Brown and Benham thwart Lancashire

A round-up of the County Championship action on July 23, 2008

Cricinfo staff23-Jul-2008Two determined 70s from Michael Brown and Chris Benham gave Hampshire a fighting chance in their match against Lancashire on the second day at Old Trafford. Lancashire resumed on 261 for 5, and Francois du Plessis’ 57 – his third fifty this season – elevated his side’s total to a challenging 357. Imran Tahir, the Hampshire legspinner, removed Gary Keedy to pick up his fifth wicket, but Hampshire were soon in a sticky position at 35 for 3. Saj Mahmood removed Sean Ervine in his first over – only thanks to a stunning catch from du Plessis at point – before John Crawley inexplicably left a straight one from Glen Chapple. After Michael Lumb was out for 9, Brown and Benham set about their recovery mission in contrasting styles, but put on a vital fourth-wicket stand of 139 and remain unbeaten going into the third day.For John Ward’s report of the second day between Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire at Trent Bridge click here.Northamptonshire are in complete control of their match against Leicestershire at Northampton, forcing the visitors to follow-on. At stumps on the second day, Leicestershire had fallen to 8 for 1 with David Lucas picking up his fifth wicket. Earlier, David Sales moved onto 150 while Lance Klusener cracked 65 as Northamptonshire added a further 99 from their overnight 274 for 4. And then the hosts’ bowlers took over. Nicky Boje pulled off a stunning gully catch to remove Matt Boyce before Tom New edged Lucas to third slip. 13 for 2 became 60 for 4 when Jacques du Toit fell to the impressive Lucas, and although Jim Allenby offered resistance with 47, Leicestershire were steamrolled for 173. Following-on, Nadeem Malik, the nightwatchman, fell just before the close as Leicestershire face a huge task to save the match with two days to go.Ben Smith’s 93 helped Worcestershire steal a 50-run lead over Middlesex on the second day at Lord’s, as the visitors closed on 350 for 9. Worcestershire began confidently, Darryl Mitchell and Stephen Moore putting on 50 for the opening partnership, but Danny Evans lured Moore into driving at a wider delivery to make the breakthrough. Vikram Solanki came and went, shortly followed by Mitchell when he was trapped in front by Tim Murtagh. At 76 for 3 Worcestershire were beginning to slip, but they recovered after lunch – largely thanks to Smith, whose fifty came from 83 balls. Stephen Davies (22) and Gareth Batty (39) each shared in half-century stands with Smith who, on 93, was beaten by a lovely piece of flight from Murali Kartik, caught at silly point.Danish Kaneria’s three wickets has put Essex in a strong position on the second day against Gloucestershire at Chelmsford, after the visitors only managed a first-innings lead of four runs. Essex might have had the match by the scruff of the neck, however, as Varun Chopra and Jason Gallian put on 74 for the opening wicket. But when Chopra was bowled by Mark Hardinges, Essex struggled. Vikram Banerjee removed Neil Dexter, and when Ryan ten Doeschate shouldered arms to the same bowler, Gloucestershire had Essex limping on 109 for 6. James Foster, however, ensured Essex wouldn’t fold completely, cracking another fifty and was well supported by James Middlebrook (41) to loft their side to 279. Kaneria then took control, removing William Porterfield, Alex Gidman and Chris Taylor, leaving Gloucestershire tottering on 70 for 6, leading by just 66.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to win over Walsall

Crystal Palace successfully kicked off life under new manager Patrick Vieira with a 1-0 win away to Walsall in pre-season on Saturday.

In a game of fine margins, the only goal was scored by Eagles talisman Wilfried Zaha. Rolling his marker, he then proceeded to exchange passes with youngster Rob Street before slotting past Carl Rushworth effortlessly [saddlers.co.uk].

Fielding a completely different team in both halves [cpfc.co.uk], Vieira was able to get an extensive look at the blend of experience and youth he has inherited at Selhurst Park for his first match in charge at the club.

Vieira’s side will travel to Portman Road next Saturday to face League One outfit Ipswich Town in their next pre-season outing.

In light of Saturday’s victory over Walsall, plenty of Crystal Palace diehards took to social media to revel in the result, albeit a friendly win over League Two opposition.

Forest enter into Alassane Ndao talks

Nottingham Forest have entered into talks regarding a deal to bring Alassane Ndao to The City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Turkish journalist Yagız Sabuncuoglu, who revealed in a post on Twitter that Nottingham Forest have entered into official talks with Fatih Karagumruk regarding a deal for the 24-year-old winger.

It has been reported that Chris Hughton is keen to add more firepower to his squad in the summer transfer window, with it appearing as if the Senegal international – for whom the Turkish side are believed to be demanding a fee of around €5m (£4.2m) to part with – is one of the 62-year-old’s primary targets ahead of next season.

Hughton will be buzzing

Considering how highly Ndao impressed for Karagumruk last season, the fact that Forest appear to be in talks regarding a deal for the winger is sure to have left the Garibaldi boss buzzing.

Indeed, over his 38 Super Lig appearances for Francesco Farioli’s side last term, the £4.05m-rated man scored 11 goals, registered nine assists and created a whopping 16 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.5 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game.

These returns saw the 24-year-old earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Karagumruk’s ninth-best performer in the top flight of Turkish football, helping his side secure an impressive eighth-place finish in the league.

And, with Forest having desperately struggled to find the back of the net in the Championship last season, with only Derby County scoring fewer than the Reds’ 37 league goals, it would certainly appear as if additions to Hughton’s attacking arsenal are a priority at the club this summer.

As such, with the £4.5k-per-week Ndao demonstrating he can both score and create a considerable amount of goals, the winger looks to be a potentially fantastic addition to the 62-year-old’s options at The City Ground next season, if the club can indeed get a deal over the line for him in the summer transfer window. Hughton will be buzzing if they can.

Sam Lienert18-Oct-2002ADELAIDE, Oct 18 AAP – A discarded Victorian spinner, a rookie who had taken just two previous first-class wickets and an occasional medium pacer today bowled South Australia to the first outright victory of the Pura Cup season, against Victoria at Adelaide Oval. The Bushrangers were out for 303 in their second innings shortly before the scheduled final day tea break, giving SA a 208-run outright win after Victoria had taken first innings points.Victoria, which trailed SA by 511 runs heading into its second innings, started today at 2-94 and never looked likely to save the game, losing four wickets in the opening session, and another four in the second session.All-rounder Ian Harvey top-scored with an unbeaten 63 and Darren Berry made 52.Ex-Victorian off-spinner John Davison, in his first match for SA, was the chief destroyer.Having not made the Bushrangers’ side in either form of the game last season, Davison showed he still had plenty to offer at first-class level, taking 4-107.His wickets included the key scalps of Victorian openers Matthew Elliott (21) and Jason Arnberger (42) yesterday, as well as the prize wicket of Brad Hodge (22) today, the first three Bushrangers to fall.Davison, 32, joined SA this season after failing to earn a place in the Victorian side since the 2000/01 Pura Cup final, which Victoria lost to Queensland.Paceman Ryan Harris, who had played just two previous Pura Cup matches for his state and taken only two first-class wickets, finished today with 3-64.And all-rounder Ben Johnson, who top-scored with 165 in SA’s second innings, took the final three wickets of the match, finishing with 3-4 from just three overs after being introduced for the first time in the 100th over of Victoria’s innings.Johnson was named man of the match.SA skipper Greg Blewett said he was pleased with the number of players who made vital contributions, particularly Davison and ex-NSW recruit Mark Higgs, who made a second-innings century, and all-rounder Michael Miller, who took seven first-innings wickets after not playing a game last year.”It was just a great team effort, just about everyone did something,” Blewett said.”I’m particularly pleased with Davo, the first three wickets against his old side, I’m sure he would have been pretty rapt with that.”We haven’t had an off-spinner here for quite a few years, so he’s certainly a handy recruit.”Victorian acting skipper Elliott resigned from the role after the loss.Elliott, who was officially the team’s vice captain under Shane Warne but would have led the side in most matches given Warne’s commitments with the Australian team, handed over the reins to former skipper Berry for the rest of the season.Elliott said he felt the captaincy affected his batting.”It’s certainly not a reflection of what’s going on with the team, it’s an exciting time for us with all the people we’ve got involved, it’s just that I feel like I’m not putting my best playing foot forward,” he said.

Most Bangladeshis don't have the ability to buy cricket materials

It’s a woefully regretting fact that most Bangladeshis don’t have the ability to buy cricket kits, despite their maddening eagerness towards the game

Shahryar Khan23-May-2002It’s a woefully regretting fact that most Bangladeshis don’t have the ability to buy cricket kits, despite their maddening eagerness towards the game. Feel sorry for the millions of kids all over the country who are deprived of getting adequate cricket materials they need to flourish their talents; hence, had to content with the tennis ball and hand made ragged bat and with those twigs of trees meant for stump. Many families here can’t put up with their sons’ demands of buying them a cricket ball, pad, a handy bat or guards because they are high priced. As a result many promising kids don’t even come to the ground. So, the pricey cricket kits don’t allow the kids belong to a poor family enter the realm of this game. Most of the materials come from India and Pakistan, saying that the price list is relatively cheap there. The cost of a ball ranges from Taka 90 to Taka 250, the lowest price of a batting pad is 265 Taka, wicket keeping gloves cost 250 Taka and a bat made to play even the tennis ball costs no less than 180 Taka. This is the scenario; let alone there is need to wear helmets or thigh guards, which are much costlier and quite expensive for most of the families here. The important thing is that there are hardly any price tags found on those materials bought from India and Pakistan. The sports shops here, are enterprisingly exploiting the chance, as the materials have no price tags on them. They are tagging the kits with their desired price (Of course a much higher one), thus making those unaffordable for the common people.Buying capabilities or affordability has quite a good link with the development of cricket anywhere. Bangladesh is enjoying the Test status for more than eighteen months, still the government is reluctant to lend a hand to import cricket materials. The government should help the importers in this respect, so that the materials could be reasonably priced, easily purchasable within the reach of all.

Spurs plan Nuno talks

According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are now planning talks with Nuno Espirito Santo behind the scenes and it is even said that managing director Fabio Paratici is personally leading the pursuit.

The Lowdown: Spurs manager search takes twist…

After failed talks with Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso, Spurs are back to square on in their hunt for a new manager and must re-evaluate the list of candidates.

As such, links have re-emerged to the likes of Graham Potter and Nuno in recent days, with talkSPORT reporter Ian Abrahams even stating it is a two horse race between the pair for Tottenham’s hotseat.

The arrival of new managing director Paratici is also a crucial factor in Tottenham’s manager search with the Italian set to oversee their on-field sporting operations.

The Latest: Tottenham planning Nuno talks…

As per Football Insider, Tottenham are now plotting talks with Nuno behind the scenes in what they call a ‘shock twist’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The club’s stance on appointing the Portuguese has apparently changed due to a series of collapsed talks, with Spurs seemingly lurching from one disaster to the next.

A Spurs source has now told the outlet that Nuno is a contender to replace Jose Mourinho and negotiations are now expected with the ex-Wolves gaffer.

Paratici is also believed to be personally leading the pursuit for him after the north Londoners conducted background checks.

The Verdict: Great candidate?

Lauded as an ‘outstanding manager’ by talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan recently, who wanted him at Spurs, it is little wonder given what he accomplished at Molineux before an emotional farewell.

Winning a Championship title with Wolves and gaining promotion back to the Premier League, Nuno went on to guide them to two consecutive seventh-placed finishes in the top flight and a run to the Europa League quarter-final stages (BBC).

Wolves also narrowly just missed out on an FA Cup final in 2019 after losing their Wembley semi to Watford, with his four years in the Midlands described as an ‘unquestioned success’ (BBC).

Spurs could certainly do far worse in their hunt for a new manager, but we believe fellow candidate Potter is a better shout due to his more open, attacking style.

West Brom close to appointing Ismael

West Bromwich Albion are close to appointing Valerien Ismael as the new manager at The Hawthorns.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that a deal to bring the Barnsley boss to West Brom is all but done following developments that occurred during talks on Saturday.

The report goes on to state that Guochuan Lai and Ismael have agreed the terms of his contract with the club, while the Baggies will now approach the Tykes to discuss buying the 45-year-old out of his current deal, something that is believed will cost West Brom around £2m.

Fans will be buzzing

Having endured their club going through a rather arduous search to appoint Sam Allardyce’s successor, with moves for names such as Chris Wilder, David Wagner, Roy Hodgson, Frank Lampard and Michael Appleton all failing for a variety of reasons, the news that West Brom now appear close to landing their new manager is sure to have Albion fans buzzing.

And, considering the rather remarkable job Ismael did after taking over at Barnsley in October of last year – when the club’s CEO Dane Murphy claimed that the Frenchman was a “standout” candidate for the role – it would very much seem as if the 45-year-old is one of the better candidates Lai has targeted.

Indeed, despite the Tykes being predicted by FourFourTwo to finish the Championship season in a lowly 18th place before a ball was kicked, in addition to having not won a single game from their opening seven league fixtures of the 2020/21 season prior to Ismael’s arrival, the Frenchman went on to guide his side to a rather astonishing 23 wins, five draws and 11 losses over his 39 league games in charge of the club, securing a fifth-place finish for a much unfancied Barnsley side, before narrowly losing out in the play-off semi-finals to Swansea City.

Adding in the fact that the former VfL Wolfsburg manager arrived after the summer transfer window had closed, in addition to signing just three young players in the January transfer window, Barnsley’s astonishing form is very solid evidence that the 45-year-old is a fantastic coach who can get the best from a group of players.

As such, given a greater transfer budget to work with, as well as a side brimming with Premier League experience, should Lai indeed go on to land Ismael this summer, it would appear to bode extremely well for West Brom’s chances of going on to secure an immediate return to the Premier League next season – an outcome that would delight everyone involved with the club.

Advantage still up for grabs in Alexandra

Neither Otago nor Canterbury could claim to have secured the advantage after the first play of their State Championship match at Molyneux Park in Alexandra today.Otago, limped their way to 206 after being 66/4 and 121/6 at different stages of their innings while Canterbury at stumps were in the precarious position of 31/3.When play began this morning in the 156th first-class contest between the two sides, a clear blue sky with a cool temperature greeted the players but by the time stumps were drawn a very hot day had been experienced.Brendon McCullum, with a forceful 40, led the way for Otago with the first wicket not being lost until the total reached 60.Runs were hard to come by for many periods of play but Craig Pryor with 46 fought hard and a patient 29 by No 9 Nathan Morland was all Otago had to look back on with any satisfaction.Debutants Jordan Sheed and Scott Waide scored 14 and 12 respectively and gave us a small glimpse of future promise. Martyn Croy faced 76 balls for seven runs. The Canterbury bowling was quite tight with Wade Cornelius impressing again with four for 36 from his 25.5 overs.Paul Wiseman, in perhaps not his best season, with three for 22 from 13 also bowled well, while Chris Harris with two for 35 from 20 overs was most economical.Warren Wisneski left the field with an injured foot having no success for 46 from 12.2 overs. Ryan Burson with one for 49 from 18 overs completed the Canterbury wicket takers.Canterbury started their innings with only nine overs to bat until stumps and never found the exercise easy. They lost Shanan Stewart for one, Robbie Frew for 15 and nightwatchman Burson for three to be 31/3 at the close of play.Bowling for Otago, David Sewell had good reward for his initial efforts with two for eight while Kerry Walsmley took the other wicket at a cost of 21 runs.Day two looms as a most interesting one with Canterbury desperate to get first innings points but against an Otago side which seems to have the upper hand at the end of day one.

Pundit makes big Joe Gelhardt claim

Former Scotland international Frank McAvennie believes youngster Joe Gelhardt should feature regularly for Leeds United next season.

The Lowdown: Gelhardt impresses at Leeds

Gelhardt is seen as one of the most exciting youngsters at Elland Road, with the 19-year-old scoring three goals in six caps for England Under-18s.

While the forward is yet to make his senior Leeds debut, he has been excellent for the Under-23s, bagging 11 goals in 17 appearances last season, also chipping in with three assists.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

The Latest: McAvennie makes big claim

Marcelo Bielsa could be looking to sign another attacking player this summer, but McAvennie believes Gelhardt could step up to the plate.

Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker claimed the teenager would be a ‘better’ option than someone like Arsenal youngster Eddie Nketiah:

“I think a youngster like Gelhardt is better suited to that role. They have boys coming through and Leeds fans will want that. Every fan wants to see top players coming through their academy.

“They get given more time as well, there’s more understanding there as a young player too. The fans won’t immediately be on their case if it doesn’t go right for them.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-5/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Time for Gelhardt to shine?

There is no doubt that Gelhardt looks a young player of huge promise based on his record at the youth level – he has also been called a ‘special talent’ by former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook – but making the step up to a team that finished in the top-half of the Premier League last season could be a big ask.

Leeds are in a position where they could be aiming for the European places in 2021/22, so the need to signing top-quality players is clear to see.

If Bielsa believes Gelhardt is ready to be a regular in the squad, he will show faith in him, but not signing anyone could prove to be a big risk if the youngster struggles, which is perfectly normal for a teenager’s first crack at the big time.

In other news, a reliable journalist has made a big claim regarding Leeds’ interest in one player. Find out who it is here.
