Maguire and Zaha sagas reveal major shift in Premier League power structure

[ad_pod ]

Since time immemorial the biggest clubs have cherry-picked the best players from those traditionally deemed to be smaller in stature than them.

It’s a long-established and fundamental law from the jungle and this law applies even if both clubs involved share a division.

Examples of this are a thousand-fold but given that Manchester United have this week finally completed a two-year chase for Harry Maguire, while Arsenal have spent most of their summer knocking on Crystal Palace’s door asking the same question about Wilfried Zaha’s availability, perhaps looking back to the mid-noughties is apt.

In the summer of 2004 Wayne Rooney was England’s golden boy, a phenomenal talent of such rarefied brilliance that nobody doubted he was destined for the very top. A mere month after he excelled at the Euros Manchester United swooped with a bid just shy of £30m.

If nobody doubted his genius similarly everybody was seemingly on board with this. It was the way things were. A natural progression. The best players needed the biggest stages.

All told for such a high-profile development it was a relatively straightforward move and this despite the fact that Rooney was a born and bred Evertonian.

“I’m excited to be joining a club as big as Manchester United. I feel this can only improve my career,” the player said on his unveiling.

Eighteen months later Arsenal flexed their might and standing and also indulged in a spot of Premier League shopping for a boy wonder.

Their purchase of Theo Walcott was generally met with approval by the general public who delighted in the prospect of one of England’s brightest hopes being coached by Arsene Wenger. If Southampton were presumably aggrieved to lose such an exciting teen so prematurely – Walcott was just 16 at the time of the switch – what could they realistically do about it?

Arsenal were Arsenal. Southampton were Southampton. It was the law of the jungle, the inevitable circle of life.

Fast-forward to the present day and the Gunners have this time failed in their efforts to dislodge a lightning quick winger from a club considered to be their inferior.

After seeing an initial bid of £40m – to be paid in instalments – for Wilfried Zaha rebuffed by the Eagles they returned with an improved offer of £55m plus Reiss Nelson on a season-long loan but again they received short shrift.

Palace viewed Zaha to be a pivotal figure and the price was £80m. Take it or leave it.

Not even the player’s desire to move on from Selhurst Park swayed matters so the Gunners left it, or at least turned their attentions to Lille’s Nicolas Pepe instead.

As for United’s long-standing interest in Harry Maguire, they were informed last summer by Leicester City that a fee it the region of the £75m paid by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk would be needed to prise him away from the King Power Stadium.

A year on déjà vu occurred and Leicester were seemingly immovable on their £80m asking price. So it was that a world record fee was agreed. So it was that Leicester could – subjectively – laugh all the way to the bank after pocketing an obscene profit on a player they purchased for just £17m two seasons ago.

The difference between now and 2004 of course is very simple. Money. An abundance of money for all.

In 2018/19 Leicester and Crystal Palace earned £237,543,293 between them and that staggering sum equates to power.

For all of the hand-wringing – some of which is entirely justified – at the increasing insanity of transfer fees and the mind-blowing wealth circulating around the highest echelons of football, surely this is a welcome by-product of both? Clubs are no longer pushed around. Clubs can afford to stand their ground.

The law of the jungle is changing.

Perhaps this shift can prevent the elite from widening the yawning gap between the top bracket and those that fall beneath them.

Newcastle fans love swoop for Andy Carroll

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to their hunt for a striker, as the club are making medical checks on former Magpie Andy Carroll, with one report even claiming personal terms are already agreed for a return to Tyneside.

It’s always special when a local hero comes back to their hometown club, and it looks like the 30 year-old could be about to come “home”, as many of the Toon Army are putting it.

According to The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, the club are in discussions over a swoop for the free agent, making fitness checks after he underwent ankle surgery earlier this year.

The report claims Steve Bruce is a “big fan” of Carroll, who of course made his name on Tyneside before he got his big move to Liverpool back in January 2011.

Oliver Kay of The Times has since added to the reports, claiming personal terms have been agreed on an initial one-year deal.

Newcastle are of course in need of a striker. Joelinton has arrived this summer while Dwight Gayle looks certain to play a role after returning from a loan spell at West Brom, but the departures of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon still leave Bruce a little light in the position.

And fans would love to see Carroll be the one to fill that void, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…

Newcastle fans respond to Jonathan Afolabi speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to Pundit Arena, Newcastle United are one of a number of clubs considering a move for Jonathan Afolabi.

The 19-year-old is available on a free transfer this summer after leaving Southampton at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Pundit Arena claim that the teenager’s performances for Republic of Ireland’s Under-19 side at the recent European Championships have led to a host of attention.

Indeed, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Reading have been listed as possible suitors, in addition to ‘clubs abroad’.

Newcastle are very much in the hunt, though, with the Magpies said to have been impressed with Afolabi’s form this summer.

We want much better: Tottenham fans hate link with full-back Sakai

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports News, Tottenham Hotspur are considering a summer swoop for Marseille right-back Hiroki Sakai.

The 29-year-old, who made 32 appearances for Marseille last season, is a 56-time Japan international.

Capable of operating on either side of the back four, Sakai has reportedly emerged as a viable target for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

However, the report goes on to claim that Spurs are concerned over the defender’s age and would rather sign players under 23.

It does seem a strange one, although Sakai has been to two World Cups with his country and has made 122 appearances for Marseille in all competitions.

It is shaping up to be a very busy transfer window for the Champions League finalists.

However, it would be fair to say that the London club’s fans are not interested in a swoop for Sakai ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Verdict: Should Southampton swoop for Joe Aribo this summer?

[ad_pod ]

According to The Express, Southampton have joined the hunt for Charlton’s Joe Aribo, with Arsenal and Manchester City also interested in handing the 22-year-old a chance in the Premier League.

The midfielder has been a vital cog in Lee Bowyer’s promotion-chasing Addicks side, scoring 10 goals and chalking up five assists in all competitions, although his contract expires this summer, meaning his current employers can do very little to stop him seeking pastures new.

A dynamic, pacey number 8, the London-born ace deserves the challenge of playing in the Championship at least, although he could do one better with any of the aforementioned top-flight sides.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has shown his willingness to trust younger players in the starting XI, just ask Yan Valery or Jan Bednarek for instance, and the opportunity to work under the former Leipzig boss is an exciting one.

But would Aribo be a good signing for the Saints? Football FanCast’s writers give their verdicts on whether he would be a smart addition below…

James Bayliss

“I know very little about Joe Aribo but I saw he was linked with Arsenal and Manchester City. If he’s available on a free transfer and he’s scoring from midfield it seems to me like a no-brainer in terms of risk.”

Why should Southampton be more like Dortmund? Find out in the video below…

Harry Sherlock

“Aribo has been linked with a number of top clubs in recent weeks and while that is not necessarily an indicator of quality, it is a promising sign for Southampton fans. He has yet to make the step up to Premier League level but there is nothing wrong with securing a free transfer and crossing your fingers. Southampton would have to do just that but, if it works, they could have the next Dele Alli on their hands.”

Billy Meyers

“There’s absolutely no danger in Southampton signing Joe Aribo. The Charlton man is a young English talent who will probably be worth a fortune if he finds his feet early and puts in some good performances. If that does happen, the Saints will be glad they took the plunge on a relatively unknown quantity. This is a wholly risk-free signing, and one that could merit a huge profit in a few years time.”

Tottenham: Alderweireld would quickly go from hero to villain if he makes a move to Arsenal

Jumping ship to a rival club is a bit of a taboo in the world of football. It has happened before but it’s usually met with disgust, hatred and general lack of support for the players in question. There were some, however, who were so beloved or rather, so universally viewed as greats, that they could get away with it. Toby Alderweireld might not have reached legendary status with Tottenham Hotspur just yet but if leaving Spurs for Arsenal is truly on the cards, as the Sun is reporting, then he might be considering one of the biggest mistakes of his career.

Emotions play a huge part in modern football, whether we want to admit that or not. Sure, nowadays, it’s all about the money but romance in this beautiful game, while definitely a rarer sight, is still very much alive. It’s the reason why we won’t see Lionel Messi in a Real Madrid shirt, why Francesco Totti remained loyal to Roma until the very end or why we’ll probably never see ex-Espanyol and current Spurs coach Maurizio Pochettino at the Camp Nou.

And then we have the other side of the coin; players who don’t really care about all that “nonsense”. Your Figos and Ronaldos, Coles and Owens – you know, that lot. And even the ex-Spurs man, Sol Campbell, who did the very same thing we’re urging Toby Alderweireld not to do. Of course, Campbell went on to become one of the Invincibles at the Emirates, bathing in glory and becoming a legend of his new club. But the tables have somewhat turned now. Arsenal just suffered a disaster in the Europa League final and Tottenham are playing in the Champions League final. Quite ironic, when you think about it that way.

So looking past the emotions side of the coin, and focusing strictly on the sporting project envisioned from both of the teams, jumping the Tottenham ship to board the Arsenal one doesn’t really make much sense. Without trying to be disrespectful to the Gunners, that move would very much be viewed as a downgrade in its current state and form.

But, of course, there’s much more here at stake than simply sports, isn’t there? Having spent four excellent years in the north of London, Toby is very much becoming a big figure at the club; some would even call him a hero already. With 30 years on his back at the moment, looking for new challenges and swapping shirts with his club’s biggest rivals would be a big mistake. The fans are not really a forgiving lot and the Belgian ace should be looking at his legacy and what would become of it were he to make this unthinkable move.

Sooner rather than later, he would come to realise that empires of your own are difficult to build but rather easy to crumble. Especially, if you’re the one doing the demolishing. Just food for thought.

Spurs fans, how would you feel if Toby Alderweireld made a move to your rivals, Arsenal? Would you label him a “Judas” or a villain? Let us know in the comments below…

A moment in time: Arsenal finish above Spurs despite being seven points behind

It’s felt like forever since Arsenal last finished above Tottenham in the Premier League table.

What once used to be an annual occurrence has turned into a power struggle in north London where Arsenal have fallen ahead of Tottenham in the league as Spurs have finished above the Gunners in the table for the past two seasons and are on course to do it again for the third season in a row.

A moment in time – Arsenal catch Tottenham, 2013

It’s still mathematically possible that Arsenal can still finish above Spurs in the league, but in the mind of every Gunners fans they know it’s probably too little too late with two games of the season remaining.

But that’s not to say it won’t happen, after all, there are countless examples of Spurs slipping up from unthinkable positions and allowing Arsenal to finish above them in the league table, and none are more famous than what happened in the 2012/13 season.

Under Andre Villas-Boas, Tottenham had mounted one of their best assaults on finishing in the top-four, with Gareth Bale single handily winning games for Spurs and the other supporting characters in the squad doing enough to assist the Welshman.

Arsenal, on the other hand, had been struggling all season long in the league. The Gunners had not been in the top-four all campaign with poor results against the likes of Norwich City, Fulham and Swansea City holding Arsene Wenger’s side back from a Champions League finish heading into March.

With Tottenham hosting Arsenal on matchday 28, it was likely the winner of the latest edition of the North London Derby would go on to take the fourth and final Champions League spot in the table, and to the surprise of many, it was Spurs who took the three points in a 2-1 win.

Now seven points clear of Arsenal, it was looking like Tottenham would for the first time in the 21st century finish above the Gunners in the table, but as we all know, Tottenham Spurs’d it up.

Two defeats in their next two games saw Arsenal close the gap on their rivals to three points, and as the Gunners went on to win all but two of their final nine games of the season, draws against Everton and Wigan saw Wenger’s side leapfrog Spurs in the table as the red side of north London yet again finished above their cross-city rivals.

It is unlikely we will see a similar Tottenham slip-up this season, but we have seen in the past that they are a team who can bottle a seemingly comfortable position in the league, and Arsenal are the team who more than once reel in the awards.

Arsenal fans, can the Gunners finish above Spurs this season? Let us know!

Cannot miss out: Everton must gazump Spurs in the race for Andre Gomes

[ad_pod ]

Worryingly for Everton fans, SPORT are reporting that Tottenham have agreed personal terms with Andre Gomes and are preparing a €30m (£25.9m) offer for the midfielder, which Barcelona are said to be ready to accept when it arrives.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Portuguese international has spent the entirety of the current campaign on loan at Goodison Park with Everton, where he has become a fan favourite as a result of his classy, composed performances in the middle of the field.

The 25-year-old is a player of real pedigree, and has proven to be the perfect foil for the more combative Idrissa Gueye in Marco Silva’s midfield; however, they could be set to miss out on his signature permanently with Spurs sniffing around.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

SPORT believe that the north Londoners are waiting to officially qualify for the Champions League before making contact with Barcelona – Mauricio Pochettino’s men need just a point this weekend to do so.

Everton simply cannot miss out and must better Spurs’ offer.

Players of Gomes’ pedigree don’t come around often

Of course, for a player of his status, moving to a team who have made the final of the Champions League makes sense and would be difficult to turn down, but surely the Toffees are in the driving seat here?

The former Valencia man seems to have enjoyed his time on Merseyside, and assumingly, he wouldn’t be adverse to joining on a permanent basis as long as Marcel Brands gazumps Tottenham’s offer.

Everton have shown that they have the type of cash to compete in the market. £35m on Richarlison. £45m on Gylfi Sigurdsson. And so on.

The amount of dross that they have signed in the past for huge fees, such as Morgan Schneiderlin, Yannick Bolasie and Theo Walcott, should make their desire to land a truly quality midfielder even greater.

Who knows how long it could be before a player of a similar ilk becomes available for a similar price range of between £30m and £40m?

Absolute disgrace: West Brom fans react angrily to latest managerial update

[ad_pod ]

After James Shan had won his opening three games in temporary charge of West Brom, the Hawthorns seemed a more positive place compared to when they sacked Darren Moore.

However, all it has taken for negativity to seep back in was one defeat.

The Baggies suffered a big setback against Millwall last weekend but despite the loss, Shan will remain in charge for West Brom’s match with Bristol City on Tuesday.

Reacting on Twitter, the fans aren’t too pleased with the decision as it was also revealed the appointment of a new interim boss would not be ruled out.

Supports launched a scathing attack on their own club, with one fan labelling them a joke and another calling West Brom an utter shambles.

Other reaction included someone calling the club a laughing stock whilst one also branded the situation as tinpot management.

Affairs at the club have become somewhat of a circus in recent weeks with the Albion board clearly unsure of what action to take after sacking Moore.

With the team’s promotion on the line and no plan of action, the decision becomes more bizarre as the weeks go by.
