Henrique Araujo: Liverpool’s next Jota?

Liverpool must seal a move for Benfica striker Henrique Araújo this summer, as he could be manager Jurgen Klopp’s next Diogo Jota.

According to a recent report from Mexican outlet Mundo Deportivo, the Reds are interested in signing the player but face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City and Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

The 20-year old has produced some impressive performances in Benfica’s youth set-up this season and as a result, has admirers across Europe. He has appeared 34 times this season scoring 17 goals including one for the senior team.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

It includes an impressive hat-trick in Benfica’s victory over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Youth League final, which were his first goals in the competition. With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise that he’s been described as a “poacher” by scout Jacek Kulig, who also hailed his finishing, instinct and movement.

Despite the interest he has received from abroad, Benfica are reluctant to let him go. At such a young age he could have more of an impact on the team and eventually fetch a higher fee if he stays longer. He’s contracted until 2024 so it would take a big offer to get hold of him now.

He is represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes which may be one of the reasons he has been linked to some of Europe’s biggest sides. Liverpool are no stranger to dealing with Mendes, having negotiated a £41m move for Diogo Jota, who is also represented by him, back in 2020.

They could repeat this move by signing Araújo who could learn from his compatriot and work with one of the best managers in the world in Klopp who could transform him into a world star.

Liverpool also require a replacement for Divock Origi who is likely to leave when his contract expires in the summer.

The Reds seem to have an advantage over their rivals when it comes to signing him, Barcelona are ‘not in the mood’ to make a big investment, and it’s likely any move for the Portuguese U21 international would require that.

Man City also have their sights set elsewhere after they have reportedly agreed terms with Erling Haaland. With others distracted it may be the perfect opportunity for Liverpool to swoop in and secure the deal. Whilst they might have to pay more, they will face stronger competition in the future.

Manchester United eyeing Goncalo Inacio

Manchester United are eyeing up a summer move for Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio.

The Lowdown: Inacio profiled

The 20-year-old Portuguese starlet is primarily a centre-back but can also line out at left-back when required.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Under contract until 2026, Inacio has been hailed as ‘underrated’ by journalist Zach Lowy and has made 69 senior appearances for Sporting Lisbon.

The Portugal under-21 international has been a regular for his club during the current campaign and has even weighed in with five goals in all competitions.

The Latest: Man United interest in Inacio

Sport Witness relayed a transfer update from Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha regarding Inacio and Manchester United.

They claimed that the Red Devils have tracked the defender for ‘some time’ and that their interest is now ‘real’ ahead of the summer transfer window.

Inacio’s price tag is ‘simple’ – a €45m (£38m) release clause, with Newcastle United also name-checked in the report in a potential two-way battle.

The Verdict: United need him

A major shake-up is needed under Erik ten Hag this summer, and following United’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday evening, defensive reinforcements certainly seem to be required.

Inacio could be a shrewd prospective addition in both the short and long-term due to his versatility, age and impressive displays this season.

The centre-back is clearly comfortable on the ball, with a passing completion rate of 91.1% in the current Portuguese top-flight campaign, while he also tops Sporting’s ranks when it comes to clearances made per 90. [WhoScored]

A £38m swoop would also be in United’s price range, and you’d like to think the club could fund a deal for Inacio by offloading a few players this summer.

Townsend must start for Everton vs Spurs

Everton are leaving themselves with no room for error in the remaining months of the Premier League campaign, and are in desperate need of points in the league to climb the table into safety away from the relegation zone.

However, they face a tricky test on Monday, travelling to London to take on Antonio Conte’s Spurs side.

Frank Lampard will be hoping that he can capitalise on Tottenham’s inconsistency, with the team losing three of their last five games, and one of those fixtures was lost to relegation contender Burnley, so the Toffees boss could easily identify the weaknesses Spurs have shown in their defeats and exploit them himself tomorrow night.

One player who should make an appearance in the starting line-up on Monday evening is Andros Townsend, who hasn’t been getting the credit he deserves this season when you look at the positive impact he has made since arriving on a free transfer last summer.

Townsend is currently Everton’s top goalscorer this season on seven goals, and has four assists which is the most in the team, tied with Abdoulaye Doucoure, offering an unrivalled attacking output in the team that shouldn’t be overlooked by Lampard when he selects his team.

The 30-year-old who was dubbed “underrated” by his pundit Carlton Palton, offers versatility to play across the forward line and attacking midfield positions, as well as buckets of Premier League experience that gives him an edge over his younger competitors for his position in the team.

The £6.3m-rated forward showed his capabilities in his most recent opportunity to start in the side against Boreham Wood in the FA Cup clash midweek, bagging an assist, proving successful in 100% of his dribbles, winning the majority of his duels (70%) and made his presence known all over the pitch with 83 touches of the ball during the victory according to SofaScore.

With that being said, not only has Townsend earned his place to start in the side against Tottenham Hotspur, he offers reliability that Lampard can’t ignore when it comes to the difficult challenge of taking all three points from a top-four competing side away from home.

By unleashing him, the Everton manager could potentially haunt Spurs courtesy of their former player, while unlocking an unexpected victory that could ultimately save the Toffees season, as every point matters now for the club.

A característica é diferente.

– A expulsão muda o jogo.

Dominant England look to extend run

Cricinfo previews the second one-day International between England and Pakistan at Headingley

The Preview by Sahil Dutta and Liam Brickhill11-Sep-2010Match factsSeptember 12, 2010, Headingley
Start time 10.15am (9.15am GMT)Despite a disappointing summer with the bat, Umar Akmal has the ability to inject life into the one-day series•Getty ImagesBig pictureWhile it seems that nothing could rid the backdrop of spot-fixing allegations from this series, the lingering hope is that a keen contest between these two sides might at least provide a moment of relief. The abject nature of Pakistan’s pair of defeats in the Twenty20 series, played in front of half-empty stands at Cardiff, left a fear that the one-day series could descend into a more unappetising farce than even the seven-match trudge against Australia at the end of last summer. Thankfully, without really threatening England, Pakistan still demonstrated enough spirit and backbone in the first game to keep their fans hoping. The much-hyped introduction of enormous paceman Mohammad Irfan may have failed to match the billing but the veteran Shoaib Akthar sweated through an impressive opening spell and provided enough of a test to keep England’s batsmen hopping. Saeed Ajmal continued to weave the confusion that has hounded England all summer and most significantly, Pakistan’s fielding was smart and at times – such as Umar Akmal’s direct-hit from the outfield to dismiss Tim Bresnan – positively sharp. The batting too was much improved. Kamran Akmal managed his first decent performance of a chastening summer, while his brother Umar flickered with his abundant talent once again and there were spirited contributions throughout the order. It was enough for Andrew Strauss to unleash that most trite of clichés by declaring after the match that “cricket was the winner”. Though It speaks volumes for how low Pakistan had sunk that a comfortable England win was seen as progress, another improvement at Edgbaston could put the teams on more equal footing.England, for their part, are quietly piecing together a team to challenge for the World Cup in February. Their limited-overs cricket has improved beyond recognition since the 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Australia last summer, and the World Twenty20 champions have now won four ODI series in a row and show no signs of stopping. The demand for continual improvement saw Craig Kieswetter dumped out of the team for Steve Davies as the England management set a clear challenge – perform now and book your place for the World Cup. Davies’ response was perfect, striking the ball sweetly to race to 87 from 67 deliveries and both earn the Man-of-the-Match award and high praise from his captain. Alongside him Ravi Bopara’s international rehabilitation continued with a breezy unbeaten 37 to finish the innings. Both still have plenty to prove and that context alone gives England supporters something to follow.Form guide (last five completed matches)England WWLWL
Pakistan LWLLLLWatch out for…Such is his style, Paul Collingwood’s contributions in England’s middle-order can often be overshadowed by his more flamboyant team-mates. But since England’s triumph against Australia earlier this summer, his returns have dipped noticeably and he is due a score in one-day cricket. Positive starts in the second Twenty20 and first ODI against Pakistan – including a dismissive flick over the square leg boundary after charging Shoaib Akhtar in Cardiff – gave a hint of his enduring ability in limited-overs cricket. Before his inexplicable brainwrong at Chester-le-Street, Umar Akmal had threatened to take the game away from England singlehandedly with an array of attacking cricket shots. There is no doubt that the younger Akmal oozes talent, but if Pakistan are to reverse their slide this summer they will need more than attractive cameos from him. Though he is only 20 years old, the sooner Akmal finds the level-head to take responsibility for the middle order, the better.Team newsEngland rung the changes for this series and after starting on a winning note they are likely to stick with the chosen XI to deliver the goods again.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Steve Davies (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Michael Yardy, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonPakistan’s improvement was palpable but Umar Gul’s below-par showing at Chester-le-Street could tempt them to recall Abdul Razzaq to bolster the batting as well.Pakistan (possible) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Mohammad Yousuf, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shahid Afridi (capt), 6 Fawad Alam, 7 Asad Shafiq, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Mohammad Irfan, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Shoaib Akhtar.Pitch and conditionsThe Headingley wicket is variable, and – particularly when there is cloud cover – aids seam bowling. Recent matches at the ground have shown that there are runs to be had when the sun shines, however, and Alastair Cook cracked an aggressive unbeaten hundred in a seven-wicket win over Yorkshire in the CB 40 last weekend. With a reasonably sunny day expected tomorrow, this could be a game for the batsmen.Stats and TriviaShahid Afridi hasn’t looked in particularly good nick since returning to Pakistan’s squad for the limited-overs leg of their tour, which may be an indication of how much of an effect outside events have had on team morale. Afridi has scratched together just 37 runs in three international innings since his return without clearing the ropes once, but he’s still international cricket’s leading six-hitter in ODIs this year, and also still tops the lists for highest strike-rate in an innings. After his hundreds against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Dambulla just over two months ago, much more is expected of Pakistan’s captain.
Jonathan Trott’s fantastic run of form this summer has brought him 942 runs in home internationals in 2010 at the inflated average of 85.63. He has registered two Test hundreds, one in ODIs, and in matches in which England have won he averages a round 100.
QuotesThe two games I played previously, one was when Matty [Prior] was out and the other was just a one-off Twenty20. But I feel this is now my time. It’s a great chance for me.”

“We all want to go home with respect. We are good cricketers and want to maintain our respect and that is gained by playing good cricket. After a victory the respect will come again.”

Hendrick set for summer exit from Newcastle

Newcastle United’s new owners showed during the January transfer window how keen they are on revitalising the squad at St James’ Park and strengthening where needed.

Looking ahead to the upcoming summer transfer window, it seems as though the Tyneside club could be set to say goodbye to at least one figure who was brought in during Mike Ashley’s tenure.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to Football FanCast, transfer insider Pete O’Rourke was discussing the future of Jeff Hendrick at Newcastle and what the upcoming summer transfer window could hold for him.

The journalist said: “Obviously, we saw Jeff Hendrick go out on loan in January, I’d expect him to leave on a permanent in the summer.”

Newcastle signed the midfielder in 2020 on a free transfer from fellow Premier League side Burnley. Since then, the 30-year-old made just 27 appearances for the Toon across all competitions before being loaned out to Championship side Queens Park Rangers in January, as O’Rourke mentioned.

Having made 22 appearances for Newcastle during the previous Premier League campaign, the Irishman earned a rather disappointing overall performance rating of 6.33/10 from WhoScored, making him the lowest-rated player to start more than four league games for the Magpies.

Also, having only made 18 combined tackles and interceptions, fewer than the majority of players in Newcastle’s squad at the time, it’s safe to say that the Irish midfielder didn’t offer much in terms of breaking up opposition attacks.

Taking this into account, it would be safe to assume that many supporters at St James’ Park would be happy to see the back of Hendrick if he were to leave for good this summer.

However, having only earned an uninspiring overall performance rating of 6.42/10 from nine Championship appearances with QPR since his arrival in west London, Newcastle may have a challenge on their hands finding a club to take him.

Either way, as long as the midfielder isn’t on the books at St James’ Park heading into next season, it’s hard to see too many Magpies supporters being bothered about where he ends up.

MS Gill criticises IPL for bending rules

The sports minister of India, M S Gill has come down strongly on the IPL for commercializing cricket at the cost of its spirit and rules of the game

Cricinfo staff29-Mar-2010

MS Gill: “The whole thing is to entertain the masses. The bowler is just an instrument for this promotion”•Indian Premier League

The sports minister of India, MS Gill has come down strongly on the IPL for commercialising cricket at the cost of its spirit and rules of the game. In an interview with , Gill also questioned the conflict of interest arising out of the involvement of BCCI functionaries, with the IPL franchises.”… the BCCI, they have a direct interest as owners of teams, as people who have a direct benefit from it [IPL] and this is something very dangerous,” Gill said. “They have also used the rules against another rival league [ICL]. But the controlling body has to be for India, for cricket for the long term. It has to be totally uninvolved.”Lalit Modi, the chairman and commissioner of the IPL is the vice-president of the BCCI. N. Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary is a top functionary of India Cements, the company that owns the Chennai Super Kings franchise, while Kris Srikkant, the chief national selector is an ambassador for the Chennai side.”Those who are to make rules for everyone, for all aspects of the game and keeping in view the interest of the game and the country and the long term, have to be totally apart from being involved in IPL in any way,” Gill said.Gill accused the IPL of changing the rules and conditions to favour batsmen in the name of entertainment, thereby severely diminishing the bowlers’ role in the game. “The bowler is only the victim and the bat.. now you have mongoose bat. I look forward to a cobra bat. The boundaries have been shortened I think, as I hear. The whole thing is to entertain the masses. The bowler is just an instrument for this promotion,” Gill said.Gill cautioned that Twenty20 cricket posed a serious threat to the longer formats of the game. “The five-day Test is under challenge and you see nobody turns up for it, crowds have already been moved away. Even the 50-over game is reduced to Twent20. I sometimes say jokingly that we’ll go to T5 and then T1 and then half an over,” Gill said.
