KL Rahul puts tough days behind him to essay match-winning role

India’s wicketkeeper-batter came into the game on the back of immense scrutiny of his Test form that eventually led to him losing his place

Jaffer: When he’s on song, Rahul is a treat to watch

“Strike rates are overrated.”It’s a KL Rahul quote that gets played out often on social media even if the context in which he said it tends to get ignored conveniently. But if there is an innings he could pick out to throw light on what he actually meant – not that he needs to – Rahul need not look any further than his match-winning 75 not out in the first ODI against Australia in Mumbai.Rahul walked in with India’s top order having been blown away in a small chase of 189. At 16 for 3 after the fifth over, India needed a rescue act. There was swing, zip off the pitch and lateral movement, elements that make Mitchell Starc menacing.Related

  • Rahul, Jadeja stay cool to seal tough chase of 189

It couldn’t have been a tougher return. Rahul at No. 5 has been prolific as a finisher in ODIs over the last two years, but the Rahul who came into this series was doing so on the back of immense scrutiny of his Test form that eventually led to him losing his place to Shubman Gill for the last two Tests. However, that he was played as a frontline wicketkeeper despite Ishan Kishan’s inclusion in the starting XI in Mumbai was a mark of the team management’s confidence. All said, this wasn’t a role that came about because of Rishabh Pant’s unavailability.Rahul had been backed to do the job even with Pant in the mix. This was, in a sense, a mere reiteration of the management’s belief in Rahul’s abilities. After all, the Rahul who now runs the ship did a similar job two decades earlier for the sake of team balance. The day began with an excellent catch diving to his right to dismiss Steven Smith. Rahul moved swiftly to cover enough ground to his right before putting in a dive to pouch Smith’s slash and celebrated wildly, the satisfaction of having pulled off the catch showing. The awkward landing, however, may have twinged a neck muscle or two, something that became apparent as he walked out to bat later.Needing to avert a Starc hat-trick, Rahul allayed nerves by opening his scoring with a neatly-timed cover drive first ball, but soon enough found himself challenged by Sean Abbott’s away-swingers. But Rahul had decided he wasn’t going to be bogged down.At the first sign of the bowler dropping short, Rahul brought out the cut. It’s a shot he profited the most from during his 91-ball knock in which he had an impressive control percentage of 83, as per ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball logs.A perfect high-elbow push through off from KL Rahul•Getty Images”I saw three wickets fall early, and Starc was really swinging the ball. When he gets the ball back in, he’s a dangerous bowler,” Rahul told Star Sports after India’s five-wicket win. “So I just wanted to bat through the first 15-20 balls and take it from there.”I wasn’t really thinking about runs, it wasn’t a big total, so I just wanted to give myself time, play normal cricket shots and not go searching for runs. A couple of boundaries early on settled my nerves a bit and got me going.”Just as Rahul began to settle in, he saw Gill get out to a loose drive to backward point. At 39 for 4, India were in dire need of a partnership. Rahul managed to find that support, first putting on 44 with Hardik Pandya and then an unbroken 108-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja, who was playing his first ODI in eight months. Rahul had a slice of luck on 41, when an outside edge flew wide of Smith at slip. That aside, it was a blemish-free knock.”Whoever I batted with, the talk was there’s a bit of help in the wicket, but we can’t go into our shell and look to play out a certain bowler,” Rahul explained. “[The mantra was to] just be positive in your mind and if the ball is there and if you can play proper cricket shot and gets some runs, that’s the only way you could put the pressure back on the bowlers.”We didn’t want to go into our shell and keep defending. We wanted to run hard, and put the loose balls away. We spoke of what are the shots we can play on this pitch. Any width we get, we can play the cut and if you’re good with your footwork, you can still survive get some runs and survive and get some runs. The guys I played with did that beautifully, it was fun batting with Hardik and Jadeja.”Rahul was particularly pleased batting alongside Jadeja. They ran well, and the left-right combination that can often throw bowlers off gear with their lines played into India’s hands. Adam Zampa may have prepared for a match-up with Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav, but here he was to contend with a left-right pair in Jadeja and Rahul. He delivered six wicketless overs for 37.”The minute a left-hander walked in, I got a few loose balls as well, and that happens to the best of bowlers,” Rahul said. “A left-hander walking in helped at that stage. He’s been in great form and he batted beautifully. He’s played a lot of cricket and knows exactly what to do at that position. We enjoy batting together. He runs fast, and I love someone who can run fast, run hard and put the pressure on the fielding team and bowlers. I’m happy we could do that today.”Nothing, however, brought a bigger smile to Rahul’s face than when he was asked about his wicketkeeping. Did he enjoy it?”Yeah, I did,” he smiled. “When there’s bounce, I really enjoy keeping. On low wickets, it’s a challenge physically. I enjoy playing here at the Wankhede. It was fun. The ball was doing a bit but as a ‘keeper, I was always in the game.”There were edges coming, and a few balls were down leg. On wickets where there’s help, you know the fast bowlers are going to try a little extra and spray the ball here and there times. That gave me an opportunity to dive and showcase my keeping skills which was fun.”

Taskin Ahmed creates space for pace in new Bangladesh bowling plan

Not for the first time in this series, Bangladesh’s quicks have given them a chance, and that’s rare for them in Test cricket

Mohammad Isam30-Apr-2021Taskin Ahmed hands his hat to his captain, takes the ball, grips it with his index and middle fingers, and gives it a bit of a flip… all fast bowlers do it, but it has been a curiously reassuring sight for followers of Bangladesh cricket in the ongoing Test series. That Bangladesh pace attack, led by Ahmed, nearly derailed Sri Lanka in the morning session on the second day of the second Test in Pallekele, and both Abu Jayed and Shoriful Islam supported Ahmed with meaningful spells. Maybe so little is expected from the Bangladesh pacers that even a three-wicket session is seen as a triumph but it can’t be denied that they made themselves relevant on the day, and that’s rare enough to be remarkable. The morning session was the third time in this Test series that the Bangladesh bowlers seemed to be getting things right. On the third evening of the first Test, Ahmed had Oshada Fernando caught down the leg side, after which Angelo Mathews fell to Taijul Islam. Dhananjaya de Silva came in, edged a couple that could have gone to hand with the right field placements, and Taijul couldn’t reach a caught-and-bowled chance from Dimuth Karunaratne. And the initiative was lost.Related

The quicks were impressive at the start of the second Test, too. They bowled 20 out of the first 26 overs – spin is usually in for Bangladesh by that stage – and Ahmed and Shorfiul got the batters to play and miss on a number of occasions before Ahmed found Karunaratne’s edge. But Najmul Hossain Shanto dropped the dolly at slip. And the initiative was taken away.Sri Lanka ended the first day on 291 for 1, so when Bangladesh again started well on Friday, it seemed like only a matter of time before they would run out of steam – Sri Lanka would turn a corner with a spate of boundaries, or the heat of Pallekele would have a say, or the unresponsive pitch would break their will. But after Sri Lanka got 18 runs in the first hour, Mominul Haque did the wise thing by bringing back Ahmed and Shoriful for second spells. Ahmed had already beaten the bat a number of times in a tight first spell, so he had his tail up, looking for wickets. He zeroed in on more length and short-of-length deliveries – he conceded just three runs off the 20 deliveries he bowled on these lengths, picking up one of his two wickets. The other one came from a short ball down the leg side. Shoriful and Jayed also targeted the good length; Jayed bowled a few more full deliveries than the others, but the general plan was to offer fewer half-volleys.As the first session on the first day, there wasn’t any swing on offer, but the bowlers found a bit of movement off the pitch. More crucially, they bowled consistent lines.Sri Lanka perhaps expected their ultra-defensive batting plan could be built upon once the bowlers tired. But Bangladesh remained disciplined, and they cashed in on the home side’s caution.Enthusiasm might help him get through this Test, but giving Shoriful Islam more long-form experience is key•AFP via Getty ImagesBangladesh’s pace bowlers also ended up giving the spin duo of Mehidy Hasan and Taijul a good platform. It is usually the other way around. But Ahmed’s improved consistency and the strong support acts made it a different sort of day for Bangladesh.Jayed may not have picked up a wicket in the series so far, but he is the highest wicket-taker among the pacers in the Bangladesh squad. They have got three four-wicket hauls out of him in the last 18 months, and he has bowled well in India, New Zealand and the West Indies, and recently at home too.Shoriful impressed on debut, not much by using his height or pace but by being consistent outside the off stump. He is young, having been fast-tracked from the Under-19 set-up, and this was his first first-class game in more than two years. Enthusiasm might help him get through this Test, but giving him more long-form experience is key.The three pace bowlers perhaps could have bowled a little better against Niroshan Dickwella and Ramesh Mendis later in the day, but better hands in the slips could have helped too – Ahmed did get Mendis’ edge, but Shanto dropped that. This day could, however, be a turning point for Bangladesh’s pace-bowling strategy – or the lack of it until this series. There hasn’t been much in the conditions, but the pace trio has kept Bangladesh going for much of the day. This isn’t common for them, not in the subcontinent.

Not just Madueke: Arsenal star had his best ever game for the club v Brugge

If you were to ask Mikel Arteta what a perfect game looked like ahead of kick-off on Wednesday night, he would have described something close to the one Arsenal delivered.

Sure, there were a few moments in the first half where Club Brugge looked threatening, but that is to be expected when a team is so heavily rotated.

Moreover, the Gunners were comfortably the better side for much of the game and came away with their 100% record in the Champions League still intact.

There were impressive performances across the pitch from Arteta’s men, including from one international who, like Noni Madueke, had his best game in an Arsenal shirt so far.

Noni Madueke's performance vs Club Brugge

Wednesday night’s game against Club Brugge could have been a banana-skin fixture for Arsenal.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

After all, the North Londoners were coming off a devastating defeat in the Premier League, were beset by injuries, and had to rotate a significant portion of the side.

However, the Gunners showed why so many consider them to be one of Europe’s best teams and swept the Belgian outfit aside.

The likes of Martin Zubimendi, Gabriel Martinelli, Ben White and Piero Hincapie all looked excellent, but the star of the show was undoubtedly Madueke.

The former Chelsea man was the busiest of the attackers in the first half and opened the scoring with a truly sensational solo goal.

The Englishman had the ball by the halfway line, beat one player, rode the challenge of another and then rifled the ball into the top corner from well outside the area.

The dynamic game-changer then continued to be a serious threat throughout the rest of the half, before scoring his second early in the second half, thanks to a smart run and a pinpoint accurate cross from Zubimendi.

All in all, it was a performance that more than justified the man of the match award, and has to go down as his best in an Arsenal shirt thus far.

Fortunately, the same could be said about another starter.

Arsenal's other standout star

Now, there are other players who deserve praise for their performances against Brugge, but the only other starter who comfortably had his best game in an Arsenal shirt was Christian Nørgaard.

The Danish midfielder has been something of a forgotten man since his arrival in the summer, playing just 302 minutes of football before last night.

However, while he did finally get another start on Wednesday night, just his fourth all year, it wasn’t in the middle of the park; it was at centre-back.

Understandably, such a move left some in the fan base feeling a little nervous ahead of kick-off, but there was no need to be, as the 31-year-old was practically faultless for the entire match.

Yes, he did pick up a yellow card, but he also made a crucial interception in the penalty area in the first half, and as football.london’s Tom Canton put it, looked totally ‘unfazed by the unfamiliar position.’

That might sound a little hyperbolic, but the former Brentford captain’s statistics prove otherwise.

For example, in his 93 minutes of action, the £65k-per-week monster won 100% of his tackles, took 72 touches, won three of four ground duels, made clearances and two interceptions, recovered the ball twice, blocked a shot, completed 50 passes and even played two long balls.

In fact, the København-born veteran looked so good at the back, both with and without the ball, that there might even need to be a conversation about him playing there against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Ultimately, it was a great night at the office for Arsenal on Wednesday, and like Madueke, Nørgaard undoubtedly put in his best performance since his move in the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday respond to Sheffield United takeover merger

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly responded to the chance to merge with Sheffield United by their most unexpected takeover candidates yet.

Kris Wigfield sends fresh Sheffield Wednesday warning

The Owls have set a soft deadline of December 5 and have received proof of funds from several candidates as they look to narrow their list down to those ready to launch worthwhile bids.

The gravity of their situation was slammed home by their defeat in the Steel City derby last weekend, with Sheffield United brushing them to one side in dominant fashion. Destined for League One after their points deduction, Sheffield Wednesday desperately need their takeover to go to plan.

Co-administrator Kris Wigfield admitted after that defeat that there may be more difficult news on the way, too. He told the club’s social media accounts: “It will not be like this forever.

“At the same time, I have to be honest: there may be more difficult news coming, including the possibility of a further points deduction. I want to be upfront about that because our supporters deserve transparency. But I also want to be clear: the period between now and January should be as tough as it gets.”

Reports have already mentioned a number of names among the takeover candidates, including former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley. The former Magpies chief is seemingly looking to get back into English football and could restore his reputation at Hillsborough. But he’s not the only candidate.

John McEvoy has also been mentioned since Sheffield Wednesday entered administration and it will be interesting to see if he’s among the final names. What is for sure is that he’s unlikely to be joined on the final list of names by those at Bramall Lane who reportedly offered a shock merger.

Owls respond to Sheffield United offer

As reported by the Telegraph, Sheffield United’s American owners were among the Sheffield Wednesday takeover candidates and were planning to merge the two clubs if their approach was successful. To no surprise, the Owls quickly shut that down and have been fortunate enough to have plenty of interest from elsewhere.

Not many at Hillsborough believed it could get worse than Dejphon Chansiri, but a merger with Sheffield United would be their nightmare scenario.

It would take their club from administration to the very end. It would end a historic rivalry and change the landscape of football in Sheffield. The Owls, thankfully, saw sense and shut down any idea of a merger or takeover by the Blades’ American owners.

Sheffield Wednesday now braced for imminent "concrete" takeover bid

Things are looking up for the Owls.

How Barcelona left Lionel Messi ‘deceived & betrayed’ when cruelly dashing return dream for Argentine GOAT

Lionel Messi was reportedly left feeling “deceived and betrayed” by Barcelona after seeing his dreams of making an emotional return to Camp Nou as a player cruelly dashed. The Argentine superstar was forced out of Catalunya in 2021, as he headed to Paris Saint-Germain, but saw an agreement lined up two years later that would have allowed professional steps to be retraced.

  • Messi reached out to Barcelona after winning 2022 World Cup

Having seen Messi – alongside his wife Antonela and their three children – endure a tough time in France, with the South American icon struggling to settle when stepping off his career-long comfort zone, Barca explored the option of re-signing a fan favourite.

Having left as a free agent, he dropped back into that pool when reaching the end of his contract at Parc des Princes in the summer of 2023. Messi had become a World Cup winner by that point and was on course to collect a record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or.

Shortly after capturing a global title in Qatar, Messi is reported to have reached out to close friend and former team-mate Xavi – who was Barcelona’s head coach at the time. Contact was made on January 6, 2023. A day later, the Liga giants are said to have “got to work”.

Messi left stunned as deal never materialised

With Messi expressing a desire to head back to his spiritual home, the Blaugrana were confident that a deal could be lined up. Both sides of those discussions were said to be “excited” about a possible reunion. Over the course of six months, Barca were able to gain approval for Messi’s return – with the all-time great prepared to take a sizable wage cut.

According to , the day after Barcelona won the Liga title at the end of the 2022-23 campaign, the Messi family “received a call from the highest levels” at Camp Nou. They were informed that a “transfer couldn’t be done”. That led to “total devastation” in the Messi camp, with the Argentine GOAT left “deceived and betrayed” for the second time – having previously believed that an extension could be agreed at Barca prior to his tearful departure for PSG.

  • Messi return to Barcelona as a player ruled out

Messi is said to have accepted that he “would never play for the club of his life again”. That remains the case in 2025, with the 38-year-old now on the books of MLS side Inter Miami. He has agreed fresh terms there through 2028.

Barca president Joan Laporta has said of the club’s all-time leading scorer – who has 672 goals to his name – returning in a playing capacity: “Out of respect to Messi, all the club staff and the club members, it's not right for me to speculate on something that would not be realistic, and it's not the moment to do it.”

Spanish journalist has reiterated that stance, posting on social media: “Leo Messi, under no circumstances is considering a return to Barcelona as a footballer. That chapter is closed. He has a long-term contract in Miami. He goes season by season. If he returns, it would be more for the offices, in the sports area. He is Barcelona's heritage and hopefully he returns someday.”

MLS star Messi will move back to Barcelona in retirement

Messi has admitted as much, telling of his plans to move back to Catalunya once he has finished chasing the American dream: “I really want to go back there, we miss Barcelona a lot. My wife and I, the kids, are constantly talking about Barcelona and the idea of moving back. We have our house there, everything, so that's what we want. I'm really looking forward to going back to the stadium when it's finished because since I left for Paris, I haven't been back to Camp Nou, and then they moved to Montjuic.”

Messi recently took in a secret visit to Camp Nou, as that iconic venue undergoes a serious redevelopment project. Even Laporta claims to have been unaware that the mercurial No.10 was back in familiar territory, with it still being suggested that a friendly or exhibition game could be lined up that allows Messi to grace the field in Barcelona one last time.

£90,000-a-week Leeds player who started vs Burnley could leave in January

Leeds United have endured a mixed start to life in the Premier League, and a path may now be emerging for one of their players to depart in January.

Leeds United look to recover after Burnley defeat

Points are a precious commodity in the top-flight, and the Whites will be feeling frustrated that they couldn’t make their chances count against Burnley in a frustrating defeat at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Despite retaining a vastly superior expected goals total of 2.63 to the hosts’ 0.45, Scott Parker managed to get the better of Daniel Farke, who expressed a sense of frustration at not being able to come away with a positive result after an afternoon of failing to hit the target.

With West Ham United to come next Friday, Leeds will hope to build on a mixed start to life in the top-flight, but January will be an important month in the context of finding stars who can stave off the threat of relegation.

Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer is a Whites target, and they may now be set to offload one of their stars to make room for mid-season arrivals.

Leeds United could offload Jack Harrison in January

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Leeds could offload Jack Harrison in January if they manage to bring in attacking reinforcements, even after he started in the defeat to Burnley on Saturday.

He explained: “Look, for Leeds right now, they’re probably looking to strengthen the squad rather than weaken it. Particularly in attacking areas, where Farke is planning to strengthen in January. A lot will depend on what Leeds are able to do in the transfer window themselves.

“If they are able to bring in attacking reinforcements then maybe that could open the door to a move for Jack Harrison.”

Earning £90,000 per week at Elland Road, he is the second-highest paid player at Leeds and being able to alleviate space on the wage bill could suit all parties, albeit he is a hard-working winger who has a credible Premier League CV based on his time in Yorkshire and at Everton.

However, he is far from first choice when everyone is fit, so a departure would possibly be a sensible option if clubs were to come forward with proposals.

USMNT's Benjamin Cremaschi makes Serie A debut for Parma in 2-1 loss to Roma

Benjamin Cremaschi, the 20-year-old American midfielder on loan from Inter Miami, made his long-awaited Serie A debut for Parma on Oct. 29, coming on as a 76th-minute substitute in a 2-1 defeat to AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. He replaced Adrián Bernabé as part of a triple change by coach Fabio Pecchia with Parma trailing 1-0.

AFPTwo months in the making

Cremaschi’s debut came nearly two months after his loan move from Inter Miami was announced on Sept. 2. The midfielder joined the Italian club on a deal through June 2026, with Parma holding an option to make the transfer permanent.

Prior to this appearance, Cremaschi had been named to Parma's matchday squad twice but remained unused as he adapted to Italian football. His introduction against Roma marked a significant milestone in his European career after accumulating 107 appearances for Inter Miami across all competitions.

AdvertisementAFPParma's struggles

Cremaschi entered a difficult match situation, with Roma leading 1-0 when he stepped onto the Stadio Olimpico pitch. The hosts would double their advantage through Artem Dovbyk in the 80th minute before Parma pulled one back through Alessandro Circati five minutes later.

Despite the late push, Parma couldn't find an equalizer in the 2-1 defeat. The result continues a challenging start to the season for Parma, who sit in the bottom half of the Serie A table at 15th after a difficult opening to their campaign.

GettyLoan move follows time at Inter Miami

Cremaschi's loan to Parma came after he publicly expressed frustration about his situation at Inter Miami under coach Javier Mascherano. In August, the midfielder voiced concerns about inconsistent playing time and being deployed in various positions rather than in his preferred role.

"I'm frustrated, I want to play. I think the most important thing for me is to be at a very high level, and to get there, I need minutes and experience," Cremaschi said. "I've played very little in these recent games, and I don't think it's because of my level."

Premier League winner Ferguson loved seen at Wrexham amid Parkinson talks

Wrexham have endured a difficult start to the Championship campaign and could be set for a change in the dugout, with speculation over movement likely to be fueled further by a recent known face who has been spotted at the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham hold Phil Parkinson talks after QPR defeat

After a run of three defeats in five league matches this term, the Red Dragons find themselves in the Championship relegation zone after a 3-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson is a man under pressure after recording a bigger net spend than the likes of Aston Villa, Celtic and Rangers during the summer, and talks have now taken place over the Wrexham manager possibly being replaced after a poor run of results, according to talkSPORT.

Internally, club chiefs could take a ruthless approach as they look to build on three successive promotions under the 57-year-old, and his job may now be under threat after four years in North Wales.

Speaking after his side fell to another damaging loss, Parkinson lamented his team’s contribution at both ends of the pitch, saying: “The previous home games, we looked like we can create chances and score. But the goals we conceded, one one hand, you’ll say they were clinical, but when we analyse them all, we’ll know we could have done better.

“The strikers are better (in the Championship). To be fair to Burrell and Kone, they were in League One last year.”

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have brought plenty of big names to the Racecourse during their tenure, and supporters may be intrigued to know that a former Premier League winner was in attendance at their latest encounter in the second tier.

Former Manchester United star Phil Jones spotted at Wrexham

Taking to social media platform X, Mailsport correspondent Nathan Salt shared a picture of former Manchester United star Phil Jones in the stands as Wrexham lost out to QPR.

The 33-year-old, who was once dubbed “phenomenal” by Sir Alex Ferguson due to his versatility, was at the Red Devils working voluntarily within their Under-18 set-up.

Salt later explained why Jones was invited to take in the action, stating: “Been one suggestion put to me by someone I respect in the game that Wrexham have been putting feelers out to add to the coaching staff. Jones was in with Utd’s U18s on a voluntary basis last season. Could fit the bill.”

Wrexham CEO Mike Williamson is the one who invited him to the match, per the reporter, suggesting that movement could be on the cards one way or another at the Welsh outfit.

With Parkinson’s future at the club uncertain, it remains to be seen where Jones, a Premier League winner with the Red Devils, may fit, albeit he would likely be ruled out of taking over himself due to a lack of senior coaching experience.
