Wow: Rangers now planning exciting summer transfer alongside Silva

Rangers are believed to be planning a big-money signing alongside the permanent arrival of Fabio Silva in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Rangers want loan deals made permanent

The Gers make the trip to Dundee in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday, well aware that pressure may have been heaped on them by Celtic in the title race.

Victory for their rivals at home to St Johnstone on Saturday would put them one point clear at the top of the table, so Philippe Clement's side will know exactly where they stand as they look to bounce back from the disappointment of exiting the Europa League at the hands of Benfica.

One player who could feature prominently for Rangers this weekend is Silva, who has come in on loan and done a good job so far, scoring four goals in 14 appearances to date. Recent reports have suggested that the Scottish giants are keen on signing the Portuguese on a permanent basis from Wolves at the end of the season, although whether they seal Champions League qualification or not could decide if the funds are available to strike a deal this summer.

Rangers loanee Abdallah Sima.

Another individual who Rangers reportedly want to tie down permanently is Abdallah Sima, who has been another excellent loan signing, bagging 10 goals in 15 league starts this season.

Brighton are happy to let the 22-year-old leave in the summer window, and he could jump at the chance to move to Ibrox for an extended period of time.

Rangers eyeing big-money signing alongside Silva

According to a new update from Football Insider, Rangers want to sign a new striker this summer, even if Silva completes a permanent move to Ibriox.

The report says that signing is a "number one priority" for the Gers, who want to have "two top forwards" at the club moving forward, providing Clement with plenty of depth in the process. It could be a big signing too if they qualify for the Champions League, which is expected to add £20m to Clement's transfer kitty.

This is a hugely encouraging news for Rangers supporters, with the owners showing real ambition in the transfer market at a time when they have already narrowed the gulf between themselves and Celtic significantly and perhaps even flipped it.

The Gers need to ensure that this season is far from a one-off, however, building a squad that is capable of winning multiple Scottish Premiership titles under Clement, as well as going as far as possible in the Champions League.

It could even be that the club's all-time transfer record is broken this summer, with Silva, Sima or another addition all having the potential to join for more than the £12m Tore Andre Flo did back in 2000.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland is arguably the ideal option to come in, considering the 28-year-old is the top scorer in the league this season with 20 goals – he has six more than anyone else – and he is a boyhood Rangers supporter, having been linked with a move numerous times recently.

At just 17 years of age, the record-breaking teenager has become a senior star in Catalunya and Euro 2024 winner with Spain. Yamal is already being billed as a Ballon d’Or winner of the future, but has been given important advice from club colleague Marc-Andre ter Stegen when it comes to scaling such heights.

Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper has told of Yamal’s meteoric rise: “We have to give credit to [former head coach] Xavi, who is the one who gave him the opportunity. There's something special about him. I hope he keeps his feet on the ground, that he doesn't listen to the praise and thinks about the moment, that he continues to work for the team. He still has room for improvement, he is very young, he is just starting. He has also grown physically. Lamine knows that he can count on me for anything he needs.”

Yamal rubbed shoulders with Barca icon Messi when just a baby and has followed down the same path as a fellow La Masia academy graduate. Ten Stegen is reluctant to put the pair in a similar talent bracket just yet, adding on his legendary former Argentine team-mate: “You can't compare them. Of course we miss Leo. As a footballer he is unique, you can see him in every game, always staying at the highest level. He is the best of all time.”

Yamal has already taken in over 50 appearances for Barcelona and 14 for the Spain national team. He registered seven goals for the Blaugrana last season and will be hoping to better that return in the 2024-25 as he prepares to rejoin that fold under new head coach Hansi Flick.

SLC to terminate coach Hathurusingha's contract, finally

Hathurusingha has moved for compensation through the Court of Arbitration for Sport

Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to terminate Chandika Hathurusingha’s contract as head coach, while Hathurusingha has moved for compensation through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), following months of deadlock.Although SLC had suspended Hathurusingha as far back as August last year, they had continued to pay him for several months, while lawyers traded letters and the board sent Hathurusingha a list of alleged failings as head coach. The charges levelled by SLC include failure to adequately prepare the Sri Lanka side for various assignments, and failure to maintain good relationships with players. The board has finally resolved to terminate Hathurusingha’s contract, but the possibility that they will have to pay Hathurusingha a substantial amount for early termination remains. His contract was due to run until December this year.”At the last executive committee meeting, on Friday, it was decided that the contract would be terminated,” board CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo. “I can’t say by memory when we stopped the payments to [Hathurusingha], but I believe it was somewhere around October last year.”The board’s decision came after CAS, a global sporting body that aims to settle disputes related to sports via arbitration, sent them a letter listing Hathurusingha’s demands. De Silva confirmed that SLC is bound to the CAS process, and the board is now understood to be required to respond. This is likely because Hathurusingha’s contract with the board had stipulated that CAS could become involved if something like an early termination did eventuate. CAS will facilitate arbitration, and will effectively function as the intermediary between the parties for as long as this process lasts.Hathurusingha’s demands, conveyed to SLC by CAS, are understood to include not only loss of income from the early termination, but also compensation for damages to his reputation. He had remained in Sri Lanka through the early months of his legal tussle with SLC, but had returned home to Australia after the board’s payments ceased.Hathurusingha is the third head coach in the last five years whose tenure with Sri Lanka was ended before the contracted term was served. Marvan Atapattu and Graham Ford were both elbowed out of the position in 2015 and 2017 respectively. In 2013, SLC had also had to pay Geoff Marsh a substantial settlement after the board had terminated his contract early in 2012.

Ange must boldly bench 5/10 Spurs star who was saved by Johnson

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou wakes up this morning with one eye fixed on Aston Villa's trip to the Etihad Stadium to clash against champions Manchester City in the Premier League.

Villa are on the edge of top four, one place ahead of Spurs, but the fifth-placed side may yet rue the attacking bluntness that prevented them from securing all three points against West Ham United the day before, on Tuesday evening.

Whether it's a point gained or two points lost will be defined later down the line. Manchester United trail by nine points in sixth, albeit with a game in hand. The fifth spot in the Premier League may yet cement a Champions League spot through new UEFA co-efficient rankings, though that means rooting for rivals like Arsenal and the Hammers on the continent.

It was that man Brennan Johnson who got on the scoresheet to give Spurs a fast start to match his lightning pace, having turned in from close range after good work from loanee Timo Werner to get in behind and pump through a low cross.

Brennan Johnson's game vs West Ham in numbers

Johnson has not always found a starting berth easy to come by during his maiden campaign with the club, but Postecoglou clearly trusts the pacy Wales international and he has been rewarded with some stellar showings on the wing of late.

Against the Hammers, he was effective, continuing a promising run of form that is fast shaking off the doubters following his £47.5m move to Spurs from Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day in August.

Now with four goals and three assists from ten top-flight matches (just five starts) since the new year, the 22-year-old is proving himself a valuable option and did so once again despite a lukewarm Lilywhites performance.

It left much to be desired heading into the business end of the campaign, with James Maddison one of the chief culprits after yet another indifferent display.

James Maddison's performance vs West Ham

Maddison has now entered a poor patch of form but he has showcased his high-level ability on enough occasions this term to quickly allay any fears that he is falling by the wayside in the final stretch of the season.

Postecoglou has previously hailed Maddison as one of the club's biggest "leaders" and this is reflected through both his conduct and quality on the field. Though he has definitely dipped recently and will need to pick himself back up quickly with so much on the line.

As per Sofascore, the 27-year-old completed 89% of his passes against West Ham, taking 72 touches, succeeding with two of his three attempted dribbles and winning five ground duels, also precisely placing all three of his crosses.

Despite this, the £170k-per-week phenom created just one key pass all evening, solemnly summing up the struggles his side were faced with at the London Stadium, having also lost the ball on 13 occasions.

Writing in his post-match player ratings, football.london's Alasdair Gold branded him with a 5/10 match rating and said: 'Some nice little turns and touches but another game he has struggled to grab by the scruff of the neck as he was doing earlier in the season.'

Something needs to change soon if Tottenham are to beat Aston Villa to that fourth and potentially final Champions League qualifying spot, and while it might seem unthinkable to some, Postecoglou might be inclined to drop his elite playmaker.

Why James Maddison could be dropped

It's dangerous territory when a player cultivates an air of invincibility, and that's not meant by performance on the pitch. Maddison is a wonderful midfielder, he's been the free-flowing machine behind Postecoglou's attacking verve.

In the Premier League this season, the England international has chalked up four goals and seven assists from 20 matches, completing 87% of his passes, creating nine big chances and averaging 2.3 key passes and 5.6 successful duels per game.

Moreover, he ranks among the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 9% for passes attempted and the top 1% for shot-creating actions and progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

It's fair to say that there's no one quite like him down the N17, but that doesn't make him undroppable.

For example, Giovani Lo Celso has qualities that allow him to succeed in an attacking midfield position, but the best-placed stand-in would be Dejan Kulusevski, who has been out of sorts himself recently but brings energy and athleticism that could charge Tottenham's attack and sculpt it back into shape.

Admiring the Sweden international's distinctive attributes, Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir said: "Dejan Kulusevski really is a special special player. Works so hard, covers every blade of grass. Hell of an engine on him, and just so much heart."

Kulusevski has also created 12 big chances from 28 Premier League matches this term, crisp with an 82% pass success rate and also averaging 2.0 key passes and 4.1 ball recoveries per fixture.

Dejan Kulusevski celebrates for Tottenham.

While Kulusevski is principally a wide midfielder, barrelling up and down the right flank to send defenders in a spin and puncture backlines to open up space – space that, usually, allows Maddison to thrive through his playmaking prowess – he has filled in at No. 10 on occasion.

Maddison was positively electric after completing his £40m transfer from Leicester City last summer, winning the Premier League's Player of the Month award for August and leading those such as the Times' Henry Winter to describe him as a "nightmare for defenders."

But he's waned following a several-month-long ankle injury suffered back in November, understandably. Back in his absence, Kulusevski featured centrally, bagging a goal and assist apiece in matches against Manchester City and Nottingham Forest back in December.

Spurs could land their own Cole Palmer in "magic" £51m gem

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 1, 2024

He's not quite the elite creator that his English teammate is but there's no question that Kulusevski has skills that make him a good fit for life in the centre of the park – again – pushing and prodding into the final third.

This would also allow fleet-footed flankers Werner and Johnson to wreak chaos, with dynamic striker Heung-min Son bringing it all together, supplemented from behind by Kulusevski. It might just work out.

Newcastle academy star who earns less than Miley could replace Longstaff

Newcastle United have endured a difficult 2023/24 campaign as they have failed to kick on after they qualified for the Champions League last season.

Eddie Howe's side finished in the top four in the Premier League to secure European football and reached the final of the League Cup last term, but things have not gone as well this time around.

The Magpies are currently tenth in the top-flight, have been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, and finished bottom of their Champions League group.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Change could be on the horizon during the summer transfer window if Newcastle do not enjoy a terrific end to the season, as the head coach could look to make alterations to his playing squad to bounce back next term.

One player who could be on their way out of St. James' Park is Sean Longstaff, who has been linked with a move away from the club, and Howe may already have a homegrown replacement for the midfielder in U21 starlet James Huntley.

Latest Newcastle United transfer news

According to a report from the Sunday Mirror (17 March, page 66), via Sports View, Championship side Leeds United are lining up a swoop to sign the English metronome at the end of the season.

Longstaff's current contract with the Magpies is due to expire at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, and the Whites are looking to take advantage of that by making a move for him this summer.

He will only have 12 months left on his deal later this year and Newcastle could be forced to either cash in on him or risk losing the academy graduate for nothing in 2025.

The report claims that the club have had preliminary talks with the central midfielder over a contract extension on Tyneside, but it remains to be seen whether or not they will be successful in their attempts to tie him down.

Sean Longstaff

It states that Leeds, who are currently top of the Championship and on course to seal promotion to the top-flight, are eyeing up a £15m deal to secure his services.

That could help Newcastle with their own desire to bolster the squad as that £15m would be pure profit, given that Longstaff came through the academy rather than being bought for millions from another team.

Sean Longstaff's performances this season

The Magpies may also benefit from cashing in on Longstaff on the pitch as the English dud's performances this season have been far from convincing.

Across 25 appearances in the Premier League this term, the 26-year-old lightweight has failed to make a big impact in or out of possession for Howe's side.

He currently ranks within the bottom 38% of his positional peers in the top-flight for pass completion rate (80.7%), the bottom 14% for shot-creating actions (1.61) per 90, and the bottom 39% for Expected Assisted Goals (0.08) per 90.

This shows that Longstaff, who is also in the bottom 17% for progressive carries (0.66) per 90, has been wasteful with his use of the ball, as he has given possession away more than the average midfielder in the league whilst also being below average as a creator.

The academy graduate also ranks within the bottom 34% or lower of midfielders in the Premier League for tackles (1.75), interceptions (0.52), clearances (0.76), and aerial battles won (0.43) per 90 respectively.

These statistics show that the Toon lightweight, who has lost 53% of his duels in the division, has been below average defensively and in possession as a passer and creator. Although, Longstaff has scored four goals in his 25 league outings, which shows that he does offer a goal threat from midfield.

His struggles at both ends of the pitch were on display in Newcastle's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday, as you can see in the table below.

The Leeds United target was sloppy in possession, with zero chances created and a 77% pass accuracy, and was dominated in the physical battle, with one duel won out of four contested.

Therefore, the Magpies could decide to rake in £15m from Daniel Farke's side for Longstaff to boost their own transfer budget, given his poor displays this term, and Howe may already have a homegrown replacement for him in the form of Huntley.

Why James Huntley could be Longstaff's replacement

The academy starlet, who earns less – per Salary Sport – (£760-per-week) than his former U21s teammate Lewis Miley (£2k-per-week), is a promising young central midfielder who could emerge as a first-team option.

Miley's emergence – with 27 first-team appearances this season – shows that Howe is willing to dip into the youth team to find solutions to problems within his senior squad.

Huntley could now follow in his former teammate's footsteps and come through as a homegrown heir to Longstaff's position in the team, should the club decide to move the 26-year-old dud on this summer.

The 20-year-old youngster showcased his quality against first-team opposition in the form of Crewe in the EFL Trophy earlier this season, as you can see in the table below.

Huntley scored Newcastle's only goal from the spot in a 2-1 loss but also showcased his combative nature with two tackles, one interception, one block, and one clearance to win six duels.

Whereas, Longstaff has only won 3.3 duels per game on average and averaged less than one key pass (0.6) per match in the Premier League this season.

This suggests that the potential is there for the U21s maestro to offer more than the first-team dud as a competitor and creator in midfield, if he can translate that level of performance over to the senior team.

Leeds eyeing £15m deal to sign "really important" player if they go up

He’s already proven in the Premier League.

ByTom Coates Mar 17, 2024

Huntley has also chipped in with contributions in the final third throughout his time in the academy, with three goals and three assists in 32 U21 outings, after a return of four goals and four assists in 37 matches for the U18s.

These statistics show that the Magpies youngster is a midfielder who can compete to win duels and win possession back for his side more often than Longstaff whilst also being able to offer quality at the top end of the pitch with goals and assists.

Therefore, the 20-year-old gem, who still has plenty of time left to develop and improve further, could emerge as a dream homegrown replacement for the Leeds target and follow in Miley's footsteps if Howe offers him a chance to impress.

Tom Latham, Tom Blundell start steady after Marnus Labuschagne's 215

Better than Sir Donald Bradman, better than Steven Smith, better than Neil Harvey. Marnus Labuschagne’s astonishing home summer was crowned by a double-century at the SCG that vaulted him to 837 runs for the home Test summer, the highest tally for five matches by any Australian, bettering Harvey’s 834 more than 60 years ago.Australia, however, did not have day two of the New Year’s Test all their own way, as New Zealand conjured the capture of Australia’s last five wickets for 44 runs and then watched Tom Blundell and their stand-in captain, Tom Latham, put together a determined unbeaten opening stand of 63 in the day’s closing 29 overs.Labuschagne’s first Test double-century had helped him form the backbone of Australia’s first innings against a New Zealand side that was reduced to dressing up assistant coach Peter Fulton as a substitute fielder as illness stretched further across the squad.Matthew Wade and Travis Head were tempted into errors in the morning session, but Labuschagne was content to take his time as only 71 runs were compiled by the hosts before lunch. He then waited patiently in the 190s opposite the captain, Tim Paine, who made 35 in a sixth-wicket stand worth 79 runs. But from the moment of Paine’s dismissal, bowled between bat and pad by Colin de Grandhomme, New Zealand fought well to restrict the Australians to 454, with the wristspin of Todd Astle looking particularly dangerous on a pitch that is starting to take some turn for the slow bowlers.Latham and Blundell then weathered the new-ball bursts of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson, before Nathan Lyon gained some disconcerting spin out of a wearing pitch. The tourists’ stocks had been thinned even further by the news that Jeet Raval was now struggling with flu-like symptoms, forcing Fulton into the whites to augment the touring team’s options for fielding and running drinks out to the middle.Their diligence in the field and with the ball was laudable in not allowing the Australians to get away, even as Labuschagne found the occasional boundary. There was one DRS referral by the tourists against Paine in the morning session, but Astle’s suspicion of some pad before bat was proven a long way from reality by replays.Wade had suggested on the first evening he might be the one to push the game forward, but the day was not yet an over old when he knelt down to sweep Will Somerville, misjudged the flight and was bowled. Once he heard the sound of the off stump knocked back, he angrily swatting his bat into the ground.Head was a little more patient, corralled steadily by New Zealand from around the wicket, but he had made only 10 from 42 balls by the time he tried to cut a Matt Henry cross-seam delivery that was too close to his body and offered a thin edge behind to BJ Watling.Labuschagne, though, was not deterred, cruising through to his third 150-plus score of the Test season, and looking good for plenty more. He had one nervous moment near lunch when he inside-edged Astle just past the off stump, but otherwise radiated an air of security that has been rare for Australian cricket in recent years. The scoring rate was lifted by Labuschagne and Paine in early afternoon, as the SCG avoided the worst of hot temperatures of more than 45-degree C in western Sydney. But with Astle gaining extra turn and Wagner and de Grandhomme offering tight spells, Labuschagne was forced to slow right down in the 190s, with Paine even facing boos from the SCG crowd when he was unable to rotate the strike.Eventually, Labuschagne was able to squirt an edge past Watling’s gloves for the first double-century of his Test career. The innings brought a standing ovation from those in attendance and underlined just how much he had grown as a batsman and a cricketer since he first batted at No. 3 for Australia in the corresponding Test at the SCG against India last year.Whatever hopes Paine may have had for extending the partnership were ended when he failed to cover a de Grandhomme offcutter, and Astle soon followed up a sharply bouncing googly by flighting a legbreak nicely enough to coax Labuschagne into offering a leaping return catch.Pattinson was bounced out by Wagner, and Cummins flicked another Astle googly to Glenn Philips at short leg, before some brief Starc entertainment was ended by Wagner. This meant Australia’s last five wickets had gone down for 44, a reminder that Labuschagne’s feats were not achieved in a vacuum.Australia’s fielders were given plenty of reasons to be interested when Cummins’ first ball kept low and beat Blundell, before his second jumped up to hit the opener on the arm from a good length. There was remarkably calm progress form there until closer to stumps when Blundell looked to drive a fuller ball from Cummins and a noise saw Paine use the DRS after Aleem Dar denied the caught-behind appeal. A mark on the HotSpot looked visible but escaped the attention of Nigel Llong, and New Zealand reached stumps unscathed.

Fabrizio Romano shares Man Utd manager news on rumoured front-page target

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared a key Manchester United manager update regarding a rumoured front-page target to replace Erik ten Hag this summer.

Man Utd manager latest

The Red Devils picked up a good point against Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, drawing 2-2 at Old Trafford, but in truth it was another disappointing performance overall. Moments of magic from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo ended up being key, as was their opponents' wastefulness in the final third, but Ten Hag still finds himself under pressure to keep his job.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is seemingly eyeing replacements for the Dutchman, should he decide to make a change in the dugout at the end of the season, and Bologna boss Thiago Motta has emerged as an option, links which have been front-page news in Italy over the weekend. The 41-year-old has guided his side to fourth place in Serie A and on the cusp of Champions League qualification, and is one of the most exciting young managers in Europe currently.

He is far from the only target reportedly being looked at by United, however, with Brighton ace Roberto De Zerbi seen as an option to bring in, possessing Premier League experience and making the Seagulls one of the best teams outside the traditional 'big six', playing an exciting brand of football at the same time.

There have even been rumours of a move for England boss Gareth Southgate, should he decide to leave his current job after Euro 2024 this summer, with the 53-year-old having a good relationship with likely incoming new sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Fabrizio Romano drops Man Utd manager update

Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano provided an update on Manchester United target Motta, saying Juventus are also keen on acquiring his signature.

Seeing any team emerge as a rival to United has to be considered a blow when it comes to a possible successor to Ten Hag this summer, and Motta could like the idea of remaining in Italy moving forward.

Journalist James Horncastle, who is an Italian football expert, has described the former Barcelona midfielder as a "special" manager and this is exactly the type of profile of boss they should be looking at – a young option with fresh ideas. He prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation, looking to play attacking football that supporters enjoy, which would be an upgrade on Ten Hag's current fuzzy thinking.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since his takeover at the club, Arteta has rekindled a lost spark in Arsenal as the Gunners have put up two straight Premier League title challenges against Guardiola's well-oiled Manchester City sides. Due to his history with City, it has been reported that the eight-time Premier League champions will make a move for Arteta once Guardiola leaves the Etihad. The same has been predicted by former Arsenal and Chelsea star William Gallas, but he believes Arteta will turn down the offer in order to stay at Arsenal.

  • WHAT GALLAS SAID

Speaking to Lord Ping, Gallas said: "I think Manchester City could come in for Mikel Arteta when Pep Guardiola leaves, but I think Arteta will reject it.

"He has done so well with Arsenal and it looks like he is still committed for the long-term, he won’t give up that connection to the board. If City do come in for Mikel Arteta, he would reject it."
