Man United Blow As Addition Of £52m-Rated Defender Hindered

Man United's pursuit of Kim Min-jae could take a hit unless the club complete a takeover soon, according to the Italian media via Sport Witness.

What is the latest on Kim Min-jae to Man United?

The Red Devils have been in the midst of takeover talks for months now, with both billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatar-based Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani keen to try and complete a deal to own to the Premier League club.

After years of fan protest, current owners the Glazers are now prepared to sell on the Old Trafford side and are open to bids for them. Currently, the offer that most appeals to the American businessmen appears to be Al Thani's, who is prepared to splash out over £4.8 billion in order to complete a "full takeover" of United.

Premier League, Manchester United, Manchester United transfers, Manchester United transfer news, Kim Min-Jae,

However, there is no official deal in place yet so the takeover is still yet to be completed, and that is now having some effect on potential transfers for Erik Ten Hag's team. According to the Italian media via Sport Witness, a bid for Kim Min-jae is now being hindered by the uncertainty over the Red Devils' ownership.

The report states that whilst United are prepared to splash up to 60 million Euros (£52m) to bring him to the Premier League, they are "limited" in their ability to start signing fresh players until they complete any takeover deal. It means that whether Ten Hag can add the Napoli man – and potentially any other signings – could depend on the Glazers and their sale of United.

Would Kim Min-jae be a good signing for Man United?

The defender has been excellent during his first season in Italy, with the player being awarded a rating of 7.10 on WhoScored for his showings in Serie A. It means that he currently ranks as one of the top five best players at the club this campaign.

The 26-year-old has not taken long to adapt at all, with Kim managing 1.6 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game on average. It once more puts him within the top five in the Napoli squad in those areas this season and showcases just how solid at the back he can be, even in such a competitive division.

Even former professionals are now heaping the praise on the player, with Danny Murphy calling the centre-back "sensational" after his performances for his new club.

His showings suggest that he would have no problem making the move over to England now too and it means that United could have themselves a potential brick wall at the back if they were to sign Kim.

"Impressive" £120K-p/w Ace Can Ease Liverpool’s Firmino Blow

Liverpool have struggled to maintain their high standards this season with months of inconsistent performances and injuries to key players plaguing their ability to challenge both domestically and in Europe.

The Reds were quickly knocked out of every opportunity to add another trophy to their illustrious collection and are now struggling in the Premier League too, with the side currently nine points adrift of a Champions League qualifying spot inside the top four with just seven games remaining.

Indeed, Jurgen Klopp has had to contend with a number of injuries this season, as the likes of Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita have all sustained long-term injuries at various stages of the campaign, and now the German coach has been dealt another blow ahead of the final few weeks.

The Liverpool manager took to his pre-match press conference ahead of the Nottingham Forest clash at Anfield to reveal that Roberto Firmino has suffered a muscle injury and will miss at least three fixtures:

“Unfortunately, Bobby picked up a muscle issue a little bit,”

“We will see how long that takes. It’s not too serious but he is definitely out for tomorrow and next week we have two more games, I would say they are impossible as well and then we will see. We have to take it day by day.”

Whilst the Brazilian's contributions will be sorely missed over the upcoming week of congested fixtures for the Reds, it is a massive opportunity for Cody Gakpo to settle into Firmino's famous false nine role over the remainder of the season.

Is Cody Gakpo the rightful Firmino heir?

The versatile Dutchman has had a slow start since his arrival on Merseyside in January, considering he was one of the most prolific forwards in Europe with 13 goals and 17 assists tallied up for PSV Eindhoven in all competitions in the first half of the season.

However, it would be unfair to criticise Gakpo's impact as he has had to settle into a team that was already struggling for consistency in their performances, and Klopp's strong desire for the player to take on a slightly different role than he was used to in the Netherlands has perhaps hindered his ability to hit the ground running.

Despite earning most of his experience on the left flank over his career so far, the £120k-per-week ace – hailed "impressive" by journalist Declan Carr – has been mostly deployed in the centre-forward role for Liverpool and started to make the role his own in the monumental 7-0 victory over Manchester United last month.

His pressing skills in the three-man press against the Red Devils' defence helped him to become massively disruptive out of possession and seek out pockets of space in progressive areas of the pitch, which led to him finding the back of the net twice with his opener in the seven-goal thriller unravelling his opponents.

This snippet of Gakpo's style of play at Anfield mirrors that of Firmino, who has become famously renowned for his selfless yet impactful style of play in the false nine, which has been a key component to the outstanding success that Liverpool have achieved in the last half a decade.

Now with Firmino unavailable for selection and out of contract this summer, it is the perfect chance for Gakpo to make the role his own and mould his skillset to become a real force of nature in the position ahead of next season.

Not only that, but Gakpo's Netherlands team-mate Virgil van Dijk revealed that Firmino has been working with the newly-signed player to help him to understand the important role:

"It’s a very difficult position to play, but he learns from one of the best each and every day with Bobby Firmino,"

"The winter isn’t an easy time to come to a club but Cody is settling in very well. He has to keep going, keep the confidence, keep the belief. I think he will be fine for this club. He’s a fantastic player."

With that being said, it will be interesting to see whether Gakpo will completely clone Firmino's difficult-to-grasp position or instead put his personal touch on the attacking threat with a less selfless approach in front of goal than his predecessor.

Either way, it is a bittersweet time for Liverpool supporters as they bid farewell to a club legend after nine years of impeccable service and welcome the next generation of talent who will hopefully bring more success to the red side of Merseyside.

Elliott Available for Liverpool’s Clash With Arsenal

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott will be available for the Reds' crunch Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, according to reliable journalist David Lynch.

How has Elliott done this season?

The Reds had another forgettable game in midweek away to Chelsea in a "tame" goalless stalemate. It meant more points were dropped in the battle for a top-four finish, while Newcastle United and Manchester United's wins on Wednesday night further hampered their chances.

Someone who played no part against the Blues was Elliott, who missed his first game of the season after making 41 appearances in 2022/23 to date.

The youngster was hailed as "exceptional" earlier in the season and has clearly been a favourite of Jurgen Klopp's given his increased playing time this term.

And in an update on his situation, there is positive news for the Merseysiders ahead of their weekend meeting with the Gunners.

Harvey Elliott for Liverpool

Is Elliott fit for the Arsenal clash?

Taking to Twitter, Football Insider reporter David Lynch confirmed that Elliott was simply rested against Chelsea and will be in contention to start at home to Premier League leaders Arsenal this weekend:

"Harvey Elliott expected to return to the Liverpool squad for Sunday's meeting with Arsenal. No injury concern behind his omission against Chelsea – more a recognition of a remarkable 41-game workload so far this season."

This is an undoubted boost for Liverpool, with Elliott someone who hasn't necessarily been perfect this season, but has contributed more than many struggling midfielders, registering two league assists – which is as many as Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner combined. At 19, he is already playing with a maturity beyond his years, scoring twice in the Champions League and also averaging one tackle per game in Europe's premier club competition. The Englishman deserves to come back into the side against Arsenal, with his guile capable of opening up the visitors' defence, as highlighted by 11 assists on loan at Blackburn Rovers back in 2020/21. He also boasts seven goal contributions this term, having had three in his senior Liverpool career at the start of this campaign. If Thiago is fit, it could make the most sense to start the Spaniard and Elliott in the No 8 roles, with either Fabinho or Henderson anchoring the midfield. The latter pair have been panned for their poor seasons, and if their lacklustre displays continue, starting both together could be a huge issue against a Gunners side brimming with confidence as they continue their title tilt.

There is also an argument to say that Elliott's lack of physicality and 5-foot-7 frame could be an issue on the day up against Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka, who both top six feet. However, as mentioned, we think Elliott merits a starting berth more than others, especially after getting a rest in midweek.

Phil Hay doesn’t believe Leeds should’ve had a penalty

Despite some late drama at Elland Road, Phil Hay doesn’t believe Leeds United should’ve been awarded a penalty on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Leeds salvage a point

Leeds will have walked away from Elland Road perhaps not knowing how they didn’t taste defeat once again under Javi Gracia with only a Jack Harrison wonder strike salvaging a point.

It wasn’t also just what Leeds had done on the pitch, it was also how wasteful Brighton were in front of goal as they squandered several gold opportunities to pick up a huge three points in their European push.

Despite their lack of cutting edge in the final third, Leeds could well have sneaked away with a win had VAR intervened and awarded them a penalty which Rodrigo was desperate for.

The Latest: Rodrigo wasn’t fouled at the end

Even though Rodrigo went down under a challenge late in the game, Hay has insisted on The Phil Hay Show that it probably wasn’t enough to earn themselves a spot kick.

He said: (33:45) “Looking at the replay I thought first time around that Webster got the ball and then the player coming across from the other side got the ball and then did Webster bring him down first?

“I don’t think it was [a penalty] I thought it was a fair decision.”

The Verdict: A fair decision for everyone

If Leeds had been awarded a penalty right at the death and it was converted by whoever would’ve taken the spot kick, it could well have been the turning point in their season under Javi Gracia who’s still only won one game.

However, given that even a Leeds reporter in the form of Hay didn’t believe it should’ve been spot kick and seemed as though there was too much going on to determine who made the initial contact probably suggests it wasn’t a penalty.

While Leeds fans will have been desperate for the spot kick to be awarded, they can’t be pinning their hopes on refereeing decisions going their way, they must start picking up points and wins on their own accord.

Aston Villa could sign their own Frenkie De Jong

Aston Villa are reportedly the latest English side to show an interest in Real Betis midfielder William Carvalho and the Portuguese star could prove to be Unai Emery’s own version of Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong at Villa Park.

Could Aston Villa sign William Carvalho?

According to reports from Spain, Villa, Newcastle United and West Ham are all keen on signing the 30-year-old when the summer transfer window opens.

Despite winning the Copa del Rey last season and reaching the final 16 of the Europa League this year, the report claims that Betis are undergoing financial difficulties and could be forced to sell some of their top talents, with Carvalho one of the favourites to leave.

The defensive midfielder has long been linked with a Premier League switch, with all the top clubs reportedly keen at one point or another, but he will make just his second appearance on English soil when Betis face Manchester United at Old Trafford this evening.

Transfermarkt currently values the Portugal international at €16m (£14m) so he could prove to be a bargain signing for Emery in the summer as he looks to improve upon his midfield options at the Midlands club.

Who is William Carvalho similar to?

According to FBref, the most similar player to Carvalho when compared to other midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues is Barcelona star, Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutch midfielder, who was heavily linked with a switch to Manchester United last summer, has established himself as one of the best in the world in his position since joining from Ajax in 2019.

The 25-year-old’s impressive 7.10 rating from WhoScored in La Liga this season sees him ranked as the fourth-best player in Xavi’s squad at the Nou Camp, so signing a similar player certainly looks to be a good idea for Emery, given that no player in his squad has averaged above a 6.8 rating from WhoScored in the Premier League.

As per FBref, Carvalho and De Jong have registered extremely similar stats with regard to goals and assists per 90 (both 0.17), tackles (both 29) and successful take-ons (35 vs 34), proving they are both all-action assets from a central area.

WhoScored also suggests that both Carvalho and De Jong excel at passing and like to do layoffs, so they are clearly similar types of players.

Therefore, Villa should definitely be looking to bring the “extraordinary” £30k-per-week midfielder, in the words of Paulo Bento, to the Premier League this summer.

Newcastle: Isak could terrify Klopp again

Newcastle United are back in Premier League action at home to Liverpool this evening, with Eddie Howe’s side hoping to maintain their remarkable 17-game unbeaten run in the top flight.

The Magpies’ last defeat in the division had in fact come against today’s opponents at Anfield back in August, with the Tynesiders having been cruelly denied a point on the night as teenager Fabio Carvalho fired home a winner in the eighth minute of injury to complete a second-half comeback from the Reds.

Despite the end result, that encounter had proven a particularly impressive introduction to life in English football for club-record signing Alexander Isak, with the £63m man likely to be hoping to replicate that impact by terrifying Jurgen Klopp’s team again this time around.

Will Isak play against Liverpool?

The reverse fixture on Merseyside saw the towering Swede make an instant impression in the black and white jersey after superbly firing his team ahead from a tight angle, with the former Real Sociedad ace showing remarkable composure to lash his shot into the roof of the net following Sean Longstaff’s clever sliding pass.

The 23-year-old then appeared to have doubled his tally after the interval with another stunning and clinical effort, only to see that curling strike cruelly ruled out for offside, with the 6 foot 4 titan having initially shown brilliant skill to make space for himself inside the area.

Despite only having 18 touches on that goalscoring debut, Isak had undoubtedly sparked excitement among the Newcastle support due to his finishing prowess, while also catching the eye with his physical attributes after winning four of his six duels.

That wonderful performance received notable praise from talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy, who was already looking to the future after suggesting that the striker could go on to be worth in the region of £100m.

However, since that ‘major impact’ in which he had ‘Liverpool riled’ – as Chronicle Live’s Lee Ryder wrote at the time – the former Borussia Dortmund starlet has been unable to truly replicate such quality, with injury woes ensuring that he has been restricted to just six league appearances, scoring three goals.

The hope will be that the £120k-per-week marksman will have benefitted from his 90-minute outing against Bournemouth last week, with the “complete” asset – as lauded by his former Willem II coach Adrie Koster – no doubt raring to go once more against Klopp and co tonight.

With goals having been in short supply of late for Howe’s team as a whole, having scored only three times in their last six league games, a change in fortunes will be needed at St James’ Park this evening.

On the evidence of his last outing against Liverpool, Isak could be the man to make the difference for Newcastle in attack.

Everton: Jordan makes Tarkowski claim following Dyche links

TalkSport presenter Simon Jordan has backed potential Everton boss Sean Dyche to get James Tarkowski performing at a ‘better level’ at Everton.

The Lowdown: Dyche close to appointment

Sky Sports reported that the Toffees are set to employ Dyche as their new manager following the sacking of former boss Frank Lampard, Everton currently finds themselves 19th in the Premier League.

Tarkowski is a player that Dyche knows well, as he played the defender on 212 occasions as a manager of Burnley in all competitions.

The Englishman made the move to Merseyside last summer as a free agent after his contract with the Clarets expired. The 30-year-old has featured in 20 league matches so far for the Toffees.

The Latest: Jordan backs Dyche

Jordan spoke live on TalkSport about Everton’s decision to hire Dyche and backed him to do well there. He was very confident that Tarkowski will improve with him at the helm.

He stated (0:06), “I think there’s a lot about Sean Dyche that gets misrepresented. He doesn’t misrepresent himself or his belief in himself because he is very confident and believes that he is capable of doing the job and any job that’s put in front of him.

“It’s a difficult job, but he’s a grown-up and he understands his way around. He’s got enough experience to be able to manage the shortcomings of the squad that they’ve got.

“He’s got a couple of players there that he knows, Dwight McNeil, about time he turned up.

“I’m sure that he’ll get James Tarkowski performing at a better level, I think it’s a sensible, half-decent appointment.”

The Verdict: Dyche could be the man

We believe that Dyche could be the one to keep Everton up this season and improve Tarkowski in the process. Indeed, under Dyche’s guidance he appeared twice for Gareth Southgate’s England and was linked with a number of top clubs, so it’s safe to say the English boss definitely knows how to get the best out of him.

His last five league matches with the Toffees have certainly been difficult for him, conceding 11 goals in the process, with losses to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and West Ham United.

Having said that, it’s not been all doom and gloom for Tarkowski in an Everton shirt this season. The BBC’s Danny Murphy raved about him on Match of the Day back in October, labelling him as ‘the best English centre-half we have that’s playing regularly’. Though, he was slammed for his ‘dreadful’ display against Southampton earlier on this season.

Dyche kept Burnley in the Premier League for eight years, so he knows how to keep a team up when the pressure is on.

Everton: Moussa Dembele can get DCL firing

Everton’s season has been nothing short of disastrous, with the Toffees once again poised to struggle at the foot of the table.

Despite this, and their current position of joint-bottom, the hierarchy are yet to put their hands in their pockets to try and pay their way out of this mess. It is clearly a squad lacking the quality to stay up, and yet with nearly a third of a window done, there has been little indication of any concrete rumours.

As the division’s second-lowest scorers, up front is the role that certainly needs filling.

Despite that, one of Frank Lampard’s reported targets Danny Ings seems set to now move to relegation rival West Ham United, further adding insult to injury.

They need someone through the door immediately, if at the very least to offer Dominic Calvert-Lewin some much-needed competition for his striker spot.

An alternative that they now seem to be scrambling for is Lyon forward Moussa Dembele, who saw rumours emerge about his future in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Frenchman has just six months left on his £69k-per-week deal, and as such has caught the eye as a potential cut-price option for the financially restricted Blues.

It must be said that, should they complete this deal, it would represent an immense coup for a club currently in disarray despite his poor form this season.

With just two goals to his name this season, it may seem like the 26-year-old is hardly the answer to their long-standing issues in front of goal.

However, he has proven on numerous occasions throughout his career that he can be a clinical asset when called upon, as last season he bagged 21 times in Ligue 1 whilst delivering four assists.

This marks an improvement Calvert-Lewin’s best goal tally in the Premier League of 16, which he would hope to recapture should his fitness prevail once more.

Because of this impressive scoring run, Dembele actually ranks in the top 5% for non-penalty goals when compared to other strikers in Europe’s top five leagues.

What stands as a further testament to his ability is the wide array of talent he is likened to on FBref’s ‘similar players’ model. The list boasts Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski, Victor Osimhen and Olivier Giroud.

With quality to rival many of these, the former Celtic man certainly would provide a fine alternative to the English striker currently starting at Goodison Park.

Brendan Rodgers once lauded all the qualities that would surely make him a success in England, as he claimed: “Moussa was everything with his power and pace.” The now-Leicester City boss continued: “His opponent at centre-back was strong but Moussa is so powerful with ability, touch and work rate.”

He would push Calvert-Lewin to his limits, likely usurping him if his quality shines through, but hopefully inspiring a fire in the English forward’s belly to rediscover himself.

That said, the deal would spur at least one of them to get the goals that will secure safety.
