Now worth 700% more: Arsenal have struck gold on Emery's "massive talent"

It would be fair to say that the last five years or so have been a roller coaster for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta has taken a team that was teetering on the edge of mid-table mediocrity and transformed them into genuine contenders for the Premier League and Champions League.

However, while he did take over something of a sinking ship from Unai Emery, it would be unfair to lay the blame for everything that went wrong during his short tenure at his feet.

Moreover, there were a couple of things he did right, such as signing a player whose valuation has exploded in the years since.

Emery's best signings at Arsenal

While the majority of Emery’s signings at Arsenal were middling to poor, he did bring in a few quality players during his year and a half in the hot seat.

Undoubtedly, his best addition to the team was William Saliba, who cost the Gunners around £27m and put pen to paper in the summer of 2019.

Granted, the Frenchman didn’t actually play under the Aston Villa coach, and also seemed to be on the way out at one point, but he is now one of the most important players in Arteta’s squad.

The Bondy-born “monster,” as dubbed by content creator Connor Humm, has now made 142 appearances for the club and has just agreed to a new five-year deal that should hopefully keep Real Madrid away for a little while longer.

Another defender signed by Emery who ended up becoming something of a fan favourite at the Emirates was Kieran Tierney.

The Scotsman joined the summer of 2019, and while he’s not on the same level as Saliba and suffered from injury setback after injury setback, he was the epitome of a hardworking professional and something of an old-school defender.

He might not have gone on to become the captain that many thought he might, but he more than made his mark in North London and remains popular among the fans.

Finally, while David Luiz and Bernd Leno were never top-quality players during their time in N5, like Tierney, they could never be accused of not trying, and should probably be held in slightly higher regard than they are.

With all that said, there is another player Emery signed who’s still at the club today and whose valuation has exploded.

The Emery signing whose valuation has exploded

Since it’s not Saliba, it’ll come as no surprise that the Arsenal player in question is none other than Gabriel Martinelli.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Emery was still in charge of the club when he was signed from Brazilian outfit Ituano in the summer of 2019 for a fee said to be around the £6m mark, and according to Transfermarkt, he is now worth up to €55m, which is around £48m.

In other words, the 24-year-old is now worth £42m more than when he joined the North Londoners, which is a staggering increase of around 700% – not a bad investment.

Now, there will undoubtedly be some who dispute such a valuation, or point to his lacklustre form over the last few years as a reason why he should be worth less.

However, it’s important to remember that while he’s no longer as important as he once was to Arteta, he can still do a job for a top team like the Gunners.

For example, so far this season, he has found the back of the net on three occasions, provided one assist in just nine games, and has become more useful in his new role as an impact substitution.

Moreover, while the “massive talent,” as dubbed by Rio Ferdinand, does have his drawbacks and can be frustrating at times, his underlying numbers are reasonably impressive.

Ultimately, Martinelli might never be the superstar attacker so many hoped he would be for Arsenal, but he is a useful squad player and more than justifies his current valuation.

Nuno told "special" West Ham star may be the world's best in his position, it's not Bowen

West Ham boss Nuno Espírito Santo oversaw a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Everton during his debut game in the Hammers dugout, and he’s now being told that there’s another world-class player in his new squad to rival Jarrod Bowen.

West Ham set for change under new boss Nuno Espírito Santo

Chairman David Sullivan followed the advice of fellow boardroom member Karren Brady, who was a big supporter of Nuno, and appointed the Portuguese on a three-year contract immediately after sacking Graham Potter last Saturday.

Potter was a popular figure among senior members of the West Ham squad and had significant backing behind-the-scenes, according to credible reports.

However, a string of poor results, not to mention the club’s second-worst win percentage of the Premier League era behind Avram Grant, forced Sullivan and co to pull the trigger.

Nuno wasted no time stepping into Potter’s shoes, with Tottenham’s former boss overseeing first-team training at Rush Green the very same day that Potter was sacked, as he prepared his team for a looming trip to Merseyside.

The tactician noticeably omitted midfielder James Ward-Prowse from his first ever West Ham matchday squad – a player he didn’t fancy at Nottingham Forest either – and it’s since been reported that the 30-year-old is resigned to leaving in January (GiveMeSport).

Wolves midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

Ward-Prowse has already been told that he has no future at West Ham under Nuno, with the ex-Al-Ittihad coach wasting no time in stamping his authority on the team amid reports that Sullivan is also ready to back him in January.

There are suggestions that West Ham are prepared to bid up to £43m for AC Milan star Christian Pulisic, though it is highly debatable that the USA international would leave a potential Serie A title challenge midway through the campaign.

In any case, the squad is going to look slightly different under West Ham’s new manager.

That being said, alongside the obviously undroppable Bowen, summer signing El Hadji Malick Diouf is already making quite an impression.

West Ham told El Hadji Malick Diouf might be the best left-back in the world

The 20-year-old, who joined West Ham in July for around £19 million from Slavia Prague, is already looking like an absolute bargain.

Malick Diouf’s marauding pace down the left-hand side has already wreaked havoc at times, with the Senegal international bursting past two Everton players before putting in a delightful cross in the build up to Bowen’s equaliser at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday.

The defender undoubtedly sent a message to Nuno with that moment of sheer quality, and members of the media are convinced that he could be something special.

YouTuber and football content creator ‘CaniSports’ told West Ham they might have the best left-back in world football, while Sky presenter Joe Thomlinson has already called Diouf “one of the finds of the season”.

Elsewhere, presenter Jamie Boyce branded the African a “special” player amidst a tongue-in-cheek verdict that Diouf could be one of the best players to ever wear Claret and Blue.

Meanwhile, journalist Muhammad Butt has already called Diouf “massively superior” to Man United’s Patrick Dorgu, hailing West Ham’s often criticised recruitment team in the process.

It is still very early days, and a lot of these verdicts may be deemed excitable to say the least.

However, what is clear is that Diouf has stood far above West Ham’s newest recruits so far, and Nuno will be hoping that is set to continue.

Contact made: Leeds now plotting last-gasp offer to sign "underrated" star

As the hours continue to tick away on transfer deadline day, Leeds United are still searching for that one last addition of attacking spark and have made contact in pursuit of exactly that.

Leeds' deadline day plan

After a 1-0 victory against Everton, 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal and, most recently, solid 0-0 draw against Newcastle United, Leeds should be fairly happy with how they’ve started their Premier League return. But they must not get complacent. There’s still work to be done in the transfer market.

For all their good work to earn four points from a possible nine, it’s noticeable that they’ve managed just one goal whilst doing so and that came courtesy of Lukas Nmecha’s penalty on the opening day.

It’s an attacking problem that Daniel Farke pointed out before the season even got underway and one that, to their credit, the 49ers have been attempting to solve through targets such as Igor Paixao and Facundo Buonanotte. Ultimately, however, any potential deals for those targets have been hijacked by the likes of Marseille and Chelsea.

Even after those frustrating blows, though, Leeds are not giving up. Farke reiterated that they will be working until the window slams shut to welcome much-needed attacking quality, telling reporters: “In defence and midfield, goalkeeper position and full-back position, we’ve done really good business.

“But we spoke quite open and honest about it, we would need to add some more quality up front. We need to stay awake until the last hour of this window.”

The wait may well be worth it for Leeds fans if deadline day reports are anything to go by too, with the Whites preparing to step up their move to sign one particular star.

Leeds plotting last-gasp Spertsyan offer

As reported by Armenie Football, Leeds are now plotting a late offer to sign Eduard Spertsyan after already making their first approach and launching contact in an attempt to get the ball rolling.

James upgrade: Leeds are in late talks to seal "remarkable" £20m signing

Leeds United are reportedly in talks to sign a star who could be an upgrade on Dan James.

1 ByDan Emery Aug 31, 2025

The Krasnodar attacking midfielder would no doubt help solve Leeds’ problems going forward, and it could even be argued that he’d be a better arrival than the likes of Buonanotte.

Dubbed “underrated” by U23 scout Antonio Mango in 2023, Spertsyan has remained a player under the radar but could now get his chance to take the spotlight at Elland Road.

The Whites would also be signing a player who’s already been bang in form this season, with five goals and eight assists to his name in just 11 games.

New Rogers: Aston Villa open first talks to sign "exceptional" £30m PL star

Aston Villa kicked off the brand new Premier League season with a 0-0 stalemate against Newcastle United.

While that, of course, isn’t exactly the most exhilarating introduction back to top-flight life, Unai Emery’s Villans would come away from the opening day contest the happier of the two sides with the drab final result, having been reduced to ten men for the final 24 minutes after Ezri Konsa was dismissed.

Still, even despite that result, the Villans must kick on in the weeks to come in order to turn results like this one into a win.

Aston Villa make enquiry to sign £25m star

Villa haven’t been the flashiest side in the chaotic window to date, with just three incomings through the door.

New goalkeeper recruit Marco Bizot was handed his Villans debut against the Magpies and rose to the occasion with a clean sheet. At the same time, the West Midlands outfit’s most luxurious purchase of the summer – who joined for a hefty £30m – so far in Evan Guessand remained rooted to the bench throughout.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The cash could soon be splashed in a similarly lavish manner if reports are to be believed, with Caught Offside revealing that Emery and Co. have now enquired over signing Manchester City defender Rico Lewis.

It will be difficult for Villa to get a move over the line, however, with Nottingham Forest allegedly also in talks with the exciting 20-year-old, with the Tricky Trees bidding in the region of £30m recently for the City number 82.

Moreover, further interest in Lewis’ services comes from Premier League rivals Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur, with those named also lodging their own enquiries.

How Lewis can be Emery's next Rogers

Villa will keep their fingers crossed that they can race to the front of this ever-extending queue in the hope that they will be able to land a Morgan Rogers repeat if the two-time Premier League winner swaps the Etihad for Villa Park.

Before Rogers established himself as a top-flight “machine” donning claret and blue – as he was dubbed by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell – the England international did find himself in the same boat as Lewis in Manchester.

Unfortunately for the £100m-rated star, he would never go on to make the first-team breakthrough on the books of the Citizens, with countless loan spells greeting him, before he was officially let go of by Pep Guardiola’s men in 2023.

Morgan Rogers graphic

This must surely be a regret on the end of the early table-toppers, though, with Rogers going on to flex his muscles in some style in the West Midlands, as 17 goals and 17 assists have come his way from 79 appearances and counting.

Lewis would love for this same first-team spotlight to come down on him if he were to embark on a new challenge at Villa Park, having only started 40 of his 59 Premier League games to date at his boyhood employers, despite largely impressing when thrust into the senior mix.

He certainly stood out against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out as City brushed off any off-season cobwebs to trounce the Old Gold 4-0 at Molineux, with Lewis getting in on the act himself when teeing up Erling Haaland for the crucial opening strike.

The lively 20-year-old was lauded as “magical” by City journalist Amos Murphy during the game, with his blistering ability to bomb forward and create openings, further putting him on the same pedestal as Rogers.

With experience of the Champions League also under his belt, Emery would be very confident in gifting Lewis plenty of first-team opportunities on his arrival, much like the Spaniard showed no hesitancy in immediately handing Rogers the senior reins last year.

This will be a testing deal to seal, but if Villa want to make more waves this summer, they should go all out to land Lewis, who has also been labelled as “exceptional” by Guardiola for his standout, bit-part offerings at his hometown side.

Same agent as Barry: Everton battling to sign "fantastic" 27-goal striker

Having already reinforced their frontline with the addition of Thierno Barry, Everton have also reportedly joined the race to sign an impressive 27-goal striker.

The latest in Everton's incomings

The Toffees commenced the transfer window in statement fashion – welcoming Carlos Alcaraz in a permanent deal and talented forward Barry – and have since also welcomed new No.2 Mark Travers. But, if reports are anything to go by, they’re only just getting started. Recent rumours have suggested that The Friedkin Group could even spend as much as £150m on additions this summer.

Top of Everton’s wishlist on that front seems to be Manchester City’s James McAtee. The young midfielder is reportedly looking to leave the Etihad in pursuit of much-needed game time this summer, with a permanent switch to the Hill Dickinson Stadium now among his options.

Even as he struggled to hand McAtee a consistent place in his plans, Pep Guardiola took the time to praise the 22-year-old after he scored a hat-trick against Salford City.

The Spaniard told reporters: “I am so happy for him, he is a special player. A hat trick is not easy. He has an incredible sense in front of goal, he has the right tempo, he changed the rhythm to score and I am very happy for him.”

McAtee’s not the only name on Everton’s shortlist, however. The Toffees have also reportedly set their sights on Douglas Luiz and former Real Madrid gem Takefusa Kubo.

Attacking targets seem to be the priority in Merseyside too, whether it’s Kubo who arrives or an impressive 27-goal striker this summer.

Everton now battling to sign Mika Biereth

As reported by Caught Offside, Everton are now battling to sign Mika Biereth from AS Monaco this summer. The Toffees are joined by Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Wolves in a very busy race, but the fact that the forward is represented as the same agent as Barry could yet hand those at the Hill Dickinson Stadium an advantage.

Scoring a combined 40 goals between them last season, Biereth and Barry would form quite the partnership at Everton. In two moves, David Moyes would go from a fairly blunt attack to an underrated and dangerous frontline.

After watching on as Biereth missed a penalty then went on to score in a 2-1 victory against rivals OGC Nice last season, Monaco boss Adi Hutter told reporters: “This is his mentality, his character. He never gives up and he fights for the team. It is fantastic.”

Mika Biereth scores for Monaco

Six months on from welcoming the Dane into his side, however, and Hutter could be forced to bid farewell if Everton or others get their way this summer. And just like when he swapped Sturm Graz for France in January, Biereth would be more than ready to hit the ground running elsewhere.

Club expect Tottenham bid for "super player" after Kudus, he's keen to join

Kudus will undergo a medical in north London today ahead of his proposed move across the English capital, with Spurs and the Hammers finally reaching an agreement over the Ghanaian’s transfer.

It will be the first deal between both sides since Scott Parker’s move to White Hart Lane in 2011, ending the rivals’ unofficial transfer embargo whilst significantly reinforcing Frank’s attacking options.

Kudus was criticised for underperforming at times last season, but he can be a truly exceptional forward on his day, as evident by his debut campaign at the London Stadium.

The 24-year-old also boasts Champions League experience with Ajax, scoring four goals and bagging a further two assists in a group including eventual Serie A champions Napoli, Liverpool and Rangers during the 2022/2023 campaign.

Kudus can be deployed in a number of attacking roles as well, providing yet another boost for Frank, as the 51-year-old gears up for his first-ever year in charge of a ‘big six’ Premier League club.

Frank is expected to be backed with more useful additions before deadline day on September 1, with L’Equipe reporting earlier this week that Spurs have reopened discussions with Burnley over a deal for Maxime Esteve.

Scott Parker definitely won’t be keen on losing the towering 6 foot 4 Frenchman, who was a mainstay of his Clarets backline en route to their top flight return, and similar can be said of new Brentford boss Keith Andrews and star striker Yoane Wissa.

Tottenham are reportedly expressing a serious interest in Wissa, and the Bees are anticipating a proposal.

Brentford braced for Tottenham bid to sign Yoane Wissa

That is according to talkSPORT, who report that Brentford are braced for an offer from Tottenham to sign Wissa.

Brentford's YoaneWissacelebrates scoring their first goal

The Congolese centre-forward was just as crucial for Frank last season as Bryan Mbeumo, scoring 20 goals in all competitions, with 19 of them coming in the Premier League.

Brentford are very unlikely to green-light exits for both men in the same window, amid Man United’s ongoing talks for Mbeumo, but talkSPORT state that Wissa is keen on a move to Spurs as he eyes a reunion with Frank.

The price to get a potential deal done would be around £40 million, and Frank has already made his feelings on the 28-year-old crystal clear – branding Wissa one of his “super players” at the Gtech Community Stadium.

“I think they are super players,” said Frank about Wissa.

“Wissa, we knew, has always been a goalscorer. He scored seven goals in the first season and seven in the second in the Premier League, for a player that didn’t play much. It’s remarkable. I definitely think he is best as a 9. He’s got that nose for goals.”

Nottingham Forest join race to sign "fantastic" £50m+ Elanga replacement

With Newcastle United now confident that they’ll sign Anthony Elanga, Nottingham Forest have reportedly entered the race to sign his replacement in a deal worth over £50m.

Newcastle optimistic about Elanga deal

After rejecting Newcastle’s initial offer, some around the City Ground may have been hopeful that would be the end of the Magpies’ chase to sign Elanga, but that has proved to be far from the case. Instead, the Magpies have reportedly returned with an offer worth £55m and are now optimistic that they’ll secure the Swede’s signature, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Given the importance of Elanga in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side last season, it would be an undeniable blow if Forest were to lose the winger to Newcastle this summer. As ever though, their attention is likely to turn towards incomings of their own.

Already, those in the Midlands have welcomed a fresh attacking boost in the form of Botafogo star Igor Jesus and now they could shift their focus towards other reinforcements.

After putting pen to paper, Jesus told Forest’s official website: “I’m really happy to be a part of this new story, especially at a club like Nottingham Forest.

The next Murillo: Nottingham Forest lining up bid for £13m sensation

As Nuno Espírito Santo looks to bolster his Nottingham Forest backline, could they sign a “quality” centre-back who could be the next Murillo?

ByBen Gray Jul 2, 2025

“I didn’t have to think twice about the offer, I embraced it. I embraced the project that they sent me. I am delighted to be coming here and hope to do some great work. I will do my very best to achieve great results and bring joy to all the Forest family.”

With Jesus secure and Elanga potentially leaving, reports are now suggesting that Forest’s efforts have turned towards a winger who’s worth over £50m this summer.

Nottingham Forest join race to sign Lookman

According to reports in Spain, Nottingham Forest have now joined the race to sign Ademola Lookman from Atalanta, who are set to demand as much as €60m (£52m) to sell their star man this summer. Joined by Atletico Madrid and Midlands rivals Aston Villa in the battle for the Nigerian winger, Forest will hope that the funds gained by potentially selling Elanga are enough to jump ahead of their competitors.

Losing Elanga but replacing him with Lookman could quickly prove to be an act of genius by all involved at Nottingham Forest. The latter enjoyed a sensational season in Italy last time out, scoring 20 goals in all competitions, and could finally prove any doubters wrong in the Premier League following tough spells at Everton, Fulham and Leicester City.

Full of praise, former Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini told reporters last season: “Lookman became a fantastic player when he improved his perception of the team. He used to have a more individual approach.
