Clarke caps homecoming with career-best 7 for 55

Rikki Clarke bowled with masterful precision and subtlety from the Vauxhall End to claim career-best figures of 7 for 55

Tim Wigmore at Kia Oval19-Sep-2017As The Oval clock ticked over to 5 o’clock, Rikki Clarke raised the ball aloft and led Surrey off, saluting the home crowd as they lauded his career-best figures. It was a moment that both the player and spectators had long thought would never come. Many members at this hallowed ground have memories of Clarke emerging from Surrey’s academy, spotty but brimming with an effervescent talent. His third County Championship match, 15 years ago, brought a sublime 153 not out against Somerset at Taunton. Add in the nonchalant catches in the slips and the pace and bounce he generated from his 6ft 4in frame, and Clarke was immediately marked out as a player of supreme promise. It took only 10 first-class matches for England to be persuaded to select him in an international squad.Over the following years, the alluring prospect of Clarke providing England with runs, wickets and catches – as he did in two accomplished Tests in Bangladesh in 2003 – gave way to frustration at why such a talent was stagnating. And so Clarke left his home county in 2007, taking up the Derbyshire captaincy in an attempt to reinvigorate his career. The move failed, spectacularly. By the summer’s end Clarke had given up the job and then quit the county for good. But then came a move to Warwickshire, where Clarke became a cricketer of the calibre and consistency that those who had watched the promise of those early performances for Surrey expected, even if an England recall never quite came. After a decade of trophies and fulfilment at Edgbaston, notwithstanding this summer’s struggles, Clarke returned home. First, he signed a two-year contract beginning next year. Then, after Dominic Sibley moved to Warwickshire, the two were involved in a mid-season loan swap, and Clarke was thrust back into Surrey’s team.He returned to find a completely new role. It was not merely that Clarke had aged. Where once he was a wayward cricketer, now he was recruited to bring solidity. And while he had spent his first Surrey career in the top six, Clarke has returned to a spot of No.8, and even nine, which rather seems to belittle his 16 first-class centuries. But while Clarke was away, he developed into a highly skilled bowler, adept at cutting the ball from an awkward height. Where he had once sprayed the ball in pursuit of wickets, he returned with the patience to locate a probing line and length remorselessly.Over 16 fulfilling seasons in professional cricket, never have those qualities been as persuasive as today. On a pitch on which Somerset had lost only one wicket in the morning session, and even that on the brink of lunch, Clarke jagged the ball spitefully both ways at an awkward length. The Oval is not the sort of ground on which many bowlers produce a spell of 5 for 32 in ten overs, never mind doing so immediately after lunch on the first day. But Clarke bowled with masterful precision and subtlety from the Vauxhall End, eliciting edges from George Bartlett and Edward Byrom with away movement in between locating in-swing to trap James Hildreth lbw, uprooting Tom Abell’s off stump and then, most emphatically of all, finding a full length to Peter Trego. A rash drive ensued; it missed the ball, which instead dismantled the off and middle stumps. Remarkably, it was Clarke’s first Surrey five-fer.Nor was he done yet. If a ten-over spell had revealed admirable durability in a man who turns 36 by the end of the month, the impression was confirmed when, after tea, he plucked out Dom Bess’s drive in his followthrough and then produced a menacing spell of bouncers to Steven Davies as early evening shadows extended onto the outfield, which eventually culminated in Davies picking out fine leg. In decimating Somerset’s top order, Clarke had topped 400 first-class wickets, and 100 for Surrey, and encapsulated why he has been among the most valuable players in the shires in the last decade. On this evidence, he could yet remain so for several years to come. Not that Clarke was the only player to enjoy being back at The Oval. Davies played sumptuously on his first-class return, after his winter move to Taunton, marrying the finesse and fluency of his dreamy late cuts and drives with fortitude to withstand Clarke, and stabilise Somerset from the debris of 138 for 6. If their eventual 269 remains far below the recent norm at The Oval, the pitch offered Somerset’s seamers abundant movement during their 14 overs at Surrey. Somerset may yet have a working total. The morning had brought no indication of what Clarke would unleash. Instead, Marcus Trescothick unfurled all his trademarks – the crunching drives, the cuts scythed between point and deep extra cover, and the nonchalant pulls – reserving particular wrath for Sam Curran. The unusually warm applause that greeted an opponents’ half-century reflected the stead in which Trescothick is held in the shires and gratitude that, 14 years after pillaging 219 against South Africa on this ground, he has signed up to another year in county cricket.

Newcastle: Joachim Andersen Saga Could Go "To The Wire"

Newcastle United's potential summer move for Crystal Palace centre-back Joachim Andersen could go "to the wire", according to a key update from journalist Ed Aarons.

How old is Joachim Andersen?

The defender is now 27 years of age and playing like someone at the peak of his powers, having become an undisputed key man for the Eagles since arriving from Lyon back in 2021.

Andersen has forged an excellent centre-back partnership with Marc Guehi at Selhurst Park, and he played a key role in steering Palace away from the Premier League relegation zone last season, starting 32 matches in the competition and showing impressive consistency.

Read the latest Newcastle transfer news HERE…

Andersen has been linked with a switch away from the south London club this summer, however, with Newcastle one of those who are believed to be interested in signing him. The Magpies are eyeing up a new centre-back addition to partner Sven Botman, in order to make them even more of a defensive force moving forward, while Tottenham are also thought be in the picture.

Are Newcastle signing Andersen?

Taking to Twitter, Aarons provided an update on Newcastle's pursuit of Andersen, admitting that an approach hasn't been made yet, but a late move for him in the summer transfer window isn't out of the question:

"Still no official approaches for Joachim Andersen despite Newcastle and Tottenham's interest in Palace defender. Could be one that goes to the wire."

Andersen could be a fantastic signing by Newcastle if they end up getting a deal over the line, with the Dane ticking so many boxes, in terms of what they are looking for this summer.

matty-bondswell-eddie-howe-in-the-pipeline-premier-league

Firstly, he has Premier League experience in abundance now, having racked up 97 appearances in the division, so there wouldn't be the risk of signing someone who needs time to adjust to the pace of the league. At 27, he is also at a brilliant age to come in and make an immediate impression, and there is no reason why he and Botman couldn't be the centre-back pairing for the next five years or so.

Andersen is incredibly strong in the air, averaging 3.3 aerial duel wins per game for Denmark at the 2022 World Cup – 2.6 per match in the Premier League, as well as 5.8 clearances – but he is also an excellent ball-playing defender who is capable of spraying long passes and starting moves.

On the face of it, he would be a perfect summer signing by Newcastle, but the fact that a bid hasn't yet been table does suggest that they may having another option in mind. That being said, they have missed out on Monaco's Axel Disasi, who has joined Chelsea instead, and if they did make a late-summer move for Andersen, there is no reason why he wouldn't be a big success for the Magpies.

Admittedly, he may not arrive on the cheap, with his current Palace deal not expiring until 2026, but the money is available to be spent at St James, and they should use every penny of it to make them as strong as possible heading into 2023/24, with the Denmark international hailed as "brilliant" by Micah Richards.

Cummins to skip India T20Is

With a few of their key fast bowlers nursing injuries in the run-up to the home summer, Australia have decided to rest Pat Cummins from the T20I series against India with an eye on his workload management in the build-up to the Ashes. The fast bowler is not carrying an injury but will return home after the fifth ODI in Nagpur on October 1 to “refresh, both mentally and physically” before the start of the Sheffield Shield season.”Pat has played a considerable amount of cricket this year after a long period away from the game due to injury,” national selector Trevor Hohns said in a statement.”His body has handled the return to international cricket well, but we believe the best plan for him ahead of the Ashes Series is to return home to refresh, both mentally and physically, before he prepares for Sheffield Shield cricket.”Cummins’ main focus will be on preparations for the Sheffield Shield, which gets underway on October 26, but he could play for New South Wales in the later stages of the JLT One Day Cup, if they make it to the finals on October 19 and 21. A replacement for Cummins in Australia’s T20I squad will be named at a later date.Cummins’ fitness struggles since his Test debut in November 2011 had forced Australia’s selectors to take a long-term view regarding his workload in Tests and first-class matches, although he was picked in limited-overs squads subsequently. He made a comeback in December last year – after missing the 2015-16 season due to a stress fracture to the back – and has since played 22 of Australia’s 27 international matches across formats, and also featured in the IPL.In March, he was called up as Mitchell Starc’s replacement for the final two Tests against India – after Starc suffered a stress fracture to his foot – and made a Test comeback after a gap of more than five years in Ranchi. He also led the pace-bowling duties in the Tests in Bangladesh, following Josh Hazlewood’s injury in Dhaka, and ended up bowling 63 overs in the two-match series, the second-most for Australia after offspinner Nathan Lyon.David Saker, Australia’s bowling coach, had last week stated that Cummins’ workload would be assessed on a game-by-game basis.”At this stage we’re planning for him to play all the games,” Saker had said. “We’ll look at [resting him], it’s obviously been brought up between all of us. We know that his workloads are up there, but we know it’s an important series. It’s Australia v India, you don’t get any bigger than that. He’s really determined to play well over here. It’ll be game-by-game basis, we’ll play it by ear.”Hazlewood is still recuperating from a side strain he suffered in Dhaka, while Starc is in the final stages of recovery from the foot injury. There is a likelihood, however, that Starc, and injured quick James Pattinson, could play in the later stages of the JLT One Day Cup, although the hope is they will be fit to take part in the Sheffield Shield matches before the first Ashes Test, which starts from November 23 in Brisbane.

Hearts Can Sign ‘Sensational’ Nieuwenhof Partner At Tynecastle

Following a few weeks without any signings to begin the transfer window, Heart of Midlothian are looking set to make up for lost time.

Recent arrivals include goalkeeper Michael McGovern from Norwich City on a free transfer and midfielder Calem Nieuwenhof from Western Sydney Wanderers as Steven Naismith gears his squad up for the new season.

Frankie Kent could soon be the third player to arrive at Tynecastle after their bid for the defender was accepted by Peterborough United, however Naismith should also be moving forward in a bid to sign Jamie McGrath.

Could Hearts sign Jamie McGrath?

At the start of the month, The Daily Record reported that Hearts were weighing up a move for McGrath during the transfer window in a bid to bolster their attacking options.

With just a year left on his current deal, Naismith could perhaps submit an offer to Wigan Athletic in the hope that they accept, especially considering that this may be the final chance for them to bring in a decent fee for the player.

He knows the Premiership well, having had stints at both St Mirren and Dundee United, enjoying a loan spell at Tannadice last term and the 5 foot 9 gem could turn into a shrewd investment.

How did Jamie McGrath perform last season?

Despite the Arabs being relegated from the Premiership following a woeful campaign, the Irishman was arguably their only bright spark.

He managed to register 12 goal contributions across all competitions while showcasing his creative ability by ranking first in the squad for big chances created (five) and key passes per game (1.6) and should he join the Edinburgh side, Naismith could forge a wonderful midfield partnership between him and new arrival Nieuwenhof.

The Australian tends to operate in a defensive midfield role, controlling play from deep and this could allow McGrath much more freedom, as he is usually deployed just behind the striker.

The 22-year-old had a fine season in the A-League during 2022/23 as he displayed his impressive passing capabilities, ranking fifth in his squad for accurate passes per game (41.4) while also making 0.8 key passes per game, showing that even though playing from a predominantly deep position, he was still able to create a few forward passes.

This bodes well should he go on to play behind McGrath, and his defensive ability will also be key for any potential partnership to sparkle. The Australian ranked first in the Western Sydney squad for tackles per game (3.4) as he demonstrated his tenacious side and this will stand him in good stead due to the physical nature of Scottish football.

Jamie McGrath

McGrath could be given immense freedom further up the pitch knowing full well that Nieuwenhof is roaming behind him sweeping up any danger with ease.

Much was anticipated of the 26-year-old when he joined the Latics from St Mirren, with journalist Josh Bunting waxing lyrical about the midfielder.

He said: “Jamie McGrath is a sensational signing for Wigan Athletic, think that’s one of the best signings of the window , really liked him whilst he was at Dundalk, good on the ball , aggressive and direct and has a very good shot , he’ll score from belters at the DW I’m sure of that.”

It hasn’t quite gone to plan since then for McGrath, making just four appearances for his current side, and Naismith could offer him a fresh start should he lure the player north of the border this summer.

Wolves: Lopetegui Could Now Sign "Monster" £17m-rated Moutinho Replacement

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly eyeing Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez, as Julen Lopetegui seeks a midfield rebuild this summer.

The Spaniard bid farewell to Portuguese duo Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho this window, and will now look to find reinforcements to fill the void left by the former Molineux maestros.

Could Wolves sign Guido Rodriguez?

As reported by journalist Cesar Luis Merlo this week, Wolves are eyeing the LaLiga gem, who remains under contract at Betis until next summer.

Merlo confirmed the Old Gold’s interest in the 29-year-old midfielder, claiming that negotiations are ‘underway’ between the two clubs, over the player valued around £17m by FootballTransfers.

While he added that the deal isn’t close to being finalised, the Midlands outfit's interest comes at a time when Betis may prefer a sale than for the player to depart as a free agent next year.

How good is Guido Rodriguez?

It’s integral for Lopetegui to identify a sufficient replacement for the departed duo Neves and Moutinho, who were key figures in Wolves’ journey in the Premier League.

The Spaniard could land the perfect solution to the two exits in obtaining Rodriguez, who was identified as a “monster” by analyst Marcus Bring for his exploits in LaLiga.

Signed by Betis from Mexican side America back in the 2020 winter window, the Argentine could be on the move this summer, with a move to the Premier League a possibility.

Heralded for his defensive contributions, the midfielder could be the ideal replacement for Moutinho, who closed the lid on his five-year stay in the Midlands at the expiration of his contract at the end of last season.

While the long-serving 36-year-old veteran was primarily deployed in central midfield rather than the deeper areas that Rodriguez inhabits in Spain, the averages recorded by the Argentine last term suggested that he could be a sufficient ball-playing replacement.

As per FBref, the 29-year-old maintained a pass completion rate of 86.7% in LaLiga last season, as well as making an average of 4.17 final third passes per 90 to showcase his assured presence in the central channel.

Moutinho recorded similar averages to the World Cup winner, maintaining a completion rate of 80.4% in the Premier League and averaging 5.31 final third passes per 90.

Their numbers signify that the Betis enforcer could be a like-for-like trade for Lopetegui’s side, as a player with similar efficiency in distribution.

The most prominent area of Rodriguez’s game is his defensive contributions, averaging a monstrous 3.60 tackles per 90 in LaLiga, ranking him in the top 2% of midfielders in the league, via FBref.

Moutinho fell short of the 29-year-old machine in such areas, averaging 2.58 tackles for Wolves, as well as recording 0.91 interceptions to the Betis star’s 1.32 per 90.

Possessing the innate balance between defensive and distribution strengths in the engine room, Lopetegui could fill the vacancy left by the Portuguese veteran in the middle of the park.

It’s expected that the Midlands side will have to make additional sales to make such moves in the window, despite accumulating around £80m in departures so far, only time will tell if the deal will prevail.

Postecoglou Working As If £86m Star Stays at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou are "working on the assumption" that Harry Kane stays at the club next season amid interest from Bayern Munich, according to journalist Alasdair Gold.

Is Kane leaving Spurs?

Postecoglou has a difficult job on his hands next season at Tottenham, but it will be a lot easier if Kane is still in north London.

There is still huge uncertainty over the England captain's future amid persistent interest from Bayern Munich, who have recently launched a third £86m bid for Kane.

The fact that Kane captained Spurs during their 5-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in a pre-season friendly on Sunday 5 August and scored four goals against the Ukrainian side has raised the hopes of Tottenham fans desperate for Kane to stay.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

In recent hours, it has been reported the Lilywhites have rejected Bayern's latest offer for Kane which may provide some fans with a lot of optimism over Kane's future.

According to journalist Gold though, Tottenham are preparing for the new season under the assumption that Kane stays at the club, and will simply react to the unfolding situation should things change.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold stated: "From what I understand, everyone seems to be working to the assumption that at the moment he [Kane] stays, and if anything else changes that's what they work to.

"That's very much what Postecoglou's saying as well. This isn't me, you know, saying anything like amazing. It's exactly how Postecoglou is treating it. It seems to be the vibe everyone is working to, and it seems to be the players as well is that he's here now, he's a Spurs player, let's crack on planning as if he's there, and if that scenario changes then we deal with that."

He added: "Which is not a good way to operate, to be honest. It's not and that's why, you know, Postecoglou will certainly want a resolution sooner rather than later, so he can really know exactly what's shaping up next."

Kane's four-goal contribution against Shakhtar again highlighted his significance to this Tottenham team and Spurs would certainly miss him hugely next season should he leave for the Bundesliga champions.

Kane managed 30 goals last season in the Premier League despite featuring in an underwhelming Tottenham side that lacked attacking ingenuity. The thought of him playing in an attack-minded Postecoglou team will give many opposition defenders sleepless nights.

However, if Spurs leave making a decision too late in the transfer window, they may be left with little time to bring in an adequate replacement for their star man.

Who are Tottenham signing?

Spurs' busy start to the transfer window has naturally slowed down in recent weeks, but that does not mean that Postecoglou is done exploring the transfer market.

Tottenham made the loans of Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro permanent, before moving to sign Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon early in the summer.

This has since been followed by the signing of young Blackburn centre-back Ashley Phillips who is seen as a player for the future in north London at just 18-years-old.

Phillips will be joined shortly by another centre-back with Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven soon to be confirmed as a Tottenham player in a £43m move. The Dutch defender attended Spurs' clash with Shakhtar and is expected to complete his medical soon.

Spurs are also finalising a deal for young Argentine Alejo Veliz from Rosario Central after having agreed to meet his £13m release clause, although the forward could be loaned out.

Nottingham Forest: £120k-p/w star now "allowed" to leave

Nottingham Forest target Lucas Digne will be 'allowed' to leave current employers Aston Villa this window to seek a new challenge, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Lucas Digne moving to Nottingham Forest?

According to Telegraph Sport, Digne has come up in discussions between Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa regarding Wales international Brennan Johnson this window, who is a transfer target for the latter.

Nevertheless, the former Everton ace's £120,000 per week pay packet is said to be 'prohibitive' in negotiations and the Tricky Trees would need to try and convince Digne to take a significant wage cut or talk Aston Villa into sanctioning a loan deal for the 30-year-old.

Last season, Digne featured 32 times in all competitions for Aston Villa, registering two goals over the course of the campaign, as per Transfermarkt.

The Daily Mail report that Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are also keen on bringing Digne to the Gulf region this summer as the nation continues to boost its footballing reputation.

Napoli have also shown a 'tentative interest' in Digne, though his wages have made any notion of the Serie A champions being able to do a deal more complex.

In a separate piece by The Daily Mail, Napoli could look to draft in Digne as a replacement for Mario Rui if the 32-year-old is moved on at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Jones has signalled his belief that both Digne and his teammate Philippe Coutinho will be allowed to depart Villa Park this summer.

Jones stated: “I don’t have great expectations for Digne or Coutinho to remain at Villa beyond this transfer window, but like other players in this squad, you need offers to land before we genuinely know how Villa view the situations.

“I understand that both would be allowed to move on at this stage, but of course, all parties need to find a satisfactory resolution to their problem.”

What next for Aston Villa?

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery will be keen to continue building on his impressive debut campaign at Villa Park and he has prepared his side well for the new term by adding Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres and Youri Tielemans to the fold this window, as per Transfermarkt.

According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa are now keen to bring Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams to the West Midlands this summer and would reportedly be willing to activate his £25 million relegation release clause.

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

One outlet in Spain claim that Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos is on the radar at Villa Park and Aston Villa have plans to submit a €15 million bid for the Spain international despite his recent contract renewal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Free agent Adama Traore is believed to be a target for Aston Villa in an unexpected potential swoop, with Emery aiming to add some pace in the final third of the pitch, as per Football Insider.

Czech publication Sport via The Daily Express claim that Manchester United backup goalkeeper Matej Kovar is wanted by Aston Villa to provide competition for Emiliano Martinez and Robin Olsen.

Umar Akmal 'regrets' media outburst against Mickey Arthur

The Pakistan batsman said he was unaware he had breached a PCB code when he made allegations against the coach in the media. However, he has not withdrawn his complaints

While Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal stands by his words against head coach Mickey Arthur, he has admitted that he might have been wrong in approaching the matter in the manner he did – a public outburst in a fiery press conference last month. In his response to the second show-cause notice issued by a three-man PCB committee, Akmal said he wasn’t aware his actions were a breach of the players’ code. The tone of Akmal’s response was significantly more conciliatory than earlier statements he had made on the subject. In a vague explanation, Akmal wrote that he “unaware” about any breach of code, and did what he did “unintentionally in the heat of the moment”. A source close to the player confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the batsman still held his ground about his claims about Arthur but “regretted” going to the media to talk about his fallout with the coach. The committee was formed to probe Akmal’s allegations that the head coach had used abusive language with him. The claims are yet to be verified, but the PCB found him to be in breach of its code of conduct despite being a non-contracted player. According to one of the committee members, Amjad Hussain – who is the PCB’s media director – players who are not centrally contracted with the PCB but are part of the domestic circuit are still compelled to follow the players’ code of conduct which is enforced at every level.Akmal had promised to apologise to Arthur should the committee find him guilty, but also made it clear he expected the same from Arthur if the verdict was in his favour. Calling himself a national cricketer who had “produced excellent results for Pakistan”, he said that the law did not allow any person to hurt the feelings and self-respect of another individual. He concluded by expressing full faith in the PCB to resolve the matter efficiently, as it was one “of respect, dignity and pride of Pakistan and its nation”.

Transfer insider shares Paqueta claim he’s "heard" at West Ham

Journalist Dean Jones has provided an update on the future of West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

The midfielder is the subject of heavy interest from Manchester City.

What is the latest news regarding Lucas Paqueta?

The player has become a primary target for Pep Guardiola.

According to a report from The Athletic, the current Premier League champions are exploring the possibility of a deal for the Brazilian, who joined from Ligue 1 outfit Lyon in the summer of 2022 for a fee of £51m.

According to FootMercato journalist Santi Aouna, the Citizens have already seen two verbal bids rejected for the midfielder, with the most recent bid being £88m. The Hammers want more, however negotiations remain ongoing and both parties are confident that the deal can be completed, with the player eager to join the current Champions League holders.

Paqueta impressed at the London Stadium last season despite a slow start, making 43 appearances across all competitions and registering five goals and seven assists as he became a crucial part of the side that brought West Ham their first European trophy since 1965.

Man City are eager to add the player as they look to replace Ilkay Gundogan who departed this summer on a free transfer to Barcelona after seven years in Manchester. The German midfielder was crucial in the sides treble hunt, producing many moments of magic at crucial points, with the most memorable being his brace in the Manchester Derby FA Cup final.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones revealed that West Ham were losing hope in keeping the midfielder around, with their frustration growing after already losing Declan Rice this summer:

He said: "The frustrations around West Ham are very real – just as things were looking better on the transfer front they have been hit by a new wave and that’s with the Paqueta interest. He's become a fan favourite over the course of last season and to lose him on top of Rice feels shattering, even if things are going better now in terms of incomings.

The threat is real though and I have heard West Ham are taking it seriously enough to be thinking about how they will have to react in the market if this one does go against them being able to keep him.”

What is next for West Ham this window?

The Hammers are looking to spend some of the money they have brought in this window.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has undergone his medical ahead of his £30m switch to the Hammers. The club had previously seen two offers rejected for the England international but have now managed to reach an agreement to sign the 28-year-old.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

The club have also an agreement in principle with Manchester United for defender Harry Maguire for £30m. Personal terms are still to be agreed with the defender who was originally believed to want to stay at Old Trafford this season, however that situation seems to have changed now.

The London club have also announced the signing of Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez from Ajax for a fee of £35.4m. The midfielder is the sides first confirmed signing of the summer, and is expected to be the sides Declan Rice replacement.

The side are also reportedly entering the race for Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun, as they look to replace Gianluca Scammaca who joined Atalanta earlier this window. The report states that the Gunners are asking for £40m, and the Hammers would face competition from Monaco for the USA international's signature.
