Patel keeps Nottinghamshire in the hunt

Scorecard
Champions-elect Nottinghamshire will face an intriguing final day at Chester-le-Street, where Durham lead by 308 with five wickets standing. The leaders were wilting badly in the afternoon sunshine, when Gordon Muchall and Dale Benkenstein were putting on 144 in 30 overs. But Samit Patel halted the spree by taking three wickets and Durham closed on 279 for 5 in their second innings. Unless they are bowled out they will face a tricky decision over when to declare on a pitch still full of runs.Following his unbeaten 140 at Basingstoke four weeks ago, Muchall made his second century since being recalled to the side in mid-season. He throttled back after racing to 50 off 52 balls, helped by an injury to Darren Pattinson – who came into the match as the replacement for RyanSidebottom, who had to link up with the England Twenty20 squad.Pattinson limped off after his first ball 10 minutes before lunch. His ankle appeared to give way in his delivery stride and when he tried to bowl in mid-afternoon he conceded 26 runs in two overs and retired again. Muchall pulled and cut three fours in Pattinson’s first four balls then cutPaul Franks for his eighth boundary to reach 50.His century came off 129 balls but he fell for 111 when thrusting his pad well forward in attempting to sweep Samit Patel. The left-arm spinner also had Benknestein stumped for 58 and forced Ben Harmison to play on for 11, while Andre Adams had both left-handed openers -Michael Di Venuto and Mark Stoneman – lbw. Adams now has 58 championshipvictims, five ahead of the field in County Championship Division One.As Sidebottom had gone in as nightwatchman yesterday and was unbeaten on five, he had to be marked down as retired not out. Pattinson replaced him at the crease and made 19 before he was last out with the total on 343, but his injury meant both sides are a bowler light. The fact that Mark Davies will take no further part because of a sciatic nerve problem could influence Durham’s declaration. Ian Blackwell will resume on 50 and Phil Mustard on 13, looking to set a target of at least 350.

The UK’s Betting Self-Exclusion for Football Fans

Every day of every week somewhere in the world, football matches are being played to the delight of football fans all over the globe. This is also something that makes avid football gamblers happy. For the most avid football gamblers in the UK, having an opportunity to bet on football matches every day is a dream come true.

Unfortunately, too much online betting on too many football games could lead to gambling addiction. Yes, there are people in the online sports betting world who have trouble controlling their online gambling activities. By some estimates, that could be about 6% of the online gambling population in the UK, even around the world.

In the worst of gambling addiction cases, treatment and counselling would be the right call. Almost all addicts have something they need to sort out before they can set aside their addictive behaviours. Once they get the help they need, they should restrict themselves from ever gambling again.

Of course, online problem gambling issues don’t always lead to gambling addiction. Sometimes a problem gambling issue is nothing more than a sign that may be a break from online gambling would be a good idea.

Taking a Break with GamStop

As the UK’s number one gambling regulator, the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) works hard to make sure the UK gambling industry is doing its part to protect kids and vulnerable problem gamblers. Within the online gambling community, the UKGC’s GamStop Self-exclusion scheme sits front and centre in the nation’s effort to deal with gambling addiction.

The beauty of the GamStop program lies in its simplicity. For UK online gambling operators, GamStop membership is mandated by the UKGC as a condition of licensing. To become a compliant member, operators only need to pay a subscription fee and place an accessible link on their respective websites.

For UK online gamblers, the voluntary registration process is free and only takes a few minutes to complete. All they have to do if they want help taking a break from their online gambling activities is to provide some basic personal information and choose a self-exclusion period with options ranging from 6 months to 5 years.

Once registration has been completed, the registered GamStop gambler will get the break they need. There is nothing that will stop the football online gambler from settling in as nothing more than a football fan. That is unless they decide self-exclusion is not for them. If and when that happens, the GamStop football gambler will have to make decisions.

Getting Around UK Self-Exclusion

Since GamStop registration is voluntary and a short-term self-exclusion option, there is nothing that prevents the GamStop gambler from changing their mind. If they change their mind, they will immediately have to face the fact that using licensed UK gambling websites won’t be an option. They will also find out there are ways to get around GamStop scrutiny until their self-exclusion period ends.

Leading the way of non GamStop alternatives would be UK gambling sites that are not GamStop members and or are not licensed by the UKGC. The reality is they are lots of non GamStop UK betting sites for online wagering available to gamblers trying to avoid GamStop scrutiny. Even better many of these sites are terrific alternatives because they are reliable and work hard to maintain stellar reputations.

If a GamStop gambler isn’t comfortable with this option, they might find other options more appealing. Here are some other non GamStop options worth mentioning:

Crypto-only casinos do not do much in the way of customer verifications Other offshore jurisdictions are quite welcoming of UK gamblers (VPN might be needed) Some operators have weak account verification protocols Retail gambling establishments in the UK have no connection to the GamStop scheme It’s acceptable to open new accounts under other identities with the permission of the new accountholder

For the avid football fan who decides to take a GamStop break, the hope is a short break will be all that’s necessary before they can safely start betting on football matches again. They may do so with licensed UK sports betting operators and their self-exclusion period expires.

Yuvraj recalled for Sri Lanka Tests

Yuvraj Singh has been recalled to the Indian squad for the three-Test series in Sri Lanka starting next month, after being dropped for the recently concluded Asia Cup

Sidharth Monga26-Jun-2010Yuvraj Singh, who was dropped for the recently concluded Asia Cup, has been recalled to India’s squad for the three-Test series in Sri Lanka starting July 18. Suresh Raina, who has been part of Test squads before as injury cover, made it as a first-choice player for the first time. As expected, the selectors went back to Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth to partner Zaheer Khan in the pace department, and three spinners were selected, which meant both Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha were in. A 16-man member squad was chosen to include a reserve wicketkeeper, Wriddhiman Saha.Earlier this month, Yuvraj was dropped from the limited-overs side for the first time since he cemented his place in the early 2000s. Fitness, more than form, was seen as the reason behind the move: he hadn’t been in droppable form in international cricket. The drop was seen as a necessary wake-up call for him. Captain MS Dhoni, however, is a big fan of Yuvraj’s talent, and could have insisted that he be recalled. The selectors perhaps thought that the necessary message had been delivered. The other middle-order selection was due. Raina was part of the squad for India’s last Test, against South Africa in February, but only because of a spate of injuries. Since then he has shown he can survive in international cricket despite an obvious weakness against the short ball. It cannot be denied that he has been scoring consistently despite that awkwardness.A week after he played a winning hand against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, ticking the box of performing in pressure situations, Raina is confident, willing and fit. It is perhaps the best time to put him through the big test, to find out if he can emulate the likes of Steve Waugh and Sourav Ganguly, who were successful in Tests even though Waugh eliminated the hook shot and Ganguly always had to work hard to fight his weakness against the short ball. To think of Waugh and Ganguly is a step too far, but Raina deserved a chance to fail, and he has earned it.Ishant and Sreesanth, part of India’s last Test squad, have gone through pretty ordinary times in limited-overs cricket since then, both in the IPL and while playing for India. They were duly dropped, but are still the best bets for the Test side. More so because none of the alternatives tried in their absence have impressed enough. And Ashish Nehra is not willing to play Tests, while Praveen Kumar is strictly a limited-overs bowler.More importantly, this selection could point to a practical outlook from the selectors, that of having identified Ishant and Sreesanth as Test specialists, and having realised the need to protect them from the excessive one-day cricket, which could have played a part in their downfall.Lack of alternatives could have prompted India to go for three spinners, giving Ojha another chance in a Test squad. India, however, are likely to play two seamers and two spinners barring extraordinary circumstances, and the three-day game at Nondescripts Cricket Club should provide a good competition between Ishant and Sreesanth, and Mishra and Ojha.Squad: MS Dhoni (wk & capt.), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag (vice-capt.), Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, M Vijay, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth, Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ojha, Wriddhiman Saha (wk)

World Cup final a dream – Tendulkar

Every time Sachin Tendulkar walks out to bat he has the hopes of billions rested on his shoulders, but when India co-host the World Cup next year expectations will reach even greater levels

Andrew McGlashan14-Jun-2010Every time Sachin Tendulkar walks out to bat he has the hopes of billions rested on his shoulders, yet when India co-host the World Cup next year expectations will reach even greater levels. The final will be hosted in Mumbai, Tendulkar’s home town, but he is refusing to let his mind wander towards the prospect of a moment that would crown his career.”As far as the World Cup is concerned it is a process. We don’t want to jump to the 50th floor straight away, we must start on the ground floor,” he said. “We must take it step-by-step but to get there would be a fascinating journey. It is our dream, not just mine but the entire nation, to get there. To play the final in Mumbai is something you can only dream of and everything has to come together.”But if we can play to the best of our potential then I think we can do something we have been longing to do for quite some time.”Tendulkar is currently taking a break from the game but will return to Indian colours for the Test series against Sri Lanka next month. The five-day format has suddenly taken on a much greater priority in India – although Tendulkar, himself, has always been adamant it is the main brand of the game – after the team reached No. 1 in the world. They will look to consolidate that position against Sri Lanka before a mouth-watering contest in South Africa at the end of the year as the top two ranked teams go head-to-head over three Tests at Centurion, Durban and Cape Town. It will be a huge challenge for India to compete in foreign conditions against the likes of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, but Tendulkar doesn’t want to let the top spot slip away after working so hard for the honour.”To be number one is special, it was our dream and our target to get to the number one spot in Test cricket,” he said. “We have had a good run in the last 20 months. Everyone wants to be number one and we cannot relax because there are other countries who want to be number one. It means a lot to us.”At 37, it won’t be too long before Tendulkar calls time on his stellar career. He has already cut back his Twenty20 commitments and doesn’t play that format internationally, while he also declined a deal with Middlesex this season to spend more time with his family. However, for the time being he has no plans to end his Test or one-day days.”I want to play for as long as possible and as long as I have the desire and the hunger I will carry on,” he said. “The day I do not want to get out of bed and do anything then I know it will be time to go in another direction.” Sachin Tendulkar is an RBS brand ambassador and was speaking in London to mark 30 years of NatWest involvement in English cricket

West Brom: Hugill departs The Hawthorns

West Bromwich Albion have parted ways with Jordan Hugill in the January transfer window.

What’s the latest?

In a short statement on the West Brom website, the club confirmed that the centre-forward has now returned to Norwich City – with his season-long loan spell at The Hawthorns being cut six months short.

A further report by the Express & Star went on to state that, since the opening of the winter market, the 29-year-old has been continually linked with a move back to his parent club, although it was questionable whether the striker would be able to leave the Baggies due to having no recall clause in his temporary contract.

However, in the club’s recent post, Albion confirmed that Hugill has indeed returned to the Premier League side, stating: “Jordan Hugill has today returned to Norwich City following a loan spell at The Hawthorns. The striker made 20 appearances during a five-month stint with the Baggies after joining last summer. Everybody at Albion thanks Jordan for his efforts and wishes him well in his future career.”

What fans have been waiting for

Considering just how poor Hugill has been since his arrival at The Hawthorns last summer, the news that the centre-forward has now left the club is sure to have delighted the Baggies’ fanbase – as seeing the back of the forward very much looks to be something Albion supporters have been waiting for.

Indeed, over his 20 Championship appearances – only seven of which came as starts – the £1.62m-rated hitman managed to find the back of the net just once, failed to provide his teammates with a single assist, created no big chances for his side and missed nine big chances of his own.

These returns saw the 29-year-old average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.56, ranking him as Valerien Ismael’s sixth-worst performer in the second tier of English football – something which makes it clear for all to see why the Frenchman was happy to send the centre-forward back to Norwich this month.

However, exactly why the club believed Hugill would be the striker to fire them to promotion in the first place – following a season in which he scored four goals over 31 Championship appearances for the Canaries – will quite rightly raise questions about the Albion’s recruitment and scouting processes.

West Brom: Fans react to Barnsley details

West Brom confirmed on Tuesday morning that fans attending Friday’s match away to Barnsley will need to present an NHS Covid-19 passport.

As to be expected, a number of Baggies fans were quick to react to the news on social media.

Valerien Ismael’s side had to deal with a viral outbreak over the weekend, with three senior defenders absent after returning positive tests.

West Brom were refused permission by the EFL to postpone the fixture, but they still managed to grind out a 1-0 win over Reading at The Hawthorns, extending their unbeaten home run to 11 games.

The Baggies have now shared details that supporters attending Oakwell on Friday will need to provide proof of double vaccination or a negative lateral flow test when entering the stadium. Those rules will also apply at The Hawthorns, with West Brom set to host Preston North End before the New Year.

Dane Murray could be Celtic’s next star

Celtic currently have a significant number of players in their senior squad that have come through the club’s youth academy and play for the first team such as James Forrest and Callum McGregor, who have made a combined total of 42 appearances between them across all competitions this season.

Looking ahead to who could be the next regular figure for Celtic to come through the club’s academy, one potential candidate that could be set for a big future at the Parkhead club is 18-year-old Dane Murray, who has been touted to have a “bright future” ahead of him by Stephen Welsh.

As a product of Celtic’s youth system, Murray is predominantly a midfield player but has been deployed as a centre-back by Ange Postecoglou, which gives a clue as to what the Celtic manager sees in the teenager in terms of his skills and qualities on the pitch.

In Celtic’s 2-1 defeat against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League qualifying second-leg clash back in July, Murray played at the back for the full 120 minutes and managed to show everyone just what he’s capable of from a defensive point of view.

Murray managed to make six clearances, seven interceptions and three tackles as well as winning 11 duels and not getting dribbled past even once.

This display earned the youngster an impressive overall match rating of 7.3/10 according to SofaScore, making him Celtic’s joint-second highest rated player on the day, proving that he definitely has what it takes to play at a high level alongside the rest of Celtic’s more senior players.

In the first leg against Midtjylland, Murray played 45 minutes of action after Nir Bitton got sent off, after which fellow Hoops defender Welsh described the youngster’s performance as “fantastic,” which could be why Postecoglou selected him to start the second leg.

Looking ahead to the future, even though Murray hasn’t been involved in a matchday squad for Celtic in the league this season, he definitely has what it takes to break into Postecoglou’s side at some point in the future.

Consider the talent he’s shown so far and the fact that he has time on his side with his young age and he could save the club millions in potential future transfer fees.
