Tottenham In "Talks" To Land £69m Mbappe Alternative

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly showing a strong interest in Eintrach Frankfurt star, Randal Kolo Muani, with the Frenchman being lined up as a possible replacement for contract rebel, Harry Kane.

What are the latest transfer Tottenham rumours?

While there have been somewhat audacious claims that the Lilywhites are interested in a move for Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe, journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed that it is Kolo Muani who is the "priority" target for Ange Postecoglou and co, with negotiations having already taken place regarding a potential €80m (£69m) deal.

Writing on Twitter, the transfer insider stated: "EXCL. Randal Kolo Muani to be the priority target striker for Harry Kane's replacement at #Tottenham ! Interest's huge and talks on player's side has just started. I understand this deal could happen as ENIC Group gave green light to Daniel Levy for a sale of Harry Kane.

"It's an 80M€ deal. Eintracht Frankfurt have already discusses with clubs before. Not yet from Spurs. The French striker's keen to the move. Wait&See"

harry-kane-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou

This comes amid reports that Spurs are looking to sell Kane if the Englishman does not agree to extend his contract at N17, hence the need to line up a suitable successor to the free-scoring marksman.

How many goals has Randal Kolo Muani scored?

There's likely to be some real excitement among Spurs supporters amid the club's tentative links to the aforementioned Mbappe, although questions will have to be asked as to whether the 24-year-old is actually a viable option, considering the sizeable fee that it would likely take to prise him from the Parc des Princes.

If a deal for the former Monaco ace – who has been the subject of a £260m offer from Al Hilal – is ultimately too much of a pipe dream, then Postecoglou has seemingly lined up a worthy alternative in the form of his compatriot, Kolo Muani.

PSG's Kylian Mbappe

While the latter man is arguably not of the same ilk as his international colleague – who boasts 310 goals and assists in just 260 games in all competitions – the former Nantes ace did catch the eye with 40 goal involvements in just 46 games in Germany last season, a haul not too far off that of Mbappe (51 goals and assists in 43 outings).

Lauded as "ice-cold in front of goal" by German legend, Lothar Matthaus, Kolo Muani had previously scored 23 goals and contributed 16 assists in just 83 outings for his former employers, although he truly came alive in the Bundesliga last time out.

With both men able to operate in a central role or on the flanks, they have unsurprisingly earned comparisons to French icon, Thierry Henry in recent times, with pundit Joe Cole noting Mbappe's likeness to the ex-Arsenal man, while the Bundesliga website previously said of Kolo Muani:

'Much like Kolo Muani, legendary France striker Henry started his career by impressing with his pace and trickery out wide before being repurposed as a centre-forward. Both players also clock in around the 6'2" mark and cut very similar, rangy figures.

'Kolo Muani also has a languid dribbling style and immense turn of speed that were hallmarks of Henry's game – especially at a young age. He bears similar strength on the ball and a cheekiness to his play that will leave Bundesliga defenders both in his wake and cutting frustrated figures.'

What the duo share, in particular, is there innate dribbling ability and direct nature in attack, with the Frankfurt ace ranking in the top 7% among his European peers for progressive carries and in the top 5% for successful take-ons, while Mbappe is only slightly ahead as he ranks in the top 5% and the top 1% for those same two metrics, respectively.

As such, the likeness between the pair could suggest that even if Tottenham can't get Mbappe in the door this summer, they could be set to snap up the next best thing instead…

Andre Onana Says "Yes" To Man United Transfer

Manchester United target Andre Onana has said “yes” to an Old Trafford move, with a £45m deal thought to be close, according to reports.

Are Man United signing Andre Onana?

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Onana in recent weeks and have even allegedly agreed on personal terms with the Cameroon international.

However, the club are still yet to shake hands on a transfer fee with Inter Milan for Onana to become United’s second big signing of the summer after Mason Mount.

Erik ten Hag appears to want a new goalkeeper after David de Gea’s Old Trafford contract expired at the end of June, and a reunion with Onana is seemingly on the radar.

Fabrizio Romano shared what he’s heard on a possible transfer on Thursday afternoon, claiming that the club have upped their opening offer to a total of €50m.

“Manchester United have improved their bid for André Onana. It’s now worth €50m add-ons included, around €45m plus €5m add-ons.

“Inter always asked for €60m package — but sources believe €55m could be the right number to make it happen. Talks continue.”

A further update emerged shortly after Romano’s post, and it looks as if a deal is gathering pace. According to sources close to Football Insider, Onana has said “yes” to a move to Man United, and those at Old Trafford are confident of closing a deal for the ‘keeper in the region of £45m.

Is Andre Onana good?

Ten Hag will know all about the qualities Onana could bring to Old Trafford, with the player making 145 appearances under the Dutchman at Ajax, more than any other manager during his career.

Hailed as a "superstar" by members of the media, Onana kept 19 clean sheets in 41 appearances for Inter during his first season, and was recently praised by Pep Guardiola, who described his ability on the ball as exceptional.

“Identifying the space and emptying the midfield is a special quality. Normally, teams have great keepers, but he [Onana] is exceptional with his feet.

“When you have a goalkeeper like Onana who can read perfectly where everyone is to pass to, with Calhanoglu and Barella, then the strikers hold it up and move the ball around. It is very, very difficult. It would be a tiny bit easier without this goalkeeper, but still very tough.”

A shot-stopper who is more comfortable with the ball at his feet than De Gea is of interest to Ten Hag, so Onana could be viewed as the perfect addition, with the United boss labelling the Inter man a “masterful goalkeeper” last year.

“Obviously he’s not yet back at his level from before the suspension. But that can’t be expected from him. He has to work hard to get there again and I’m convinced that he’ll succeed. We’ve all seen that he is a masterful goalkeeper.”

You’d expect that Onana would come in and become first choice in Manchester, should a transfer go through and even if De Gea decides to remain at Old Trafford, and by the looks of things, it could be a matter of time until he follows Mount through the door.

Leeds Could Ditch Bamford For ‘Stunning’ £40k-p/w Gem

Leeds United have endured a slow start to their summer, having yet to welcome a new manager into their dugout, and therefore made no signings either.

If they are truly keen on an instant return to the Premier League, they must rectify this soon.

Fortunately for fans of the club, many are aware that a deal for Daniel Farke seems all but complete, with the completion of the 49ers' takeover the only thing standing in the way of its announcement and the true start of their transfer window.

That is not to suggest that targets have not already been identified though, with one report emerging late last month linking the Whites with a move for Emmanuel Dennis.

Given the Nigeria forward struggled for game time within Nottingham Forest's bloated squad, the Yorkshire outfit could offer him an escape, to replace their own struggling striker and add some much-needed firepower to propel them out of the Championship.

Would Emmanuel Dennis improve Leeds United?

Despite having only spent two years in English football now, it feels like the 25-year-old has been around for far longer.

Having joined Watford in 2021, the marksman quickly established himself as one of the hottest prospects in the top flight with his blistering start.

Journalist Josh Bunting even noted during that time that he was an "absolutely stunning player2."

This culminated in his tally of ten goals alongside six assists for the year, which still could not prevent the Hornets from the drop.

However, it alerted many to his ability to thrive at the top level.

Whilst the Tricky Trees were unwilling to hand the £40k-per-week dynamo the necessary play time to prove this further, a move to Elland Road could help him become a hero by firing them to promotion and then helping spearhead the retention of their top-flight status.

Just 39 minutes per game last campaign fed into his underwhelming record of two goals and two assists all season, via Sofascore.

His presence would at the very least provide an upgrade on Patrick Bamford, who Farke could seek to immediately bin given his performances last term.

patrick-bamford-leeds-united

Having made 28 league appearances, the Englishman would record just four goals, missing a whopping 13 big chances with a conversion rate of just 8%. If their new boss has serious ambitions of competing at the top of their new division, they will need a far more reliable frontman than the 29-year-old who made missing sitters in huge moments an unfortunate habit.

For comparison, Dennis would miss just five big chances in that aforementioned breakout year, with a goal conversion rate of 17%, via Sofascore.

With pace, physicality, finishing prowess and youth all on his side, Farke could do much worse than immediately ditching Bamford for Dennis as his first big call as the new manager.

Man City: £34m Target Is A Bargain Gvardiol Alternative At The Etihad

Manchester City have been heavily linked with RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, but Pep Guardiola could potentially find better value going after Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres.

Manchester City transfer news – Pau Torres

According to The Athletic, Man City are very keen to sign Gvardiol from Germany, but RB Leipzig will not make it easy for them.

The German side demand a fee of €100m (£85m) for their star Croatian centre-back and have made it clear they don’t want to sell such an asset.

The report also states that Gvardiol, for now, is City’s sole focus, but Villarreal gem Pau Torres has long been a name Guardiola has kept an eye on.

The 26-year-old left-footed centre-back could later be targeted by Man City if a move for Gvardiol does not materialise, although Aston Villa and West Ham United have already registered their interest in the Spanish defender.

Will Man City sign Josko Gvardiol or Pau Torres?

City are stacked at the back, and signing Gvardiol can help make that defensive unit even stronger.

Guardiola switched up City’s defensive system this season, changing from their traditional 4-3-3 formation with overlapping full-backs to an unusual 3-2-4-1 formation with inverted full-backs.

It worked a treat, as the Citizens went on to win a historic treble and claimed their first-ever Champions League title.

What good teams like City do is they do not wait for their squad to become stale to begin their rebuild, they constantly tweak the squad to keep it fresh. Their ambition to sign one of the Bundesliga’s best defenders just weeks after completing the treble shows such intent.

Gvardiol will be expensive, with Leipzig quoting a fee of around £100m for his services, but it is not difficult to see why.

The Croatian "machine" – as hailed by The Athletic's Jordan Campbell back in December – has proved his worth in the RB Leipzig defence, winning 32 of the 59 games the centre-back has played.

If City decide their number one target is too expensive, Torres can become a bargain alternative to star at the Etihad Stadium.

He has proved to be one of the Yellow Submarines' most important players, notching 173 appearances, per Transfermarkt.

The Spanish international, who was once hailed as an "extraordinary talent" by former Villarreal player Javi Calleja, also has 23 caps to his name already and was a part of Villarreal's historic Europa League final win over the red side of Manchester in 2021.

RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Torres averaged a 7.04 rating across his 34 LaLiga games this season and helped keep 10 league clean sheets.

Villareal’s star defender would cost almost half of what Gvardiol would cost from Leipzig, with Football Espana stating that the ball-playing centre-back has a release clause of €45m (£38m), but could reportedly sell the player for as little as €40m (£34m).

That makes the 6 foot 3 titan around 60% cheaper, which is an attractive prospect in the day and age of Financial Fair Play.

Of course, Torres isn't on the same level as Gvardiol in terms of potential longevity and overall quality but he'd be a mighty fine alternative at that price.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Indeed, he is a comparable player. to the Croatian gem, per FBref's statistical model and it's easy to see why, with the Villarreal star ranking among the top 1% for progressive carries per 90 and the top 4% for progressive passes per 90, when compared to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions over the last year.

These are two key facets that Guardiola clearly looks for in a centre-back, making his fellow countryman look more and more like a steal at just £34m.

If City’s pursuit of their number one target stalls, then Torres could prove the ultimate bargain buy for Guardiola and the European champions.

Agar takes six, but NSW claim lead

Ashton Agar collected a career-best 6 for 110 as Western Australia fought back on the second day against New South Wales at the SCG.After Western Australia were dismissed for 216 on day one, New South Wales had moved along to 4 for 250 before Agar sparked a lower-order collapse on a dry pitch that has suited spinners right from the start.Nic Maddinson anchored the New South Wales’ innings with 116 and combined with Kurtis Patterson for a 126-run stand that ended when Patterson was bowled by Jason Behrendorff for 60. Behrendorff also got rid of Maddinson and finished with 4 for 83, but it was Agar who then destroyed the lower order, having dismissed both openers as well.Agar claimed Moises Henriques for 41, which began a mini-collapse of 6 for 48 as New South Wales were dismissed for 298. It meant an 82-run lead for the New South Wales, but given the state of the pitch and the turn on offer, they could still face a difficult chase in the fourth innings.By stumps Western Australia were 0 for 14 in their second innings, with openers Cameron Bancroft on 6 and Jon Wells on 8.

Herath set for captaincy debut in Zimbabwe's 100th Test

Sri Lanka are playing Zimbabwe in a Test series for the first time since 2004. Zimbabwe have never won a Test against Sri Lanka

The Preview by Varun Shetty28-Oct-2016Match factsOct 29-Nov 2, 2016, Harare

Rangana Herath versus the class of ’99

Big pictureThe last time Sri Lanka played Tests against Zimbabwe was in 2004, when Marvan Atapattu was in his first full series as captain. Kumar Sangakkara made 270 in that Bulawayo Test, his second double-hundred. Between then and now Sangakkara improved his high score twice and retired with only one less double-hundred than Don Bradman’s twelve. No Sri Lankans from that tour are on this one.Elton Chigumbura and Tinashe Panyangara made their debuts during that series and remain Zimbabwe’s only active cricketers from that tour. Unlike several of those Sri Lankans, who had storied careers, Chigumbura played only 14 Tests and Panyangara nine. The Harare Test beginning this Saturday will only be Zimbabwe’s 25th since then, and neither player will feature in it.Between 2004 and 2016, cricket in Zimbabwe has suffered because of the board’s financial trouble and a talent exodus as players and coaches sought better opportunities with other teams. Both issues fed off each other. There is a sense of optimism now, though. Heath Streak, one of Zimbabwe’s finest cricketers, is back – this time as coach – and has a plan that puts players first. With Tatenda Taibu, who is now a selector and development officer, Streak aims to create a structure that nurtures budding cricketers. And that’s whom this match will be about for Zimbabwe.Their next Test series is a return tour to Sri Lanka in June 2017, but Streak has vowed to have plenty of cricket before then, which might mean these fixtures are not make or break for players like the uncapped youngsters Tarisai Musakanda and Carl Mumba, and the returning Malcolm Waller, who hasn’t played a Test since 2014. That breathing space could facilitate a positive approach from Zimbabwe instead of being wary of embarrassment, a theme that had crept into their cricket according to Streak.Sri Lanka have a young side of their own. A combination of injuries and player management issues have deprived them of their captain Angelo Mathews, vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal, and fast bowlers Dhammika Prasad, Nuwan Pradeep and Dushmantha Chameera. However, the stand-in captain Rangana Herath was not worried, especially after the recent 3-0 whitewash of Australia.Herath, at the age of 38, was at the forefront of that victory with 28 wickets, and he was supported by fellow spinners Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan. However, Sri Lanka were able to play three spinners because Mathews provided a medium-pace option, which they will now be without. Their batting is also inexperienced, with only Dimuth Karunaratne and Upul Tharanga, a late inclusion in the squad, having played more than five away Tests.Herath’s story of leading Sri Lanka for the first time 17 years after making his debut adds to the significance of this fixture. It is also Zimbabwe’s 100th Test, and they will hope to end their winless record against Sri Lanka.Form guideZimbabwe LLLLL (completed matches, most recent first)

“We learnt a little bit from playing Australia, when they came as the No 1 Test nation and we were well down the rankings list, yet we were able to outplay them. So I don’t think you can look at an opposition in Test cricket and think it will be an easy ride. Zimbabwe have played quite a bit of good cricket recently so they’re sharp and have probably worked out their best combinations, so we’re expecting them to be a really good team.”
