Kyle Jamieson plays down expectations after 'surreal' auction night

“For me, it’s about how can I learn, how can I grow, and focusing on trying to do the job for the team at that time”

Have RCB sorted their batting out?

Kyle Jamieson had originally planned to sleep through the IPL auction, like Jimmy Neesham, but then woke up at around midnight in Christchurch to watch the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings bid furiously for him. The 6’8″ quick ended up attracting the day’s second-highest winning bid, with Mike Hesson’s Royal Challengers signing him up for INR 15 crore (USD 2 million approx).”It was pretty surreal, really, and it’s such a unique experience to watch yourself go through an auction like that in the early hours of the morning,” Jamieson said. “And I think it’s probably still trying to sink in a little bit and try to take in…Related

Six talking points from the auction (besides the millionaires)

Why teams broke the bank for Morris, Jamieson, Gowtham and Meredith

“Yeah, it was weird, there’s no textbook to say how to approach that sort of stuff – that’s probably how I’ve tried to take it. It’s such a unique experience and it’s trying to embrace the whole situation of it all as just try to, I guess, enjoy the moment.”Having watched the madness unfold, Jamieson first called up his partner and then his parents.”I actually called my partner and actually woke her up,” Jamieson said. “She was asleep, and that was a pretty cool moment. Kind of sit back and there wasn’t a whole lot of words to be spoken to be fair, but then called mum and dad – they were up as well. Did that and then turned the phone off and tried to get some sleep.”Jamieson was also pleased to share the moment with former New Zealand quick Shane Bond who incidentally will plot against Jamieson in the Mumbai Indians backroom in the forthcoming IPL.”I had a message from Shane Bond as it [auction] was going and he was sort of saying, ‘How good is this!’ I didn’t actually know what the amount of money was and how that translated to New Zealand dollars,” Jamieson said. “It was quite cool to share that moment with him and sort of ride that two or three minutes with him.”Having become the highest-paid New Zealander at an IPL auction – his senior fast-bowling partner Trent Boult had previously attracted a bid of INR 5 crore from the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017 – Jamieson is now preparing to buy coffee and beer for his team-mates and also cop some friendly banter from them.”Yeah, I think there will be a bit [of banter] from Boult, [Tim] Southee etc. So, no, it’s all part of it, and there’s a lot of banter thrown around in this group anyway and it’s such an enjoyable place to be. It’s all harmless and just good fun.”‘I accept that there will be expectations but that’s been the case the whole time I’ve played’•Getty Images

Jamieson was looking forward to linking up with a star-studded RCB contingent, which also includes Australia allrounder Glenn Maxwell who was signed for INR 14.25 crore (USD 1.95 million approx).”I think it’s such a special experience and I think [I’m] so fortunate to go to a team with superstars of the game like that,” Jamieson said. “They’ve had success for such a long period of time – those guys…Just to rub shoulders with them and try to learn and grow as a cricketer is something that I’m relishing.”Jamieson has never played competitive cricket in India previously, and the hefty price tag could invite pressure, but he downplayed it and hoped to pick up new tricks. His maiden IPL stint could potentially tune him up for the T20 World Cup, which is also slated to be held in India later this year.”To be fair, I don’t think a whole lot changes to me,” Jamieson said. “I accept that there will be expectations but that’s been the case the whole time I’ve played. When you play your first one-day game, first Test, and different series, there’s always expectation, but it’s probably more externally than it is with me. For me, it’s about how can I learn, how can I grow, and focusing on trying to do the job for the team at that time.”Shane Jurgensen, the New Zealand bowling coach, also believed Jamieson wouldn’t be distracted by the price tag and backed him to succeed in India with his pace and bounce.”He won’t change,” Jurgensen said. “He will still do his thing, his preparation, and he works hard. Like all our guys, he will do what he does. I think he will take it and he’s a very level young man – he’s worked hard on a lot of areas in his game and as I said it’s [a] reward for all he’s done.”After Jamieson bagged 6 for 7 – the best figures by a New Zealander and the fifth-best overall in T20 cricket – in the Super Smash on New Year’s Day in 2019, Hesson had tweeted: “An impressive bowler who at 6ft 8in can swing it… another one to add to the @BLACKCAPS stable.” Jamieson has since broken into New Zealand’s side across formats, most notably playing a crucial hand in their run to the WTC final, and now Hesson has added Jamieson to the RCB stable as well.

Well-prepped West Indies look to reverse poor Test record in New Zealand

Big picture

It’s been exactly nine months since we last saw the New Zealand team in whites. In March earlier this year, Kane Williamson’s side lifted the trophy in Christchurch after beating the then No. 1 Indians 2-0 in the Test series. Now, in December, as the cricketing world adapts to the new normal, Test cricket is back in New Zealand after a round of T20Is last week, against West Indies.

New Zealand vs West Indies is available in the USA on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the series

The format switch shouldn’t be too big a deal for either team playing tomorrow – only three of the players from the New Zealand T20 group are part of the Test squad, while only two West Indies players feature in both the T20I and Test sides.Just six Tests have been played – across two series, involving three teams – in the last eight months, and West Indies have been part of three of those. That’s relatively good prep in these circumstances, although several New Zealand players featured in four rounds of the domestic Plunket Shield recently and both New Zealand and West Indies have played two warm-up games on the sidelines of the T20I series. West Indies were exceptional with the bat in both games – there were three half-centuries, one century, and a double-century against the second-string New Zealand side.In July, West Indies went 1-0 up for the first time in England since 2000. In the last 25 years – since February 1995 – they haven’t won a Test match in New Zealand, losing eight and drawing four. The last time they toured New Zealand, it was Trent Boult and Neil Wagner wreaking havoc, and it might not be too different this time around, at least in terms of pace calling the shots. West Indies have their enforcers too – Shannon Gabriel, who bowled a match-winning spell in Southampton, and Kemar Roach, who toiled endlessly throughout the England series, as the main men. They also have all the preparation they could have asked for – more time in the middle than their opponents, in-form batsmen, and a well-rounded bowling attack. From the point of view of the World Test Championship, the series is a big one for New Zealand, who are currently fourth in terms of percentage points won. A series win could see them displace England at No. 3, while West Indies, who are currently third from bottom, could move up if the results go their way.

Form guide

New Zealand: WWLLL
West Indies: LLWWL

In the spotlight

Will Young, who has been the back-up batsman for a while in the New Zealand side, is all set for his Test debut. The 28-year-old was primed to be part of the Christchurch Test against Bangladesh last year in place of the injured Williamson, but the match was cancelled after the terror attack. He made 64 and 133 against the West Indies A side in the two warm-up matches in Queenstown before scoring a century in the last Plunket Shield round for Central Districts. It’s been quite a long wait for him and he would be looking to make the most of this opportunity. Will Young will make his Test debut in Hamilton•Getty Images

Internet searches for Jermaine Blackwood would have probably spiked after his 95 in the first Test against England in July. He returned to the West Indies side last year on the weight of his first-class performances, after falling out of favour in 2017, and might not have featured in the England series at all had Shimron Hetmyer and Darren Bravo not opted out. Before the pandemic curtailed the West Indies domestic season, he was the tournament’s top scorer with 768 runs in 15 innings for Jamaica. After playing for Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL, he switched to red-ball mode in no time, slamming a half-century in the second tour game in Queenstown.Kraigg Brathwaite has been unstoppable. Prior to the 246 and 47 he made in the two-warm up matches, he was good in the two Tests against England in June as well, hitting two fifties in four innings. That follows a good run of form in the past year, where he also made 468 runs in eight innings for Barbados in the domestic first-class season.

Team news

Williamson has confirmed that Young would be replacing the injured BJ Watling in the New Zealand line-up. He will open with Tom Latham, while Tom Blundell will take the wicketkeeping gloves and move down the order. Daryl Mitchell, who was named replacement for Colin de Grandhomme could also get a game here. To work around the pace-bowling quartet, New Zealand could bring in left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner – named cover for the injured Ajaz Patel – as head coach Gary Stead earlier said it would be “unusual not to play a spinner in Hamilton”.New Zealand (possible): 1 Tom Latham, 2 Will Young, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 Tom Blundell (wk), 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Kyle Jamieson, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Neil Wagner, 11 Trent BoultThe return of Bravo and Hetmyer, who had opted out of the England tour, would add some solidity in the West Indies’ batting order. The absence of Shai Hope, who was omitted after a poor run in the format, could mean Blackwood could still be part of the side after displaying good form prior to this series.West Indies (possible): 1 John Campbell, 2 Kraigg Brathwaite, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Shamarh Brooks, 5 Roston Chase, 6 Jermaine Blackwood/ Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Shane Dowrich (wk), 8 Jason Holder (capt), 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Shannon Gabriel

Pitch and Conditions

The forecast is for a cloudy morning with occasional spells of rain in Hamilton tomorrow.

Stats and trivia

  • New Zealand have a 4-0 win-loss record in their last six Tests in Hamilton: they have beaten Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh, and drawn against South Africa and England. Their last defeat here was in 2012, against South Africa.
  • Williamson needs 13 runs to become the second batsman, after Ross Taylor, to reach 1000 Test runs at Seddon Park. Williamson has an excellent record here: 987 runs at an average of 75.92. His last six Test innings here have been: 176, 43, 54, 200*, 4, 104*.
  • Tim Southee needs four wickets to become only the fourth New Zealander to take 50 Test wickets at a venue – he currently has 46 at 22.47 in Hamilton. He will join an elite club that includes Richard Hadlee (50-plus wickets in Christchurch and Wellington), Chris Martin and Daniel Vettori.
  • Darren Bravo is one of only three West Indies batsmen to score a Test double-century in New Zealand, but his form in this format has nosedived since that 218 in Dunedin seven years ago, a match that splits his career almost perfectly in half. In 28 Tests since that game, he averages 29.98; in 26 Tests till that Dunedin game, he averaged 46.67.

    Quotes

“I think it’s a format that we haven’t done well for in a long time and we’re trying to get ourselves back into the higher ends of the table where Test cricket is concerned and because of that initially we want to do that in the Test Championship but at the same time we want to be winners in Test cricket itself.”

“He’s been around the environment for some time without getting his first opportunity so I think that’s also a real positive. He’s an experienced player, has played a lot of first-class cricket and to a very high standard and he deserves that opportunity.”

Kane and the rest of the Bayern squad enjoyed a day out at the Audi garage, with all present relishing this opportunity. This is not a bad way to keep players loyal and harbour team morale but the main thing that will do that is results on the pitch. Kompany's side are top of the Bundesliga but they will need to kick on if they want to ensure they don't have a second-straight trophyless season.

      BAYERN & AUDI'S 'STRONG' PARTNERSHIP

We are united by the high standards we set ourselves and the goal of being among the leaders in our respective fields. On our journey into the electric future, the Bayern players are important ambassadors for getting many people excited about e-mobility with our all-electric models. In terms of sportiness, too, our vehicles are in no way inferior to the professional footballers.”

Michael Diederich, FC Bayern deputy CEO, added: “Whether as a team on the pitch or beyond the pitch in our society, we can only make a difference together. Sustainability is important to us as FC Bayern. And as a club with our millions of fans around the world, we also want to set a positive example in terms of electromobility. Leeds and 49ers prepared to buy 27 y/o defender who has just won promotion

A new transfer target has reportedly emerged for Leeds United and the 49ers Enterprises, with the club prepared to buy a 27-year-old defender this summer.

    Leeds transfer news

The Whites and the 49ers Enterprises have been linked with a lot of players of late, with Fulham attacker Bobby De Cordova-Reid one individual who has emerged as a target who could come in and rival Joel Piroe. He scored six goals in 17 Premier League starts in 2023/24 and a move is being eyed as he looks to be available for free in the coming weeks.

Failing to earn promotion from the Championship could see Leeds explore the loan market, and Chelsea youngster Alfie Gilchrist has also been backed to complete a move to Elland Road in the near future. The 20-year-old made 11 league appearances this season, scoring his first-ever senior goal for the Blues, too, in what was a special moment for him.

There is the threat that the Whites could lose star youngster Archie Gray, of whom so much is expected of in the future, and West Ham utility man Ben Johnson could soon be lined up to come in for him at right-back, should the teenager move on to pastures new in the summer window.

The 24-year-old will almost certainly head elsewhere this summer, leaving West Ham on a free transfer in the process, and he could be an astute signing who already has Premier League experience under his belt. Daniel Farke would no doubt prefer that Gray stays put instead, though.

Leeds and the 49ers prepared to buy 27-year-old defender

According to Sportbladet [via MOT Leeds News], Leeds and 49ers are interested in signing St. Pauli defender Eric Smith this summer, locking horns with West Brom in the process.

The report states that the Whites are "prepared to buy Smith" ahead of next season, following an impressive campaign that saw his side promoted to the Bundesliga.

Smith may admittedly be a relative unknown to Leeds, considering he has been playing in the second tier of German football, but there is a lot to appreciate about him as a player.

The 27-year-old started 26 Bundesliga.2 games in 2023/24, proving to be a key figure at the heart of St. Pauli's defence, averaging 2.1 clearances and 1.8 aerial duel wins per game in the competition in the process. He even chipped in with one goal and three assists for good measure.

Smith also showcased his versatility by featuring twice in midfield for his current club, and being able to thrive in a number of positions is something that could appeal so much to Farke, as he looks to get as much depth and quality in his Leeds squad ahead of their return to the Premier League in August.

At 27, the Swede could also be arriving at Elland Road right in his peak years with his Transfermarkt valuation of €4m (£3.4m) at a career-high currently, and that may only increase further in years to come.

Arsenal hold fresh agent talks as they eye £34 million Sesko alternative

Arsenal have held fresh talks with the representatives of a £34 million striker, as they eye up an alternative to heavily-linked RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko.

Goalscoring strikers of the 21-year-old's ilk usually come at an extortionate premium, with Arsenal-linked forwards Victor Osimhen (£113 million) and Viktor Gyokeres (£86 million) both commanding marquee price tags.

Sesko could leave Leipzig for a much cheaper fee, and with Arsenal looking to bolster other areas of Mikel Arteta's team, the 6ft 5 centre-forward could come as an excellent solution.

"He wants to take some time to decide if he will stay at RB Leipzig and sign a new contract, or leave to try a new experience," said Fabrizio Romano in an update on Sesko's future to the Here We Go podcast (via football.london).

“The first step has to be to inform RB Leipzig of his future at the club. Leipzig presented an important contract to Sesko to be the star of the squad with an improved salary and big money.

"He has to decide whether he wants to be the superstar of Leipzig for one more season or to leave in 2025. He has already said no to two big proposals for €30 million (£26 million) per season salary in Saudi Arabia, so he was not attracted by the possibility.

“He has three proposals from the Premier League – Manchester United, Chelsea & Arsenal – these three clubs have already approached Sesko and presented their project. They want him so now it's basically on the player.”

Depending on the developments surrounding Sesko, with the player having many different offers, Arsenal will need to have alternative options. One of them, according to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, is Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee.

Arsenal hold fresh agent talks as they eye Zirkzee

TBR claim that Arsenal have held fresh talks with the agents of Zirkzee recently, and while separate reports indicate that AC Milan are in pole position to sign the Dutchman (Fabrizio Romano), it is never done until contracts are officially signed.

    Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

The striker's contract includes a £34 million release clause, which is even less than Sesko's, so this could be one to watch if Arsenal decide to try and hijack Milan's proposed move.

With the summer transfer window approaching, Newcastle United have reportedly emerged as unexpected candidates to sign a player who has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League for some time now.

    Newcastle transfer news

There's no doubt that the Magpies need reinforcements. Eddie Howe's injury list has continued to grow this season, leaving him scrambling for options, and he will already be without both Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman at the start of the next campaign. Links to Rayan Ait-Nouri, Dean Huijsen and Max Kilman suggest that PIF are ready to add depth to Newcastle's backline, but only time will tell whether that proves to be successful.

Newcastle now targeting "incredible" Champions League winner for Howe

The Magpies have turned their attention towards the summer…

As things stand, Howe has just Fabian Schar to call on when it comes to natural centre-backs, with left-back Dan Burn forced to move over and fill in for his injured colleagues. It is a situation that those at St James' Park will be desperate to avoid next season, but that doesn't mean other positions aren't being looked at ahead of the summer.

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle have now emerged as surprise candidates to sign Manu Kone ahead of the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United this summer. The Borussia Monchengladbach defensive midfielder was linked with a move to Anfield almost all of last summer and has since been linked with Old Trafford, but it looks as though it could yet be the Magpies who land his signature.

The fact that Joelinton has signed a new contract may have suggested that Newcastle were sticking with what they've got in midfield, but reports have since indicated otherwise, with PIF seemingly strengthening rather than replacing stars in Howe's squad in the coming months. Kone would be an ideal fit too, and would more than play a part in helping to drag Newcastle back into European contention next season.

"Fantastic" Kone would be perfect Guimaraes partner

If Newcastle want to return to the Champions League sooner rather than later, then building around a player of Bruno Guimaraes' calibre will be the key. The Brazilian has been one of the few bright sparks in the current campaign, but needs help in the middle of the park. And that's where Kone would come in.

The Frenchman, still just 22-years-old, has impressed many in the Bundesliga to more than earn links to top Premier League clubs. Among those impressed has been Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig.

It remains to be seen just how much Gladbach will demand for their midfielder this summer, but after just over a year of rumours regarding his exit, Kone could finally be on the move.
