    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 25-year-old Canadian forward left Lille as a free agent this summer. The forward wants to join Juve, but his camp are demanding a big fee of around €15 million (£13m/$17m). Juve general manager Damien Comolli is deterred by the high fees, and David has personally spoken to his camp to reduce the demands and negotiate a deal. The Italian club have also shortlisted other forwards in case there's a fallout in David's deal.

Comolli has many plans for the club. From showing interest in Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson to heavily pushing to bring Jadon Sancho to Turin, the club want to secure a few big names as they head into the upcoming Champions League. Northern Diamonds' title defence ends with defeat to Sunrisers in rain-hit thriller

Jo Gardner, Flo Miller share unbroken 49-run stand to set up Sunrisers’ fourth straight win

The Northern Diamonds’ title defence in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy is over – their fate sealed during a thrilling final-day group defeat against Sunrisers at Durham. The Diamonds needed to beat the Sunrisers – also eliminated today – at the Seat Unique Riverside to have any chance of progression for the knockout stages next week. But other results also needed to go their way, which they didn’t and were confirmed as the Diamonds were about to start their defence of a revised target of 126 in 18 overs, which came down to the visitors needing 10 off the last over. The Diamonds made 114 for 6 in 18 overs after play was delayed until 2pm and further interrupted. Bess Heath top-scored for the hosts with a quick-fire 37 off 21 balls two days after making her senior England debut, while new-ball seamer Eva Gray impressed with 2 for 24.Sunrisers, who needed a bonus victory amidst a host of other things to go their way to finish in the top three places, then hunted down their Duckworth Lewis Stern target for the loss of four wickets with three balls to spare.Fifth-wicket pair Jo Gardner and Flo Miller were their heroes, sharing an unbroken 49. Gardner finished 30 not out off 21 balls and Miller 20 off 16 as Sunrisers won their fourth successive game. After visiting captain Grace Scrivens elected to bowl, Gray bowled key duo Lauren Winfield-Hill and Hollie Armitage with two beautiful nip-backers, leaving Diamonds at 26 for 2 in the fifth over. The one which bowled Winfield-Hill for 1 uprooted leg-stump and the one which removed captain Armitage for 13 flattened off.The Diamonds, led by Netherlands international opener Sterre Kalis, did pretty well to steady the ship in tricky conditions – a grey sky, floodlights on and definite nip off the pitch. They reached 47 for 2 after 10 overs, with Kalis pulling a couple of crisp boundaries in 28.Unfortunately for her, she fell in the 11th when Kelly Castle took a stunning one-handed catch peddling back from mid-off to help leg-spinner Jodi Grewcock strike – 51 for 3.Heath then came in and showed significant intent and went on to hit three fours and a six – the latter over midwicket. She hammered Grewcock down the ground for her first boundary, and it seemed as if she was trying to up the rate for the Diamonds with the rain having returned.Umpires Hasan Adnan and Gabi Brown called for the covers to return just after 3pm, with the Diamonds 68 for 3 after 13 overs.Play resumed at 4.20pm, with the Diamonds batting for five more overs. Heath hit her for six but was one of three batters who holed out as Castle, Mady Villiers and Scrivens all struck.On-loan seamer Sophia Turner then bowled an attacking Scrivens for 11, leaving Sunrisers at 20 for 1 in the fourth over of their chase.Sunrisers steadied and kept in touch, as opener Ariana Dowse – a centurion earlier this week in victory over Blaze – made her way to 27.But she fell as one of two wickets in three balls to seamers Grace Hall and Phoebe Turner as the score fell to 60 for 3 in the 11th over.Dowse miscued Hall into the covers and Villiers found deep square-leg off Turner. It felt a big moment, but not so. Hall struck again when she bowled Amara Carr for 29, leaving the score at 77 for 4 in the 13th over.Sunrisers kept in touch thanks to some clean hitting, chiefly from Gardner, who hoisted Hall for six over long-on in the penultimate over. The game was then sealed by a Lizzie Scott wide. The Diamonds failing to qualify for the knockout stages means next Sunday’s final at Northampton will be the first time in four years that this competition’s showpiece will be contested by somebody else but the Diamonds and the Southern Vipers. The latter have qualified, though. The Diamonds suffered their seventh defeat, while the Sunrisers won for the sixth time in this competition. They hadn’t won a 50-over in three seasons prior to 2023, so progression for them is obvious.

Why Barcelona were already running out of patience with Nico Williams before dramatic transfer snub – explained

Barcelona were running out of patience with Nico Williams and his agent before the Spain international commited his future to Athletic Club by signing a new long-term contract. Williams was once again closely linked with a move to the Blaugrana this summer after transfer talks broke down last year, however, the winger eventually penned a new Atheltic Club contract which runs until 2035.

The Williams to Barcelona transfer saga finally ended last Friday with the young winger putting pen to paper on a new 10-year contract at Athletic Club. Earlier in the summer, Williams reportedly agreed to join the Catalan side but eventually decided to stay back at his current club.

AdvertisementTHE EXPLANATION

According to , Barcelona started to run out of patience despite getting a verbal confirmation from Williams in June about a possible transfer. The Spanish sensation and his agent reportedly did not want to add a release clause in his contract to protect the player from running out of action in case the Blaugrana failed to register him at some point in the future. Such a condition was not implemented in the case of Dani Olmo's transfer last summer, but Williams wanted to safeguard himself.

DID YOU KNOW?

The report added that the La Liga champions straightaway rejected the player's proposal and were insisting on completing the transfer unconditionally. Williams and his agent, on the other hand, kept delaying the move, which in turn increased frustration among Barcelona officials.

Shaheen Shah Afridi ranked No. 1 ODI bowler for the first time

He soars seven spots to move to the top of the table after an impressive start to the ODI World Cup

Shaheen Shah Afridi has been Pakistan’s shining light in the World Cup•Associated Press

Shaheen Shah Afridi, the Pakistan fast bowler, has soared seven spots to become the No. 1 ranked ODI bowler in the format, according to the latest ICC rankings. The 23-year-old speedster has had an impressive start to his ODI World Cup where he is currently the joint-leading wicket-taker alongside Adam Zampa, with 16 wickets in seven innings at 19.93.Afridi displaced Australia quick Josh Hazlewood, who now moves to second, from the top spot. Mohammed Siraj and Keshav Maharaj have also lost one place moving to third and fourth position on the table respectively. This is the first time that Afridi has held the No. 1 ranking in any format.Full rankings tables

Afridi’s move to the top comes on the back of a three-wicket haul against Bangladesh, where he finished with 3 for 21 in nine overs. During the course of the game, he also reached 100 wickets in ODIs in just his 51st innings, making him the third-quickest to the landmark and the quickest fast bowler just ahead of Mitchell Starc. With Babar Azam holding on to the top spot on the batting front, Pakistan now have two players occupying the No. 1 position in the batting and bowling format.Babar’s lead is only a slender one – by two rating points – with Shubman Gill close on his heels. Babar has only managed 216 runs in seven innings, averaging 30.85 with three half-centuries. Gill also hasn’t set the tournament alight, managing 104 runs in four innings at 26.00 with a solitary half-century.Rohit Sharma, meanwhile rose three spots to enter the top five of the rankings following a stellar start to his ODI World Cup, while David Warner, who is currently second on the run-getters list with 413 in six innings at 68.83 rose one position to fourth. On the bowling front, there were gains for Kuldeep Yadav and Mujeeb Ur Rahman as they slotted into the seventh and eighth positions in the rankings chart. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan continues to lead the allrounders list.

Netherlands out to claim another scalp as Australia look to build momentum

Australia looks set to welcome back Travis Head from injury while the Netherlands need some runs from their top-order

Alex Malcolm24-Oct-20232:12

Would Netherlands rather beat India or Australia at the World Cup? We asked Scott Edwards

Big picture: The shared history of Australia and NetherlandsThere has long been a connection between Netherlands and Australian cricket. It is perhaps not quite as strong as South Africa’s connection to the current Dutch team. But their captain Scott Edwards is an Australian citizen, having grown up in Melbourne and played second XI cricket for Victoria. He has introduced a Netherlands team song that is a shameless rebrand of the song of his favourite Australian Football League club Richmond. From Edwards to former Dutch coach Ryan Campbell, to Tom Cooper, Timm van der Gugten, Michael Swart and Dirk Nannes, among others, plenty of Australian domestic players have had an impact on Netherlands cricket. But there will be no love lost in Delhi on Wednesday. Netherlands are gunning for another big scalp, having already taken down South Africa and potentially missed an opportunity against Sri Lanka. Australia are looking to continue their momentum. They will not be taking the Netherlands lightly, but they would love a statement win having been tested at times against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. For all the links between to the two nations as far as players and coaches are concerned, Australia and Netherlands have only met twice in ODI cricket. Both matches were at World Cups, in 2003 and 2007, and Australia were ruthless, claiming big wins while tinkering with their line-up. In fact, nobody could beat them in either of those tournaments. These two sides did meet in a rain-affected warm-up game in Thiruvananthapuram prior to this World Cup. Mitchell Starc claimed a hat-trick in a game Australia did not take seriously at all. Steven Smith and Josh Inglis opened the batting with Alex Carey at three and Mitchell Marsh did not bat but instead opened the bowling while Marnus Labuschagne also bowled four overs and picked up the wicket of Edwards.Australia won’t take this game as lightly with coach Andrew McDonald confirming on Monday that they would not be resting any of their players. They know the Dutch will be well planned and the dual spin threat of Aryan Dutt in the powerplay against possibly two left-handed openers in David Warner and Travis Head if he is passed fit, plus Roelof van der Merwe against Australia’s vulnerable middle-order could certainly cause problems. Netherlands’ biggest challenge will be getting top-order runs. But Australia’s new-ball bowlers have not taken a powerplay wicket in the last three games, and Delhi has been an excellent batting strip.Form guideAustralia WWLLW (last five ODIs, most recent first)Netherlands LWLLL1:48

Does Smith have a weakness against the ball coming in?

In the spotlight: Smith and O’DowdSteven Smith was considered vital to Australia’s chances in this World Cup given his experience in India and his prowess against spin. But Australia’s long-time No. 3, who is set to play his 150th ODI against Netherlands, is battling for form in ODI cricket this year and now may well find himself pushed to No.4 with the return of Head. Smith is averaging just 23.22 in ODIs this year from nine innings, including three ducks, and striking at just 81.64. His move to No. 4 may not help his search to find some form. He has only batted there once since the 2019 World Cup and that was against Pakistan in the last match, having slid one spot due to the promotion of Glenn Maxwell because of the game situation. He has batted No. 3 in his previous 29 ODI innings. He averages just 34.31 across 24 career innings at No. 4 compared to 52.60 at No. 3. His strike-rate is slightly higher at No. 4, but nonetheless, it is not his favoured spot.In a World Cup where the openers have dominated across the board to this point, Netherlands’ top two have simply not got going. Max O’Dowd has really struggled, making just 55 runs in four innings at a strike-rate of just 57.89. He has battled to get off strike facing 72 dot balls out of 95 in total, with 38 of his 55 runs coming in boundaries and just 11 singles. He did not play any List A cricket between the World Cup qualifiers in July and the World Cup itself, with his only match practice coming in Netherlands club cricket, some of which was played on artificial pitches. It is a huge ask to jump from that to facing some of the incredible new ball pairings he has so far this tournament and the task only gets tougher against Starc and Josh Hazlewood on Wednesday. But the Netherlands need some runs from their openers if they are to put pressure on Australia.Team news: Will Head play?Head arrived in Delhi on Saturday having been at home in Adelaide for Australia’s first four matches of the tournament, nursing his broken hand. He was optimistic he could play on Wednesday after a net session on Saturday. He faced bowlers for the first time on Monday and got through the session. If he plays he is set to open alongside Warner which will break up the in-form Warner-Marsh pairing. Labuschagne would be the likely batter to make way.Australia (probable): 1 David Warner, 2 Travis Head, 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Josh Inglis (wk), 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Marcus Stoinis, 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Adam ZampaTravis Head is back with the Australia squad•Getty ImagesThe Netherlands look set to stick with the same combination that beat South Africa and tested Sri Lanka.Netherlands (probable): 1 Vikramjit Singh, 2 Max O’Dowd, 3 Colin Ackermann, 4 Bas de Leede, 5 Teja Nidamanuru, 6 Scott Edwards (capt & wk), 7 Sybrand Engelbrecht, 8 Roelof van der Merwe, 9 Logan van Beek, 10 Aryan Dutt, 11 Paul van MeekerenPitch and conditions: Another sweltering dayThe three games in Delhi thus far in this World Cup have produced two very different results, although the common thread is that the side batting first has won easily. South Africa piled up 428 against Sri Lanka and won although Sri Lanka made 326 in reply. India galloped to their 273-run against Afghanistan, who then defended 286 easily against England on the back of a masterful bowling performance by their spinners. It will be warm in Delhi and the air quality will be poor.Stats and trivia: Starc on the prowl Starc (55) needs two wickets to go past Lasith Malinga (56) to third all-time on the ODI World Cup wicket-takers list. Glenn McGrath leads with 71 and Muttiah Muralidaran is second with 68. Australia are the only team to have gone wicketless three times in the first powerplay in this World Cup. Only Bangladesh (38.90%) have had a higher percentage of runs scored by Nos. 5,6 and 7 in this World Cup than the Netherlands (35.82%)

Stokes not ready for 'the easy way out' by leaving World Cup for knee surgery

Ben Stokes never countenanced the possibility of leaving the World Cup early to bring his impending knee surgery forwards, despite England’s Test tour to India looming in two-and-a-half months’ time. Going home, he said, would have been “the easy way out”.Stokes revealed before England’s 33-run defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad last week that he will have an operation later this month in a bid to solve the chronic left-knee issue which has seen him play as a specialist batter since the start of July. He expects his rehabilitation to take between five and seven weeks, leaving a short turnaround before his Test team tour to India in January. The first of the five Tests begins on January 25 in Hyderabad. But even after their elimination was confirmed, Stokes said he did not consider heading home ahead of England’s final two group fixtures. “Just because things haven’t gone as we’d wanted, there were never any thoughts about leaving early, taking the easy way out,” he said. “We came here as part of a team and we will leave here as one.”Related

  • After 29 days of doom and gloom, England taste sweet victory

Jos Buttler, England’s captain, said that there had not been a conversation about the possibility of Stokes leaving. “It’s not his style at all: he’s here to play in the World Cup. He wants to be here and it’s important for us to try and qualify for that Champions Trophy. He wants to make sure we try and achieve that.”Stokes significantly improved England’s prospect of qualifying for that tournament in 18 months’ time on Wednesday evening, hitting 108 off 84 balls against Netherlands in Pune to put them seventh in the group stage heading into the final round of fixtures. It was his maiden World Cup century, in what is likely to be his penultimate World Cup appearance.Having reversed his retirement for this tournament, Stokes is highly unlikely to feature in ODIs after England’s final group game against Pakistan in Kolkata on Saturday. In any case, that will be his last 50-over match for at least 10 months: his surgery will rule him out of England’s tour to the Caribbean next month, and they do not play another ODI until September 2024.Stokes was non-committal over his future plans on Wednesday night, saying that he had “no idea” whether Saturday will be his final ODI. Rob Key, England’s managing director, is in Kolkata ahead of the Pakistan game. “I’m sure there will be a conversation [with him],” Stokes said. “But I don’t know when that will be.”After missing England’s first three games at the World Cup with a hip injury sustained doing lunges in a hotel gym in Guwahati, Stokes said that his physical fitness improved over the course of the tournament. “I have used the time between games to give myself a better opportunity [of recovering well] after the surgery,” he said.”All the work in the gym doesn’t compare to what you go through out there [on the pitch]. I’m looking forward to getting it sorted and not having to worry like I have these past 18 months. From a physical point of view, I’m better off than when I first got out here. But physical fitness and cricket fitness are two different things.”
