Mitchell Starc: Lack of cricket in last five months costing Australia

Mitchell Starc believes Australia’s off-the-pace showings in their opening two T20 internationals against England are the result of a lack of cricket after seven months of coronavirus-induced torpor. The Southampton pitch turned out to be more lively than the captain Aaron Finch had expected when he opted to bat first. After failing to finish off their opening match on Friday to raise familiar questions about the middle-order batting, the tourists chose to avoid chasing in the second fixture yesterday only to be blown off course by a fiery England attack in the opening overs. From there, the Australians were always going to struggle to put up a winning total, leaving Jos Buttler to do what Finch and David Warner had failed to in the first game by batting through the innings to see the hosts home to a series victory with one match to play on Tuesday.”It’s not an excuse but coming off five months without cricket doesn’t help,” Starc said. “You can’t really simulate international matches by having nets or a centre-wicket practice. And T20 cricket is such a short game – those little moments have really cost us in the long run. We’ve been a little bit off where we want to be and I think that comes from a little bit of game time.”Hopefully now we can fix that for the third game and then move on to the one-dayers, and show now [that] we’ve had that game time we can get those plans right and execute a bit better than we have those first two T20s. Like in the first game when we had it in control and [had] a little slip with the bat, and playing England you aren’t going to get that back. There was still plenty of good stuff with bat and ball. I think we were just that little bit off, which I think you get from playing cricket.”Starc, who has bowled with pace if not perfect rhythm in the two games thus far, said that he had personally witnessed incremental improvement over the two outings, and expected the trend to be maintained throughout the brief tour.”My plans have been pretty simple,” he said. “I’ve felt that execution was slightly off [in] game one, felt pretty good today. [There were] probably only one or two balls that I didn’t execute the way I wanted to. So it hasn’t taken a whole heap. I’ve been bowling for three and a half – close to four months now – anyway. It’s just that match intensity. International cricket is always going to be a step up from having centre wickets, like we have done for the last week and the net sessions that were all we had back home, in small groups.Moeen Ali gives Jos Buttler a handshake after his six sealed victory•AFP

“So slightly different to England, who have played six [five] T20Is already in the last couple of months. We’re here to play international cricket and win, but I think that’s where we can have a look and say we were slightly off in some key moments. Hopefully, now we’ve got the two games we can look at, readjust our plans and hopefully fix our execution in the third game and one-day series as well.”Assessing Buttler’s impact on the game, in contrast to how Finch and Warner were unable to bat through the innings in the first match, Starc said the England opener had done his job.”In terms of structuring an innings, our batters are going to have their own plans and play their own way,” he said. “I don’t think we have too many that bat exactly like Jos, he’s someone who moves around the crease a lot, something that Smithy [Steven Smith] does I guess. But in terms of someone being destructive in the powerplay and getting your team through to the end, that’s something how you want your openers to do.”He is a clean striker of the ball and he certainly got them home today with the bat. When you get someone striking them the way he has for the last two games, it is so powerful in T20 because it’s such a short format. It is something we are going to have to plan for now for the third game. We need to chat as a group and be ready to go for the one-dayers as well.”Having fielded the same side in the first two games, Starc said that the selectors needed to be mindful of tinkering too much with the team so close to a T20 World Cup, slated for India a little over a year from now. Mitchell Marsh, Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan Lyon are among the players waiting in the wings.”It’s not about handing out games – if the selectors think they’re going to help us win a game of cricket then I think that’s the way to go,” Starc said. “But we’ve got two World Cups in the next two years. It’s a chance to [play the best side] – there’s not a heap of T20 cricket before the World Cup, so you can’t waste games whether it’s the end of the series or not. So I guess on the longer picture, we’ve just had five months of no cricket, so I think everyone is relishing the chance to play and improve. And we can certainly improve on those first two games.”

IPL 2020: Emirates Cricket Board waits for India government nod to 'ink the final deal' with BCCI

The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) is waiting for the formal nod from the Indian government to “ink the final deal” with the BCCI, after receiving an official letter of intent from the Indian board for hosting the 2020 edition of the IPL.”Should get it [the permission],” as the IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel told ESPNcricinfo recently, the two boards have “fully mobilised and have instigated discussions with the relevant authorities, including their respective internal working-committees” to host the tournament between September 19 and November 10, Mubashshir Usmani, ECB secretary-general, said in a statement on Monday.”There are many factors which influence the operations and logistics of hosting what is the world’s most exciting, popular and lucrative [cricket] tournament. This is a massive movement of people and equipment and we now need to bring in the experts to discuss all aspects of UAE hosting the IPL,” Usmani said. “This includes the Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah Sports Councils, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah Tourism Bodies and the respective Government entities – such as the Police Forces and the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention, all who have had strong, proven experience in such activities and we will work together to ascertain the best practices to support and deliver on a successful edition.”ALSO READ: IPL 2020: ‘Will be slightly easier to monitor ACU activity in the UAE,’ says Ajit SinghIt’s not a completely new experience for the ECB, as the first 20 games of the 2014 edition were held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah because of the Indian general elections. This time, of course, the presence of Covid-19 has added a different dimension to the organisation.”Firstly, we are extremely pleased with how the UAE government responded to the virus, which was as early as February and we continue to see encouraging numbers across the country – in decreasing cases and increasing recoveries,” Usmani said. “Secondly, we will fully support any requirements stipulated by the relevant Health Authorities in regards to Covid-19 safety measures and management.”We have a sound, solid understanding of what is required, and to whom we need to consult and engage with from this early stage through to close of the tournament. UAE boasts some of the best practice facilities and stadia in the world across three-Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah), which we are confident will be more than adequate to support the eight-team tournament.”

Teen sensation Yamal is on the 30-man shortlist pieced together by France Football that will see the title of best player on the planet handed out alongside a prestigious Golden Ball. He is not considered to be a leading contender to land that prize just yet.

For now, Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior tops the Ballon d’Or betting – after helping the Blancos to La Liga and Champions League crowns last season. His club colleague, England international Jude Bellingham, is another leading contender.

Ex-England and Barca striker Lineker is, however, of the opinion that Yamal’s international colleague Rodri – who remains a talismanic presence for Premier League champions Manchester City – would be the most deserving recipient, telling The Rest Is Football podcast when making his predictions: “I think Rodri deserves it. Obviously, they didn’t win the Champions League at City but they did win the Premier League and then the Euros with Spain where he was very much their leader.

“Young player of the year I’ve got a feeling will be Lamine Yamal. He could win that for the next five years!”

Roston Chase: 'Won't be happy if I don't get at least one century'

West Indies allrounder sets out personal aim for successful tour of England

Alan Gardner20-Jun-2020Roston Chase has played as much of a part as any of his team-mates in West Indies’ recent improvements as a Test side. He has scored five hundreds since his debut in 2016, including a six-hour rearguard against India in his second Test, and another in his last encounter with England. Two Tests before that, his eight-wicket haul condemned England to defeat in Barbados and set Jason Holder’s side on their way to reclaiming the Wisden Trophy.Chase also did his bit when West Indies won at Headingley in 2017, although that was an underwhelming tour generally as he averaged 13.33 with the bat. Perhaps that is why he has set his sights on scoring “at least one century” this time around. “Once you do well in England, I think your stock as a cricketer goes up on the international scene,” he said.”I’ve always wanted to score a century in England. I scored a century against England in the Caribbean, but I would love to get one in England. As I said, when you score hundreds in England, I think, as a batsman people take you more serious and rate you a bit higher. I’m looking to have a good series with the bat, score as many runs as possible. I will not be happy if I don’t get at least one century.”ALSO READ: Root sledge ‘blown way out of proportion’ – GabrielThe onus on Chase to provide a sturdy bulwark at No. 5 or 6 has only increased in the absence of Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer, who batted either side of him against England in 2018-19. Certainly runs in the forthcoming three-match series would bolster Chase’s overall record, which has seen him enjoy the majority of his success at home, with only one century – in India in 2018 – and an average of 24.75 in away Tests.Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope led the way in Leeds three years ago, while both Chase and Jermaine Blackwood have experience of English conditions, and the ability of a reshaped West Indies batting line-up to put up fighting totals will likely go a long way to determining their chances of success.”It’s fair to say that we haven’t had the best time as a top order,” Chase said. “But I think some of the guys have played 30 or more Test matches, so the guys are experienced and know how to get runs at that level – so we are ever improving. It’s just for us to get that confidence and belief back in our batting in the top order and I think that will be fine because the guys know they have the ability.”While Chase was England’s destroyer with the ball at the Kensington Oval 18 months ago – his second-innings 8 for 60 perhaps aided by some “complacent” batting – he is happy to stand in the not-inconsiderable shadow of Rakheem Cornwall when it comes to spin-bowling duties on tour. Depending on whether West Indies choose to deploy a four-man pace attack or not, Chase will fill in as required and aim to keep England on their toes.Rahkeem Cornwall celebrates a wicket with captain Jason Holder•Getty Images”Yeah, he’s definitely the No. 1 spinner, but I have no problem with that,” Chase said of Cornwall, who made his Test debut last year. “I’m always willing to do whatever it takes for the team, if I have to back him up or if I have to be the main spinner, it doesn’t really matter to me. Once we’re going in the right direction and winning games and series, that’s all that really matters to me. Doesn’t matter if I’m No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 3, just want to go out there and do well for the country and for myself.”I’m comfortable with my role, batting in the middle order and bowling some overs when need be. The unit it a very close unit, all the guys are friends, we came up playing cricket from youth cricket days. We’re comfortable and just like to enjoy our company and enjoy the cricket and look to be successful.”In the first game [in Barbados last year], my lines and lengths and variation were spot on. And I guess the England batsmen – I wouldn’t want to say they underestimated me, but they were a bit complacent playing me. As the series went on they got a bit tighter. Having lost that first game, I thought they really tried to knuckle down and cope with my bowling and they did a good job.”One significant change from the previous meetings between these two sides is the addition of Jofra Archer to England’s bowling ranks. Like several of West Indies’ strong Bajan contingent, Chase came up against Archer during the young quick’s formative years – but their most-recent meeting came when the two appeared on opposing sides in the Sussex Premier League in 2015.”I do remember the game we played against Jofra,” Chase said. “This was before he even played for Sussex or anything like that. He actually got five wickets, he got me out as well. He pulled up after he got the five wickets and batting became a lot easier for us.”He was always a good talent but he wasn’t as rapid as he is now.”

SLC to terminate coach Hathurusingha's contract, finally

Hathurusingha has moved for compensation through the Court of Arbitration for Sport

Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to terminate Chandika Hathurusingha’s contract as head coach, while Hathurusingha has moved for compensation through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), following months of deadlock.Although SLC had suspended Hathurusingha as far back as August last year, they had continued to pay him for several months, while lawyers traded letters and the board sent Hathurusingha a list of alleged failings as head coach. The charges levelled by SLC include failure to adequately prepare the Sri Lanka side for various assignments, and failure to maintain good relationships with players. The board has finally resolved to terminate Hathurusingha’s contract, but the possibility that they will have to pay Hathurusingha a substantial amount for early termination remains. His contract was due to run until December this year.”At the last executive committee meeting, on Friday, it was decided that the contract would be terminated,” board CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo. “I can’t say by memory when we stopped the payments to [Hathurusingha], but I believe it was somewhere around October last year.”The board’s decision came after CAS, a global sporting body that aims to settle disputes related to sports via arbitration, sent them a letter listing Hathurusingha’s demands. De Silva confirmed that SLC is bound to the CAS process, and the board is now understood to be required to respond. This is likely because Hathurusingha’s contract with the board had stipulated that CAS could become involved if something like an early termination did eventuate. CAS will facilitate arbitration, and will effectively function as the intermediary between the parties for as long as this process lasts.Hathurusingha’s demands, conveyed to SLC by CAS, are understood to include not only loss of income from the early termination, but also compensation for damages to his reputation. He had remained in Sri Lanka through the early months of his legal tussle with SLC, but had returned home to Australia after the board’s payments ceased.Hathurusingha is the third head coach in the last five years whose tenure with Sri Lanka was ended before the contracted term was served. Marvan Atapattu and Graham Ford were both elbowed out of the position in 2015 and 2017 respectively. In 2013, SLC had also had to pay Geoff Marsh a substantial settlement after the board had terminated his contract early in 2012.

The Blues and Todd Boehly were once again busy in the transfer market last summer, bringing in multiple new players ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s first season in charge. They already appear to be planning for the summer as well, with Napoli star Victor Osimhen appearing to be a top target.

As can be seen, big money was splashed on a plethora of additions, however, that hasn’t improved the club’s fortunes in the Premier League with Chelsea on course to miss out on the top six once again.

They are in the final of the EFL Cup against Liverpool this weekend, but one player who will miss the Wembley showdown through injury may well end up leaving the club at the end of the current campaign.

Robert Sanchez could leave Chelsea

According to Football Insider, Chelsea have made a decision on the future of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, revealing he could already be set to exit Stamford Bridge.

“A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Chelsea plan to listen to offers for Sanchez, 26, who is now on the comeback trail after his last appearance against Everton in December 2023.”

In fact, Boehly and the Blues are plotting to sign a new first-choice ‘keeper in the summer, despite Dorde Petrovic impressing Pochettino in recent months. No names are mentioned, but it looks as if it could be a case of one in and one out in Sanchez, who is under contract until 2030.

The 26-year-old has made 16 top-flight appearances this season, keeping just three clean sheets and conceding 25 times.

However, he was hailed as a “monster” by former manager Graham Potter, who said during their time at Brighton in 2021:

“He is a monster in terms of his physicality. He’s not just big but he is powerful, he is fast. In terms of attributes as a goalkeeper, he has got everything to be a top goalkeeper. We have to keep helping him, supporting him. I thought he was really good. He made some good saves but also aerially helped out because Burnley challenge you in the box.”

As mentioned, he has been out through injury this year, so you could say it feels harsh making a decision on his future after just a few months of action. If Pochettino feels it is right, though, then Chelsea could grant him his wish with a new name in-between the sticks, making this one to watch over the coming months.

England appoint Chris Silverwood as men's head coach

Promoted bowling coach to be Trevor Bayliss’ successor, starting with November tour of New Zealand

Chris Silverwood has been appointed as England men’s head coach. The 44-year-old Silverwood was promoted from the role of bowling coach to head coach across all formats, succeeding Trevor Bayliss, who left the post at the end of the 2019 season.Silverwood emerged as the frontrunner for the job last week after Alec Stewart pulled out of the running and Gary Kirsten was also interviewed.Silverwood impressed the ECB’s selection panel, comprising Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison, Managing Director of England’s Men’s Cricket Ashley Giles and Head of Coach Development John Neal, through a strong interview and his intimate knowledge of the current set-up and systems.Giles said Silverwood was “the standout candidate”.”I believe he is what we need to take our international teams forward,” Giles said. “He is somebody we know well, but it is his intimate understanding of our structures and systems and his close relationships with Test captain Joe Root and white-ball captain Eoin Morgan that will help us develop our plans for the next few years.”He has performed exceptionally well during his role as an assistant coach and has the ultimate respect of the players that have worked with him.”Chris demonstrated in his interview a clear understanding and strategy of how both the red and white-ball teams need to evolve. He has some detailed thoughts on what it will take to win the Ashes in Australia and win major ICC white-ball tournaments.”Giles also said Silverwood’s relationships with county coaches and directors of cricket would be “invaluable”.”Having led Essex to the County Championship title in 2017, his legacy is very much in evidence this campaign, which saw Essex win the domestic double of the Specsavers County Championship and the Vitality Blast,” Giles said. “Ultimately, his highest quality is that he is a winner and that will be an important part of the job as we look to strive to become the most respected team in the world across all formats.”Silverwood’s first competitive series at the helm will be England’s tour of New Zealand, which includes a five-match IT20 series starting on November 1 in Christchurch and two Tests against the Black Caps from November 21.”I aim to continue the great work that has been done over the past five years and build on our future, especially in the Test arena,” Silverwood said. “I have enjoyed working with the players over the past two seasons, and developing the best crop of talent in the English game.”I am excited to get started and build teams that the whole game can be proud of. There is a tremendous amount of talent coming through, and there is enormous potential for growth. The hard work starts now, and I am confident we can make a positive impact during our winter tours of New Zealand and South Africa.”Silverwood became England’s full-time fast bowling coach at the end of 2017, working with the team throughout the past two seasons, including the victorious World Cup campaign.Silverwood played six Tests and seven ODIs for England between 1996 and 2002 and spent 13 years at his home county of Yorkshire, before three more seasons at Middlesex. In that time, he took 577 first-class wickets at an average of 27.41.After his retirement from playing, Silverwood joined the coaching staff at Essex in 2010. He was appointed head coach ahead of the 2016 season, leading them to promotion that same season and then on to the Championship title the following year.
