Ornstein: Arsenal duo staying this season

Two of Arsenal’s coveted midfielders are expected to remain at the Emirates Stadium this season despite speculation over their futures…

What’s the word?

The Athletic’s David Ornstein relayed a fresh update to supporters after Gunners boss Mikel Arteta played down reports linking Emile Smith Rowe to Aston Villa and Joe Willock with a return to Newcastle United.

“Without a question. Yes. He (Smith Rowe) will stay here. 100 per cent,” claimed the 39-year-old.

“Well, he (Willock) wasn’t involved today because he had a little groin issue. He trained yesterday really well but we didn’t want to risk him. Joe is part of our plans, he’s our player and in the time that he is here, we will try to make the most out of him. He had a great experience on loan. He was, I think one of the most important players for their survival.”

During the off-season so far, Villa have submitted two bids for the Croydon-born playmaker, which have both been rejected by the Arsenal hierarchy, whilst Steve Bruce has been keen to bring Willock back to St James’ Park after scoring eight goals on loan there last season.

Hale End talent

This will come as hugely exciting news for everyone associated with the North London giants.

Smith Rowe is one of Arteta’s most creative and dynamic options in the current squad. He can play on either flank and through the middle, and with no new no.10 signing in sight, he could benefit from further playing time next season.

The £36m-rated dynamo provided four goals and seven assists across all competitions in 2020/21 and topped the charts for key passes per league game (1.4), via WhoScored.

Arteta is clearly a massive fan, having dubbed him “extraordinary” back in January and after scoring in their pre-season opener this week, many fans are demanding that he sign a new contract, as revealed by football.london. They will be buzzing that he’s certainly here to stay in 2021/22.

Similarly, it’s positive news that Willock is in line for more game time and quite understandably too as both Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard have returned to Real Madrid, whilst Granit Xhaka is expected to join AS Roma this window.

After bagging eight goals from midfield in a poor Magpies side, the 21-year-old could be an intriguing weapon under the Spanish coach next term.

The presence of Smith Rowe and Willock in Arteta’s first-team is another fantastic sign for the Gunners’ Hale End academy, too.

This latest information, via Ornstein, should have many in N5 absolutely thrilled.

LFC fans react to Ben Davies exit rumour

A number of Liverpool fans have been reacting to a rumour suggesting that Ben Davies could move to Celtic in the summer transfer window.

The Reds had a disastrous 2020/21 season at centre-back, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all missing the majority of the campaign through injury.

Their lack of availability meant that both Davies and Ozan Kabak were signed in the winter transfer window, but it has been a frustrating time for the former.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Davies didn’t get a single minute of action after joining from Preston North End and there are now doubts surrounding his future at Anfield.

According to the Daily Mail [via Anfield Watch], Celtic are interested in signing the defender this summer, having also shown an interest back in January. A season-long loan move is mooted, with a host of Championship clubs also believed to be keen.

– Eu me sinto muito bem aqui. E quero retribuir isso com títulos, porque um clube como o São Paulo merece conquistar troféus sempre. A sua história mostra isso. Temos a responsabilidade de ser campeões todos os anos, e espero que em 2017 seja assim – finalizou Cueva.

Leeds make offer for Matthew Anderson

Leeds United have made an offer for Celtic starlet Matthew Anderson as Graham Smyth drops a major transfer update.

What’s the story?

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist has now revealed that the Whites have made a bid for the 17-year-old, who they want to add to the Thorp Arch ranks this summer.

Smyth added: “The Whites’ first team recruitment will take priority, however, before attention can turn fully to what they need below the senior squad.”

One for Leeds’ future

At only 17, Anderson won’t be someone to come straight in to Marcelo Bielsa’s first team and immediately command a place in the Premier League. However, given the kind of player he has been described as, and the rave reviews he has earned, he seems destined for the top.

As per Leeds Live, Anderson is “a dynamic and attack-minded full-back who could provide a real attacking outlet on the Whites left flank for years to come. The Whites, who also hold an interest in another Hoops youngster Leo Hjelde, reportedly feel Anderson could be an invaluable addition the Thorp Arch ranks this summer.”

Blantyre Soccer Academy chief Jimmy Whelan has talked highly of the potential that the teenager has, even comparing him to an already established Premier League star. He said: “It’s fantastic for us as a club, and it’s great to see Matthew doing so well. He really is one to watch, he is the real deal, and could be like Kieran Tierney.”

While big-money signings and high-profile additions will naturally get fans excited, bringing in young talent who could end up being superstars in years to come is a strategy which can capture the imagination too.

As a young, “attack-minded” full-back, the 17-year-old Anderson is the kind of signing which will surely have Bielsa excited at the prospect of moulding him into one of the Premier League’s finest. The Leeds manager must duly be buzzing with Smyth’s latest transfer update.

Meanwhile, Bielsa can finally wave goodbye to this man…

Will Kristoffer Ajer stay at Celtic?

Have Celtic been given a boost in their hopes of keeping one of their star players at the club?

It’s been widely expected that Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer will depart Parkhead for a move south of the border.

However, the Hoops could actually stand a chance of keeping Ajer at Paradise.

What’s the word?

Ajer has been linked with Norwich City and Newcastle United in recent weeks with the Magpies sending scouts to watch him in the closing weeks of the season.

Unfortunately for Newcastle’s, they look like they could be priced out of a deal.

That’s because the Daily Record report that Celtic are seeking around £16m for the defender.

Newcastle were hoping to sign him for £8m but only have £12m to spend this summer according to the Daily Mail.

With that in mind, it elevates the chances of Ajer remaining in Glasgow unless the Hoops dramatically decrease their valuation, which they have very little incentive to do.

Huge boost

With Celtic so disastrous from a defensive point of view this season, losing Ajer would only make them worse.

To suggest the Bhoys were abject at the back would be putting things lightly. They shipped 19 goals throughout their Europa League group stage campaign, shipping a haul of eight goals in two matches with Sparta Prague.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-mcgregor-mccann-tierney” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

They also conceded 16 more goals than Rangers in the Premiership. Celtic were still potent in attack with Edouard notching 22 strikes but without Ajer, they’d suffer considerably.

He has been the glue holding this team together, a man who has led from the front with his performances and served as an example to the rest of the team.

To lose a player like this, therefore, would be incredibly bad news to supporters. They’ve already suffered enough this term without one of their most influential leaders departing so easily.

It bodes well for the Celtic fans that Dominic McKay and the club’s hierarchy are being so resolute over the price tag.

They lost Kieran Tierney for £25m only for him to now be touted at around £70m. Ajer is a player with a particularly high ceiling so Celtic are doing the right thing in holding out for more money.

The Norwegian is in the final year of his deal but such is his importance at Parkhead that they cannot let him go without a fight.

At the moment, it looks like he could stay in Scotland unless Newcastle finds more funds. This should be a boost to everyone associated with Celtic, including their angsty supporters.

Without him, results on the pitch would surely only get worse.

Newcastle can hire Bruce successor in Edin Terzic

Newcastle United could hire a dream replacement for Steve Bruce in Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic.

What’s the story?

While Bruce appears to have inspired the Magpies into some late-season form in the Premier League, it appears that hasn’t stopped Mike Ashley from eyeing potential replacements, with the current Newcastle boss having just a year left on his contract.

According to German publication Bild, the Tynesiders are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in potentially hiring Terzic, who took over the reins as interim Dortmund boss after Lucien Favre’s dismissal in December.

The 38-year-old has guided Dortmund to a top four finish and qualification to the Champions League, as well as lifting the DFB-Pokal recently.

Dream Bruce replacement

ESPN’s Derek Rae has claimed that Terzic ‘brings a Klopp-like intensity’ to the dugout, whilst Slaven Bilic has previously suggested that the 38-year-old “has everything” needed to become a top manager.

Furthermore, Dortmund’s former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat raved about about Terzic to The Times as he said: “(He has a) strong personality, with top-class analytical qualities and tactical understanding, clear about what kind of football his teams are best suited to. By that I mean he is not narrow-minded. He’ll be brave. He’ll make the difficult decisions.”

Just as much as the bravery, it’s his willingness to get his players playing on the front foot which could have Newcastle fans buzzing at the prospect of seeing him manage the club.

Many of the Dortmund players have taken to the 38-year-old, with Giovanni Reyna hailing him as someone who “lets me be free as an attacker.”

Reyna’s midfield teammate Mahmoud Dahoud also added to the list of Terzic’s admirers, saying that he is a “passionate” and “crazy” manager who “works meticulously” to ensure that his teams play great football.

Klopp has caught everybody’s attentions with his manic presence on the touchline, and it appears that Terzic – who worked under the current Liverpool manager in the past – is also cut from the same cloth. Having someone as animated as him in the dugout could resonate with the kind of passionate support that Newcastle fans bring to the table both home and away, and he seems a perfect fit for the Magpies.

Warriors warm up for final with tidy dress rehearsal

Western Warriors warmed up for the final of the Champions Cup tomorrow with an easy 108-run win over Central Districts in Perth today.Going into the game CD had the chance of playing in the final themselves if they could beat their Australian hosts, but a disappointing batting effort, where the top order again failed the side, meant CD were never competitive. In the field, CD did a superb job in holding the Western Warriors to a total of 257/8, when it seemed that a score in excess of 280 was on the cards. But in the end it didn’t matter as CD couldn’t capitalise with the bat.Earlier, the New Zealand team’s bowlers kept the pressure on after the Warriors made a sound start with the bat.Marcus North especially, showed out with some solid batting and kept the top order moving before being bowled around his legs by off spinner Glen Sulzberger for 56 runs scored off 80 balls.New player Peter Worthington marked his debut for the Warriors with a half century scoring 54 off 63 balls. In the latter part of the innings the restriction of Justin Langer to an effort where he took largely singles and twos played a major part in Western Australia being held to only 257. Langer was out trying to hit out for 60 off 63 balls. In the last 10 overs the home side was only able to score 50 runs.CD captain Jacob Oram and Sulzberger, the two players with One-Day International experience this summer, bowled especially well. Oram bowled his 10 overs and finished with one for 39 while Sulzberger’s nine overs produced two wickets for 38.But the younger bowlers, the players who did so well in the New Zealand Shell Cup campaign, were all too expensive and lacked control at the vital stages.CD’s batting response started out at a good clip but the steady loss of wickets and a run rate requirement that hovered between 5.5 and six runs per over kept the pressure on the home side.Opener Jamie How impressed with another solid innings where he wasn’t afraid to loft the ball and he scored 39 runs. But the early loss of David Kelly dragging a ball from Brad Williams onto his wickets and the frustrating batting of Craig Spearman, most under-mined the CD hopes. Spearman, playing some outstanding shots got cleaned out by a full-pitched ball having scored 13 runs off 13 balls.Ben Smith could work no miracles and he departed for a duck while Oram just looked like he was getting into a good scoring groove when he was undone by a superb yorker from Matthew Nicholson. Out for 25 off 27 balls his departure signalled the beginning of the end.Sulzberger having lost Mark Douglas to a run out was soon gone also, to a superb close quarter catch taken by Simon Katich. The tail was wrapped up fairly quickly as the home bowlers feasted on the CD carcass.Williams, bowling with some fire and pace took two for 22 from five overs, North had two for 20 from four overs, Hogg two for 33 from 6.2 while Stuart Karppinen had two for 40 from 10 overs bowled on the trot.It was a comprehensive Western Warriors win and one that should see them favoured to complete the tournament with a victory tomorrow.

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

Danny Mills has dropped a big claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United as an update emerged involving Mike Ashley.

The Lowdown: Ashley releases statement

The Guardian have recently reported that Ashley released a powerful statement this week after HMRC quietly discontinued a long-running investigation into the tax affairs of the St James’ Park club.

As per the Shields Gazette, Newcastle and its chief executive have also accused the Premier League of what they believe to be anti-competitive behaviour in their decision-making process on the proposed deal with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group.

They are looking to take the Premier League to court over the matter and have also taken on an anti-competition case given to them by the Newcastle Consortium Supporters Limited (NCSL), with the EPL given fresh legal papers as Ashley looks to force them to wave through the bid.

The Latest: Mills reacts to Ashley activity

Mills, who is now a pundit after playing for the likes of Leeds United and Manchester City in his career, has since given his thoughts to Football Insider on Ashley’s latest activity, and his view on the potential takeover on Tyneside:

“It’s a case of Mike Ashley being desperate to sell and doing everything he can to get his money.

“But I think he’s right, it does need to be investigated as to why.

“There is the golf super league with Saudi Arabia, we’ve seen all the boxing going on over there as well and other sports.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a reason why they weren’t allowed to take over.

“There’s no better time with all the issues surrounding the so-called ‘big six’ and those smaller clubs can say ‘Hang on a minute, how can you allow this to happen to these other clubs and let them spend what they want but you’re not letting us compete?’

“It isn’t really fair. It’s almost like it’s a monopoly on who can do what they want and spend what they want.”

The Verdict: Ashley seems desperate

Given that there is already an arbitration hearing to take place between Newcastle and the Premier League, it seems as if Ashley is already starting to feel desperate by taking them to another legal battle to try and claim damages.

What the result of the arbitration case would be remains unclear, but the report that the businessman is trying to at least get some compensation from the failed takeover bid suggests that he may not be confident about getting a positive outcome from the saga.

In other news, find out what big claim another pundit has made on the potential takeover!
