Uncapped Leon Turmaine in Netherlands squad for India tour

Netherlands have included uncapped offspinner Leon Turmaine and seamer Sebastiaan Braat in their squad for their tour of India in February-March next year. Netherlands will play a T20I quadrangular series, involving Oman, Ireland, and Scotland in Oman, from 8 to 18 February before travelling to India to play a number of first-class sides.

Squads

For Oman tour: Pieter Seelaar (capt), Wesley Barresi, Ben Cooper, Ryan ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards, Timm van der Gugten, Fred Klaassen, Paul van Meekeren, Stephan Myburgh, Max O’Dowd, Shane Snater, Roelof van der Merwe, Tobias Visée, Sikander Zulfiqar
For India tour: Pieter Seelaar (capt), Wesley Barresi, Sebastiaan Braat, Ben Cooper, Bas de Leede, Scott Edwards, Vivian Kingma, Stephan Myburgh, Max O’Dowd, Hidde Overdijk, Leon Turmaine, Tobias Visée, Saqib Zulfiqar, Sikander Zulfiqar

County players Ryan ten Doeschate, Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe and Timm van der Gugten were all named in the T20I squad for the Oman tour, while Michael Rippon and Logan van Beek, who represent Otago and Wellington respectively in New Zealand’s domestic circuit, were left out.The decision is likely to have resulted from a scheduling clash with the Plunket Shield, New Zealand’s premier first-class competition, which is slated to run until March 20. While Rippon had played two ODIs for Netherlands, against Nepal, in August this year, van Beek hasn’t represented Netherlands in two years, having last played in a T20I against Bangladesh in the 2016 World T20.However, Netherlands will be bolstered by the presence of the county quartet, each of whom is seasoned in the limited-overs formats.None among ten Doeschate, van Meekeren, van der Merwe, van der Gugten, van Beek and Rippon was selected for the India tour, though. Travelling alongside the Braat-Turmaine duo are Hidde Overdjik (1 T20I), Saqib Zulfiqar (2 T20Is), and Sikander Zulfiqar (5 T20Is). Left-arm spinner Pieter Seelaar will captain both squads. In preparation for the twin assignments, a number of players will travel to La Manga in Spain for a training camp in January 2019.

Mental tweaks give Mahmudullah batting edge

The seasoned campaigner trades flamboyance for hard grind and the result is a marked improvement in his batting numbers

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur01-Dec-2018

Mahmudullah has become Bangladesh clutch-hitter at crunch moments. Since early 2016, he’s also matured into a batsman who can craft tough runs, the 30-40 extra runs, that often make the difference in limited-overs cricket. This approach hasn’t really helped his poor Test form.Until his two centuries in the last three Tests, he had averaged 24.75 in 26 innings and his place was the only one, among other senior batsman, that was under scrutiny. When he failed twice in Sylhet against Zimbabwe last month, it appeared as if the pressure had consumed him.At the time, he wanted to bring “mental adjustments to his batting.” One way of doing that was “being positive.” In Mirpur against Zimbabwe and now in this series, he’s left the ball as well as he’s played them, an aspect that hasn’t been a hallmark of his game yet. Here, Mahmudullah’s discipline lasted for 242 deliveries, his longest innings in international cricket till date. His previous longest innings was the 177-ball he needed to make his maiden Test century against New Zealand in 2010.”I have been thinking from the second Test against Zimbabwe, I decided to take care of my mentality,” Mahmudullah said. “I wanted to remain positive, nothing more than that. I just wanted to score runs. Having said that, I was quite lucky [today] as well. A few decisions went my way and an edge didn’t carry to the slip. I have a lot of areas to improve, I have to keep working hard.”Against Zimbabwe, his unbeaten 101 revived Bangladesh from 25 for 4, eventually paving way towards setting a huge target. Against West Indies, he had to fight through 19 overs along with Shakib on the opening evening. Then on the second day he survived two lbw reviews, a catch that almost carried to Shimron Hetmyer at slip and another that Shai Hope dropped at slip. Then he saw Shakib and Liton Das tear into the West Indies attack. When he moved to the 90s, he saw No. 10 Taijul Islam batting more comfortably. This must have been humbling for someone used to dominating bowling attacks.”The ball wasn’t coming on to the bat. When Shakib and I were batting on the first day, we had to work hard,” he said of his grind. “I think we hit only a couple of boundaries. I wanted to be positive, but take minimum risks. The new ball was easier to bat against, which gave us more scoring options. It starts reducing as the ball gets older. We were looking to utilize the bad balls.”Ahead of the Test, Shakib spoke in details about his desire to see batsmen stick to their natural game. Shakib was indirectly asked about Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar, and without taking names, he made it clear that his stroke-players had to stick to what they do best.Mahmudullah, though, sees it differently. He isn’t fretting over not hitting fours and sixes anymore. He doesn’t mind playing dot balls and grinding down bowlers. The big-hitter has added another chapter to his batting, and it can only mean good news for Bangladesh.

"Versatile" Spurs player could leave in January as club plan "shock" move

One "versatile" Tottenham player could leave in the January transfer window as European suitors plan a "shock" move for him, according to reports.

Postecoglou's transfer plans for the winter

Injuries to star men Micky van de Ven and James Maddison, who are both expected to be out till 2024, have dealt a huge blow to Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou. In the duo's absence, Tottenham have suffered two consecutive Premier League defeats after previously going on an imperious 10-game unbeaten run.

The Lilywhites undeniably miss van de Ven's pace and comfort playing in Postecoglou's high defensive line, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was unable to replicate Maddison's creative spark in their 2-1 defeat to Wolves last Saturday.

Suspensions for defenders Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie have also exposed Spurs' serious lack of depth, prompting reports that Tottenham could look to solve that issue in January. Centre-back is apparently the number one priority, with Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly being targeted by Tottenham alongside Everton ace Ben Godfrey.

Despite the short numbers, reports have also claimed that Tottenham are willing to sell Hojbjerg in the winter, with news also coming to light on defender Eric Dier and his future at the club.

Eric Dier could leave in January

The Englishman, who has been forced to fill in at centre-back in the absence of van de Ven and Romero, was heavily out of favour under Postecoglou. Dier didn't play a single league minute this season until Tottenham's 4-1 defeat at home to Chelsea, with the 29-year-old's contract also set to expire in 2024.

Perhaps surprisingly, a report by Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke has claimed the "versatile" Dier could leave Spurs in January regardless of Postecoglou's short numbers.

Sharing news from a 'well-placed source', the reporter claims Dier is likely to leave in January, or failing that in the summer when his contract expires. This comes as Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, now spearheaded by Spurs' all-time record goalscorer Harry Kane, plot what's been described as a 'shock' move for Dier.

Dier praised by Conte

The former Sporting Lisbon ace struggled in part against Wolves, and it appears his time at Tottenham could be coming to an end sooner rather than later. He has been a phenomenal servant in past seasons, though, with former Spurs head coach Antonio Conte calling him a "reliable" player with the potential to become fantastic.

"What I can tell you is that Eric has improved a lot since I arrived," said Conte on Dier.

"We are talking about a reliable player, 100 per cent focused in every game. He is not a player who alternates with a big performance then a drop. He is providing great continuity in his role and playing every game. I can also tell you he is a really good guy, with great will, desire to work and improve. He knows he has space for improvement and I see every day in his eyes the desire to become stronger, to become a top defender."

Man Utd may extend "world class" talent’s deal just to sell him for cash

Manchester United have an interesting plan in place regarding the future of a "world-class" current player at Old Trafford, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man Utd players set to leave in 2024

The Red Devils continue to have an unpredictable season, with performances and results fluctuating between impressive and woeful, and Wednesday's 3-3 draw away to Galatasaray in the Champions League perhaps summed them up as a team.

It was another poor night at the office for Andre Onana, who twice allowed free-kicks to beat him too easily, and his struggles sum up the lack of impact from United's summer signings. Mason Mount has found it hugely difficult to make an impression, with the Englishman not helped by injuries, while Rasmus Hojlund is yet to score in the Premier League despite his impressive tally in Europe.

The January transfer window will allow Erik ten Hag the opportunity to bring in new signings, but plenty of United players will be out of contract in the near future and we could see somewhat of an overhaul in 2024. The likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Antony Martial all see their deals expire in 2024, while Donny van de Beek is thought to be certain to leave in Janary.

Man Utd make Anthony Martial decision

According to a new report from Football Insider, Manchester United could now trigger Martial's one-year extension but with the intent to then sell him for a fee.

"Man United could now activate Anthony Martial’s one-year contract extension clause and then let him go, sources have told Football Insider. The Red Devils could move to prolong the 27-year-old’s deal in order to protect his value and prevent him leaving for free in 2024."

Ratcliffe may well decide to splash out on a new forward next year, claims the report, and that would involve selling Martial either in January or next summer. This is a decision that would make perfect sense for United, ensuring that they don't simply lose Martial for nothing after splashing out so much on his potential back in 2015.

The Frenchman has always been a big talent at Old Trafford, with former Red Devils striker Robin van Persie even describing him as "world-class" on a talent level, but it feels like the right time to move him on, considering his influence has waned as the years have passed.

Fabrizio Romano adresses Man Utd contact for rapid striker target

He could now be available in January.

ByCharlie Smith Dec 1, 2023

This season, Martial's statistics highlight his lack of playing time, with only three starts coming his way in the Premier League in 2023/24, and while he is still only 27 years of age, he has suffered lots of injuries and arguably isn't the player he once was.

United need to move on from the forward now, bringing in fresh faces who represent the future, so it is now a case of triggering his contract and then receiving as much money for him as possible.

Chelsea hold Nico Elvedi transfer talks after worrying Reece James update

Chelsea have held "conversations" with the agent of a 50-cap international defender following some worrying news on star defender Reece James and his latest injury.

James facing three months out for Chelsea

The Blues' torrid 2-0 defeat away to Everton at Goodison Park last weekend, their second loss in as many Premier League games, was further marred by James being taken off after just 26 minutes with a problem.

Chelsea later confirmed that the right-back suffered his seventh hamstring injury in just three years, with a report by The Evening Standard sharing that James is now facing three months out.

Club expecting Chelsea move for star who's "top of the tree with Bellingham"

Pochettino really wants him now.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 14, 2023

Indeed, he looks set for an extended spell on the sidelines due to his hamstring yet again, coming after he missed eight league matches with the same issue earlier this campaign.

The 24-year-old is also facing a race against time to prove his fitness to Gareth Southgate as Euro 2024 looms next year, with Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier looking ahead of him in the pecking order.

"Of course for us he is an important player, one of the best full-backs in the world," said Pochettino on James' latest injury setback (via The Mirror).

"It is really disappointing because after 15 or 20 minutes we were playing well and I think this type of circumstance makes us change, because of course Malo Gusto is recovering from his injury. We hadn't given away many chances and then you need to move things to make some changes."

Reece James

With the January transfer window fast approaching, it's been reported that Chelsea are looking to sign a new centre-back, but James' absence has apparently made them contemplate new full-back additions as well.

Chelsea hold discussions over Elvedi

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Chelsea are now eyeing a move for Borussia Monchengladbach ace Nico Elvedi. The Switzerland international, who has 50 caps for his country, is said to be attracting the attention of chairman Todd Boehly and co as a "potential" James replacement.

His versatility is a particularly big draw, as is the player's agent Pini Zahavi, who the west Londoners have an excellent relationship with. According to the same report, Chelsea have held "conversations" with Zahavi over a move for Elvedi.

Monchengladbach would also be happy to sell as soon as January and recuperate a good fee for the 27-year-old, who they apparently value at around £30 million.

Elvedi can play across the defensive line as a full-back, centre-half and on the left. The Swiss ace has made 12 Bundesliga appearances this season, where he's even managed a goal and assist in that time.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly

Former Monchengladbach boss Adi Hutter, speaking to the press in 2021, hailed Elvedi as a player who goes "under the radar" after a brilliant performance against former Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

"Nico Elvedi has played with incredible composure and consistency for months," said Hutter.

"He often goes under the radar as a defender, that's why I wanted to highlight his amazing performance on Wednesday night against Robert Lewandowski."

The France international has been sidelined for a few weeks with a muscle issue he sustained in the 4-3 defeat at Chelsea. However, the 31-year-old says he is "resting well" and suggested he may be back for for Erik ten Hag's men before the end of the season.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have been beset by injuries this season, especially in defence; with the likes of Varane, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans all having spells on the sidelines. That has not helped the Red Devils defensively but having the former Real Madrid man back available will be a big boost in their bid to qualify for Europe.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Varane recently admitted he has "damaged his body" because of repeatedly heading the ball over the years. The centre-back, who said he was on "autopilot" after playing for France at the 2014 World Cup with a concussion, has called for greater protection and better awareness on this matter.

He told L'Equipe: "My seven-year-old son plays football and I advise him not to head the ball. For me, that's essential. Even if it doesn't cause any immediate trauma, we know that in the long term, repeated shocks can have harmful effects. Personally, I don't know if I'll live to be 100, but I do know that I've damaged my body. The dangers of headers need to be taught on all amateur football pitches and to young people."

Barroca atribui revés do Botafogo a abalo emocional e afirma: 'Não vou transferir responsabilidade'

Spotlight on Keaton Jennings as England ponder whether to stick or twist after Barbados debacle

Denly waits in the wings but will England abandon investment in opener who has struggled against seam?

George Dobell in Barbados29-Jan-2019Like the hunt for the Holy Grail and the lost city of Atlantis, England’s search for opening batsmen has gone on so long, you wonder if they exist. For while Rory Burns impressed in Barbados, the worries over Keaton Jennings are mounting. He is still yet to reach 50 in the 11 Tests he’s played outside Asia, with his apparent struggles against seam bowling causing concern ahead of the Ashes, which is now just three Tests away. All of which leaves England with a dilemma ahead of the final two Tests of their Caribbean tour. In short, do they twist or stick with him?The short-term answer may well be to be stick. It is only four Tests since he made a fine century in Galle and he has proved extremely useful at short-leg. He is a popular and positive member of the squad and there will be much goodwill and patience extended to him.Just as pertinently, there are not a host of candidates knocking down the door to take his place. The only realistic alternative on this tour is Joe Denly, who has some experience as opener but has more recently batted at No. 3 and No. 4 in Division Two of Championship cricket, while Jason Roy, who does not open in Championship cricketfor Surrey and did not open on the Lions tour for England, might also force his way in over the coming months. There is a serious possibility Denly could open in Antigua and provide a secondary spin-bowling option. But the fact that England are now considering non-specialists to attempt one of the most specialised jobs in the game, underlines the extent of the problem. They have tried more than a dozen county openers and, to greater or lesser extent, found them all wanting. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the County Championship, squeezed into early and late summer where conditions disproportionately assist medium-pace swing and seam bowling, is not producing opening batsmen who are able to withstand Test quality pace bowling. It is hard to be wildly optimistic of Jennings’ ability to deal with Australia’s seamers. But with modern selectors quite rightly keen to provide their players with a decent run of games in which to attempt to find their feet – most openers have had seven or eight Tests to do so – they might be slightly reluctant to bring in Denly into the side now as it could leave them obliged to persist with him in the Ashes. Really, in retrospect, this wasn’t as well-balanced a squad as it may have appeared when it was selected.Jennings is only one of England’s issues ahead of the Antigua Test, which starts on Thursday. The pitch looks, at this stage, surprisingly green though it is expected to be dry and good for batting. As a consequence, England may well want to play an extra seamer but be reluctant to lose the second spinner. Pressure on Adil Rashid, who neither threatened or offered control in Barbados, and Ben Foakes, who is unfortunate enough to be playing alongside other capable keeper-batsmen, is particularly intense. Chris Woakes, who did not train on Tuesday, would appear to be out of the mix, but Stuart Broad and Jack Leach are right in it.As things stand, it seems likely England will revert to a five-man attack containing four seamers and one spinner.Meanwhile Burns, one of the few positives from England’s batting in Barbados, suggested they may try and target Roston Chase more in future.”It’s a lesson,” he said of the Barbados defeat. “With a four-man pace attack and one spinner can we put the spinner under more pressure. We can make the seamers come back and work harder.”They bowled very well in the first innings. I was out there for 25 balls and I can’t remember getting a ball to hit, really. We weren’t able to transfer the pressure back onto them and absorb the pressure.”For us it’s about how do we transfer that pressure. It’s only going to help having had a view of their bowlers. But they’re a very good attack.”
