Will Pucovski suffers another concussion after stumble while taking a run

Pucovski, the captain of the Cricket Australia XI, was facing the England Lions on the Gold Coast and was later subbed out of the match

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Feb-2020Will Pucovski has suffered another concussion after stumbling while taking a run playing for the Cricket Australia XI against England Lions at Metricon Stadium. The incident, which took place on Pucovski’s 22nd birthday, occurred when his bat got stuck in the turf as he went for a quick single. He was helped from the ground and retired hurt, later failing a concussion test, and was subbed out of the match. Medical staff will continue to monitor Pucovski, who was named captain for the three one-day matches, over the coming days.Pucovski’s career has been impacted by a number of concussion issues, stemming from a blow he took while playing football at school, which led to him needing to take six months away from sport. He has been struck in a variety of ways including from a wild throw, while batting at training, and from hitting his head on a door at home. One of the concussions he suffered also came on his 19th birthday in 2017 when he was making his first-class debut for Victoria and was struck on the head in the field when a delivery jumped off the outfield. He missed the rest of the season and at the start of the following summer was again struck, this time while batting in the one-day competition, and suffered delayed symptoms then in March 2018 was hit during another Sheffield Shield match.Earlier this season, Pucovski was close to making his Test debut against Pakistan before withdrawing from contention during the Australia A match in Perth for mental health reasons. He returned to play for Victoria in late November and during the Big Bash has been turning out in club cricket and leading the Victoria 2nd XI.The opening one-day match went the way of England Lions as Sam Hain struck an unbeaten 122 and added 154 for the fourth wicket with Laurie Evans (94) after the Lions had slipped to 3 for 32 in their chase. Dan Lawrence helped seal the win with an unbeaten 50 off 40 balls.Earlier, the Queensland and Brisbane Heat batsman Max Bryant had slammed 102 off 60 balls in a power-packed start to the match as he dominated the Lions attack. The score was 127 when Bryant fell to legspinner Mason Crane in the 18th over and a short while later Pucovski was forced to retire hurt. The Lions hauled the innings back impressively to restrict the CA XI to 8 for 281 as the spinners, Crane and Lawerence, went for just 79 in their 20 overs

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Martin Zubimendi did not play a very big part in Spain's Euro 2024 campaign. However, after an injury to Rodri in the final in Berlin, the Real Sociedad midfielder played a phenomenal half of football to help La Roja conquer England. Additionally, the 25-year-old has impressed with La Real over the last few seasons and has been one of Imanol Alguacil's top players.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Manchester United, who are looking to sign a defensive midfielder this summer, are keeping tabs on the Spaniard, however, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport that a move this summer could be complicated as Zubimendi is not keen on leaving his boyhood club. Additionally, Real Sociedad are open to selling the 25-year-old only at his release clause of £51 million ($65.6m) which could be difficult for the Red Devils to attain unless they make sales first.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Zubimendi has previously been heavily hailed by Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente as one of the best midfielders in the world. In November of last year, the 63-year-old was asked about who he voted for at FIFA's The Best award and said: "Rodri, Haaland and Messi…, and by the way last year I voted for Julián Álvarez, which caused some commotion…, but also for Bellingham and in third place for Modric. But no one knew Jude Bellingham, then, except in Madrid, of course. He has had a sensational explosion. He is a different player. But well, Rodrigo has been my first choice this time because we have the two best centre-halfs in the world: Rodri and Zubimendi."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR ZUBIMENDI?

The Spaniard has been the target of interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Bayern Munich but has maintained his position of respecting his contract with Real Sociedad which runs until the summer of 2027, and it is likely that unless a club reaches an agreement with La Real, he will not look to leave the club.

Report shares devastating PSR update on new Everton points deduction

A twist has emerged regarding a second points deduction for Everton this season despite reports earlier in the week that the Blues were confident of avoiding punishment.

Everton's points deduction nightmare

Many Toffees supporters will likely be delighted to see this season come to an end, with the hope being that Sean Dyche's side can battle for their lives and once again preserve their Premier League status.

While results have been good at times, their efforts have been made extremely difficult by points penalties that have come their way, with 10 initially being deducted earlier in the season, only to see that number narrowed to six.

It means that Everton sit 16th in the league table with 10 matches remaining this term, but they are only four points clear of the relegation zone, highlighting the importance of the upcoming fixtures.

There is still the threat of further punishments coming the Blues' way, however, in what is such an unwelcome distraction for Dyche and his players, as the club desperately try and prove their innocence when it comes to financial dealings. A recent report has claimed that they are "confident" about this not happening, but a fresh claim says quite the opposite.

Fresh twist regarding Everton points deduction

According to Football Insider, Everton are "likely to be hit with a new four-point deduction" for "profit and sustainability breaches", following their second hearing on the matter. They are expected to suffer the same fate as Nottingham Forest, who have also seen four points taken away from their current Premier League tally, in order for there to be consistency in the punishments.

This would "bring them back to their initial 10-point punishment", once again throwing them horribly close to the relegation zone, behind 18th-place Forest on goal difference only.

This is yet another devastating claim for Everton fans to have to deal with, with another deduction putting them in such a perilous position, at a time when relegation to the Championship could have a crippling impact on them.

It is only just over a year until the Blues leave Goodison Park for their sparkly new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, but the club's revenue will be affected so badly if Dyche's men are playing in the second tier of English football at that point.

Frankly, it is a chaotic situation for them and other clubs, with Forest also fighting for their lives after deductions of their own, and it does question why some of those higher up the Premier League table haven't faced punishments of any kind.

It is well-documented that Manchester City are facing 115 charges surrounding financial issues, but that saga seems to rumble on without anything specific happening, whereas Everton are being hit with instant punishments, potentially leading them to drop down a division.

There does seem to be an inevitability about the Merseysiders getting another four points taken away from them, and if they do, Dyche and his squad must adopt the same siege mentality that they appeared to when they were docked 10 points earlier in the campaign, trying to use it to their advantage on the pitch.

Warner likens Naseem to a young Mohammad Amir

16-year old Naseem Shah charged in without reward after he had Warner caught behind off a no-ball

Daniel Brettig in Brisbane22-Nov-2019Naseem Shah was denied a first Test wicket by the calling of a no ball after the fact, but he had consolation in a generous assessment by David Warner, who made the most of the second chance to bat through day two of the Gabba Test for Australia.”He’s quite skiddy, got a nice fluent action, but he won’t get a harder Test debut than out there and bowl at the Gabba,” Warner said of 16-year-old Naseem. “To keep coming back in, having to back up the overs, that heat. You ask any Test fast bowler who’s played here and had to keep coming back, it’s very challenging out there, and our job as batsmen is to try and keep them coming back. I think he kept his speed up quite a lot throughout the whole day. The back end he cramped up a little bit, but that’s obviously going to happen.”He charged in, and there’s a superstar there. Like when Mohammad Amir came on the scene, the first time, he was rapid and had us all in a pickle. He was a world class bowler, and if you add him to the Test lineup as well, their depth is ridiculous, and having these other young guys like Musa and Hasnain as well, who I faced in the T20s. If Waqar Younis can get a hold of them and get their lines and lengths and their engines going, they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.”Naseem Shah sends down his first delivery in international cricket•Getty ImagesThose words of encouragement were as good as it got for Pakistan on an otherwise barren day, as Warner, Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne were so supreme as to prevent the Ashes dominating Steven Smith from even getting a bat. Yasir Shah, who continued his own personal battle to try to find the right way to bowl in Australia, was blunt in assessing how the pace bowlers had used the new ball in the absence of Mohammad Abbas.”The wicket played very differently to the way it did on day one. The kind of moisture we saw wasn’t there,” he said. “We bowled badly with the new-ball. We didn’t use it well. That allowed them to get set and they played well.”We’ll have to see how tomorrow goes. There was a little bit of help later on. I didn’t get too many breakthroughs but there was quite a bit of bounce on offer. Our bowlers have used the second new-ball well. So I hope that we come back tomorrow and bowl well.”Yasir, who may have been close to losing his place for the match, explained how he had tried to experiment with pace and line to find a way past Warner. “I changed and mixed my pace around quite a bit today,” he said. “I bowled slow and also at times a bit fast. You have to do that on these pitches. Your ball can skid with the faster one and bring you a wicket. I tried my best to bowl at one spot, which I’ve done in the past and they played me well.”Today I did the same, but also with some variations and they played me well again. There wasn’t much support from the wicket. It’s just the second day of the Test. You just need to find the right spot from where you can get the ball to jump and get you wickets at short-leg and at close-in positions. And if the ball breaks even a bit off the pitch, there’s a chance of getting an edge to slip.”That’s what I tried but without much success since there wasn’t much turn off the wicket. But I’ll try to do the same tomorrow morning and hopefully it’ll work out.”

Leicestershire Foxes upset the form book when they toppled holders and in-form Worcestershire Rapids by 33 runs in a North Group encounter at Blackfinch New Road. The vaunted Rapids top order were blown away in pursuit of a target of 153 as the Foxes secured only their second win of the season.A mixture of poor batting, disciplined bowling and some sharp catching sealed victory for the Foxes and moved them off the bottom of the table as the home side were eventually dismissed for 119 in 19.2 overs. Will Davis picked up three crucial wickets in the top six and finished with 3 for 24. He was well supported by Gavin Griffiths, who took 3 for 23, and Callum Parkinson’s 2 for 21.It ended a run of three successive victories for the Rapids which had propelled them into second spot behind Lancashire. The Foxes were put in to bat on the wicket that had been used for the previous two Blast matches with Durham and Derbyshire.A stunning catch by Rapids captain Callum Ferguson brought the first breakthrough in Dillon Pennington’s second over as Mark Cosgrove lofted the paceman to mid on and Ferguson held onto a one-handed effort in full flight.Pennington then held onto a smart catch of his own, running back from short fine leg and over his shoulder to dispose of Harry Swindells off Wayne Parnell.Aaron Lilley looked in good touch and collected four boundaries from his first six deliveries as the Foxes reached 55 for 2 at the end of the Powerplay.Lilley holed out to deep mid-wicket off Ed Barnard and Harry Dearden was caught and bowled in Daryl Mitchell’s first over.Colin Ackermann and Lewis Hill took their time in rebuilding the Foxes’ innings via a partnership of 49 in seven overs. But Barnard returned to the attack to break the stand when Hill was caught at long on.The second half of the innings was clinically disposed of by Parnell and Pat Brown. Aadil Ali was bowled by Parnell, and then Callum Parkinson and Colin Ackermann were both caught by George Rhodes in Brown’s next over, the second a fine effort over his shoulder running back from cover. Parnell wrapped up the innings in clinical fashion in removing Dieter Klein and Will Davis cheaply. But Worcestershire’s big-hitting top four were blown away in the space of 12 runs. Martin Guptill reached 15, hitting Griffiths for one straight six, but in the same over he found the hands of deep mid wicket. In the next over, Riki Wessels attempted a sweep against Davis and was caught behind. Parnell miscued high into the air in the same over and presented another comfortable catch to keeper Hill.It became 39 for 4 when Callum Ferguson also perished in the mid wicket region off Parkinson. Ross Whiteley was pouched at deep backward square to give Davis a third scalp.Ben Cox and Barnard briefly threatened to haul the Rapids back into contention during a steady partnership of 31. But Cox was bowled for 30 attempting a paddle sweep against Ackermann and Barnard fell at deep mid wicket off Parkinson to all but end the match as a contest.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dominance has been secured in North America, across three CONCACAF Nations League triumphs, but the U.S. are yet to deliver at a World Cup finals and face plenty of questions regarding what constitutes success at a home Copa America in 2024.

  • WHAT BEASLEY SAID

The class of 2024 are already being billed as a “Golden Generation”, but former international DaMarcus Beasley has told of that moniker: “They still have to win something of importance, and I think that as of today, they have not done that yet. Do I think they have the capability? One-hundred percent. I'm a big fan this group, a big fan of how much talent they have. But they have yet to put it together when it comes to a big game, whether that's a friendly or whether that's a tournament. So it just remains to be seen if this is truly our Golden Generation.”

    DID YOU KNOW?

Tyler Adams, who filled the captain’s armband for the USMNT at the 2022 World Cup and is a Premier League performer at Bournemouth, has said of the “golden” tag: “I think that when you look at our team and the group of players that we have, we are a talented group of players for sure. But I would say that the biggest thing when I think about this team is: That individual success doesn't correlate directly to team success, and that's what we're working towards right now. So, it's great to have everyone playing at a top club around the world. It's probably the first time in a long time in U.S. soccer that we can be recognized at such a high level. That doesn't mean that we're going to have direct success. We're working towards that success right now.”

Sunderland could sign Pritchard’s dream striker before the deadline

It's fair to say the mood around Sunderland at the moment is sour, Hull City's narrow 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light on Friday night piling on the pressure Michael Beale is feeling in the Black Cats hot-seat already.

Barely a month into his new post on Wearside, the performance against the Tigers saw the fading Championship hopefuls fail to ever really create chances of any meaning and his managerial acumen has therefore been scrutinised.

Sunderland would leave the field of play having only accumulated 0.77 xG all match, with a first-time Fabio Carvalho effort for the visitors the difference on the night.

Beale could attempt to get fans back on side again by going all in for this transfer target, with the stuttering second-tier side now bidding for this attacker's services according to reports.

Sunderland searching for a striker

With Nazariy Rusyn substituted off in the second half last game after another timid display up top, Sunderland's main priority in this transfer window remains recruiting a brand-new, potent centre-forward.

Revealed by football journalist Adam Leventhal whilst writing for the Athletic last Wednesday, the underwhelming Black Cats have now submitted a loan offer to sign dangerous sharpshooter Kieffer Moore who has found the back of the net in the Championship before in his career with unerring regularity.

With Ipswich Town also keen to sign the current AFC Bournemouth man by submitting their own proposal to the Welshman, it will be intriguing to see who the Cherries striker picks to join for the remainder of the campaign.

Sunderland midfielder Alex Pritchard, who himself is being touted for a transfer away from the Black Cats this window, would jump for joy playing alongside Moore with his creative powers potentially supercharged as a result of the towering 6 foot 5 attacker joining.

Why Pritchard would benefit Moore

During his peak in a Sunderland strip, Pritchard was virtually unplayable as an assist king.

The now waning 30-year-old notched up a remarkable 13 assists to help his Wearside employers clinch promotion back up to the second tier during the 2021/22 campaign, the hard to contain attacking midfielder even assisting both goals in that season's Playoff Final.

Teeing up Ross Stewart for the game-clinching goal at Wembley, Pritchard will hope the Black Cats come across a new prolific striker akin to the Scotsman in Moore this January.

Bagging 47 goals playing in the second tier to date – which included a 20-goal standout season with Cardiff City at the level along the way – Beale will be doing everything in his power to try and land the Cherries striker this month to boost his side's dim promotion hopes.

Bluebirds boss at the time Mick McCarthy waxed lyrical about his imposing centre-forward after Moore scored a late-season brace back in 2021, stating that the shift he puts in every week for his side is "amazing".

With Pritchard enjoying a mini resurgence in the side and finding his A-Game again – picking up three assists last month alongside netting a screamer against Preston North End to kickstart his 2024 – Beale will pray that his diminutive creator stays put at the Stadium of Light past this transfer window.

Alex Pritchard

If Pritchard does remain, the 30-year-old midfielder will hope that Moore is the clinical striker his side have been crying out for with the ex-Huddersfield Town man potentially playing with a bigger smile on his face knowing the deadly Welshman won't waste a chance put to him.

Rashid Khan, David Warner snap Sunrisers Hyderabad's losing streak

Sunrisers Hyderabad broke Chennai Super Kings’ winning streak, and secured a vital victory after three losses on the trot, with a six-wicket win at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Super Kings were without their talismanic captain MS Dhoni, who was rested after pulling up with back spasms in their last game. And aside from a 79-run opening stand between Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis, their innings lacked oomph. Despite the slowness of the track, their 132 for 5 was sub-par and after David Warner’s rapid fifty had set the innings up, Jonny Bairstow closed the match with an unbeaten 61.With stand-in captain Suresh Raina having opted to bat, halfway through their innings Chennai would have been pleased with their progress at 80 for 1. But just 52 runs came from the next ten as the innings fizzled out. The much-hyped showdown between Vijay Shankar and Ambati Rayudu came to nought, but in truth Super Kings could have done with a little more fire in the belly at the death.ALSO READ – Ambati Rayudu v Vijay Shankar – the non-fight after the mega hypeIndeed, Warner’s response at the top of Sunrisers’ chase showed that there were quick runs to be made despite the slowness of the pitch. Warner dominated the Powerplay and left Sunrisers’ brittle middle order with a very easy job to complete. Bairstow ensured there were no slip-ups, and a struggling Sunrisers unit took down the table-toppers with 19 balls and six wickets to spare.Watson, du Plessis lay platform
With three single figure scores and a duck in his last five innings before Wednesday, Watson came into this match without much form to speak of. Neither Watson nor du Plessis looked in particularly world-beating touch when the openers crawled to just 15 from the first four overs. The pressure was on, and a wicket at that stage could have been disastrous, but the experienced pair shrugged it off with five fours and three sixes in the next five-and-a-half overs to set the innings up.Rashid finds his length (eventually)
Rashid Khan’s mid-match comeback mirrored his team’s. One sensed a big moment when he was introduced in the eighth over with both openers set, but his first ball was a half tracker that was spanked to the square-leg boundary and Rashid leaked 14 from his first two overs as he struggled to find his length and repeatedly dropped short. His third changed the complexion of the match. With du Plessis and Watson having fallen in quick succession of each other either side of the halfway mark, Rashid finally got things right in his third over, nipping out Suresh Raina and Kedar Jadhav in the space of four deliveries – both batsmen unsuccessfully reviewing their dismissals – as Super Kings slipped to 99 for 4.Jonny Bairstow and David Warner get together•BCCI

Bhuvneshwar keeps it tight
Super Kings might still have made a fist of things at the death from that position, and they may well have been looking to target Bhuvneshwar Kumar in that regard. He had an economy rate of 12.6 between overs 16 to 20 heading into this game, and was seen practicing various versions of the cutter with head coach Tom Moody on the eve of this match. The extra work clearly paid off, and Kumar gave away just 15 runs in his last two overs – and just five off the final over of the innings – to stall Super Kings’ charge. Rayudu managed to get a couple away, but Ravindra Jadeja’s innings completely failed to launch as he finished with 10 not out from 20 balls.Warner moves back into the fast lane
Since his 55-ball hundred against Royal Challengers Bangalore almost three weeks ago, Warner had scored 146 runs off 140 balls at a strike rate of 104.28 coming in to this match. Despite his two fifties in the interim, Warner hadn’t been able to set the pace as he usually does, part of the reason Sunrisers had lost their last three matches. But tonight Warner once again rocketed through a Powerplay that brought 68 runs, racking up a fourth consecutive fifty-plus score against Super Kings at a strike rate of 200. At the other end, Bairstow faced just nine balls in the first six overs, but thanks to Warner the asking rate had been brought down to just 4.64 when he fell, toe-ending an attempted loft to mid off.Bairstow takes it home
Despite Warner’s quick runs, Sunrisers still had Imran Tahir to deal with. Warner had plundered three boundaries in a row in Tahir’s first over, but the legspinner recovered to have Kane Williamson caught and bowled in his second. However, Bairstow saw Tahir off and punished the other bowlers. Karn Sharma was swatted for two clean sixes in his first over, and Bairstow added a third off him to end the game in the 17th over. Though a couple of wickets fell at the other end, Warner’s knock had broken the back of the chase and Bairstow’s sealed the result.
