Unlike Reece James: £50m Chelsea flop may never play for England again

For Chelsea supporters with a vested interest in the England national team, this international break was a great deal more appealing to them.

That’s because Thomas Tuchel, a man who once occupied the Stamford Bridge dugout, is now in the Wembley hot seat.

He’s the head honcho of the England side, the man tasked with bringing football home. In America no less, in 2026, the German will hope to end 60 years of hurt.

If he’s to win the tournament, then a number of Chelsea players could well be key.

Cole Palmer missed the latest camp through injury but will no doubt play a big role next year having scored England’s only goal in last summer’s European Championship final. Doesn’t that feel like a long time ago now?

Much has changed for the Three Lions since then. Gareth Southgate departed his role, Lee Carsley took over on an interim basis and now Tuchel is at the helm.

He’s already sprung a few surprises, too, notably calling up Reece James.

Reece James' stunning England return in numbers

When Tuchel announced his first England squad nearly two weeks ago now, there were a few shocks.

This was perhaps a moment to mark a changing of the guard, a moment to get rid of the old and bring through the new.

Tuchel-England-squad

Well, the head coach decided to merge the two ideologies together, combining youth with experience.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, Arsenal’s exuberant 18-year-old made his debut and scored during the 2-0 win over Albania but even his inclusion wasn’t the most surprising.

That honour went to Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker who both now ply their trade on the continent with Ajax and AC Milan respectively.

Rivalling Walker for a place on the right-hand side of the defence was none other than James.

The Blues skipper has only played 14 times this season as he has his load managed following a string of injuries but Tuchel knows him well, having managed the 25-year-old on 74 occasions. For context, no other manager has used James more.

Speaking before the game with Albania, the boss was confident the full-back would stand up to the task.

Well, he certainly stepped up alright. Handed a rare England start in their 3-0 win over Latvia on Monday evening, it was James who opened the scoring.

The hosts won a free-kick on the edge of the area and it was the Chelsea captain who stepped up to take. Step up he did, curling a delicious set-piece past the goalkeeper.

While that goal will no doubt give Tuchel the confidence to select James again, it wasn’t just the attacking phases of the game that he impressed in.

The defender only misplaced one pass all night, had a whopping 118 touches, completed two tackles and made two interceptions. Forget about the level of opposition, it really was a complete performance.

However, while James caught the eye, the rest of Chelsea’s England contingent shouldn’t be too confident of a call-up next time around.

Chelsea's England hopefuls

There are a number of England prospects in the current Chelsea side, ranking from that man James to the likes of Jadon Sancho, Levi Colwill and Noni Madueke, somebody who actually assisted a goal during the Lee Carsley era.

Noni Madueke

While it wouldn’t be out of the realms of fantasy to suggest all three could be at the World Cup next year if they find form, one Chelsea player who is seriously unlikely to be there is Ben Chilwell.

The £200k-per-week left-back could have been the answer to their lack of options on the left side of the backline but the fact of the matter is there’s far more promising options coming through.

Take the aforementioned Lewis-Skelly for instance, take two former Chelsea boys in Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall too.

Both Lewis-Skelly and Livramento were in Tuchel’s first squad but Hall was unfortunate to miss out having sustained a season-ending injury a few weeks ago.

So, there’s two left-backs Chilwell would have to usurp and despite his Chelsea connections, someone like Luke Shaw who was at the Euros is probably still in their mind.

So, we’re up to three left-backs and if you count Colwill and Dan Burns’ ability to feature in that position, you’re looking at five players standing in the way of Chilwell. Add players like Tyrick Mitchell and Leif Davis to the mix and it looks quite bleak for the former Leicester defender’s hopes of an inclusion.

Performance in Numbers

Want data and stats? Football FanCast’s Performance in Numbers series provides you with the latest match analysis from across Europe.

So, with Chilwell quite rightly not being called up for the matches with Albania and Latvia, it looks as though he’s already played his last game in an England shirt.

He’s played just 45 minutes of football for Chelsea this term and hasn’t exactly done a lot since a winter loan move to Crystal Palace was formalised, featuring in only five games and yet to start in the Premier League.

Barring a severe improvement in his injury history and game time, it’s unlikely we’ll see him in a Three Lions jersey again.

Aged 28 and once valued at £50m, that feels like a sad sentence to be writing.

Man City are brewing Pep's new Busquets in their young "Rodri back-up"

One of Manchester City’s premium January signings was midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The former Barcelona star, who is a product of the esteemed La Masia academy, made the move to the Etihad Stadium for £50m from Portuguese side FC Porto.

So far, the 23-year-old is only a short way into his Citizens career. He has only played eight times so far for Pep Guardiola’s side, starting six times in the Premier League and Champions League.

It was the latter competition in which he scored his first, and to date, only goal for City, although it was a consolation strike against Real Madrid.

Playing as a number six so far for City, Gonzalez was partly signed to help ease the blow of Rodri’s absence, who is still sidelined with injury.

Based on the statistics above, he’s done a pretty good job of covering.

The latest on Rodri's injury recovery at Man City

It has been a tough season for City on the pitch, which has not been helped by the fact that Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, a key player in the middle of the park, has been out injured. The Spaniard picked up a serious knee ligament injury against Arsenal in September and is yet to return.

However, at the start of March, there was some positive news to come out of the City camp surrounding the midfielder’s return to action. Guardiola said he was unsure if Rodri would make it back before the end of the season, but did not rule it out, saying “maybe it’s going to happen”.

Incredibly, the Spain international, who won Euro 2024 last summer, has already returned to training on grass. City’s official account posted a video on social media at the end of February of their star man sprinting and training with a ball at his feet.

So, there are encouraging signs that the Spain international will be back before too long. Even if he doesn’t play in the Premier League this season, then perhaps he will feature in the Club World Cup over the summer.

Either way, there is no doubt he has been a big miss for City. Perhaps Guardiola wishes they had kept one player at the club over the summer, who could have helped City in Rodri’s absence.

Manchester City's in-house Rodri alternative

City have plenty of exciting youngsters on their books, so finding a way to fit them all in the squad is not necessarily easy.

One of the players they loaned out in the summer was midfielder Maximo Perrone, who could have been a perfect Rodri alternative.

Maximo Perrone

The 22-year-old midfielder has spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Como, managed by legendary midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Playing as a number six, Perrone has featured in 18 games this season, grabbing two assists.

He does have an eye for goal, too, as he showed in pre-season. The Argentine youngster scored for City in one of their games, slotting home from close range and showcasing his ability going forward.

Perrone has featured twice for City so far in competitive action, with both appearances coming in their treble-winning season, 2022/23. He played in the FA Cup and Premier League, before going on loan to Las Palmas the following season.

In Spain, the youngster was impressive. He completed the most progressive passes per game by a U21 player across the big five leagues in Europe, with 8.41. That is according to Wyscout via football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

This term, his numbers from FBref are also impressive. He is impressive on the ball, completing 55.69 passes per 90 minutes on average, ranking him in the top 11% of Serie A midfielders. He also averages 2.86 tackles and interceptions each game. It’s easy to see, therefore, why he’s allegedly modelled his game on one of Pep’s favourite ever players; Sergio Busquets.

Football analyst Ben Mattinson said that City should have “used Perrone to manage Rodri’s minutes”, labelling him the “ideal Rodri back-up”, which is backed up well by the stats. He is quality on the ball, which is demanded of him in Guardiola’s side and is defensively astute, too.

Looking ahead to next season, the Citizens might well look to integrate the youngster into the side, to help take the burden off Rodri and provide an excellent alternative.

Nottingham Forest now make first move to sign "outstanding" £34m striker

Nottingham Forest have now held talks over a summer deal for an “outstanding” striker who is expected to move to the Premier League this summer, according to a report.

Forest pushing for the Champions League

Forest have had some tricky fixtures in recent weeks, meaning their form has wobbled slightly heading into the business end of the season, but they got their Champions League push back on track with a statement victory yesterday afternoon.

The Tricky Trees dispatched of Manchester City 1-0 at the City Ground, with Callum Hudson-Odoi netting a late winner to move four points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side, solidifying themselves in third place with just 10 games left to play.

As such, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side should be well placed to attract some top players in the summer transfer window, and a recent report has now revealed they have now made their first move to sign a highly sought-after striker.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 7, 2025

According to CaughtOffside, Nottingham Forest have now opened talks with the representatives of AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham, who is expected to end his stint in Serie A and return to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Neither Roma nor loan club Milan are keen on keeping Abraham beyond the summer, meaning he is likely to move back to England, where a number of clubs have now made contact over a potential deal.

AC Milan'sTammyAbrahamreacts after the match

Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton and West Ham United have also opened talks over a summer move, so there could be fierce competition for the Englishman’s signature this summer.

The 27-year-old is said to be open to a move to England, but he would like to join a top club, which could give Forest the edge in the transfer battle should they go all the way and secure qualification for the Champions League.

"Outstanding" Abraham has proven himself in the Premier League

Football writer Henry Winter lauded the forward as “outstanding” during his time with Roma, and he has also impressed in the Premier League in the past, most notably in the 2019/20 season.

The former Chelsea man netted 15 league goals for the Blues in that campaign before completing a £34m move to Roma in 2021, where he has also impressed at times, particularly in his debut season.

The London-born striker was arguably at his best in the 2021/22 campaign, during which he scored 17 times in Serie A, while also bagging nine goals in the Conference League en route to Roma’s triumph.

The only cause for concern will be the fact Milan and Roma have no plans to keep the forward beyond the summer given that he hasn’t exactly been prolific in recent times, netting just two league goals this season.

However, should Abraham be available for a cut-price fee, it is definitely worth pursuing a move this summer considering his previous exploits at the top level in England and Italy.

Man City hold meeting with father of £100m ace; huge wage increase on offer

Manchester City officials have now held a transfer meeting with the father of a “special” player, according to a new report.

Man City planning midfield overhaul

The Blues were very busy in January with many new players arriving at the Etihad, but despite that, it is expected that City will be rather active again in the summer transfer window. Pep Guardiola’s focus could be on his midfield, as the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Mateo Kovacic are being linked with moves away.

Man City and Pep are now ready to go after a player they have been admiring for a while.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 25, 2025

City’s midfield is indeed ageing, so it makes sense for the Blues to freshen it up and bring more energy into the middle of the park. There have been several midfielders linked with a move to the Etihad, with Florian Plettenberg reporting that City have Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga on their transfer list ahead of the summer. The Blues are keeping a close eye on him, but the Frenchman has yet to decide his long-term future.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk are reporting that City are looking to make an offer to sign Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan. It was originally stated that the Premier League champions would want to pay £42 million to secure his transfer, but it is now believed they are willing to go further and pay £50 million.

The midfield links don’t stop there, as Florian Wirtz remains a player City want, but may have to pay over £100 million to get the deal completed.

Man City hold meeting with the father of Real Madrid star Rodrygo

Camavinga is not the only Real Madrid player to be on City’s radar heading into the summer, as according to a report from Spain, Man City have held talks with Rodrygo’s father over a possible move to the Etihad.

The report claims that the meeting between representatives was held in the last two or three weeks. During the discussions, City made two offers to the Brazilian’s father, one being his son would receive a huge wage increase should he move to Manchester.

The second offer was that they would grant Rodrygo the freedom to play on the left-hand side of their attack, which is impossible for him to do now at Madrid, given the presence of Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé.

It is not stated whether City are now willing to make an offer to Madrid for the attacker or if Rodrygo has decided to leave the European champions, but the Blues and Pep are obviously keen on a potential deal if they think it can happen.

The 24-year-old is contracted to Real Madrid until the summer of 2028, and it is believed it could take as much as £100 million to sign the player, as that is how much Liverpool are also willing to pay as they eye a replacement for Mo Salah. Rodrygo may be in the shadow of Vinicius and Mbappé, but Carlo Ancelotti is still a fan of the Brazilian, as he dubbed him a “special striker”.

“He is a special striker; he can play in all positions. He is fast, smart and effective one on one. The learning is over. He is a Real Madrid player for all purposes.”

Intermittent rain expected in Ahmedabad on Monday evening

The cut-off time for a full match to take place is 9.35 PM IST, while officials can wait till 12.06 AM for a five-over game

Ahmedabad dawned bright and sunny on Monday, the reserve day of the IPL 2023 final between defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. However, the met department and local papers predict intermittent rain between 4pm and 10pm.The outfield that bore the brunt of a thunderstorm that lashed the city for four hours on Sunday evening was described as “bone dry” by a member of the broadcasting crew that began setting up for a re-run. There has been no rain since 10.45pm on Sunday night.A GCA official explained a five-over contest on Sunday wouldn’t have been impossible to achieve, but a fresh final is the “best-case scenario” for both teams after the match officials felt it may have been “touch and go” to get the ground ready for a truncated shootout. Another official said there was a long debate on the possible risk of injuries given the amount of water that had seeped underneath.Related

Live Report – Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings, Ahmedabad

IPL 2023 comes full circle as wily CSK face defending champs Titans – on reserve day

The playing conditions remain the same as they were on Sunday night. The cut-off time for a full match to start is 9.35pm. For a five-overs-a-side match, officials can wait till 12.06am before starting play. The final option to determine a winner is a Super Over shootout. The cut-off time to start that is 1am. The playing conditions say that if even a Super Over is not possible, Gujarat Titans will be declared champions since they finished higher in the points table in the league stage – they finished No. 1, with CSK at No. 2.As such, the drainage at the Narendra Modi Stadium has been set up in accordance with “modern standards” and machinery. A similar downpour on Friday evening, albeit for just 45 minutes, allowed for Qualifier 2 between Titans and Mumbai Indians begin within 40 minutes of the rain abating. Two super soppers had swung into action even before the rain had completely stopped to ensure the mop-up operations didn’t take long.

The ground staff, ESPNcricinfo understands, have been rigorously trained to ensure “maximum ground coverage in least possible time”. This was in view on Sunday night when there was a brief 20-minute window where it appeared as if the game would start. Only a while earlier, parts of the outfield had been inundated with puddles with water seeping underneath the covers near the square. The possibility of a full game means the fans’ excitement hasn’t dimmed – another full house is expected – but hotel prices and airfares out of Ahmedabad had shot through the roof. All direct flights out of Ahmedabad to Chennai had been sold out for Tuesday, with connecting flights priced at INR 28,000 for a sector that charges INR 5000 on an average. Several CSK players, especially the overseas players, who were scheduled to fly out of the city in the wee hours on Monday, have been rescheduled for a later departure on Tuesday.Hundreds of fans had gathered outside the stadium hoping to get hands on tickets that several others were hoping to sell in lieu of being unable to cancel their Monday departures. This has led to chaotic scenes with heavy police presence along the water-logged streets outside the ground, similar to how it was late on Sunday night as thousands of fans were forced to wade through at least 3km in ankle-deep waters before getting any kind of public transport outside of the Ahmedabad Metro that had already been running to capacity. The local authorities have been instructed to ensure fans don’t have to undergo similar hassles on Monday night, with a number of feeder buses and smoother checkpoints set up for entry. Fans who couldn’t pick up their physical tickets in exchange of the online ones on match days have been permitted to do so at multiple locations in the city to prevent further queues and logjams outside the venue as authorities look to clear up the venue in time for Monday’s re-run.

Bell-Drummond tolls for Hampshire as Kent win first in six

Somehow the Spitfires are still fighting for this Vitality Blast

Vithushan Ehantharajah09-Jun-2023The general mood around the Spitfire Ground was one of contentment heading into the visit of Hampshire, if only because it was Friday night and the sun was shining. Five defeats on the bounce, most recently here against Essex three days ago, had created a palpable apathy around a Kent white-ball team who, on paper at least, spark joy.Within six balls, apathy had turned to hope. James Vince, one of the tournament’s form players with 406 runs from seven innings coming into tonight, had been seen off for a golden duck, off stump taken for a walk by Fred Klassen. A few hours later, they were celebrating a first win in six, toppling a target of 177 with three deliveries to spare. Somehow, they’re still fighting for this Vitality Blast. For that, they owe thanks to Daniel Bell-Drummond and an 89 off 55 deliveries that got the run chase off to fine start, then assumed the responsibility to take it close enough to the end to walk off satisfied. Dismayed, too, as he chipped Nathan Ellis to Vince at mid off. But the remaining 18 runs had 20 deliveries to work with. Skipper Sam Billings whittled that down with a brace of reverse sweeps for four, before Jack Leaning rolled his wrists on a short ball from Chris Wood to send the crowd into raptures. The vibe of Canterbury, even the expectation, dialled up with Vince’s dismissal. The Hampshire captain sold it well, staring in the vague area Klassen’s delivery had pitched and deviated enough to leave him totally flummoxed. When Klassen repeated the trick to leave Toby Albert off-stump-less in his next over, making it 17 for 2, the crowd were locked in. Kent had decided to bowl first this time, and things were beginning to go their way.A stand of 85 between Ben McDermott and Joe Weatherley, ultimately, provided the meat on the bones of Hampshire’s innings. The end of the Power Play – 43 for 2 – merely heightened their intent, particularly McDermott, who needed just 13 deliveries to take his score from 19 (where it was at the end of six overs) to a 27-ball half-century.The aggression was solely on the Australian, though he quickly gave up a run to the striker’s end when Weatherley called late after flicking straight to Klassen inside the circle at fine leg. This time, the Dutchman missed the stumps, and McDermott then lifted Grant Stewart over square leg to rub it in a little. An attempt to carve the next delivery over cover found Tawanda Mueyeye lurking in the deep.It was from that point the visitors spluttered. Considering they were 102 for 2 midway through the 11th over, only adding 75 off the remaining 57 deliveries on a quick-scoring ground was an error from an experienced batting line-up, against an attack shorn of confidence. There was willing, of course. Ross Whiteley and James Fuller, two middle-order bruisers who would not look out of place manning the doors at the rowdier establishments on Canterbury high street, failed to impose themselves, with 11 off 12 and 4 off 5 respectively.Weatherley was willing, his own half-century (a second of the season) taking 35 deliveries, though found himself wallowing at the non-striker’s end while the big hitters failed to find their feet. Weatherley’s attempt to manufacture a six led to a steepling catch brilliantly taken by Stewart running around from short fine leg to square leg for Richardson’s only wicket, returning the favour after the reverse had ended Whiteley’s stay. Liam Dawson’s 25 lifted Hampshire to par, but the fact he struck the last three boundaries of the innings across the final 19 deliveries of the innings – the last of which, a six carved over point, came second ball of the final over – spoke of misjudgements of sorts.Kent’s openers have been beacons amid the gloom, and they skipped to an opening stand of 59. That it ended in the final over of the powerplay looked a point of contention. Tawanda Muyeye looked bemused at being given leg before to the precocious John Turner, though the batter might not have been the best judge considering he was rolling over following an attempted lap.The 22-year-old was lucky to have made it that far. Who knows what might have happened had James Fuller held onto a relatively simple chase to remove the opener on 5 and in turn, have Kent 9 for 1. That error was compounded when Fuller’s first over was blitzed for 21, courtesy of a brace of sixes sandwiching a four from Bell-Drummond.That Bell-Drummond was Kent’s leading run-scorer with just 158 from six innings going into this match was as much an indication of the lack of support down the order as his own profligacy. Even though he has stayed true to a domineering approach, standing a little squarer in this format and chocking the handle a little lower to flick and whip a little easier, there was a sense he might need to do things differently. Perhaps turn the attacking dial down a notch and spend a little longer at the crease as one of the few in nick.As it turns out, there was no compromise to be made. Why not both? He rocked back and forth, carving boundaries on both sides of the wicket, before standing firm and crunching the usually unhittable Dawson over wide mid on for his fourth six to take the rate under a run a ball (28 off 30).There was scope for a cock-up. When Billings lost his off stump to Ellis in the penultimate over, which reaped just two runs for Kent, Hampshire figured they would prey on a team who haven’t closed well. Vince ramped up the anxiety with as many as three fielding changes before Chris Wood ran in for the first delivery of the final over.It almost – almost – produced, with Mason Crane narrowly missing a run out of Leaning after Jordan Cox had tipped and run to midwicket. Alas, Kent held their nerve for a first win in six to hand Hampshire their first loss in as many.

Charalampos Kostoulas: Why Brighton are paying £34m and beating Real Madrid & Man Utd to Olympiacos' teenage 'Babistuta'

The teenage forward has made a remarkable start to his career in Greece, and he's set to take his talents to the Premier League

Greece is not a country that iswell known for producing superstar footballers. Even their European Championship-winning squad of 2004 lacked big names, with former Leicester City midfielder Theodoros Zagorakis and ex-Werder Bremen striker Angelos Charisteas among those who enjoyed fine careers in their own right, but never managed to earn global recognition.

But Charalampos Kostoulas is one of several players of this golden generation capable of breaking the mould. His meteoric rise to prominence at Olympiacos has captured the imagination of the public in his homeland, and he has been described as a "marvel of nature" by the club's sporting director, Darko Kovacevic.

His exploits so far in his career have attracted the attention of Real Madrid, Arsenal and Manchester United, but it's wonderkid factory Brighton who are set to snap him up for a cool £34 million (€40.2m/$45.8m).

If he stays on his current trajectory, Kostoulas will get the chance to strut his stuff in the Premier League with the Seagulls sooner rather than later. So without further ado, GOAL is here to bring you everything you need to know about Brighton's latest recruit…

  • Where it all began

Football was always in Kostoulas' blood. His father, Athanasios, also played for Olympiacos as a defender, and racked up over 300 top-flight appearances across his 21-year career, while also winning two caps for the Greece national team.

Charalampos and his older brother, Konstantinos, both aimed to follow in their father's footsteps, and they started their journey at AS Agia Anna, a mountain village club located in central Greece. Charalampos eventually got his big chance to shine at the age of 12, when he was invited to play at a tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany for PAOK Athens.

The talented forward seized the moment with both hands, scoring 10 goals, which prompted PAOK to try and draft him into their youth ranks. Olympiacos hijacked the move, though, swooping in to sign Charalampos Konstantinos in order to keep the sons of one of their former players out of the clutches of their arch-rivals.

That decision soon paid off for Olympiacos, as Charalampos fired the club's Under-15s to the league title in 2021-22 with 16 goals in 15 appearances, and he was rewarded with his first professional contract. He registered another 12 goal involvements as Olympiacos became Greek Super League U17 champions the following season, while also getting the chance to make his debut for the club's B team at just 15 years, seven months, and 25 days old.

  • The big break

After becoming the youngest player to play professionally in Olympiacos' entire history, Kostoulas became a regular for the reserves, which gave him the opportunity to make his mark in the UEFA Youth League. Incredibly, Olympiacos ended up clinching the 2023-24 trophy, becoming the first Greek side to ever win a UEFA club competition, one month before the senior team's triumph in the Conference League.

Kostoulas played a vital role, too, scoring five goals in eight games, including one in their 3-1 upset victory over Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. Olympiacos head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar was impressed, and promoted Kostoulas to the first team ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, while Konstantinos was sent out on loan to Rio Ave.

Konstantinos was deemed not to be ready for the step up yet, but Mendilibar felt his younger brother could add depth to Olympiacos' attack as they sought to build on their historic European success. Kostoulas wasn't made to wait for his debut either, as he started the club's opening Greek Super League game of the season against Volos.

There was no instant impact, though. Kostoulas was subbed at half-time in that 2-0 victory, and didn't make the squad in three of Olympiacos' next four league games as it took time for him to adjust to the intensity of top-flight football.

But on matchday 11, everything clicked. Kostoulas headed in the opening goal in a huge 3-2 win at PAOK, making history as the youngest player to ever score a league goal for Olympiacos at 17 years, five months, and 11 days. That dream moment reignited the fire in Kostoulas, who has since established himself as a key member of Mendilibar's squad.

    How it's going

Olympiacos failed in their bid to take home an unprecedented treble in 2024-25, but they did secure a league and cup double to keep spirits high in the city of Piraeus for the club's 100th anniversary. Veteran striker Ayoub El Kaabi earned most of the plaudits – he wound up with 34 goals and assists in all competitions – but Kostoulas provided the 31-year-old with invaluable support in the final third.

Kostoulas, who is also now a Greece U21 international, racked up seven goals in 22 Greek Super League games, including the clincher against Panathinaikos in their first play-off win, and was one of the standout players in Olympiacos' Europa League victories over Porto and Qarabag earlier in the campaign. He shared the limelight with academy graduate Christos Mouzakitis, but it feels like Kostoulas has a higher ceiling than his deep-lying team-mate given his capacity to be a match-winner.

That was the case even on the occasions Kostoulas had to make do with a substitute role. He scored both goals from the bench to give Olympiacos a 2-1 home win over Aris Saloniki, including a dramatic 96th-minute winner, which earned him special praise from Mendilibar.

"Kostoulas didn’t just score – he created opportunities and drove the game forward," said the Olympiacos boss. "He was on target, something we generally lacked."

    Biggest strengths

Standing at just over six foot tall, Kostoulas is a physically intimidating forward with a frightening turn of pace. Only two players in the Greek Super League have been clocked at a higher speed than Kostoulas' top mark of 36kmph, and he's almost unstoppable in full flow.

The 18-year-old also possesses a natural eye for goal, which has seen him dubbed 'Babistuta' – a nod to former Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta. He's a clinical finisher who can score with both feet, but is also a surprisingly nimble link-man who thrives with his back to goal.

Kostoulas' passing is crisp and incisive, while off the ball he is always looking to get into little pockets of space behind enemy lines. Olympiacos could always go long with Kostoulas in the team, too, because he very rarely loses any aerial duels and has knack for timing runs into the box.
