Alex Hales given hope of England recall as Liam Livingstone earns T20I call-up

Liam Livingstone has been recalled to England’s T20I squad for their five-match series against India next month, while Alex Hales – still out of favour for now – has received the first hint of a thawing in attitude from the England camp, following his stellar returns for Sydney Thunder in the recent Big Bash. With the next T20 World Cup due to be staged in India in October and November, the upcoming T20I series is being seen as a chance to fine-tune England’s plans ahead of a tournament in which they finished as runners-up five years ago, and which has been earmarked as a significant opportunity for more ICC silverware following their success in the 2019 World Cup.For that reason, Hales’ absence remains a significant talking point, given that he has arguably been the outstanding batsman on the T20 franchise circuit for the past 12 months. He amassed 543 runs at a strike-rate of 161.60 in the recent Big Bash, more than any other batsman, and also made the competition’s highest score, a blistering innings of 110 from 56 balls against local rivals and the eventual champions, Sydney Sixers. In England’s eyes, however, Hales has not yet been forgiven for his misdemeanours in the lead-up to the 2019 World Cup – he was jettisoned from the squad on the eve of the tournament after failing two tests for recreational drug use, and has effectively been blackballed by England’s captain, Eoin Morgan, who claimed he had shown “a complete disregard” for the team’s values.Alex Hales swings into the leg side•Getty Images

Speaking on the subject of Hales’ future England prospects, his BBL coach Shane Bond told Australia’s Daily Telegraph last week that he was being “punished way too much”, adding that he had “matured” since his World Cup axing, and that the ECB’s failure to communicate with the Thunder management on the subject of his behaviour was a failure of “due diligence”.And while it is understood that Hales has still not received any official communication from the ECB, Ed Smith, the national selector, hinted that he might yet be given a chance to build some bridges with his former team-mates and management, when the squads gather ahead of the English home season later this year.”We’re always looking at ways to consider getting players who aren’t currently in the active squad to come along to training days, perhaps in the run-up to a series,” Smith said. “It’s an opportunity to keep growing and expanding that group of players, and keep building those relationships with players who are just outside the actual squad, but that we know are good cricketers. It’s something we might consider in the English summer.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

In the meantime, Livingstone has been given the chance ahead of Hales to challenge for a place in the T20 World Cup squad. He has been on the fringes of England selection for the past year, having been called into the ODI squads for last year’s series against Ireland and South Africa, which was called off in December due to Covid concerns. In between whiles he was a reserve in England’s T20I series against Pakistan in August. However, he has not added to his England caps since making 16 runs in two T20Is against South Africa in 2017, almost four years ago now. His final appearance, in fact, coincided with the debut of Dawid Malan, the ICC’s current No.1-ranked T20I batsman, who made 78 from 44 balls to set up a series-sealing win. That could now change after an impressive Big Bash campaign for Perth Scorchers, in which he amassed 426 runs in 14 matches, and also chipped in with five wickets with his legspin. Notably, he forged a powerful opening partnership with England’s incumbent opener, Jason Roy, and saved his best for the Challenger final, with 77 from 39 balls to eliminate Brisbane Heat.Related

His inclusion comes ahead of another strong challenger from the BBL, James Vince, whose back-to-back 90s sealed the title for Sixers earlier this month, and joins an otherwise unchanged roster of 15 names who completed a 3-0 clean sweep in England’s last T20I campaign, in South Africa before Christmas.”We see [Livingstone and Vince] in slightly different roles,” Smith said. “James had a very good Big Bash and that was noted. But Liam brings some other things too with his bowling, and in terms of getting into squads for major tournaments where space is naturally very limited, sometimes having those extra strings to your bow is a route into the squad. So it’s an exciting time for Liam, he had a really good Big Bash. He’s a dynamic cricketer – a good fielder, bowler and exciting batsman. It’s a great opportunity for him.”Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood, who were rested from the ongoing Chennai leg of England’s tour of India, are back in the squad alongside Jos Buttler, who flew home in the wake of England’s 227-run win in the first Test. The only other changes are in the identities of England’s reserve players – with Tom Banton the notable absentee following his withdrawal from this winter’s Big Bash due to Covid bubble fatigue. Banton, however, was a marquee signing for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League, and can now expect to play a full season when the tournament gets underway next week. The T20I squad will depart for India on February 26, and will play all five of their matches in Ahmedabad. A separate squad for the subsequent three-match ODI series will be named in due course.England T20I squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, Mark WoodReserves: Jake Ball, Matt Parkinson

Ex-Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca punched referee Hamil Umut Meler in the face after a 1-1 draw with Caykur Rizespor in the Super Lig in December 2023. Now, according to the Associated Press, a court in Ankara convicted Koca of "intentionally wounding a public official" and sentenced him to three years and seven months in jail.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The incident caused outrage across the world, with the Turkish Football Federation suspending all league games for several weeks. Koca resigned as club president soon after the incident, which left the referee with a small fracture near his eye. The court stated he was also convicted of threatening the official and of violating laws aimed at preventing violence in sports – but those sentences were suspended.

Ankaragucu were fined two million Turkish Lira (£45,000) and forced to play five games without fans as a result of the melee, which came soon after Rizespor scored a last minute equaliser. They were relegated from the Turkish top-flight later that season.

When Kyle Jarvis had Covid-19, malaria and tick bite fever

The Zimbabwe fast bowler won’t be able to play cricket for up to six months as he recovers from a trio of infectious illnesses

Zimbabwean quick Kyle Jarvis won’t be able to play cricket for up to six months as he recovers from a trio of infectious illnesses – Covid-19, malaria and tick bite fever – that struck him at the same time but considers himself one of the luckiest survivors around. Jarvis was diagnosed at the end of January and received top-quality medical care which he recognised is not accessible to everyone in his country, or on his continent and is willing to bide his time back to full fitness.”At the Borrowdale Trauma Centre, there are only four private beds at the hospital and I had one of them. The other three were empty. I was very lucky that I have private medical care. If you are someone who is not as fortunate, it would have been a lot scarier,” Jarvis told ESPNcricinfo from his home in Harare.Jarvis first felt symptoms of coronavirus on the morning of Tuesday, January 26. “I had just got back from a fitness session and I felt very hot. Then, I started to get fever, body aches, nausea and headaches and so I thought it was Covid-19 and isolated, but it got progressively worse,” he said.Four days later, on Saturday, January 30, Jarvis felt his condition was “too bad for me to stay at home,” and decided to seek medical care. His wife, Kelsey, who had been taking care of him and home and displayed none of the same symptoms, took him to the Borrowdale Trauma Centre, an upmarket medical facility considered to be the best in the country. There, they told him his “heart rate was above 220 beats per minute which is close to cardiac arrest and that’s when the panic set in.”Jarvis was taken for blood tests and put on an oxygen supply until doctors had determined the cause of his symptoms, which they found to be multi-fold. “At first, they didn’t tell me I had all three (conditions) maybe because they thought I would have panicked more. My wife only told me towards the end of the day,” he said. “I didn’t react too badly because I knew they could treat malaria and tick bite fever and I was actually relieved I was on the right track.”Jarvis was sent home and required to return to the hospital every day for the next five days “They put me on more oxygen each time and gave me drips. I had to spend three to four hours there a day receiving treatment,” he said.By the beginning of February he began to feel better. Although he says his “voice is not 100%,” Jarvis sounds unusually upbeat for someone who will have at least medium-term effects. “I had a CT scan which showed some damage to the lungs from Covid-19 so the doctors think it will be between three and six months before I make a full recovery and will be on blood thinners for the next few months,” he said. “It’s frustrating and upsetting but when you’re been through something like that, you’re just happy to be returning to health”.Yesterday, Jarvis felt well enough to share his ordeal on social media.

Today, he took a four kilometre walk around his neighbourhood. Next week, when Zimbabwe leave for a two-Test and three T20 series in the UAE against Afghanistan, Jarvis will be trying to walk a little further, or a little faster. And in two months’ time, when Pakistan visit, he may be starting to bowl again. But he has no timeline for when he thinks he will be ready for competitive cricket and no sense that the environment is too risky for professional sport to be played. “The world needs to try and carry on and sport brings people hope,” he said. “Even if there’s no crowd, it lets people feel that we may have some kind of normalcy.”Jarvis also cautioned other sportsmen that just because they are elite athletes does not mean they are immune to unpredictability of Covid-19. “I took it for granted that I’m young and fit so I thought that even if I get it, I wouldn’t have much of an issue. But it can happen to anyone and there’s always that chance that you could get something else and that’s scary,” he said. “Everyone is at risk of getting it.”Zimbabwe has fared better than its neighbouring country, South Africa, in coronavirus infection and death rate with under 35,000 cases and less than 1,500 deaths. However, it is severely under-resourced and continues to maintain strict restrictions to prevent overwhelming the country’s limited medical services. The country is currently at Level 4 of a five-stage lockdown in which only mining, manufacturing and agricultural services are allowed to operate as normal and a 6pm to 6am curfew is in force.Professional sports training and matches are allowed to take place although Jarvis has not seen his team-mates since late last year, with the Zimbabwe men’s team only reporting for a camp this week, ahead of their tour to the UAE. And he understands it may be some months before he sees and trains with them again. “I’m not in a hurry. I am feeling okay now and I’ll do my best to be back to normal when I can,” he said.

Rishabh Pant's first home Test hundred cuts England down to size

India build healthy first-innings lead thanks to Pant’s innings of two halves

Alan Gardner05-Mar-2021A day of two halves in Ahmedabad saw India seize control of the fourth Test, as an innings of two halves from Rishabh Pant cut England down to size. Pant’s maiden hundred on home soil was a masterpiece of adapting his game to the demands of conditions and match situation, and by the time he had flamed out, English hopes of hanging in the game had largely gone up in smoke.Seeking the sort of first-innings runs that would define the contest, India had stuttered and stumbled to 146 for 6 during the afternoon session, as England succeeded in their attempts to control the run rate while making regular incisions. Ben Stokes, who hurled himself through 20 overs in the day for the wickets of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and James Anderson set the tone from the outset as Joe Root shuffled his hand adroitly in defence of his side’s mediocre efforts with the bat.But the struggles of Dom Bess left England’s four-man attack stretched, as a century stand between Pant and Washington Sundar wrested back control. Initially, runs came in circumspect fashion as India sought to rebuild, and had Bess been granted an lbw decision when Pant had 35 – umpire Nitin Menon’s not-out call was upheld by the narrowest of margins on DRS – things could have taken a wholly different course. As it was, Pant took the game into his own hands.A watchful half-century from 82 balls provided the kindling for Pant to ignite against a toiling opposition late in the day. Sparks flew and runs flowed, England’s plans to bowl dry blown clean out of the water on a parched late Gujarati afternoon, as Pant raced on to his hundred in the space of another 33 deliveries. He fell moments later, but Sundar carried on the good work until the close to leave India in sight of 300 and a potentially decisive lead.Related

For a while, with India six down and the game in the balance, it was tempting to wonder how much Kohli really did care about the World Test Championship final. Defeat here would cost India their spot, and the captain was one of three wickets to fall – for his second duck of the series – during a morning session which yielded just 56 runs. The dismissal of Rohit one short of fifty then left India in need of some lower-order gumption to keep England at bay.But on a pitch that has been tougher to master than had initially seemed apparent, Pant soared above the competition. If the surface was two-paced, so was Pant’s innings. His control of the situation was evident in the way he kicked up through the gears around the arrival of the new ball – a juncture that might have brought England some relief, with Root increasingly reluctant to turn to Bess’ offspin – as back-to-back boundaries off Stokes put India level on the scoreboard.Further audacity was to come. Anderson, new ball in hand, was greeted by being pumped for fours through mid-off and cover, before the sucker punch: an insouciant reverse-scoop over the slips that even forced a wry grimace from England’s 38-year-old attack leader. His hundred was reached soon after with a slog-swept six off Root, to the delight of a vocal Motera crowd; after steadfastly laying the foundations, this was back to seat-of-the-Pant batting as advertised.Although Anderson eventually scragged the youngster for 101, caught hammering a pull to midwicket, the scales had shifted. Sundar brought up his third Test fifty with a back-foot flay through the off side that typified his own increasingly assured innings, and 141 runs bled through the final session to leave England facing a battle for survival in the third innings.James Anderson and Ben Stokes try to hatch a plan•BCCIAnderson’s figures told a story in themselves. He began the day having not conceded a run, and had figures of 17-11-19-2 before the late carnage; of the seven boundaries he conceded, five came via Pant’s bat. But Anderson and Stokes had to share a heavy workload, as Bess failed to hit his lengths once again, all too often contributing to releasing the pressure that England had striven to build up. Even when Bess did belatedly win an lbw decision against Sundar in the penultimate over of the day, it was overturned on review.England’s hopes of limiting India to a score somewhere in the region of 200 had initially been lifted after a disciplined morning session. Jack Leach struck first, sliding a delivery into Cheteshwar Pujara’s front pad fractionally before his bat came through in defence, before Kohli was extracted via a Stokes bouncer and a feathered edge to the keeper.Anderson accounted for Ajinkya Rahane with the final ball before lunch and although Rohit again looked in ominous touch, a marginal lbw decision buoyed Stokes and England further. When R Ashwin chipped tamely to midwicket for Leach’s second wicket, the hosts seemed to be on the ropes, only for Pant’s innings and his mature partnership with Sundar to give them control of the ring.

Aston Villa tell £17 million striker’s camp they want to sign him for Emery

Aston Villa chiefs have told a £17 million striker's camp that they want to sign him before deadline day, with the Midlands club also informing his club of their serious interest.

Villa spend £150m on eight major signings to back Unai Emery

Despite concerns surrounding PSR throughout the transfer window, coming after Villa announced a near-£120 million loss for the 2022/23 season, transfer chief Monchi, NSWE and the wider recruitment team have still garnered funds to strengthen Unai Emery's squad.

Joao Felix is attracting serious interest from Villa Park as well, so the Premier League side may not even be done just yet, having spent £150 million in total on eight major signings so far with weeks of the window still remaining.

Emery's men most recently announced their bold capture of Belgium international midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton, who joined in a £50 million deal from Goodison Park, with the 22-year-old backing himself to go to the "next level" under Emery.

"I’ll be playing in the Champions League again and that’s very exciting," said Onana (BBC).

"We also have a manager that’s one of the best in the business and I think he can take my game to the next level. Youri [Tielemans] played a big part in me being here because he told me lots of good stuff about the club."

Villa's qualification for the Champions League brings a more congested fixture list and added pressure to succeed for Emery, so reinforcing the squad with needed upgrades is a necessity before 30th August.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

To balance the books concerning PSR, Monchi facilitated some high-profile exits, with Moussa Diaby joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad for around £50 million and Douglas Luiz making a move to Serie A giants Juventus.

In total, Villa have brought in around £108 million through player sales, meaning they've registered a net spend of £42 million in what has been a very busy window for them.

Jhon Duran could still leave Villa in the coming weeks as well, so Emery and could will need to source a replacement for the Colombian and bring in a backup for star striker Ollie Watkins.

Aston Villa tell Jean-Philippe Mateta's camp they want to sign him

As per Standard Sport journalist Dom Smith, that player could well be Crystal Palace marksman Jean-Philippe Mateta.

It is believed Villa have informed Mateta's camp that they want to sign him for Emery, and they've also told Palace this, coming after he scored 19 goals and registered a further five assists in all competitions last season under Roy Hodgson and then Oliver Glasner.

The Eagles are trying to tie him down with a new contract, as his current deal expires in 2026. Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Torino are also keeping tabs on Mateta, who is currently representing France at the Olympics in Paris.

The 27-year-old scored France's winner against Argentina in their quarter-final clash on Friday, setting up a semi-final tie, with the prospect of an Olympic medal very much alive.

Reports have claimed the forward could cost around £17 million to prise away from Selhurst Park, but it remains to be seen if this will be enough as Palace attempt to secure his future.

£45m Liverpool player could quit after he was included in Gordon swap offer

A £45m-rated Liverpool player could now decide to quit Anfield after learning he was involved in a potential swap deal this summer, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Liverpool transfer rumours

The Reds are believed to be in the mix to sign Wolves winger Pedro Neto in the summer transfer window, being seen as an alternative to Anthony Gordon. While the Portuguese's injuries are a concern, Arne Slot could see him as a superb additional option in attack, having racked up nine assists in 18 starts in the Premier League last season.

In defence, a new centre-back could be ideal for Slot, as he looks to replace the departed Joel Matip and provide more competition for others, and Juventus ace Gleison Bremer has been linked with a move to Liverpool. The Brazilian has impressed in Turin since arriving from Torino in 2022, averaging four clearances per game in Serie A in 2023/24.

Fabinho arguably hasn't yet been fully replaced at Anfield, even though Wataru Endo has done a solid job sitting in front of the defence, and PSV Eindhoven ace Joey Veerman has been backed to help fill that void before next season gets underway. He featured six times for the Netherlands at Euro 2024, helping them reach the semi-finals of the competition.

One of the star players at the Euros was Dani Olmo, who shone brightly for eventual winners Spain, and he is also seen as a target for Liverpool. The RB Leipzig attacking midfielder is wanted by Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, too, however, so it won't be easy for Liverpool to get their man.

£45m Liverpool player could now quit Anfield

According to a new update from Football Insider, Joe Gomez could now quit Liverpool this summer after learning he was part of a possible swap offer involving Newcastle United winger Gordon.

The report says that the 27-year-old is "considering" his future at Anfield, with an earlier claim suggesting that the Reds value Gomez at £45m and held discussions to hand Newcastle the defender and a fee with Gordon heading in the opposite direction.

The Merseysiders would reportedly "be willing to sell Gomez at the right price heading into the next four weeks", with Liverpool's longest-serving player potentially waving his goodbyes after nine years at the club.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Losing Gomez would be a real shame, considering what an excellent utility player he has become, being capable of thriving all the way across the back-line. He now has 224 Liverpool appearances in total – it would be far more were it not for injury woes – and he has won eight trophies during this time there.

The England international is arguably now into his peak years, however, and he may feel that he needs to be a regular starter somewhere, which Slot may not be able to promise him.

With Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate potentially the strongest pairing at Liverpool currently, and Jarell Quansah improving all the time, it is hard to see how Gomez's situation is going to change, meaning the Reds could be wise to cash in on him.

Liverpool in the race to sign £60m "monster" who could be better than Gordon

FSG must seriously consider advancing their interest in this Premier League star.

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 2, 2024

Having Gomez around arguably remains the preferable option, given his aforementioned versatility, but if he wants to leave, Slot shouldn't stand in his way, potentially getting as much as £45m for his signature in the process.

Imagine him & Odegaard: Arsenal draw up plans for "mind-blowing" goalscorer

Last season saw Arsenal continue their campaign to dethrone Manchester City from atop the Premier League, and while they came close, it just wasn't to be.

Mikel Arteta's side produced the best defence in the competition, but with five fewer goals than the Sky Blues, they had to settle for second best.

So, it's unsurprising to see that the Gunners have been linked to a plethora of talented number nines this summer, from Benjamin Sesko a month ago to Viktor Gyokeres in the last few weeks.

However, recent reports have touted a different striker altogether for a move to North London, and he's a forward who could be unreal alongside Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal's striker search

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Arsenal have drawn up a list of striker targets for this summer, and one of the main names on the list is LOSC Lille star Jonathan David.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

There is no mention of how much a deal for the Canadian superstar may cost the North Londoners, but a report from the Guardian last month revealed that he could be available for as little as £20m due to his contract expiring next summer.

While this is brilliant news for the Gunners, it's less than ideal that the same report claims Chelsea, Manchester United, West Ham United, and Tottenham Hotspur also want the 24-year-old.

Lille's Jonathan David

This level of interest could make signing David complicated, but for the supposed fee and based on his recent form, this is a transfer Arsenal cannot miss out on – especially as he could be incredible alongside Odegaard.

Why David would be a great teammate for Odegaard

Now, there are probably countless reasons why David would be a fantastic signing and a brilliant teammate for Odegaard, but there is one incredibly straightforward one: his output.

Last season, the Canadian superstar scored 26 goals and provided nine assists for his teammates in just 47 appearances, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.34 games for a club that didn't even finish in the top three.

This incredible form wasn't just down to a one-off season in which everything went his way, either. Over the last four campaigns, the 5 foot 9 marksman has found the back of the net on 84 occasions in 183 club appearances and provided 18 assists to boot.

This means that over the last four years, the New York-born dynamo has averaged a goal involvement every 1.79 games, lending credence to Canadian journalist Tony Marinaro's description of the 53-capped international as "one of the best strikers in the world."

So, if the "mind-blowing" striker, as talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed him, can maintain such an impressive level of performance for a side not challenging for the league or a title in Europe, imagine what he could do in this current Arsenal team, and in particular, with the club's Norwegian wizard behind him.

The former Real Madrid wonderkid scored 11 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 games last season, equating to a goal involvement every 2.18 games on average, and was named the club's Player of the Season.
