Tons for Bens Slater and Duckett hand Nottinghamshire advantage

Stand of 178 sees Notts take control on day one against Lancashire

From the moment Ben Slater cover drove his tenth ball of the day to the boundary it was plain that this would be a morning when batting came easy to him. Cricketers treasure such times and loathe wasting them. They know how easy it is to get out when the game is alien or the bowling barely playable. Slater made 471 runs in the County Championship last season, his first with Nottinghamshire after his move from Derbyshire, and a few people thought him a second-tier cricketer promoted above his station. Only a fortnight ago he was on loan at Leicestershire. And now the fours flowed like cream from a jug, ten of them in a 63-ball fifty, three in one Liam Hurt over, accustomed cover drives mixed with perfectly timed punches down the ground.Maybe the familiarity of the opponents helped a little; most certainly their generosity of length did. Thirteen days ago the on-loan Slater was making 172 against three members of this Lancashire attack at Worcester. He knew the disciplines required when facing Tom Bailey while the left-arm swing bowler Luke Wood was his colleague at Trent Bridge last season. And until lunchtime at least, each ball became little more than the context for the stroke he chose to play. Things were more difficult in the afternoon session; for one thing Dane Vilas’s bowlers offered fewer presents. So Slater was grateful for the assistance of Ben Duckett, whose sharp eye and quick hands helped him put on 178 for the second wicket on Nottinghamshire’s best day of this season like no other. Both men made hundreds and Duckett’s dismissal, leg before to Bailey for 116 three overs before the light closed in, has not altered the shape of the game.Having chosen to bowl first, Lancashire were in disarray before the shine had left the new ball. Nottinghamshire’s openers, Slater and Haseeb Hameed, had 50 runs on the board inside ten overs and the departure of the former Lancashire batsman Hameed, lbw for 22 when trying to work George Balderson to leg in no way disturbed Slater’s rhythm. Nottinghamshire took lunch with their score on 107 for 1 and must have known they already had an opportunity to dictate the course of this game. The cricket became a trifle scrappier in the early afternoon but perhaps it could scarcely have been otherwise. Duckett took the dominant role but his style his busier than the more classical Slater and he is more comfortable manufacturing glides and cuts off a subtly angled bat. Such an approach invites risk. It can even appear rash and the former Northamptonshire batsman had an escape on 27 when he edged Bailey through the left hand of Keaton Jennings at first slip. But mixed in with such scares were the typical small man’s pulls and sweeps and the offspinner Liam Livingstone became a frequent sufferer. Duckett reached his fifty off 69 balls and by tea he was 91, thereby trailing Slater by one run despite facing 47 balls fewer. Shortly after the resumption Duckett cover drove a Tom Hartley full toss to the boundary and overtook his partner. But Slater still got to his century first when a Bailey misfield at cover allowed him to scamper the run he needed. Four balls later Duckett whipped the same unfortunate cricketer to the square-leg boundary to reach his own hundred, his first for Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. Each batsman congratulated the other although there was no unseemly hugging, a fact which will have pleased James Whitaker, the match referee. Apparently Whitaker is something of a stickler when it comes to vectors of happiness and is as quick to suppress them as the Puritans were to shut the theatres.Lancashire’s players were similarly restrained when they finally took Duckett’s wicket, although since the total was 256 there is the alternative explanation that they simply couldn’t be arsed making much whoopee. They will, however, take a different view of matters in Hucknall and Welbeck, Sandiacre and Sherwood. There may have been one or two afternoons this season when Nottinghamshire’s supporters did not regret their enforced exclusion from Trent Bridge. But they will be sorry to have missed this one, and maybe Slater missed them, too, not least because it prevented him pondering whether one or two of those applauding his century were also doubting his worth less than a year ago.

England take series 1-0 after James Anderson reaches 600

James Anderson became the first seamer to take 600 Test wickets as England’s third and final Test against Pakistan petered out into a rain-affected draw at the Ageas Bowl.Anderson had Pakistan’s captain and first-innings centurion Azhar Ali caught by Joe Root at slip in his third over of the final day after overnight rain and standing water had pushed back the start until 4.15pm. He was the second-fastest man to the landmark, six balls behind Muttiah Muralitharan, and the first Englishman.Despite Anderson’s early breakthrough, England never looked likely to bowl Pakistan out as they followed on on a flat pitch that offered little for bowlers throughout the Test match, particularly with the old ball. Root had Asad Shafiq caught at bat-pad three balls before the second new ball was due, but four overs later he had bumped fists with Azhar. After heavy overnight rain across the UK, it had initially looked unlikely that there would be any play at all on the final day. The Ageas Bowl ground staff faced a long clean-up operation, with a vast amount of standing water on the covers and several problem areas in the outfield. Following several inspections, the umpires decided that the ground would fit for play from 4.15pm, with up to 42 overs possible. All eyes were immediately on Anderson, who shared the bowling with Jofra Archer from the outset, as Azhar and Babar Azam successfully negotiated his first two overs with several fielders catching in front of the wicket and Joe Root positioning himself as the solitary slip.James Anderson celebrates taking his 600th Test wicket•Getty Images

The moment arrived at 4.37pm, from the second ball of Anderson’s third over. The ball pitched slightly short of a length in the off-stump channel, nipping away with a hint of extra bounce as it took the shoulder of Azhar’s bat. England’s slip catching has caused them problems throughout the summer, but this chance could hardly have been simpler for Root, who clung on to take Anderson to the 600 mark.He immediately burst into a broad grin, high-fiving substitute fielder James Bracey, embracing Root, shaking hands with Jos Buttler and Stuart Broad and then being congratulated in turn by each of his team-mates. He acknowledged the handful of backroom and venue staff in the ground by holding the ball aloft to them, beaming from ear to ear. That left England with seven wickets to get, and despite Anderson nipping one past Asad Shafiq’s outside edge, he was soon taken out of the attack. Babar and Shafiq ticked over towards the new ball, with Dom Bess and Root operating in tandem, while Dom Sibley’s part-time legspin was given a first outing in Test cricket.Babar raced towards fifty with a flurry of boundaries off Bess, reaching his second half-century of an underwhelming series by nudging Root through the leg side with the new ball almost due, but Shafiq fell the very next ball, prodding him to Bracey under the lid at short leg.Anderson took the new ball and found sharp movement in his first over, but not long after Root decided that he had seen enough and the captains bumped fists for the draw at 6.05pm.That meant a 1-0 England win – their first series victory against Pakistan since 2010 – with Anderson taking the headlines. Both of the Ageas Bowl Tests in this series were marred by inclement weather, but this one will undoubtedly be remembered – for Zak Crawley’s epic 267 as well as Anderson’s milestone.

The English full-back was handed his senior debut by Klopp in 2016 and it was under the German manager's tutelage that Alexander-Arnold established himself as one of the top defenders in the Premier League. However, the 25-year-old recently spoke highly of new Reds boss Slot while outlining his ambitions under the Dutch coach.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The England international also revealed the early conversations he had with Slot after he took charge of the club this summer and how the ex-Feyenoord boss has been helping him to further grow as a footballer by scrutinising his performances.

  • WHAT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SAID

The Reds defender said to reporters: "I said to him [Slot] that I would like to be the defender that no one wants to come up against in Europe. We agreed that he will be harsh on me. If any time an attacker gets by me and gets past me, he will call it out in meetings, and individual meetings, and say this cannot happen.

"We go through every game together and he highlights where he wants me to improve. Even after the Milan game, we had about 20 clips going through what I could have done better and the good parts as well."

He added: "It is really refreshing to have a manager who will help and guide and teach me how to be better as a player. I am someone who wants to learn, someone who wants to be the best and someone who strives to be the best ever."

Australia need middle-order solution as England look to take series

England pulled off a terrific comeback in the opening game, but both teams will want better batting displays

Andrew McGlashan05-Sep-2020Big PictureThere was no way England should have won (or Australia lost) the opening match of the series: 39 off 36 balls with nine wickets in hand and two batsmen set is a cakewalk. Except, of course, that T20 can throw up some extraordinary finishes. That one has set this series up beautifully – England buoyed by their great escape, Australia with their tail between their legs as to how it slipped away. Both sides will want improvement from their middle orders. England failed to build on the solid platform given by Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan, although the latter managed to nurse the innings through to a total that was just enough, and Eoin Morgan later suggested Buttler had made the pitch look easier for scoring than it was. For Australia it has the makings of a theme and the major area their T20 side needs to address. It’s all well and good David Warner, Aaron Finch and to a lesser extent Steven Smith filling their boots but the middle order has to be able to finish the job when needed. It is difficult at the moment to establish who could be the best finisher in Australia. The majority of the batsmen in this squad have their success at the top of the order; Marcus Stoinis’ recall at No. 5 highlighted the issue just days after Justin Langer said he was ideally an opener.England will know they got away with one on Friday night, but having the skill to pull games out of the fire will be priceless in the T20 World Cups. It was also significant because their bowling had been the weak link. However, the return of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood provided a cutting edge while Chris Jordan and Tom Curran showed their death-over skills to close it out.Form guide(last five completed matches)
England WLWWW
Australia LWLWWIn the spotlightJos Buttler was in sparkling touch at the start of England’s innings as he scorched through the Powerplay and looked set for a big score before picking out deep midwicket. It seems that he will be given an extended run opening the batting in this format, and there is plenty of logic behind giving such a player as many overs to face as possible. However, as highlighted by Australia, those who finish a T20 innings are like gold dust. England have options for the top order (Jason Roy isn’t even available for selection) and it may yet be a consideration that Buttler’s ability in the middle – or at least as floating batsmen – is so much better than what others can provide. It feels as though Alex Carey has been around the Australia side a long time although it’s actually just over two years. In that time he’s played 29 T20Is and batted in 17 of them, taking a variety of positions from opener down to No. 7. He is now anchored to a middle-order role but it’s a challenge for him to learn that position. Last Australian summer he did not get a bat in six T20Is; in four innings since he’s made 27, 14, 7 and 1. In the second of those knocks he was elevated to No. 4 – the position he now primarily holds for the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL having previously opened – but in his T20I career the most balls he’s faced in an innings is 24. That’s the lot of a middle-order player in the format, but it’s a tough one to master.Team newsYou would say that England picked their first-choice XI for the opening match and unless there is a desire to rotate, or any niggles have emerged, it would seem likely that they would go with the same again. Sam Billings and Joe Denly are the spare batsmen while Sam Curran is the extra allrounder.England (probable) 1 Jos Buttler (wk), 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Tom Banton, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Tom Curran, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Jofra Archer, 11 Mark Wood / Sam CurranClearly Australia have work to do on their middle order, but changes after one match who smack of a knee jerk reaction. However, they aren’t short of extra players to choose from with a 21-man squad on tour. But to highlight the issue they face Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Wade and the uncapped Josh Philippe are all more top-order than middle-order batsmen. Given that this is Australia’s first cricket for six months and the matches come thick and fast now there may be some consideration to rotating among the quicks.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Steven Smith, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Ashton Agar, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Kane Richardson / Josh Hazlewood, 11 Adam ZampaPitch and conditionsThe same pitch will be used for the second match and Warner suggested it would be a touch drier as it is a day game. The forecast is for a dry, bright autumn day in Southampton.Stats and Trivia Malan’s half-century in the opening match means he now holds the highest average (51.58) of any batsman with over 500 T20I runs Since January 2019, Australia’s batting strike-rate for positions 5-7 is the lowest among the top ten T20I nations at 111.29. They have played the fewest innings in that position (18 across 12 matches) but there have been just seven fours and eight sixes. During their opening stand of 98, David Warner and Aaron Finch became the ninth pair to add 1000 runs together in T20IsQuotes”With some of the games that are being played – there have been some phenomenal games, some phenomenal contests – why not let the whole world see it?”
“It was the first time I’ve been here [England] and not been abused. It was quite nice.”

Celtic expected to make tiny profit on £18k-p/w ace who wants to leave

Celtic could be on course to post a profit from selling one of their unwanted players this summer, according to a recent report.

Hoops confirm title win

Though realistically the Scottish Premiership title was won over the weekend courtesy of a 2-1 win over Rangers at Celtic Park, it was not official until Wednesday evening, when Celtic crowned themselves in style with a 5-0 win away to Kilmarnock.

Alongside O'Riley: 9/10 star just helped secure the title for Celtic

The Hoops star justified his selection with a terrific performance at the top end of the pitch.

ByDan Emery May 16, 2024

Brendan Rodgers' side could well turn their success into a domestic double before the end of the month, as they meet Rangers once more to contest the Scottish Cup final on 25th May.

Though it has been far from a vintage season for the Celtic Park outfit, they nonetheless have added yet another trophy to their cabinet. However, attention will now turn to the transfer window, with the Hoops needing to improve to stand any chance of avoiding embarrassment in Europe's top competition next season, a competition in which they boasted the second-worst goal difference last time around.

They are in the market for a new goalkeeper after Joe Hart announced his retirement, while Adam Idah is only on loan and could force them into signing another striker should that deal not be made permanent from Norwich City.

Celtic to make small profit

Now, Celtic could be set to kick off their summer transfer window by making a small profit on one of their loanees. That comes in the form of forgotten man Sead Haksabanovic, whose future appears certain to lie away from Celtic next season.

He has spent the season on loan at Stoke City, but has appeared just 19 times in the Championship, starting 11 games and grabbing just a solitary goal as his side narrowly avoided relegation to League One.

The Potters have no intention of making the loan move permanent in light of his struggles, which is set to lead to his return to Celtic, but that may be a short stay.

As per Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt [via Sport Witness], three clubs are interested in signing the winger on a permanent basis, with Italian trio Hellas Verona, Torino and newly promoted Parma all keeping tabs on his situation.

Previous reports have made it clear that Haksabanovic is keen to leave Celtic Park this summer permanently, despite having a contract with the Scottish Champions until 2027 that sees him take home £18,000 a week.

Though dubbed "brilliant" and "excellent" by former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou, the Montenegro international has failed to find his feet whatsoever under Rodgers even in the wake of Jota's departure.

Stoke loanee Sead Haksabanovic.

And as a consequence, Football Insider revealed that "the 24-year-old is now keen to secure a move away permanently". For their part, Celtic will not stand in his way, with the Bhoys valuing the winger at around 3m euros (£2.5m), a fee that would see them make a profit of around £400,000 on the 2.5m euros they shelled out to bring him to Scotland from Rubin Kazan back in the summer of 2022.

At 25-years-old, the winger is stills searching for regular football, and a move away could suit all parties while netting Celtic a tiny profit in the process.

"Disaster" – Journalist shares new Erik ten Hag sack update from Man Utd

To say it's been a poor season at Manchester United would be an understatement and with the campaign finally nearing its end, another update has emerged on the future of Erik ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag's Man Utd future

Everything seemed on track last season. United finished inside the Premier League's top four and won the Carabao Cup to tick two important boxes in Ten Hag's debut season. Things only looked likely to get better from there, especially after the arrivals of Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. It looked as though those at Old Trafford finally had a manager ready to take them back to the top.

Ten Hag is "crazy" about signing "incredible" £265k-p/w star for Man Utd

He would walk into the Manchester United team this summer.

By
Ben Browning

May 12, 2024

A lot can change in a year, however. Fast forward to the present day and the Red Devils have gone from trophy winners and top four finishers on track for much more to a side who seem to lack a plan and are falling shorter and shorter of expectations every week. The FA Cup final could yet salvage something from their season of course, but the odds will be stacked against them up against rivals and potential Premier League champions Manchester City.

Now, according to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider less than 24 hours before United's match with Arsenal, Manchester United are set to sack Ten Hag at the end of the season, with a decision made by INEOS. The journalist described the Red Devils' season as a "disaster" on the Inside Track Podcast and now expected United to end Ten Hag's Old Trafford nightmare before Sir Jim Ratcliffe seeks a replacement.

The Dutchman is set to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when it comes to those who have failed since Sir Alex Ferguson, perhaps exposing a greater problem at the club than just one controlled from the dugout.

Man Utd's next manager

It's a somewhat poisoned chalice and has been since the days of Ferguson at United, but it's also a responsibility that could finally have some form of structure behind it with Ratcliffe at the held and Dan Ashworth reportedly arriving in the sporting director role. That said, it's a decision that those at Old Trafford cannot afford to get wrong.

The likes of Gareth Southgate and Graham Potter have been linked with the job, but it remains to be seen what route Ratcliffe chooses to go down. Southgate has impressed as England's manager but has consistently fallen short at the last hurdle, despite taking charge of arguably England's latest golden generation.

Potter, meanwhile, just reportedly rejected Ajax and has been out of a job since failing at Chelsea in a disastrous spell. Given that his last spell in charge at a top-six club ended so badly, there would certainly be plenty of eyebrows raised if Potter became the man handed the responsibility of guiding the current United squad through the current chaos.

Newcastle confident of sealing negotiations with £30k-a-week ace this week

Newcastle United are confident of sealing negotiations for Eddie Howe's first summer signing this week, according to a new transfer update from The Telegraph.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies continue to be linked with a whole host of players ahead of next season, with veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic one of those to have been most recently backed to complete a move to St James' Park – he will be a free agent once his spell at Queens Park Rangers ends this summer.

Juventus centre-back Dean Huijsen is a highly-rated young defender who could have a big future in the game, and Newcastle are believed to see him as a strong alternative to Tosin Adarabioyo, who they now look set to miss out on. The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at Roma, making 13 appearances in Serie A and growing in experience.

Dean Huijsen in action for Roma.

It could be that Howe needs to replace certain outgoing figures in the summer transfer window, with Miguel Almiron one such player who falls into that bracket. Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo has emerged as a reported target to come in for him, although Liverpool are also among the clubs interested in snapping him up.

Similarly, there is no guarantee that Bruno Guimaraes will definitely still be a Newcastle player once the 2024/25 campaign gets underway, with the Brazilian having the potential to leave a huge void in midfield. Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White has been backed as a replacement for him, following a strong season that saw him score five goals and register 10 assists in the Premier League.

Newcastle could sign £30k-a-week ace this week

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle will look to seal the signing of Bournemouth defender Llloyd Kelly this week, having seemingly failed to snap up Adarabioyo. They "will attempt to get a deal" over the line in the coming days and there is "confidence" it will happen, with the Englishman able to come in on a free transfer after his Cherries deal ends.

It is no hidden secret that the £30,000-a-week centre-back has been a primary target for the Magpies for some time now and the Adarabioyo news appears to have sped up the process, ahead of the Fulham man's possible move to Chelsea.

While not exactly a world-class player who is going to take Newcastle up a significant level, Kelly could prove to be really astute business by Newcastle, especially as Howe knows him from their Bournemouth days together. Another of his former managers, Gary O'Neil, has also hailed his defensive expertise in the past up against Mohamed Salah.

"I thought Lloyd was incredible. I think he had a 12-week ankle injury followed by a six-week calf injury. Didn't have much time in between, and then came back today having not trained much, to play left back against one of the best wingers in the world. I thought he showed everything, the potential he has to be a top defender. I thought it was a very, very impressive performance against a top attacker."

Newcastle eyeing move to sign "fantastic" Premier League record-holder for Howe

He’s an experienced player.

ByTom Cunningham Jun 2, 2024

Kelly could fill in at centre-back and left-back, adding to the depth within Howe's squad, and even if the move ends up not working out, the fact that he won't cost a fee takes out the risk element compared to spending big on a defender.

Ten Hag made the decision to bench Rashford against Crystal Palace, and started the game with Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee, and Alejandro Garnacho in his front three. When the team news was announced, Jamie Redknapp, working for Sky, speculated that there may have been a clash between the pair.

Ten Hag took the time to hit back at Redknapp's assertion, insisting that he made the change for tactical reasons. United played in midweek – Rashford scored a brace in a 7-0 win over Barnsley – and will next be in action on Wednesday against Twente in the Europa League. The Englishman was introduced as a second-half substitute at Selhurst Park but was unable to inspire a winner.
