Man City player ratings vs Fulham: Julian Alvarez superb as Pep Guardiola's side go top of the Premier League

The Argentina striker scored a stunner and won a penalty at Craven Cottage as City held on for a battling 2-1 win in west London

On another record-equalling day for Erling Haaland, it was his understudy who stole all the headlines for Manchester City as Julian Alvarez scored the goal that sent the defending champions back to the top of the Premier League.

Alvarez was only in the City team after Kevin De Bruyne was ruled out through injury, but wasted little in time in making an impact, as he won a penalty inside 90 seconds after a foul by Tim Ream.

Haaland converted from the spot for his 34th Premier League goal of the season – the joint-most in a single campaign – but Carlos Vinicius pulled Fulham level after 15 minutes with a fine finish.

Alvarez, though, produced a moment of individual brilliance to fire a 25-yard strike past the otherwise impressive Bernd Leno for what proved to be the winner midway through the first half.

Pace got him out of trouble defensively. Some impressive cross-field passes to release Grealish.

    John Stones (7/10):

Able to step into midfield from centre-back. Always assured in possession.

    Ruben Dias (5/10):

Had some shaky moments both in and out of possession, most notably when bumping into Ederson in the second half.

    Manuel Akanji (6/10):

Caught out by Wilson's movement for Fulham's goal but otherwise solid.

    Julian Alvarez (8/10):

Won the early penalty before scoring the winner with a sublime long-range strike.

    Jack Grealish (6/10):

Should have scored twice in the first half but denied by Leno. Tete will be glad to see the back of him.

    Erling Haaland (7/10):

Nerveless penalty and some excellent link-up play, most notably to set up chances for Grealish.

Vela, Barco and the top MLS newcomers in 2018

A number of Major League Soccer teams have brought in exciting talent from abroad prior to the 2018 campaign. Goal runs down 15 of the best newcomers

Kim KlementJosue Colman, midfielder – Orlando CityThe 19-year-old was signed from Paraguayan power Cerro Porteno in the offseason for a reported $3 million, and is expected to immediately slot in for the Lions and help fill the void left by Kaka's offseason retirement. The young designated player is highly regarded and Orlando City hopes he can make a similar impact in MLS as another former Cerro Porteno star: Atlanta United's Miguel Almiron. AdvertisementBuda MendesEzequiel Barco, midfielder – Atlanta UnitedNo MLS team has paid as much for a player as Atlanta United did for Barco this offseason, so it's safe to say all that eyes will be on the Argentine teenager in 2018. Barco's $15 million signing was a major coup for the league, as the attacking midfielder had plenty of suitors all over Europe. The former Independiente man can play on the wing or in a No. 10 role, and his addition to an offense already containing the likes of Miguel Almiron and Josef Martinez could make Atlanta nearly impossible to stop. Gabriele Maltinti/Getty ImagesSaphir Taider, midfielder – Montreal ImpactThe Impact needed a replacement for Blerim Dzemaili this offseason, and they didn't have to look very far. With Dzemaili returning to Serie A side Bologna after his loan expired, Montreal again raided sister club Bologna's roster to sign Algerian international midfielder Taider as a designated player. Taider is highly experienced for a 26-year-old, with 162 career Serie A appearances and 42 caps for his country. If Taider can replicate Dzemaili's production, Montreal will be one step closer to a playoff return. ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Bangladesh hold nerve to seal final berth

Bangladesh held their collective nerve against Pakistan, as Mahmudullah’s cameo secured a five-wicket win and a place in the Asia Cup final

The Report by Mohammad Isam02-Mar-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details5:29

Bazid Khan: Sharjeel, Hafeez never deliver when it matters

Those who watch cricket regularly will tell you that in a tight contest, the winning side will always show some signs of their impending triumph. Mahmudullah’s upright blast over extra cover at the start of the 17th over can only be described as the shot of the tournament so far. In a tight chase of 130 against Pakistan, it was only fair that Mahmudullah struck the blow that took Bangladesh to the Asia Cup final.Despite Shakib Al Hasan’s brain freeze to Mohammad Amir in the 18th over, Mashrafe Mortaza struck two heroic fours immediately after to ease Bangladesh’s nerves. Then, in a manic 19th over bowled by Mohammad Sami which included two no balls, Mahmudullah’s squeezed boundary past point all but sealed victory for the hosts. Once Mahmudullah duly knocked off the winning runs with a slog past midwicket, he and Mashrafe wheeled away in wild celebration, nearly ramming into their on-rushing team-mates.Mahmudullah’s unbeaten 15-ball 22 was perhaps the most important innings of his career, particularly because he was at the crease in the last over of the 2012 Asia Cup final, when Bangladesh fell short by two runs against Pakistan. This game went into the last over too, but mostly because Bangladesh lost wickets at crucial stages and were trying their best not to crumble to Amir. The other Pakistan bowlers were all shoddy, and they were not helped by the team’s very poor effort in the field.Still, it was Bangladesh who were pegged back early in their 130-run chase. Tamim Iqbal was the first to go as a rare leg-before victim of Mohammad Irfan, who brought the ball into the batsman and hit the striding front pad half-way up. Luckily, Soumya Sarkar found Sabbir Rahman willing to stick around to weather the initial Amir storm. After the pair had safely negotiated those two overs, they looked for runs off the other bowlers. Soumya managed to hit Amir for an elegant four through midwicket, while Sabbir’s only boundary in his 15-ball 14 also came through a roll of the wrist, through fine-leg.Sabbir fell to Shahid Afridi in the ninth over, missing a charge completely to be bowled. Soumya survived a few close calls with miscued hits dropping short on a number of occasions, but he was generally hitting them well on the leg-side. Mushfiqur Rahim was also lucky to survive a close leg-before appeal to Afridi before Amir and Malik brought Pakistan into the game in the space of eight deliveries in the 13th and 14th overs.Having been brought back for a single over as his second spell, Amir yorked Soumya by clattering into his leg-stump. Soumya had made a run-a-ball 48 that had five fours and the pumped six into the midwicket stands, but when he got out, Bangladesh needed 47 off 40 balls. There was much expected from the experienced duo of Mushfiqur and Shakib at that stage, but Mushfiqur was given out leg-before trying to reverse-sweep Malik in the over after Soumya got out.Taskin Ahmed and Al-Amin Hossain were Bangladesh’s best bowlers, stepping up in the absence of Mustafizur Rahman, who was ruled out through a right side strain. Taskin bowled his first maiden over in his T20I career in a first-spell that saw him give away just one run. His second spell produced the wicket of Umar Akmal; he finished with figures of 4-1-14-1. Al-Amin bowled two tight overs at the top, giving away just nine runs before returning in the last four overs to give away four and 12, as Bangladesh decently closed out the Pakistan innings for 129 for 7.Pakistan’s innings followed the same pattern of their previous games, losing three early wickets. Khurram Manzoor sent to open the batting, played out the first over and then got out for one off the first ball of the second, an Al-Amin delivery that jumped on him outside off-stump. It was the third time in the four Asia Cup matches that Al-Amin had taken a wicket in his first spell. Sharjeel Khan was bowled after missing a slog off Arafat Sunny in the fourth over, after he had faced just eight balls till that point, hitting a four and six.Mohammad Hafeez was unlucky when he was given out leg-before by umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge when even on the first view, it looked as if the Mashrafe Mortaza delivery was climbing. Replays confirmed that it was yet another erroneous decision by an umpire in the Asia Cup. When Taskin removed Akmal in his second spell, Pakistan ended with the lowest score – 34 for 4 – in the first ten overs against Bangladesh.Sarfraz Ahmed and Malik then joined hands for a fifth-wicket partnership. Malik struck Shakib for a six that was as straight as an arrow, and also found three fours on the off-side as well as one that was tickled past long-leg. Sarfraz got both his sixes with swings to midwicket, and tucked into fours through covers, midwicket, and mid-on.Malik was in the groove when he mistimed Sunny to the deep midwicket boundary for 41 off 30 balls. Soon, Sarfraz reached his second T20I fifty with an inside-out blast over cover in the penultimate over. But it was Mahmudullah’s inside-out blast over the covers that would be the most memorable moment of the game, as Bangladesh got themselves to the final of a tournament that they were fearing a bit more than the World T20 itself.

Derbyshire have added to their collection of overseas players for 2015 by bringing in New Zealand opener Hamish Rutherford to cover for the absence of Tillakaratne Dilshan in June and July. Rutherford is in the UK with New Zealand’s Test squad but is not expected to be involved in the limited-overs leg.Martin Guptill’s Test recall has left Derbyshire currently without an overseas player, although the arrival of Hasim Amla on a short-term deal is imminent. He will then be succeeded by Dilshan, who will be replaced by Rutherford during Dilshan’s spell in the Caribbean Premier League. Nathan Rimmington has also signed to play in the NatWest T20 Blast.Rutherford, 26, has previously played county cricket for Essex. He will join up with Derbyshire in the middle of June and will be available across all three formats until the end of July. In total, he will be available for seven NatWest T20 Blast fixtures, three Championship matches and four Royal London Cup games during his stay.”Hamish is a talented top-order batsman who already has experience playing county cricket in English conditions,” Derbyshire performance director, Graeme Welch, said. “He has international pedigree in both the long and shorter formats, which will be key as he joins us at what is a busy part of the summer. He will join us fresh from a Test series versus England so he will be used to the conditions, match fit and raring to go.”Together with Guptill, Rimmington, Amla and Dilshan, we have now been able to reinforce our line-up with experienced overseas players across the entire season, which provides us with real options in all formats of the game.”

Michael Clarke still polling well

With the Brisbane Test against India less than a month away, Australia coach Darren Lehmann has indicated that “there’s a few things going on behind the scenes”, as the team look for a replacement captain to fill in for Michael Clarke, who could miss the

Daniel Brettig18-Nov-2014In Australia’s political capital, questions of leadership are never far from anyone’s mind. Whether it be the dismissal of Gough Whitlam’s government by the governor-general Sir John Kerr in 1975, Paul Keating’s lengthy battle to prise the Prime Ministership from Bob Hawke, or Kevin Rudd’s pact of mutually assured destruction with Julia Gillard, challenges, spills and outrages abound through Canberra’s history. So it is somewhat eerie to ponder Australia’s captaincy predicament this week. Darren Lehmann noted the irony of stewarding a team with a hamstrung captain in Michael Clarke, an ageing deputy in Brad Haddin, and an ODI stand-in leader in George Bailey who has faced speculation about his place in the team when not subbing in for the first choice. Asked about Canberra’s form for leadership tensions, Lehmann laughed.”That’s a good one. I like that. That’s the best question so far,” he said. “It’s fine. There’s no spill. Obviously there’s a few things going on behind the scenes, we just have to wait and see what happens with Michael in the next few days. In terms of the one-day setup, George is captain for this series and we’ve got to play well.”Clarke’s injury and his likely layoff to find a more lasting remedy for related back and hamstring issues has opened up the captaincy ambitions of more than a few men. Bailey, Haddin, Steven Smith and even Shane Watson have had reason to ponder their captaincy credentials in recent days, as the picture grew as murky as the results from scans on Clarke’s hamstring.Watson, Australia’s most recent Test captain other than Clarke, spoke with typical enthusiasm about the thought of leading the team once more, following his somewhat incongruous week as helmsman for the Delhi Test against India in 2013 – mere days after he was suspended from the Mohali Test for failing to hand in a homework assignment on time.”I wouldn’t say no, that’s for sure,” Watson said. “The time I’ve had the privilege of captaining Australia was certainly incredible to have that opportunity. It was an honour to be able to do it. But there’s a few people that are well in front of me to get the captaincy, so my most important thing is to try and be part of that first Test team in Brisbane.”While the team performance manager Pat Howard has made it clear that he will be recommending Haddin to replace Clarke in the likely event of his absence from the first Test in Brisbane, the likes of Bailey and Smith also have some stake in the matter. The former has become a far more regular ODI leader in direction proportion to Clarke’s increasing physical frailty, earning plaudits for his temperament and an ability to segue between lively batsman and locum leader. In Smith’s case, the future favours his eventual succession, and it was no less an authority than the former captain and now Cricket Australia board member Mark Taylor who questioned the 25-year-old on his leadership ambitions in Perth. After a respectful nod to the pending fitness of both Clarke and Haddin, Smith allowed himself to ponder.”If those two aren’t there they’ve got to make a decision and if they decide I’m the person to be in charge to lead that first Test I’d be comfortable doing it and hopefully I’d be able to do a good job as well,” Smith told Taylor. “I’ve had a few experiences in captaining with NSW and the Sixers and think I’ve done quite a good job with those as well. So it is something that I do enjoy doing, and if I do get the opportunity to do that one day it’ll be a dream come true.”Dreams and ambitions are invariably given more life in a vacuum, and Clarke’s uncertain status will allow plenty of thoughts to turn even briefly to leadership. Watson noted that the ODI team had been forced into getting accustomed to operating without Clarke for several years, from the 2012 West Indies tour and the 2013 Champions Trophy to the India trip later the same year that preluded the Ashes.”Unfortunately for Michael it has happened a couple of times within the one-day squad over the last year or so,” Watson said. “Even the Champions Trophy in England, we also had India last October-November when Michael wasn’t over there as well. George is getting some good experience about filling in and he’s doing a great job. George is an incredible guy. He knows the game very well and he’s leading very well. The group’s sort of had to get used to it a little bit.”But Watson also delivered perhaps the most reassuring words Clarke has heard all week, illustrating how in recent times the pair’s often fractious relationship has healed. In this there was evidence that Clarke had learned a thing or two over the course of his captaincy, and that it would be wasteful to have physical infirmity prevent him from making use of those lessons.”If he’s fit it’ll be a great thing,” Watson said. “He’s got an incredible record as a captain and a player as well. Everyone’s preference is for Michael to be captain and fully fir for that first Test. Certainly as a leader it’d leave a hole, but as a player as well. Whoever would get an opportunity would have the skill set to try and make up for that void that Michael would leave. But everyone’s got their fingers crossed everything will be right for Michael.”Clarke, then, is still polling strongly.

Steyn, Morkel bowl SA to big win

Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel bowled South Africa to only their third Test win in Sri Lanka with 16 wickets in Galle, including seven on the final day

The Report by Abhishek Purohit20-Jul-20145:29

‘Sri Lanka batted way below their ability’

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDale Steyn and Morne Morkel bowled South Africa to only their third Test win in Sri Lanka with 16 wickets in Galle, including seven on the final day. South Africa’s lone specialist spinner Imran Tahir went wicketless in the final innings, but that did not prevent them from wrapping up proceedings before tea to start Hashim Amla’s captaincy on a high in the country where they last lost an away Test series, in 2006.Kumar Sangakkara was the biggest obstacle in the visitors’ path, and he was dropped off Morkel, but gave away his wicket to a JP Duminy long hop to complete a perfect morning session for South Africa. Sri Lanka began the day on 110 for 1, 260 runs adrift of the target of 370. Sangakkara had come into the match with a record seven successive fifty-plus scores and had looked in no trouble in the first innings before chopping a pull on to his stumps off a wide delivery. He had purred his way to 58 on the fourth afternoon, and Kaushal Silva had defended and left superbly in an unbroken 96-run partnership. South Africa’s spinners had bowled too many boundary balls. The onus was on the fast bowlers on the fifth morning, and they promptly stepped up. Morkel hit Silva in the opening over and also beat him. Steyn had Sangakkara edging first ball but it did not carry to the cordon. In his second over, he had Silva pushing at one close to off stump and de Kock pulled off a diving one-handed take to his right.Dale Steyn claimed nine wickets in the match•Associated PressFour balls later, Morkel had Sangakkara driving but de Kock put down a simpler chance. Sangakkara was on 65. Amla used his fast bowlers in short spells and Steyn and Morkel gave way to Vernon Philander and Tahir. The legspinner bowled with much better control than at any time in the match. But neither he nor Philander carried the threat Steyn and Morkel did. Tahir offered the inevitable full toss and Jayawardene deposited it over midwicket. Next ball, Sangakkara clipped Philander through midwicket for four more.Amla brought Morkel back immediately after drinks and the fast bowler had Jayawardene feathering the first ball following the break through to the keeper. Jayawardene had looked ultra-cautious during his 31-ball stay and it was a top delivery to nail him, holding the line just outside off.Morkel was given just two overs in that spell, and replaced with Duminy, who began with possibly one of the longest long hops ever. It was a half tracker that sat up way outside off stump, but Sangakkara picked out Amla at midwicket, the pull causing his downfall again. De Kock’s drop had cost South Africa just 11.Amla was on a roll now with the bowling changes. In came Steyn again. Thirimanne had tended to drive with an open face in the first innings too, and Steyn had him edging behind in his second over on return. Amla saw the chance to squeeze in another over from Morkel before lunch. Dinesh Chandimal was hurried on the hook by a bouncer and given caught behind by umpire Billy Bowden.
