Leeds monster sold by Radrizzani was later worth 1,900% more

Leeds United's current number one Illan Meslier has had mixed success on the pitch in the Championship since the club's relegation from the Premier League last season.

The French shot-stopper has kept 14 clean sheets in 32 league appearances. However, he has also conceded 2.50 more goals than expected based on the Expected Goals against him.

This shows that he has been solid at times, with a clean sheet almost once every two matches, but that his shot-stopping has let him down at times.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Whilst Meslier has had his struggles in the second tier, one former Leeds goalkeeper is currently playing week-in-week-out in the Serie A – Marco Silvestri.

Marco Silvestri's market value in 2017

Former Whites owner Andrea Radrizzani decided to cash in on the Italian shot-stopper in the summer of 2017 as he signed for Hellas Verona.

Transfermarkt valued him at just €500k (£428k) after he had spent three years in England with Leeds, having joined from Chievo Verona ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

Silvestri was the club's first-choice goalkeeper across his first two seasons in Yorkshire. The monster made 88 appearances in the Championship and kept 20 clean sheets.

Marco Silvestri

However, experienced former England international Rob Green was brought in to be the new number one for the 2016/17 campaign, and the ex-Norwich and West Ham United star kept 15 clean sheets in 46 league matches.

Silvestri, who was hailed as a "proven" Championship performer by Green, was then sold to Hellas Verona in 2017, having been displaced by the English titan over the previous nine months.

Marco Silvestri's soaring market value

The decision to sell the Italian titan turned out to be a blunder by Radrizzani as his value went on to soar as he established himself as a regular in the Serie A.

He made 115 appearances for Hellas Verona as he helped them to win promotion from the Serie B during the 2018/19 campaign and was then their number one for two seasons in the top-flight.

By December 2020, Transfermarkt had placed his market value at a whopping €10m (£8.5m). This means that his value soared by a staggering 1,900% from the €500k valuation he had at the time of his exit from Elland Road just over three years prior.

Shortly before that increase in value, Roberto Mancini named him in his Italy squad in October 2020, which highlights how impressive his performances for Hellas Verona were in the Serie A.

Silvestri then secured a move to Udinese in the summer of 2021 and has made 94 appearances for the Italian side in all competitions to date.

In total, the now-32-year-old has racked up 164 games in the Serie A throughout his career, and has been a first-choice option at that level in each of the last five seasons.

This suggests that Radrizzani made a blunder by deciding to sell Silvestri as the Whites could have benefitted from placing their faith in him and helping the 'proven' monster to develop further at Elland Road.

Instead, they sold him to Hellas Verona for an undisclosed fee, when his market value was at just €500k, and watched on as his stock soared whilst playing in a major European league.

Chelsea now ready to sell "monster" as Todd Boehly plots replacement

Chelsea are thought to be open to selling a recent signing at the end of the season, according to a new report.

Chelsea signings 2023/24

The Blues and Todd Boehly were once again busy in the transfer market last summer, bringing in multiple new players ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s first season in charge. They already appear to be planning for the summer as well, with Napoli star Victor Osimhen appearing to be a top target.

As can be seen, big money was splashed on a plethora of additions, however, that hasn’t improved the club’s fortunes in the Premier League with Chelsea on course to miss out on the top six once again.

They are in the final of the EFL Cup against Liverpool this weekend, but one player who will miss the Wembley showdown through injury may well end up leaving the club at the end of the current campaign.

Robert Sanchez could leave Chelsea

According to Football Insider, Chelsea have made a decision on the future of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, revealing he could already be set to exit Stamford Bridge.

“A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Chelsea plan to listen to offers for Sanchez, 26, who is now on the comeback trail after his last appearance against Everton in December 2023.”

In fact, Boehly and the Blues are plotting to sign a new first-choice ‘keeper in the summer, despite Dorde Petrovic impressing Pochettino in recent months. No names are mentioned, but it looks as if it could be a case of one in and one out in Sanchez, who is under contract until 2030.

The 26-year-old has made 16 top-flight appearances this season, keeping just three clean sheets and conceding 25 times.

However, he was hailed as a “monster” by former manager Graham Potter, who said during their time at Brighton in 2021:

“He is a monster in terms of his physicality. He’s not just big but he is powerful, he is fast. In terms of attributes as a goalkeeper, he has got everything to be a top goalkeeper. We have to keep helping him, supporting him. I thought he was really good. He made some good saves but also aerially helped out because Burnley challenge you in the box.”

As mentioned, he has been out through injury this year, so you could say it feels harsh making a decision on his future after just a few months of action. If Pochettino feels it is right, though, then Chelsea could grant him his wish with a new name in-between the sticks, making this one to watch over the coming months.

Leeds titan who debuted under Bielsa now plays in England’s 7th tier

Daniel Farke, who has brought through Archie Gray and Mateo Joseph as first-team regulars, is not the first Leeds United manager to place his faith in young players.

Former Whites tactician Marcelo Bielsa was willing to lean on academy talent in times of need to come in and do a job if injuries or other circumstances meant that they were needed.

The Argentine boss handed professional debuts to 17 young players during his time in Yorkshire, with current first-team gems Jamie Shackleton and Pascal Struijk among them, along with Championship stars Leif Davis and Jack Clarke.

Sunderland forward Jack Clarke.

Not every one of those 17 starlets has gone on to enjoy successful careers at the top level, though, unfortunately, and goalkeeper Will Huffer is one who has had to drop down to the lower leagues.

Will Huffer's Leeds United career

The English shot-stopper came up through the youth ranks at Thorp Arch before an injury crisis in the goalkeeper position provided him with an opportunity to impress.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Jamal Blackman, who were the two first-choice options in that area of the pitch, were both injured ahead of a clash with Bristol City in the Championship in November 2018.

Just days before his 20th birthday, Huffer was handed his first-team debut for the Whites against the Robins and produced a solid performance between the sticks, as you can see in the table below.

The 6 foot 4 titan kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win for Leeds in the second tier but it, unfortunately, turned out to be his only senior appearance for the club.

He made the bench, as an unused substitute, in eight matches throughout the rest of the Championship season. However, Huffer did not play a single match in any competition for the Whites before being released in the summer of 2020.

The young gem suffered from wrist and hip injuries ahead of his contract expiring that year, which meant that he did not have much of a chance to prove that there was a future for him in Yorkshire.

Where Will Huffer now plays

At the time of writing (14/03/2024), Huffer currently plays in the seventh tier of English football with Carshalton Athletic in the Isthmian Premier Division.

After being released by Leeds in 2020, the giant shot-stopper, who was brought through under Bielsa, spent six months in Non-League with Bradford Park Avenue before he secured a short-term deal with Bradford in January 2021.

Former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.

However, he did not make a single appearance for the League Two outfit in any competition before being released at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Huffer then spent time with Stalybridge and Burgess Hill in Non-League before his move to Carshalton Athletic on a free transfer ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Now 25, the former England U17 and U18 international still has time to work his way back up the footballing pyramid, whether that is up to the top tiers of Non-League – in the National League North/South or Premier or back to the EFL.

Hopefully, if it is what he wants to achieve, the former Leeds starlet will progress in the years to come and forge a successful career for himself between the sticks before he retires.

Report: Newcastle receive boost in pursuit of "excellent" transfer target

Newcastle United have been given a boost in their quest to sign an "excellent" player in the summer transfer window, with his current club potentially lowering their demands.

Newcastle could look to fill Botman void

The Magpies have suffered a season to forget overall, with their performances in both the Premier League and Champions League not up to scratch. However, injuries have been a fair excuse for Eddie Howe, with the manager constantly having to get by without so many key players available.

Newcastle have now received a fresh major blow with the news that Sven Botman's season is over after suffering an ACL injury, which is expected to keep him out of action for 6-9 months. Given the Dutchman's influence at the heart of the defence, it is a significant setback, and PIF could now look to sign another centre-back this summer.

ousmane-diomande-transfer-gossip-arsenal-sporting-edu-arteta-jurrien-timber

Plenty of potential targets have emerged recently, with Sporting CP pair Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande both linked with moves to St James' Park once the current campaign is done and dusted. Both are highly rated young players who could have big futures in the game, so they represent exciting options.

Someone who was backed to move to Newcastle earlier this season was Crystal Palace and England ace Marc Guehi, should he decide that this summer is the right time to move on to pastures new. Another Premier League player is also believed to be an option, with Nottingham Forest defender Murillo recently linked with a switch to the Magpies.

Newcastle given boost over "fantastic" target

According to a new update from A Bola [via Sport Witness], Newcastle remain keen on signing Inacio from Sporting in the summer window. Citing other sources, the Portuguese outlet stated that his current club could potentially accept €40m (£34.4m) plus €20m (£17.2m) in bonuses, rather than the upfront €60m (£51.7m) release clause that exists in his current deal. However, these bonuses would have to be considered realistically achievable.

It is also stated in the report that Sporting have already begun looking for replacements for both Inacio and Diomande, which could give the Magpies further hope of striking a deal for at least one of them.

jean-clair-todibo-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

Inacio could be a perfect signing for Newcastle at the end of the season, with so many positive attributes in his game, from quality on the ball to strong defensive work. He can also play at left-back if needed, which would give Howe more depth in that area of the pitch at a time when Dan Burn arguably doesn't represent the future there, considering he is 31 years of age and more of a centre-back by trade.

The Sporting ace has been hailed as an "excellent central defender" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and his stats in the table below sum up what an impressive season he is enjoying in the Primeira Liga:

The fact that Newcastle could strike a cheaper deal initially acts as an added bonus, and they should do all they can to snap up one of Europe's brightest young defenders in the summer.

What happened to the Nottingham Forest youngster who was ahead of Johnson

In recent years, Nottingham Forest have gained a reputation for developing youngsters, giving them first-team opportunities at the club before going on to achieve great things in professional football, whilst making the club a hefty profit.

Ryan Yates, the Reds' current captain after the loan departure of Joe Worrall to Besiktas, came through the Nigel Doughty Academy before forcing his way into the first-team picture in 2019 after multiple successful loan spells in the Football League at sides such as Notts County and Scunthorpe United.

Ryan Yates

Current Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash is another great example of the calibre of players who have come through the club's academy, with Cash transforming his game under former boss Sabri Lamouchi before earning a Premier League move to join Villa in a £16m deal back in 2020.

The club also sold Patrick Bamford to Chelsea for £1.5m back in 2012 – a nice figure for a youngster who had only featured once for the Reds' senior team.

However, 12 years on from the deal, the club may regret selling him with the striker going on to be successful in the Championship and Premier League – with the 30-year-old scoring 58 goals in 178 games for Leeds United.

All the players previously mentioned have all developed well, with the trio all enjoying success up and down England's football pyramid. However, the club made a brilliant call to sell a youngster from the academy back in 2019 after just a handful of first-team appearances.

Arvin Appiah's stats at Nottingham Forest

Winger Arvin Appiah came through the Forest academy just like Cash, Bamford and Yates – with the youngster having a lot of potential to be a success at the City Ground.

Appiah was a regular in Forest's academy sides, with the youngster featuring in competitions such as the FA Youth Cup for the Reds' U18s.

He quickly caught the eye with his pace and direct dribbling, with his performances earning him a first-team call-up for the EFL Cup tie away at Burton Albion in October 2018.

The forward came on as an 85th-minute substitute for his first-team debut, with Appiah managing to get on the scoresheet, reducing the arrears as Forest exited the competition at the fourth round stage.

His display at the Pirelli Stadium resulted in a spell of substitute appearances for the Reds. However, he had to wait six months for his first start for the club, with Appiah starting in the 3-0 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday, playing 69 minutes before being replaced.

Appiah only managed one other start for the club, with the winger making just eight first-team appearances for the club up until the end of the 2018/19 season.

In a shock move, the then 18-year-old departed the City Ground for £8m, joining Spanish second-tier side Almeria, just six months after signing a new four-and-a-half-year contract with the Reds. Fast-forward five years, and it was a move that was very smart business by the club.

Arvin Appiah's stats since leaving Nottingham Forest

Since his arrival in Spain, Appiah struggled to make a real impact and provide any sort of value for the hefty £8m price tag the club forked out on him.

During his first campaign with Almeria, he featured 21 times, scoring just once, with Appiah often utilised as an impact sub. His lack of game time subsequently led to a loan move to CD Lugo, where once more he was unable to find his feet, failing to score in any of his 13 league appearances and registering just one assist.

Despite his unsuccessful loan period at Lugo, Appiah returned to Almeria's first-team setup for the 2021/22 campaign, with the winger making 31 appearances – but once more failing to contribute with any sort of goal return, registering just three goal contributions all season.

His performances subsequently resulted in two more loan moves throughout the 2022/23 season to fellow Spanish sides CD Tenerife and Malaga, with Appiah evidently not up to the level required, with the Englishman making 21 appearances over the two spells, scoring just once.

After multiple unsuccessful spells in Spain, the now 23-year-old returned to England last summer on a loan deal joining Championship side Rotherham United for the current 2023/24 season.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Turk Al-Sheikh, Almeria's owner, has already admitted defeat over Appiah's signing back in 2019, claiming that the move for the Forest man is a "blot on a list of successes" at the club, with the winger's transfer value now just £170k as per Football Transfers, a staggering decrease from what the club paid for him five years ago.

His loan move to Rotherham has also been a disaster, with the winger making 20 appearances in the Championship so far this season, failing to score a single goal, with Appiah only starting four times in the league.

Given his disastrous last five seasons, coupled with the fact his contract is set to expire in the summer, it is highly likely he will be a free agent in the summer with Appiah on the lookout for his sixth club in just over five seasons.

Appiah, who was once seen as a greater prospect than Brennan Johnson sitting in the year above him in the academy, has gone backwards with the Wales international excelling at Forest before his mega £47.5m move to Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

Overall, the Reds conducted brilliant business in offloading Appiah in 2019, with the winger's fee going a long way to cover the club's FFP spending – allowing the club to invest in all areas, with the club reaping the rewards five years on from his departure.

Ratcliffe can fill Man Utd’s Scholes void by signing "one of the best"

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS at the helm, Manchester United are set to experience an extremely busy summer, with incomings and outgoings almost guaranteed.

Saturday’s latest 1-1 draw against Brentford highlighted the problems within the squad, with the midfield particularly struggling.

The Bees’ 31 attempts at goal underlined the lack of defensive support provided by the midfielders, but that has been a problem since the opening game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ratcliffe is also aware of the unreliable midfield, claiming that the team needs a Paul Scholes-esque player, which will be one of the main targets this summer.

Man Utd’s search for a new midfielder

According to reports from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, via Sports Witness, Man United are linked with a move for Joao Neves.

The Benfica wonderkid is set to be at the epicentre of a Premier League battle, with Liverpool and Chelsea set to rival United for his signature.

However, the midfielder has a huge release clause in his contract, with a fee of £103m set to be enough to secure his services this summer.

Although there are no reported concrete talks as of yet, the development of the Neves saga could get underway at the end of the campaign, without distractions on the pitch.

Man Utd could make Mainoo world-class by signing £34m "warrior"

The United target is thriving in the Premier League this campaign.

ByTom Lever Mar 26, 2024 Neves could be the next Paul Scholes

The Man United faithful have witnessed plenty of fantastic midfielders play for the club, but not many have been finer than Scholes.

Over 718 appearances for the Red Devils, Scholes cemented himself as a legend of the club, scoring 155 goals, with Sir Bobby Charlton describing Scholes as a “beautiful player to watch".

However, United haven't been able to replace the England international since he left in 2013, but funnily enough, Neves has plenty of similarities to the former United number 18, according to analyst Ben Mattinson, in regards to his “tenacity and technical ability.”

This season for Benfica, the 19-year-old has been a key player, playing 27 matches in the Primera Liga and scoring three goals, with one of those coming in last weekend’s 1-0 win over Chaves.

As you can see by the table above, it’s no surprise that Mattinson has also tipped the star to “become one of the best” midfielders in years to come, with his complete skillset making him stand out.

Neves’ ability to control the game and be technically secure regardless of pressure makes him very similar to Scholes, taking 106 touches, having a 91% pass accuracy, and making two key passes.

However, despite being just 5 foot 8, the Portugal international is also extremely impressive off the ball, winning 13 duels and completing six tackles.

It’s quite clear that Neves’ ceiling is extremely high, due to the fact that he can do everything, and has the energy to cover every inch of grass on the field.

In truth, if United were to sign the Portuguese maestro, Kobbie Mainoo and Neves could lockdown the midfield and dominate the Premier League for years to come, which must certainly excite Ratcliffe and the Red Devils faithful.

According to the Gunners have re-established contact with Bologna in their pursuit of Calafiori and following further discussions, the two clubs have reached closer to finalising a deal that has been in the works for several weeks. The transfer fee for Calafiori is expected to be in the range of €50-€54 million (£42m/$54.5m – £45.5m/$59m). While the exact details of the bonuses are still being negotiated, both clubs are optimistic about reaching a total agreement soon.

Calafiori is believed to have agreed to personal terms with Arsenal, including a five-year contract. The Gunners are hopeful that the 22-year-old's transfer can be completed before they embark on their pre-season tour to the United States on Sunday. The Italian club acquired Calafiori from Basel for £3.4 million last summer, and the Swiss club is entitled to 50 per cent of any profit made from his sale.

Jofra Archer encouraged to look on bright side after hard yards in New Zealand

Jofra Archer has been encouraged to keep a sense of perspective after a dispiriting tour of New Zealand. Archer finished with 1 for 75 in the first innings at Hamilton, taking his series tally to two wickets at 91.00 apiece.Archer arrived in the country with a big reputation having enjoyed an outstanding start to his international career, but he has found the combination of the docile pitches and unresponsive ball hard to overcome. But Stuart Broad, his vastly experienced colleague, urged him to reflect on what he has already achieved in his international career and look forward to the prospect of more helpful surfaces in South Africa, where England play their next Test series.”Jofra has been a bit disappointed because he’s used to making things happen in cricket,” Broad said. “Sometimes, away from home, the game isn’t played at the speed we’re used to in England. The excitement’s not there, the pace isn’t there and the nip’s not there. These pitches are tough work to get wickets on. You can’t expect to come and get five for 30 on pitches like this. I don’t think the Kookaburra ball is his best friend at the minute.”But it will be when he realises that not every away pitch is like this. I’m just encouraging him to look forward to South Africa. That’s a better place to bowl.”Archer’s impact at international level has been so dramatic that it is possible people forget how inexperienced he is. Before this tour, for example, he had played only 32 first-class games and he had never bowled with a Kookaburra ball. His first four Tests came in England, on relatively helpful surfaces and with a Dukes ball, and saw him claim 22 wickets at a cost of 20.27 apiece. Now Broad hopes to remind him of everything he has achieved in such a short space of time and persuade him to accept that such barren patches are inevitable.”He’s never experienced anything like it,” Broad said. “He’s played a lot of first-class Division Two cricket with the games in fast-forward. He said at Mount Maunganui that he’d never gone through a day without taking a wicket, but he’s still so new to this level of cricket.”He still judges himself on the wickets he takes but once he gets past 50 Tests he won’t do that, he’ll play on too many flat ones. His economy rate has been really good. His areas have been great.”I said to him today when he had a none-for, you’d take your World Cup and Ashes for a couple of games without wickets. You can’t get a six-for every time you step on the field. Just lower your expectations, enjoy being here and speak to someone in England who is cold in November. You’re playing cricket in New Zealand – it’s good.”
