Man Utd Could Find Chicharito 2.0 in £18m Dynamo

Manchester United are reportedly showing interest in Feyenoord starlet, Santiago Gimenez, as Erik ten Hag seeks to strengthen his centre-forward ranks this summer.

What's the latest on Gimenez to Man United?

According to The Mirror, the Red Devils were among a host of Premier League clubs who sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action during the recent Eredivisie clash with Ajax, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton and Hove Albion also showing an interest in his services.

The Mexican international – who only arrived in the Netherlands last summer – is said to be valued at as little as £18m if he is to be sold this summer, with that no doubt an attractive option as far as the Old Trafford outfit are concerned.

While United have been heavily linked with a move for England skipper, Harry Kane ahead of next season, a second striking addition, such as Gimenez, can not be ruled, particularly amid the doubts over Anthony Martial's future and with Wout Weghorst only on a temporary deal at the club.

Would Gimenez be a good signing for Man United?

Ten Hag's need for a more ruthless presence in attack was only heightened following the 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday, with the hosts having been rather wasteful despite eventually sealing the win, notably recording 21 attempts on goal in the first-half alone – the most of any team in the league this season.

Turning to a figure like Gimenez could well help to ease those goalscoring woes, with the Argentina-born marksman having enjoyed a "very impressive" start to life in Rotterdam, as per talent scout Jacek Kulig, after scoring 22 goals in all competitions this season.

The former Cruz Azul ace – who has nine league goals to his name this term – may not be expected to instantly hit the ground running as a starting option at the Theatre of Dreams, although he could well help to provide strong competition to a more marquee arrival, such as Kane.

The hope would be that the 6 foot sensation could follow in the footsteps of another Mexican star who shone in Manchester, with Javier Hernandez also proving himself a truly menacing impact player during his time at the club.

Javier Hernandez in action for Manchester United

While young 'Chicharito' was something of an unknown quantity after signing for Sir Alex Ferguson's side in 2010 – joining from Guadalajara on a reported £6m deal – he quickly became an undoubted fan favourite, having scored 13 league goals in his debut campaign at the club.

That respectable tally had come despite the 5 foot 9 ace making just 15 starts, having quickly established himself as something of a 'super-sub' due to his ability to provide that match-winning moment off the bench.

Despite never truly establishing himself as the leading man in attack, Hernandez was a perfect alternative to the likes of Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Robin van Persie, notably scoring ten league goals in each of the next two seasons as a marker of his clinical finishing prowess – albeit while netting just four top-flight goals in his final campaign at the club in 2013/14.

The hope would be that young Gimenez could emulate or even better his compatriot if he is to join Ten Hag's project this summer, taking on the Hernandez mantle of being a perhaps lesser-known option who can go on to surprise the Old Trafford crowd.

Man United Sanction Move for £200k-p/w Star This Summer

Manchester United CEO Richard Arnold has sanctioned a potential deal for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, according to The Daily Star.

What’s the latest transfer news on Kane and Manchester United?

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag have made a new forward one of their transfer priorities this summer and are seemingly interested in a move for England’s all-time record goalscorer.

Reports earlier this month claimed that United have already made contact with Kane’s camp through a third party and have been encouraged by the response. They believe they will sign the 29-year-old at the end of the current campaign, should Spurs finish outside the top four in the Premier League. A further transfer update has now emerged regarding the £200,000-a-week forward and a potential move to Old Trafford.

The Daily Star’s chief sports writer Jeremy Cross stated that Ten Hag has made Kane his No.1 priority this summer and that Arnold has sanctioned a deal. The club now look set to rival Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Chelsea in a possible £80m transfer, with Ten Hag believing that the forward would turn United into genuine title contenders next season.

Should Kane move to Old Trafford?

United appear to have lacked an out-and-out world-class striker this season, with Antony Martial suffering numerous injury issues and Wout Weghorst only arriving on loan until the end of the season back in January and is yet to score in the league.

Therefore, going after a player like Kane appears to be a wise move by Ten Hag and the club, with the Spurs star guaranteeing goals in recent seasons. He has scored 17 Premier League goals or more in each of his last nine campaigns and currently stands on 204 top-flight goals in 310 appearances.

He has been heavily praised over the years as a result, with former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte recently describing him as ‘world-class’. Kane also seemingly has one eye on breaking Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record, something he could continue to look to achieve at Old Trafford.

You’d expect that he would be guaranteed chances in Ten Hag’s side as well, especially with Bruno Fernandes in behind, with the Portuguese playmaker creating 71 chances so far this season. Kane has also had more shots on target than any other Premier League player during the current campaign, scoring 21 times, so it’s easy to see why Ten Hag thinks he could take United to the next level.

Newcastle: Cole 2.0 with Alex Scott

Newcastle United no doubt have a lot to play for in the remainder of the campaign with Champions League qualification still very much in their grasp, although the Magpies hierarchy are likely to be already plotting ways to strengthen this summer, ahead of another top-four push next season.

For all the desire for immediate success, the recent capture of 22-year-old, Anthony Gordon on a £45m deal from Everton appears to showcase that manager Eddie Howe is also looking to invest for the future, with the Englishman keen to bolster his ranks with promising young talent.

Recent reports have suggested that the Tynesiders could well be about to continue that trend by snapping up another exciting gem, with The Mirror reporting at the end of last month that the northeast side are keeping tabs on Bristol City starlet, Alex Scott.

The report outlined that the 19-year-old playmaker is attracting interest from across the Premier League as a result of his standout displays in the second tier of late, with the St James’ Park outfit ready to ‘enter the race’ to sign the teenager as he ‘fits the profile’ of the type of player that Howe and co are targeting.

The up-and-coming star – who has been branded the ‘Guernsey Grealish’ due to his likeness to the Manchester City man – was previously the subject of interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January, albeit with the Robins’ £25m asking price seemingly putting paid to the move.

That collapse has opened the door for Newcastle to pounce this summer, with the hope being that the youngster can emulate the success of another man to have traded Bristol for the northeast – Andy Cole.

Who could be Newcastle’s next Andy Cole?

Having been plucked from Aston Gate on a £1.75m deal back in March 1993 – after beginning his career on the books at Arsenal – Cole went on to prove an instant hit during his relatively brief stint on Tyneside.

The prolific Englishman set the tone for what was to follow after scoring on debut in a 4-0 win over Notts County, before going on to bag 12 goals in total in the tail end of the 1992/93 campaign to help fire the club back into the top-flight.

That step up was ultimately no problem for the Nottingham-born hotshot as he rifled home 41 goals in all competitions in his first – and only – full season at St James’ Park, with his haul of 34 Premier League goals still the joint-highest tally in a single campaign in the competition’s history – alongside Alan Shearer.

That fine form – which saw the ruthless marksman score nine league goals at the start of the 1994/95 season – subsequently led to Cole being snapped up by rivals Manchester United in January 1995, going on to win a plethora of major honours during his glittering stint at Old Trafford.

Although young Scott operates in a slightly deeper role to that of the now-retired ace, the belief will be that he can prove just as influential if a deal can be agreed in the coming months, with the England U20 international already having shown his class in the Championship this season.

The highly-coveted asset has provided a respectable tally of four assists in his 34 league starts from his playmaking, midfield berth this season, while also showcasing his ability to put in the hard yards defensively as he has averaged 2.2 tackles per game in that time.

It was the teen’s display in the recent FA Cup defeat at home to Man City that truly announced himself to a wider audience, however, having been branded a “top, top talent” by his idol Jack Grealish as a result of his breathtaking performance.

Scott truly ‘didn’t look out of place’ against Pep Guardiola’s heavyweight outfit – as per Bristol Live’s Richard Forrester – having completed five of his six attempted dribbles on the night, while also recording 11 total duels after showing no signs of nerves against such elite opposition.

That remarkable outing has showcased that, like Cole, the Bristol sensation should be able to comfortably make the step up to the top tier if he is to join Howe’s side in the near future.

Spurs could repeat Dembele masterclass by signing Fulham gem

Tottenham Hotspur sporting director Fabio Paratici will undoubtedly already be plotting to strengthen the current squad this summer, with the Lilywhites still arguably in need of fresh faces if they are to truly contend for major honours moving forward.

A particular problem for the north London outfit has been the continued reliance on talisman Harry Kane, with the England skipper the only player to reach double figures (20) for goals this season in all competitions, with the likes of Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski only scoring two goals apiece.

With Antonio Conte’s side seemingly crying out for further firepower to help bolster the forward line, recent reports have suggested that the club could be targetting a move for Fulham star, Manor Solomon.

What’s the latest on Manor Solomon to Spurs?

According to major Israeli outlet Y Net, both Spurs and bitter rivals Arsenal are currently ‘monitoring’ the 23-year-old’s development at Craven Cottage, with the Israeli international having joined the newly-promoted side on loan last summer from Shakhtar Donetsk, amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The report does suggest that the player himself is keen on a permanent stay with Marco Silva’s side at the end of the season, although the interest from the north London duo could prove a spanner in the works for the Cottagers’ hopes of striking a deal.

Could Solomon be Tottenham’s next Mousa Dembele?

Those back at N17 will no doubt remember a previous figure who arrived at the club after starring for Fulham in the form of midfield magician, Mousa Dembele, with the silky Belgian having signed for Spurs back in the summer of 2012, after two years in west London.

The now-retired colossus would go on to emerge as a leading figure for Tottenham over the next few years, eventually going on to score ten goals and provide 12 assists in 249 games in all competitions, prior to his exit in 2019.

Despite perhaps not always receiving wider acclaim for his quality, Dembele was certainly loved by those within the club, having notably been described as a “genius” by former boss Mauricio Pochettino back in 2017.

The playmaker’s ex-teammates also remain hugely complementary about his unique gifts, with current Newcastle United man Kieran Trippier having stated earlier this month:

“He’s an absolute magician. Just absolutely frightening, with the ball, without the ball. He had everything. He had absolutely everything.”

Having proven a particularly astute signing after arriving at the club just over a decade ago, the hope will be that chairman Daniel Levy can replicate that masterclass by bringing Solomon to the club this summer, with the 5 foot 7 ace having showcased his quality in recent weeks.

Despite having missed much of the campaign through injury, the 31-cap speedster – who is valued at around €12.5m (£11m), according to Football Transfers – has since scored three goals in his last three league games, including a stunning, curling effort in the recent draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That impressive hot streak has seen the wide man lauded as a “game-changer” by The Athletic’s Peter Rutzler, with Solomon also previously demonstrating his attacking quality after providing 31 goals and assists in 106 games for his parent club.

Although Paratici may wish to see more from the impressive dynamo before he opts to make a move, on recent evidence the winger could go on be the next surprise star for the club, much like Dembele proved to be.

Journalist backs Newcastle to make midfield signings

Journalist Damian Spellman believes Newcastle United have to improve their midfield department this summer.

The Lowdown: A lack of depth may be concerning

The Magpies appear to be in something of a slump as they’ve drawn five out of their last six games in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, their sole win in that run came against Fulham, largely thanks to Aleksandar Mitrovic double-kicking his penalty before Alexander Isak headed in an added-time winner.

This run of form has also come at a worrying time for Eddie Howe, as his squad is being stretched, with Bruno Guimaraes out for another game, Jonjo Shelvey having left for Nottingham Forest and Joe Willock going off against Bournemouth with a hamstring injury.

It was reported in January that Newcastle’s main priority during the transfer window was to improve the centre of midfield, but despite losing Shelvey, that didn’t end up happening, which has left the Magpies short in the middle of the pitch.

The Latest: Newcastle will look to improve in the summer

Newcastle will have aspirations of playing European football next season and that would require a deeper squad – something Spellman expects them to address this summer as he spoke on the Everything is Black and White podcast.

He said: “There’s no secret that Eddie Howe didn’t want to let Jonjo Shelvey leave, and I suspect when he did okay it, he thought they might get somebody in – and ultimately they didn’t.

“I think it’s glaringly obvious that that is one of the departments in which they need to strengthen and I think it will be somewhere they’ll invest in the summer – and we all know they’ve looked at people for that position or that area of the pitch.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: PIF to go big next transfer window

While not spending heavily in January will likely put Newcastle in a healthier spot to spend more freely in the summer, if it ends up costing them either the top four or a chance to lift the Carabao Cup, that decision will likely be criticised.

Howe made it very clear during January that Newcastle didn’t want to spend money for the sake of it as they hoped to avoid handcuffing themselves financially for future windows, so it’s a very sensible approach taken by the club’s owners.

However, if Newcastle don’t make the top four, the calibre of players they could attract could drop significantly, so it’s a risky strategy and one that may well come back to bite them if they keep picking up injuries and fail to capitalise on a bizarre season where several of the usual suspects have been left behind in the Champions League race.

Leeds can find Aaronson upgrade in Zaniolo

Leeds United have been tipped to seal a late move for Roma midfielder, Nicolo Zaniolo, with the Italy international facing an uncertain future at the Stadio Olimpico.

What’s the word?

Reports earlier today claimed that Whites sporting director Victor Orta had made a loan-to-buy offer for the 23-year-old, with the towering playmaker having also been linked with a £31m switch to fellow Premier League side Bournemouth in recent times.

According to transfer insider Dean Jones – speaking to GIVEMESPORT – the Elland Road outfit could well capitalise on the player’s apparent desire to leave his current side, by making a concrete move before the deadline.

The respected journalist stated: Leeds could take advantage of a tricky situation but they only wanted a loan and other clubs, including some in Italy, are having a look. We know Zaniolo is stuck between a rock and a hard place because he needs to leave Roma.”

Aaronson upgrade

The addition of Zaniolo could well allow Orta and Jesse Marsch the chance to secure an upgrade on summer signing Brenden Aaronson, with the USA international having been unable to truly make his mark in the playmaking berth so far this season.

Although the 22-year-old’s relentless work ethic has been commendable – as he notably ranks in the top 4% among his European peers for blocks made – he has been unable to offer a greater end product to go with it, having scored just once and laid on only two assists in 22 games in all competitions this season.

For a player that is seemingly meant to be the creative hub of the side, such a limp return is no doubt something of a problem for the Yorkshire outfit, hence the possible desire to provide quality competition in the form of the Roma maestro.

The latter man – who has been described as “such a special player” by journalist Carlo Garganese in the past – has already provided five goal involvements in 17 outings in all competitions, despite a spell out with injury, after previously registering eight goals and nine assists under Jose Mourinho last season.

That difference in attacking threat between the pair is also illustrated by the fact that Zaniolo ranks in the top 4% for total shots and the top 11% for progressive passes received, while Aaronson ranks in just the bottom 14% and the bottom 17% for the same two metrics, respectively.

While Marsch may be inclined to stick by his compatriot – who cost in the region of £24.7m back in May – the evidence would suggest that it is Zaniolo whom the former RB Leipzig coach could really build his team around.

Newcastle: Diaby deal unlikely in January

Newcastle United are very unlikely to sign winger Moussa Diaby in the January transfer window with his price set to drop in the summer, according to Ben Jacobs.

The Lowdown: Diaby interest

Newcastle have long admired Diaby with the Bayer Leverkusen winger one of the foremost linked players to the Premier League side following their Saudi-backed takeover.

The Frenchman’s return of 17 goals and 14 assists last season in Germany caught the eye of the Magpies but such was his importance to the Bundesliga outfit, they were priced out of a move.

L’Equipe reported in the summer that a €100m (£83m) price tag was slapped on the 23-year-old as they warned off interest in their star man.

The Latest: The move to be revived?

Newcastle still retain their interest in Diaby but Jacobs has revealed a move in January isn’t on the cards.

Speaking on Steve Wraith’s YouTube channel, Jacobs explained that deal does however have a good chance in the summer.

(39:33) “Newcastle were only going to entertain Diaby if that price became cut price, which was something in the region of £40m-£45m, and then add ons on top.”

“Now the price being quoted as €100m, which is what about £87m, far too high for anybody to consider.”

“Then in the summer we’ll see whether that price drops, and it might even get close to a 50% reduction on that closed price €50m (£45m), maybe with some add ons on top might be their kind of starting point in the summer.”

“There’s no common sense for any club to move in the market for Diaby in January at the moment unless there is an intimation at the Leverkusen end that the price is going to drop significantly,” Jacobs said.

The Verdict: Get him in

Despite Eddie Howe’s selection of late favouring more work-man like players with Miguel Almiron and Joelinton both preferred over Allan Saint-Maximin on the wing, means a mentality and tactical shift back to a more explosive forward would have to be on the cards to make Diaby’s move work.

The winger, who has been tipped as Newcastle’s ‘dream signing’, has bagged FBref), shows just dangerous he is when he gets in and around the goal.

He could be a steal at a price of £45m and at only 23 he’d be a key player to build their attack around at St James’ Park, it’s certainly a deal to keep an eye on.

Mark Goldbridge slams Man United hierarchy

YouTube presenter Mark Goldbridge has slammed the Manchester United hierarchy over their inability to complete transfers quickly enough.

What’s the word?

United have been strongly linked with a loan move for Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix, with David Ornstein revealing that the asking price of a total of around €21m (£18.6m) for a six-month loan is currently too high.

Goldbridge has criticised the United board as a result, claiming that they need to act quickly in the interests of strengthening their team, rather than wasting weeks of the transfer window trying to negotiate a lower fee.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he laid into the club, claiming that their misplaced priorities will only stall Erik ten Hag’s progress at Old Trafford, as well as potentially jeopardising their performances in their cup fixtures in January.

He said: “What bunch of prats sits there and goes, ‘Eric, we might get you Joao Felix, but we’re confident we can bring the price tag down in three weeks by about €5m’? And if I was Erik ten Hag, I’d be going, ‘What are you talking about?’.

“‘Alright, it’s a little bit expensive, but you’re not going to get it down by €15m, you’re gonna get it down by five. You’re telling me that €5m is that important to you that you want me to go and play Carabao Cup knockout games, FA Cup knockout games and big Premier League points games without a forward so that you can save €5m?

“‘You’ll make that in gate receipts from the semi-finals if I beat Charlton in the Carabao Cup’.

“We’re not buying him for €100m and you’re trying to get it down to €60m, you’re trying to get a €15m loan fee down to about €10m.”

United to miss another signing?

With the long-linked Cody Gakpo moving to Liverpool after United failed to act quickly enough, the club could be set to lose out again if they spend too long negotiating with Atletico Madrid over the loan fee.

Arsenal are also interested in Felix, and if United stall over the fee, they may lose out on a target in a priority position if he moves to north London instead.

Although the reported loan fee is high, if it helps United achieve success in the cups and secures a top-four finish, it will pay for itself. Delaying a potential deal until the end of the month to try and save a small amount of the fee could cost the team on the pitch.

Southampton must surely recall Nathan Tella

Just like their fellow Premier League clubs, Southampton have been patiently awaiting the end of this year’s World Cup.

Having decided to call time on Ralph Hasenhuttl’s tenure at St Mary’s in early November, they handed Nathan Jones the six-week break to enforce his will upon this struggling group. His inherited team sitstwo points adrift from safety, having won just threetimes in 15 league games this season.

The Saints have suffered from a lack of proficiency in the final third during the current campaign, with just13goals scored so far piling on the misery. It is a worrying sign for the new boss, who must reignite a misfiring front line if he hopes to secure top-flight survival.

His first port of call must be to revive the wingers, who have offered next to nothing since the season began.

Hasenhuttl persisted with the likes of Mohamed Elyounoussi, Moussa Djenepo, Theo Walcott and Stuart Armstrong even over the young starlet Sam Edozie, despite the terrible form they all have shown.

The Norwegian in particular has disappointed ever since hisbig-money moveto Southampton back in 2018.It is a searing indictment of his time on the south coast that he has only really found his form at Celtic during his loan spells away from St Mary’s.

In justone league campaign in Scotland (eight goals, four assists in 2020/21), Elyounoussi almost matched the tally ofgoal contributions(13) he has accumulated in68games in all competitions for Southampton. Even then he was challenged for his often ‘one-dimensional’ playing style, as Ben Wells cited from some Celtic supporters.

This season has been more of the same, with the£60k-per-week dud having yet to scorein all competitions for the Saints in 16 outings.

What makes this even more frustrating is the starring role that Nathan Tella currently is playing in Burnley’s promotion push, having joined them on loan in the summer.

The Clarets currently sit three pointsclear at the top of the Championship, with the 23-year-old having featured heavily for Vincent Kompany’s side.

Across his 20 games in the league, Tella already boasts seven goals and one assist. This contribution is more than all the talliesof the aforementioned four Southampton wingers combined.

The tricky wide man was handed limited game-time for the Saints last season, yet still recordedfour goal contributions across his 18appearances. Surely, he is a better option than those who currently reside at St Mary’s.

When Tella first began breaking into the first team in spring 2021, Owen Hargreaves was full of praise for the youngster, claiming: “He has been good on the ball, he has been a handful for Sheffield United. He fancies himself with his pace and pushes it beyond the defenders.

“He’s technically good in these areas and tight areas, keeping the ball and I think he’s been the best player on the pitch.”

Having already proven himself to be better than what Jones currently has at his disposal, surely it is time to recall Tella as someone who could make the difference in Southampton’s survival bid.
