Perth Scorchers penalised for using central replacement player Brayden Stepien incorrectly

Perth Scorchers have been found guilty of breaching BBL contracting rules after using a central replacement player incorrectly during their loss to Adelaide Strikers on January 14, but will still finish top of the ladder as the BBL lock away their finals venues.Scorchers called in a replacement player Brayden Stepien from the newly-created central pool to keep wicket for 14 overs during the Strikers match after Laurie Evans, who was initially picked to keep wicket, had suffered an injury. Scorchers were already missing Josh Inglis, who was with Australia’s Test squad, while Cameron Bancroft was missing due to Covid. At a CA Code of Conduct Commission hearing on Tuesday, Commissioner Alan Sullivan QC determined that Stepien was an ineligible player for the match, and that the decision to field Stepien was a breach of the rules.Sullivan determined the penalty for Scorchers would be the deduction of their Bash Boost point earned on the day, but noted the unique and challenging circumstances of the current BBL season and the low impact of this breach. But Strikers were not awarded the Boost point.Stepien was on standby for the game as a replacement player, but clubs need to officially add the replacement player to their squad list prior to the game to allow him to play. But Stepien was called upon to field despite not being added to Scorchers list.Meanwhile, Scorchers have requested to host their finals at the Marvel Stadium in Docklands, as the BBL confirmed the first three finals will be held in Melbourne to minimise the impact of Covid-19. The Eliminator and Knockout will be both be held at the MCG on January 21 and 23 respectively, while the Qualifier will be held at the Marvel Stadium on January 22.”The League’s firm belief is that we must work together with our clubs to do all we can to protect the finals series using the lessons from the season so far,” BBL General Manager Alistair Dobson said.”As such, we have made the difficult decision to stage the first week of the finals series in Melbourne. This decision provides all participating clubs the best possible chance of participating in a finals match with the strongest squad available.”Should Scorchers win the Qualifier, they will also host the final at the Marvel Stadium. The Challenger and the Final will be held at the preferred home ground of the team that earns the right to host, but Scorchers are unable to play in Perth due Western Australia’s border being closed.

Jô recebeu nova chance, contudo, deixou a desejar.

The former Aston Villa and Rangers manager could end up taking on a different job in Saudi Arabia as he is reportedly open to a role in football development in the country.

Diogo Jota confirmed out of Arsenal v Liverpool, two others are late doubts

As Liverpool look to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League, they’ll have to do so without one of Arne Slot’s key men against title rivals Arsenal at The Emirates, with two more Reds now late doubts as well.

Liverpool injury news

The Reds’ injury list is slowly beginning to increase in what is a worrying sign for Slot. Already, Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott find themselves sidelined long-term to particularly open the door for Caoimhin Kelleher to take his opportunity. The Irishman has so far grasped hold of his chance once again and will start against Arsenal hoping to secure Liverpool’s biggest result of the campaign so far.

The injury to Elliott is slightly more frustrating, meanwhile, given how the youngster was yet to really make his mark under Slot before being ruled out. Up against Arsenal though, the Reds will be feeling the full impact of at least one other absentee.

According to Slot, confirmed during his press conference, Diogo Jota will miss the Arsenal game after failing to travel to face RB Leipzig and coming off injured against Chelsea with a rib injury last weekend. There are also question marks over Federico Chiesa and Conor Bradley, who could return to training on Saturday but are unlikely to be fit enough to take full part.

"Cheeky" £24,000-p/w star favours Liverpool move after contract talks stall

He could replace Mohamed Salah…

1 ByTom Cunningham Oct 25, 2024

The Portugal international isn’t exactly unfamiliar with spells on the sidelines, with his struggle for full fitness often leaving fans to wonder what might have been if he could stay fit for the entirety of a campaign. Nonetheless, faced with another injury, Jota will have no choice but to sit out and hand the responsibility to Darwin Nunez in the biggest game of Slot’s tenure so far.

In a game that could reveal whether Liverpool are title pretenders or, indeed, contenders, Nunez must step up in place of his £140,000-a-week teammate.

Jota's incredible record vs Arsenal

When assessing those who can lead the Liverpool line, it is Jota who stands above the rest for his all-round quality. Where Nunez is erratic, Jota is clinical. Where Gakpo is subdued in that particular role, Jota is energised and at the centre of everything good that this Liverpool side does. So without him against Arsenal of all sides, the Reds are likely to suffer a big miss.

What’s more, given that Jota has scored eight goals and assisted another two in 15 games against Arsenal – his best record against a Premier League side – the Gunners will undoubtedly be pleased to see the forward taking his place in the stands rather than within Slot’s frontline.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Jota during his legendary tenure, saying via TNT Sports: “He has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs. He has the technical skills, he has the physical skills and he is very smart and can learn all the tactical stuff pretty quick.”

The torch, however, now likely falls the way of Nunez to prove himself once and for all under Slot against Arsenal.

Luke Hollman ten-for sees Middlesex wrap up crushing win over Sussex

Tom Haines became the first batsmen to score 1000 LV= Insurance County Championship runs this season but the Sussex captain could not prevent his side from suffering an innings defeat to Middlesex at Hove. The 22-year-old opener reached the milestone on 57 and he went on to make 87 to add to his career-best 156 in the first innings. Fynn Hudson-Prentice helped Haines add 81 for the sixth wicket and scored a half-century, but legspinner Luke Hollman followed his five wickets in the first innings by taking 5 for 90 to finish with career-best match figures of 10 for 155.Sussex were eventually bowled out for 303, as Middlesex won by an innings and 54 runs to make it two wins out of two in Division Three. The hosts were still 269 runs in arrears at the start and they lost George Garton in the fifth over of the day, when he got a thin edge to wicketkeeper John Simpson pushing forward to Hollman for 17.Dan Ibrahim looked solid enough until he chipped a tame catch to mid-on to give Hollman another wicket but Haines and Hudson-Prentice, who returned to Sussex from Derbyshire for a second spell last month, added 81 in 24 overs either side of lunch with few alarms.Hudson-Prentice played some eye-catching drives off both Hollman and the Middlesex seamers and for a while Sussex entertained thoughts of saving the game. But Haines, who had been on the field for all but 34 balls of the match, not surprisingly tired and on 87 tried to drive Hollman down the ground and Thilan Walallawita made ground to take the catch at long off. Haines had faced 170 balls and hit eight fours, taking his aggregate for the season to 1030 runs at an average of 51.96.Hudson-Prentice had played very fluently until slow left-armer Walallawita found some extra bounce out of the footholes and he gloved the ball to Simpson for 67, made from 104 deliveries with nine fours.Oli Carter and Delray Rawlins added 33 before Middlesex captain Tim Murtagh struck as soon as he took the new ball, tempting Rawlins with a short ball which he obligingly pulled into the hands of Hollman at deep midwicket. Jack Carson lost his off stump to Murtagh’s nip-backer and Martin Andersson picked up the final wicket when he pinned Henry Crocombe for 5, leaving Carter unbeaten on 31.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guardiola is said to be working overtime to try to resurrect City’s form and had revealed earlier in the month that the nosedive has seen him adopt an unhealthy lifestyle. The former Barcelona man spoke to the media after City’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday – their third straight loss – and revealed that he is baffled by the alarming downturn.

  • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

The Catalan tactician said: “Always when we win a lot of games and titles I say we are going to lose games. When we won 13 or 14 games or 10 games and we lose one or draw one and it is, ‘what happened? Why you draw or lose a game?’ So it is football.

“We won a lot, it was exceptional, and now we are living the parallel. We didn’t expect [it], I didn’t personally and I don’t know what will be the outcome after that, so life gives you that. We have to deal with it.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN CITY?

Guardiola’s side now have two games that can be considered somewhat easier as they will take on Everton on Boxing Day before travelling to King Power Stadium to face off against Leicester City on December 29. City fans will be hopeful their side can utilise the two clashes to turn around their form as the year comes to a close.

Concrete option: Crystal Palace working on deal to help replace Olise

Crystal Palace have made three signings so far this summer, splashing the cash to acquire Ismaila Sarr from Marseille, Chadi Riad from Real Betis, and Daichi Kamada (who joined on a free) from Lazio.

However, the biggest story at Palace this summer, has, of course, been the loss of Michael Olise, who left to join German giants, Bayern Munich, for a fee of around £50m.

Olise made 19 appearances for Palace in the Premier League last season, scoring ten goals, providing six assists, and totalling 1,278 minutes played, with the race still on to help find ways to suitably replace him at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to reports from Florian Plettenberg, Crystal Palace are "exploring a deal" to sign Union Berlin left wingback, Robin Gosens. PSV Eindhoven were also interested. However, their interest has cooled, and Palace is the most "concrete option" at this stage.

Union Berlin still sees Gosens as one of their "key players", and will only negotiate for a suitable offer, of at least €10m (£8.5m).

Gosens made 37 appearances for Union Berlin in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, providing four assists, and contributing to six clean sheets in 2,748 minutes played.

Gosens vs Olise comparison

One of the main parts of replacing Olise at Palace, is finding a way to replace his goals and assists. Gosens, despite playing as a wingback/fullback more often in recent years, still provides a great level of creativity and output.

Described as "outstanding" by Statman Dave, Gosens has a tendency to arrive in the box, create chances, and find himself in dangerous areas to affect the game, no matter where he is playing on the pitch.

The reason for including Tyrick Mitchell in the comparison table is to show the attacking output a signing such as Gosens could add as the left-wing back in Oliver Glasner's system, as opposed to Mitchell, helping to add those creative numbers back into the side to replace Olise.

Despite playing at wing-back, Gosens produces 3.73 progressive passes per 90 (1.09 more than Mitchell), 1.12 key passes per 90 (0.45 more than Mitchell), and takes 1.25 shots per 90 (0.89 more than Mitchell).

These metrics show the extra attacking qualities Gosens could bring to the team, getting himself into dangerous positions higher up the pitch than Mitchell, shown by his 2.28 penalty area touches per 90, compared to Mitchell's 1.52.

Tyrick Mitchell

The versatility of Gosens is another important factor, as he can play deeper as a left wingback option, as well as higher up as a left-winger if needed, offering tactical versatility for Glasner. If he decided he needed extra defensive cover, he could start both Mitchell and Gosens in the same team.

But you also wouldn't be losing out on defensive qualities when Gosens is playing instead of Mitchell, as the 30-year-old actually averages more blocks and interceptions than Mitchell, with 1.88 blocks per 90, and 1.28 interceptions per 90.

Whilst Gosens doesn't completely replace Olise's creative and attacking metrics, adding him to the squad, alongside other forward signings such as Sarr and Kamada, could equate to replacing those numbers, just through a variety of players, rather than a direct replacement.

Delayed elections – USA Cricket board members file lawsuit against other members, chief executive

Allege numerous improper procedures, five fellow board members and CEO Iain Higgins sued

Peter Della Penna20-Mar-2021Two USA Cricket board members have filed a lawsuit against other board members as well as the chief executive of the organisation, alleging numerous improper procedures tied to the latest cycle of delayed elections. ESPNcricinfo has obtained a copy of the lawsuit, filed on March 8, in which Venu Pisike and Srini Salver filed the claim, and also listed USA Cricket as a co-plaintiff, but in which they have sued five fellow board members along with CEO Iain Higgins.USA Cricket issued a statement late on Friday evening, calling aspects of the suit “meritless” and arguing that fighting the suit could affect plans for the year: “If… it is required to further divert some of those limited resources into defending the organization from meritless legal claims and protecting the rights of its new membership, the Board will have no choice but to consider cutting some of its planned cricketing activities and developmental activities for 2021 and is scheduled to meet early next week to consider which activities must be scaled back.”Related

NFL executive Paraag Marathe named USA Cricket's chairman

The dispute, a throwback to the days of the expelled USA Cricket Association (USACA), stems from a series of administrative decisions from November 2020 in which the five board members are alleged to have voted in favour of approving a membership referendum to change voting procedures for the next election. The referendum called for an exception to be made in this election to allow new members to register to vote and grant immediate voting rights rather than allowing voting rights to be given after a 12-month membership, as required in the constitution. The plaintiffs allege that the five board members violated the constitution and claim that the referendum – sent out to USA Cricket’s 725 members at the time in November 2020 – did not receive the 67% supermajority as required. The five are alleged to have voted to approve the referendum with a simple majority (between 51% and 66%) of individual member votes. The lawsuit also alleges that Higgins tampered with the referendum voting process by having access to in-progress tracking of votes electronically submitted ahead of the final voting deadline, and that he directly contacted members who had yet to vote to encourage them to vote in favour of the referendum. In December, USA Cricket claimed that the referendum was approved by the board of directors “alongside independent legal advice that had been obtained from its expert legal counsel”, but didn’t state that it had passed with a 67% supermajority. USA Cricket refused to make public full voting results when asked by ESPNcricinfo, saying it was a “confidential” matter. The consequence of the resolution has been to expand the voting base from 725 members to nearly 20,000. Higgins has previously stated that passing of the referendum was to ensure “a more inclusive governance structure moving forward”. At least 141 leagues were subsequently listed by USA Cricket in which clubs and leagues were eligible to align themselves as part of the expanded individual membership sign-up period ending on March 15.A successful lawsuit could potentially be beneficial to someone like Pisike. Of the 725 members, 232 (32%) were based in Georgia, which is Pisike’s home territory and was a significant factor in his re-election. Expanding that would dilute a power base.In contrast, a board member like Ajith Bhaskar of New York, might gain from expanded membership. Bhaskar, a defendant in the suit, is currently up for reelection and New York is one of several areas believed to have experienced a strong surge in new membership registrations since the referendum was approved.Separately, the lawsuit also alleges that the process to reappoint Paraag Marathe to a second term as board chairman was unconstitutional. Marathe’s first term began following the August 2018 elections, in which seven newly voted-in board members chose him from among three independent directors – Marathe, Catherine Carlson and Rohan Sajdeh – to become the inaugural chairman. Marathe’s initial two-year term on the board technically came to an end last August, but prolonged delays have resulted in another election not yet taking place. The lawsuit claims that by the constitution a new chairman may only be elected following the Annual General Meeting after a constituent election. Currently, the terms of three board members – Suraj Vishwanathan, Bhaskar and Nadia Gruny – are up for re-election. But the lawsuit claims that multiple board members, whose terms have expired in August 2020, were allowed to vote in violation of the constitution to reappoint Marathe, rather than waiting for election results in which potentially different replacements on the board may vote differently. The suit also claims that USA Cricket violated the constitution by not having the current elections and an AGM by November 30, 2020. The constitution states an AGM and elections must be held by the end of November every year. However, there was no AGM or election in 2019, instead delayed to February 2020.The question likely to arise is whether or not a legal interpretation would determine that the February 2020 elections should retroactively be regarded as the 2019 election.Regardless, Pisike and Salver are seeking an injunction to block the current election process from allowing it to continue. Instead, the suit argues that the 725 USA Cricket individual members that were in place as of November 2020 should be the ones allowed to vote and that they have since been disenfranchised by having their memberships, stripped and required to go through a fresh registration process. The suit also seeks to remove Marathe pending the results of the upcoming election.
