Mudou tudo: amistoso do Botafogo será contra o Rio Branco, no Estádio Kléber Andrade

Agora, será contra o Rio Branco, no Kléber Andrade.

Rookie creates history with selection for Tasmania

Talented wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine has made history today by becoming Australian domestic cricket’s youngest-ever contracted player.

John Polack14-Jun-2001Talented wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine has made history today by becoming Australian domestic cricket’s youngest-ever contracted player. As part of the initial group of nineteen players signed by state team Tasmania for the 2001-02 domestic season, 16-year old Paine has become one of the first beneficiaries of the introduction to the game of a rookie contract system. In announcing its initial list of seventeen fully contracted players and two rookies, the Tasmanians have elected largely to retain their faith in the squad that last season carried them to a third-placed finish in the Pura Cup and produced their best Mercantile Mutual season in recent memory. It’s a balanced squad that contains six batsmen, six bowlers, five all-rounders and two wicketkeepers. They have also still left themselves room to move to re-sign the likes of Mark Atkinson, Mark Colegrave or Ben Targett, the three players from last season’s list who have thus far been overlooked for new deals. Although local conjecture has it that it is more likely that their attention will be focused in the short term upon luring Western Australian Michael Dighton, Queensland’s Matthew Pascoe, and/or the ACT’s Andrew James to the state.All-rounders Brad Thomas and Adam Polkinghorne, batsman Graeme Cunningham, and fast bowler Shane Jurgensen would also be likely to come under serious consideration following appearances in the senior team last summer. So far, the only new name to be added the core of fully contracted players is outstanding young all-rounder Shane Watson. Having moved to the state from Queensland midway through 2000-01, Watson had not been tied to an official contract before he made the decision last month to sign a three-year deal with the Tigers. The remaining sixteen on the list – including Gerard Denton, who is in the midst of embarking on another comeback following the onset of a succession of debilitating back injuries – have all previously been signed by the state. To that end, it is Paine’s selection which serves as the most eye-catching facet of this announcement.By any measure, the teenager already has a glittering list of accomplishments behind him. He has accumulated first grade experience at – not to mention a first grade century for – the University club in Hobart. He has also captained his state at Under-15 and Under-17 level. He became a member of its Under-19 team at the age of just fifteen, and has been the vice-captain of the Australian under-17 side. But his official inclusion among Tasmania’s elite core of players at such a young age is arguably the most exciting step of all.The state’s selectors are understood to have no inclination to promote Paine to their first eleven in the immediate future. Nor do they see him as a substitute for Sean Clingeleffer, their current first-choice wicketkeeper and a brilliantly adept young gloveman in his own right. But his selection as one of the first beneficiaries of the rookie contract system offers a clear indication of Tasmania’s intention to use the new programme to provide encouragement to players who may otherwise have been unable to win formal recognition from the state’s senior administrators and coaches.Under the direction of Chief Executive Officer David Johnston, the Tasmanian Cricket Association has been a strong supporter of the introduction of the rookie concept – a system designed to assist the states recruit and retain previously unsigned players under the age of 23. Its choice of 19-year old batsman George Bailey, like Paine a multi-talented sportsman, is another shrewd selection in that it is now likely to help convince the Launceston teenager to devote his sporting focus exclusively to cricket. The Tigers have until 29 September to fully finalise their new squad. The list of players with Tasmanian state contracts for 2001-02 is: Sean Clingeleffer, Jamie Cox, Gerard Denton, Michael Di Venuto, Andrew Downton, Andrew Dykes, Brett Geeves, Dene Hills, Scott Kremerskothen, Daniel Marsh, Scott Mason, Todd Pinnington, David Saker, Shannon Tubb, Shane Watson, Damien Wright, Shaun Young.Rookie contracts: George Bailey, Tim Paine.ACB contract: Ricky Ponting.

Villa could sign new Mellberg in Szalai

Aston Villa could sign Dean Smith’s own Olof Mellberg in Fenerbahce powerhouse Attila Szalai.

What’s the story?

The Hungary international has firmly established himself as a key part of the Turkish giants’ line-up since joining them in the January transfer window, playing every minute of their last 14 league games.

Hungarian publication Blikk claimed that Dean Smith’s side have joined the race to sign the centre-back this summer, with Newcastle and Leicester also said to be in the running.

Villa’s new Mellberg

Dubbed as “exemplary” and with the “most voice in training” by Fenerbahce boss Emre Belozoglu, the 6 foot 4 Szalai possesses all the raw physical attributes to become a real force in the Premier League much like Mellberg was.

The great Swede became a real icon at Villa, playing seven seasons for the club and being appointed as captain by David O’Leary during the 2003/04 campaign.

As well as being one of the team’s biggest leaders, Mellberg was a defensive stalwart, a “dominant figure” who “rarely made a mistake as he produced commanding displays as a matter of course”, as outlined by the club’s official website.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-aston-villa-transfer-rumours-and-news-copy-copy” title=”Latest Aston Villa transfer rumours and news”]

Szalai possesses much of the same defensive nous, averaging an impressive 1.4 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Turkish Super Lig – both numbers are higher than any of Villa’s centre-backs in the Premier League this season.

Standing at an imposing 1.92m (6 foot 4), Szalai boasts that same intimidating presence Mellberg had in his prime at Villa Park; and given how quickly he has hit the ground running at Fenerbahce, he may fancy his chances of taking that next step up this summer.

It’s no surprise that Johan Lange is eyeing the 23-year-old as a potential transfer target.

Meanwhile, Villa could sign Jack Grealish’s perfect partner in this star…

Routledge was shocking in loss vs QPR

Swansea City’s automatic promotion hopes are all but over after a 1-0 defeat against QPR at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The late concession, combined with Watford’s 1-0 win against Norwich City, means that Steve Cooper’s side have to win all three of their remaining games, and hope that the Hornets lose all three of theirs if they want to finish in second place.

The Swans were second best for much of the game, with QPR hitting the woodwork twice before finally taking the lead with 89 minutes gone, with Lyndon Dykes smashing home from Albert Adomah’s clever through ball.

One man who particularly disappointed for Swansea at the Liberty Stadium was Wayne Routledge.

As per SofaScore, the 36-year-old veteran would earn a 6.8/10 rating for his performance, with only Ryan Bennett (6.6) and Kyle Naughton (6.6) rated lower of the players who started the game.

The winger, who was featuring up front in the absence of Andre Ayew, blew a great opportunity to give Swansea the lead in the first half when he hit the post, whilst he was extremely wasteful when played through on goal by Jamal Lowe, as his heavy touch allowed the goalkeeper to snatch the ball when he was one-on-one.

During the game, the veteran attacker would have just 28 touches of the ball and would only manage to complete 7/13 of his passes, resulting in a less than impressive 54% pass accuracy rate.

Not only is this far below the 64% rate he has averaged in the Championship this season, but it was also the fewest passes played by anyone on the pitch, with both goalkeepers completing twice as many.

Routledge was caught offside on three occasions which highlighted his lack of attacking positioning, whilst the fact that he managed to lose possession on nine occasions, despite being involved so little, will surely frustrate Cooper.

[freshpress-quiz id=“532484″]

To compound a miserable display, Routledge would win just 4/11 of his duels during the game and failed to hit the target with any of his shots, so you could definitely argue that he let Cooper down when the manager was relying on his experience to help see his side through what was a must-win game for the Swans.

And, in other news… Winter could sign Swansea their ideal Ayew heir in £225k-rated beast, Cooper would love him

Man Utd fans fume as Moss appointed

Many Manchester United fans have been left to fume as utdreport relayed the news that Jonathan Moss has been appointed as the referee versus Burnley.

Moss was the official when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team lost 2-0 at home to the Clarets in the 2019/20 term and has also sent Marcus Rashford off before in a game against Sean Dyche’s men (World Football), so there is certainly some bad blood between the supporters and the official going into the match on Sunday afternoon.

Nonetheless, the Red Devils will be looking to grab all three points and thus cement their place in the top four of the table in the Premier League, coming off the back of a very impressive comeback away at Tottenham Hotspur.

If Solskjaer’s men can grab another impressive result this time around, finishing in the top two could start to look like something of a formality.

West Ham insider drops Moyes update

According to a report by club insider Claret & Hugh, West Ham United manager David Moyes has ‘no intention’ of leaving east London this summer to manage his former club Celtic despite links to the Glasgow outfit, coming after the Scotsman revealed that he had talks on the matter with David Sullivan last month.

Insider drops Moyes claim

Moyes has enjoyed a great season with West Ham United overall, with the Hammers on course for European football despite operating with a comparatively limited budget.

The Irons sold Sebastien Haller in early January without bringing in a recognised striker to replace him, but the signing of Jesse Lingard appears to have masked that issue.

As a result of his job overall with West Ham, Moyes has apparently been attracting interest from Celtic – but club insider Claret & Hugh has revealed that the 57-year-old holds no interest in leaving London this summer.

Transfer Tavern take

This comes after he confirmed a conversation with Sullivan over the matter last month, and it’s safe to say this comes as a boost for West Ham given the job he has done this term.

Speaking to the press, Moyes also confirmed that he has an automatic 12-month extension clause in his contract if the Irons finish above 13th, something which looks a formality.

As Claret & Hugh share the latest on his future, it looks as if he isn’t going anywhere any time soon – something which is likely to please Hammers everywhere.

In other news: West Ham have already agreed a summer signing, find out more here.
