2 shots per fixture.

These returns have seen the £50k-per-week player who Joachim Low dubbed “underrated” average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.98, ranking him as Gladbach’s best defender and fourth-best player overall in the German top flight this season.

The 46-time capped World Cup winner has also earned praise from legendary German centre-back Lothar Matthaus, who went as far as to compare the Ginter to Paris Saint-German defender and former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

Matthaus said: “Ginter has become a leader at the back, similar to Ramos at Real. He doesn’t just give instructions to his teammates, but leads them as well. That’s what Ginter is doing really well at the moment. He reminds me of Ramos.”

As such, considering the fact that the £42m Sanchez has not featured in seven of Tottenham’s last eight Premier League fixtures, as well as the £67k-per-week centre-back who Paul Robinson dubbed “inexcusable” having been linked with a move away from north London in the January transfer window, it would indeed appear as if the Colombia international could be on his way out of the club this summer.

And, if Sanchez does depart, signing Ginter on a free to replace the 25-year-old would undoubtedly be a fantastic piece of business for Paratici to get over the line – as the German would be a huge upgrade upon the former Ajax starlet.
