Brighton set to pip Celtic to Kaoru Mitoma

Brighton look set to pip Celtic to the signing of Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma, according to Tokyo Sports, as cited by Sport Witness.

The Lowdown: Mitoma profiled

Mitoma, who has represented Japan at Under-23 level, currently plays for J1 League side Kawasaki Frontale.

The 24-year-old, primarily a left winger, has just 12 months left on his contract. He has scored 12 goals and registered five assists in all competitions this year.

Mitoma handed in a transfer request a day after Ange Postecoglou was announced as Celtic boss, with speculation mounting over a potential Parkhead move. However, it doesn’t look like he will be moving to Scotland.

The Latest: Source shares update

According to Tokyo Sports, as cited by Sport Witness, Brighton are set to secure Mitoma’s services. The Seagulls have reached a ‘general agreement’, with a deal set to go through following the Olympic Games in his homeland.

Mitoma is unlikely to be granted a work permit in England so could end up moving on loan to Belgian side Royal Union Saint-Gilloise, who have close connections with Brighton.

A source close to the player told Tokyo Sports regarding his next destination: “I heard that it was decided to go to the Premier League.”

The Verdict: Edwards as an alternative?

It remains to be seen just how strong Celtic’s interest in Mitoma had been, although another winger who has been linked with a move to Parkhead is Kyle Edwards.

The former West Brom man is now a free agent and the Hoops are thought to be negotiating personal terms with the 23-year-old. A move would cost Celtic £300,000 in compensation and Edwards and Mitoma can both play on either flank.

Postecoglou wants a new winger through the door before his first competitive game in charge on July 20, so perhaps Edwards will be Celtic’s man over Mitoma, who now looks unattainable.

Vaughan bemoans missing a double century again

It is not often that a man who has scored 195 in a Test match complains that he has got out, but Michael Vaughan was annoyed with himself after doing just that. He was 182 not out overnight, but added only 13 runs to that score on the second day before being caught behind off Zaheer Khan.Vaughan said: “I was disappointed to get out today because I was looking to go beyond 200. But it was decent ball. At least I didn’t get it when I was on nought.”Vaughan has enjoyed a very successful summer, joining an elite band of England players who have recorded four Test centuries in one season. He also just missed out on a double century at trent Bridge. He puts the success down to a change in attitude. “I am looking to be a lot more positive and Duncan Fletcher has been very helpful and taught me a few new tricks. I felt I could hit the ball all round the park yesterday.”Dominic Cork made a successful return to the Test side with the bat and now needs to contribute with the ball. “We have to stay consistent, get the ball in the right areas and try and take the edge," he said.Getting the ball in right areas consistently was what Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh did to become, amazingly, the first bowler in the series to take five wickets in anInnings. He believes there is still time for India to win this match, despite the England first innings total of 515.”We are pretty much back in the match, we just need to bat well tomorrow. It is now quite open, it’s only the second day and there is a lot of time left. We have batsmen in form and ideally I won’t have to bat. We have two spinners and the ball will turn more as time goes on.”

Ronchi pips rivals to prestigious run-scorer prize

Luke Ronchi has won the prestigious ECB Southern Electric Premier League batting award after hitting a half-century in Bashley-Rydal’s comfortable six-wicket win at Andover. His 53 ensured he finished the leading run scorer in Premier Division 1 – 28 ahead of Liphook’s South African all-rounder Alistair Gray and in front of Damian Shirazi, who finished with a league runners-up medal after BAT surrendered the championship to Havant. To cap a double celebration for Bashley, Kevin Nash grabbed three Andover wickets to win the August Southern Electric Cricketer of the Month prize.Nash took 3-33 to take his August wicket tally to 16 and his season’s haul to 36 – one more victim than team-mate Matt King achieved last year.Toby Radford, the former Sussex and Middlesex opener, fought a lone battle for Andover, who dipped from a promising 80-1 to 150-9.Radford hit a painstaking but nonetheless invaluable 64 – out of 134-7 before he was dismissed – and was the only Andover batsman to master a mean Bashley attack.Ronchi, on his farewell appearance, took 1-11 off ten overs, while Chris Sketchley (2-23) and Neil Taylor (2-27) dictated terms with the ball as Andover struggled on the low-bounce London Road surface.Bashley-Rydal lost promoted opener John Whiting and Andy Sexton, but bright and breezy half-centuries by Ronchi (53) and Neil Thurgood (55) swept them to the brink of a six-wicket win.Thurgood took a distinct liking to Andover spin pair Martin Docis and Gareth Tate, who were hit for a combined total of 74 off 5.3 overs.Dale Middleton’s 22 not out eased Bashley home with 22 overs to spare.Burridge bade their Premiership farewells, losing by four wickets to South Wilts at Lower Bemerton.Ironically, former Burridge all-rounder Tom Caines played a major role in their demise, taking 3-34 before hitting a key 60 in the South Wilts run chase.Only Jo Dixon (25), Paul Hawkins (20) and Paul Ancell (19) made any real impact as Burridge tumbled to 133 all out, Paul Draper (3-21) and Caines sharing six of the wickets.South Wilts promptly lost two wickets for one run, but Caines (60) steadied the slide and, with help from Colin Moody (22) and Tim Lamb (23), eased the Salisbury club to 134-6.Portsmouth fielded only three first team regulars as they too dipped to 133 all out (Dean Oliffe 57) at Liphook & Ripsley.Neil Randall (57) hit his first half-century of the season as Liphook cruised home, with Ali Gray making 43 not out.

Pundit makes prediction over Leeds signings

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny believes the Whites’ future transfer business will be boosted by the expansion of Elland Road.

The Lowdown: Elland Road expansion plans

Leeds enjoyed a superb return to the Premier League last season, finishing ninth and playing some of the most eye-catching football in the division.

It isn’t only on the pitch where the Whites are thriving, however, with plans in place to increase Elland Road’s capacity by 16,000, taking it to 55,000.

It is an exciting update that will make the famous Elland Road atmosphere even greater, but more importantly, it will generate more revenue.

The Latest: Kenny excited about the future

Speaking to Football Insider, 43 year-old Kenny was hugely excited about what the future has to offer, suggesting more money will now be available to buy new players:

“They are trying to build on what they’ve done over the past few years. In getting promoted and then finishing in the top half of the table, that was an amazing achievement.

“This [stadium expansion] brings more revenue and brings massively more finances and might give them more money to spend in the transfer market.

“It’s unbelievable the atmosphere as it is already. When I played there, the club wasn’t in as good a position as it is now. But even when there was only 25,000 there it was still unbelievable.

“So I can see plenty of positives. I’m sure there are lots of Leeds fans who haven’t got the chance to go and watch them who might do now.”

The Verdict: Moving in the right direction

This is such an exciting time to be a Leeds supporter, with the club excelling in so many areas on both sides of those white lines, as they look to slowly return to the top of English football.

Money is ultimately the key in the modern game, and if Bielsa is afforded more funds for transfers, it will play a major role in the Whites pushing towards the European places.

European football can then bring in even more revenue and so on and so forth.

The aim for now however is of course just to keep heading in the right direction, which Andrea Radrizzani and co certainly seem to be doing.

New Zealand will face a more disciplined West Indies team – Wright

New Zealand can expect to meet a much more disciplined West Indies team, on their tour starting next week, than the side which toured here in 1999/00.That team lost both Tests and suffered a clean sweep of defeats in the five One-Day Internationals. That’s the view of former New Zealand captain John Wright, who has been coaching the Indian team during their tour which has seen the West Indies take the Test series 2-1. A five-match one-day series is just about to start.”They looked a pretty good unit,” he told CricInfo today.”We’re disappointed, we should have played a lot better in the last Test.”They batted very well, and batted in depth. We had eight hundreds scored against us.”They are a lot tougher now. They are like us, they find it hard to win away from home but only South Africa and Australia have beaten them at home amongst all countries for the last 10 years,” he said.Wright said the opening combination of Wavell Hinds and Chris Gayle was a good one while Ramnaresh Sarwan was a very solid batsman. Brian Lara had been a little out of touch while the tail-enders didn’t offer too much trouble with the bat.”They have four quicks again and they have been bowling good patterns.”Mervyn Dillon and Cameron Cuffy have been very disciplined and both bowled well against us,” he said. They were not fast bowlers in the most recent West Indies mould.”Adam Sanford gets it through but Dillon and Cuffy are not out-and-out quick bowlers, they are not by any means express,” he said.New Zealand leave for their tour on Tuesday. They play five One-Day Internationals and two Test matches in Barbados and Grenada.

Windass could trade Sheff Wed for Millwall

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Josh Windass could exit the club and join Millwall this summer, according to a fresh report which emerged on Friday.

The Lowdown: Windass shines for Owls

Though unable to keep the Owls in the Championship last season, the 27 year-old proved to be an impressive figure for Darren Moore’s side and was hailed as a ‘constant threat’ by pundit Sue Smith.

Windass chipped in with nine goals and five assists in 41 league games in 2020/21, outscoring the rest of his Wednesday teammates.

With Moore’s team now in League One, however, he could look for a way out this summer, eyeing up a return to the second tier of English football.

The Latest: Midfielder could join Millwall

According to Sky Sports [10:02am, Friday 18th June], Millwall are keen on signing Windass this summer and are ‘preparing to make a bid’ for him.

Preston North End and Birmingham City are both believed to be interested, too, as the battle to acquire his signature hots up.

The Verdict: Blow for Wednesday

In an ideal world, Windass would stay put with the Owls, helping them push for promotion back into the Championship under Moore.

Given his production last term, one would have to assume he would be a constant threat for defences in the third tier.

The harsh reality is that he will believe he belongs in the Championship, though, making it likely that he will return there in the near future.

Windass’ contract expires next summer, so Wednesday are in a tricky spot if they try keep hold of him, risking losing the former Rangers youngster on a free transfer next year.

In other news, Sheff Wed have suffered a blow in their quest to sign one player this summer. Find out who it is here.

Leicester close to signing Ryan Bertrand

Leicester City are close to completing the signing of Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand on a free transfer.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, the Foxes have agreed a deal with the 31-year-old, who will join up with Brendan Rodgers’ side when his contract expires on the south coast.

Leicester have reportedly seen off competition from fellow Premier League side Arsenal for Bertrand’s signature, and he’s set to become the first summer signing for the Midlands outfit.

Fans will be buzzing

The 2020/21 campaign was a mixed bag for Leicester. A maiden FA Cup victory marked another incredible footnote in the club’s recent history, but a final day defeat to Tottenham Hotspur saw them narrowly miss out on a Champions League qualification spot once again.

Rodgers has already started the rebuilding process, though, and the imminent arrival of Bertrand will surely have the club’s supporters buzzing.

Although the £70,000-per-week dynamo may not be the most glamorous name, acquiring his signature is just the latest astute move in the transfer market from the 2016 Premier League champions.

Several star names such as Boubakary Soumare and Odsonne Edouard have been linked with big-money moves to the King Power Stadium in recent weeks, and the purchase of a vastly experienced full-back like Bertrand on a free transfer will allow Rodgers to complete the more expensive deals in key areas of the pitch.

With more than 250 top-flight appearances to his name, the former Chelsea man should be a valuable addition to Leicester’s squad and solve their temporary left-back problem.

The highly-rated James Justin is set to be sidelined for some time yet after picking up a serious knee injury, and the departure of Christian Fuchs has left Rodgers needing competition and cover for 19-year-old Luke Thomas.

Therefore, Bertrand is a logical solution, and it’s clear that he’s still capable of producing top-class performances at the highest level after The Athletic’s Southampton reporter Dan Sheldon lauded his display against Manchester United back in July 2020.

“I thought Ryan Bertrand was absolutely superb. Everyone knows he’s a good player, but he almost goes unnoticed at times. I think that block he put in towards the end, that just epitomised the whole performance from a Saints perspective anyway, but I didn’t even notice Mason Greenwood,” said Sheldon.

Bertrand’s impending signing may not make huge headlines this summer, but it’s another piece of clever business from Leicester, and Foxes fans will surely be delighted with his arrival.
