Perth curator expects 'fast, hard, bouncy wicket' for first Australia vs Pakistan Test

Pressure has been on the ground staff after a sedate pitch in last summer’s Australia vs West Indies Test

Ten millimetres of grass has been left on the Optus Stadium pitch two days ahead of the first Test between Australia and Pakistan, but more is expected to be shaven off with head curator Isaac McDonald tipping a “hard, fast and bouncy” surface.Pressure has been on the ground staff after a sedate pitch in last summer’s dreary Test between Australia and West Indies, which went well into the fifth day. This match marks just the fourth Test to played at the 60,000-capacity stadium, which has yet to reel in fans in large numbers.A fiery wicket mimicking the WACA’s famous pace and bounce is being hoped for to help spark a Test match, with seemingly much at stake for Western Australia cricket. The drop-in pitch was moved into the stadium’s playing surface less than three weeks ago, having been curated at Optus Stadium since February. It contains the same local clay and grass species as the surfaces at the WACA, although pitches there played sluggishly earlier in the Sheffield Shield season.Related

Abrar likely to miss first Test after 'discomfort in right leg'

The Optus Stadium drop-in pitch was inserted during oppressive late-spring weather, but the match is expected to be played in somewhat milder temperatures, around 30-degrees Celsius.”The conditions are really favourable for making a really nice, fast, hard and bouncy wicket,” McDonald told reporters on Tuesday, with a green-tinged pitch notable in the backdrop. “I’m really happy with the presentation and how it’s going.”At the moment I’m at 10mm [of grass] and that’s where I started last year’s game. But there’s still a day of prep. It’s hard to give a number, but I can’t see it staying at 10. Definitely not having as much grass on top is what I’m aiming for.”With temperatures forecast to be milder, in contrast to many Perth Test matches played in stifling conditions, the pitch is unlikely to crack in the backend of the match.

“I just don’t think it gets hot enough. You need like three-four days of high 30s-mid-40s to really make it blow open,” McDonald said. “In this stadium we are quite sheltered whereas at the WACA it’s open and you get the wind, so it’s a different kind of an environment where we’re kind of stuck in.”With conditions set to be pace-friendly, there could be a temptation to bowl first for the captain who wins the toss.”I think there’s a little bit of grass on it, I can see from afar, so maybe a bit of seam movement early on and probably get a bit flatter as the game goes on,” Australia vice-captain Steven Smith said. “I assume it’ll have some decent pace and bounce, which is what it normally does here… but we’ll wait and see and play it by ear each day.”While the focus will be on the quicks, Australia’s major edge appears to be returning offspinner Nathan Lyon, who has previously extracted menacing bounce in his previous three Tests on the ground, yielding 22 wickets.”I like playing my role here. I enjoy bowling here, there’s nice bounce on offer, and it’s a nice place to bowl,” Lyon said. “The wicket looks like a typical Perth wicket. It’s all good signs.”Pakistan will be without legspinner Abrar Ahmed, who has a leg injury, and left-arm spinner Noman Ali is set to play. They started their preparation for the expected faster pitch with a centre-wicket training session at the WACA on Monday, having played a four-day match against the Prime Minister’s XI on a sedate surface in Canberra.”That was the slowest pitch a visiting team could ever play on in Australia,” Pakistan team director Mohammad Hafeez said on Monday. “As a team we are really happy with our preparations because we ticked most of the boxes.”

Netherlands out to claim another scalp as Australia look to build momentum

Australia looks set to welcome back Travis Head from injury while the Netherlands need some runs from their top-order

Would Netherlands rather beat India or Australia at the World Cup? We asked Scott Edwards

Big picture: The shared history of Australia and NetherlandsThere has long been a connection between Netherlands and Australian cricket. It is perhaps not quite as strong as South Africa’s connection to the current Dutch team. But their captain Scott Edwards is an Australian citizen, having grown up in Melbourne and played second XI cricket for Victoria. He has introduced a Netherlands team song that is a shameless rebrand of the song of his favourite Australian Football League club Richmond. From Edwards to former Dutch coach Ryan Campbell, to Tom Cooper, Timm van der Gugten, Michael Swart and Dirk Nannes, among others, plenty of Australian domestic players have had an impact on Netherlands cricket. But there will be no love lost in Delhi on Wednesday. Netherlands are gunning for another big scalp, having already taken down South Africa and potentially missed an opportunity against Sri Lanka. Australia are looking to continue their momentum. They will not be taking the Netherlands lightly, but they would love a statement win having been tested at times against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. For all the links between to the two nations as far as players and coaches are concerned, Australia and Netherlands have only met twice in ODI cricket. Both matches were at World Cups, in 2003 and 2007, and Australia were ruthless, claiming big wins while tinkering with their line-up. In fact, nobody could beat them in either of those tournaments. These two sides did meet in a rain-affected warm-up game in Thiruvananthapuram prior to this World Cup. Mitchell Starc claimed a hat-trick in a game Australia did not take seriously at all. Steven Smith and Josh Inglis opened the batting with Alex Carey at three and Mitchell Marsh did not bat but instead opened the bowling while Marnus Labuschagne also bowled four overs and picked up the wicket of Edwards.Australia won’t take this game as lightly with coach Andrew McDonald confirming on Monday that they would not be resting any of their players. They know the Dutch will be well planned and the dual spin threat of Aryan Dutt in the powerplay against possibly two left-handed openers in David Warner and Travis Head if he is passed fit, plus Roelof van der Merwe against Australia’s vulnerable middle-order could certainly cause problems. Netherlands’ biggest challenge will be getting top-order runs. But Australia’s new-ball bowlers have not taken a powerplay wicket in the last three games, and Delhi has been an excellent batting strip.Form guideAustralia WWLLW (last five ODIs, most recent first)Netherlands LWLLL1:48

Does Smith have a weakness against the ball coming in?

In the spotlight: Smith and O’DowdSteven Smith was considered vital to Australia’s chances in this World Cup given his experience in India and his prowess against spin. But Australia’s long-time No. 3, who is set to play his 150th ODI against Netherlands, is battling for form in ODI cricket this year and now may well find himself pushed to No.4 with the return of Head. Smith is averaging just 23.22 in ODIs this year from nine innings, including three ducks, and striking at just 81.64. His move to No. 4 may not help his search to find some form. He has only batted there once since the 2019 World Cup and that was against Pakistan in the last match, having slid one spot due to the promotion of Glenn Maxwell because of the game situation. He has batted No. 3 in his previous 29 ODI innings. He averages just 34.31 across 24 career innings at No. 4 compared to 52.60 at No. 3. His strike-rate is slightly higher at No. 4, but nonetheless, it is not his favoured spot.In a World Cup where the openers have dominated across the board to this point, Netherlands’ top two have simply not got going. Max O’Dowd has really struggled, making just 55 runs in four innings at a strike-rate of just 57.89. He has battled to get off strike facing 72 dot balls out of 95 in total, with 38 of his 55 runs coming in boundaries and just 11 singles. He did not play any List A cricket between the World Cup qualifiers in July and the World Cup itself, with his only match practice coming in Netherlands club cricket, some of which was played on artificial pitches. It is a huge ask to jump from that to facing some of the incredible new ball pairings he has so far this tournament and the task only gets tougher against Starc and Josh Hazlewood on Wednesday. But the Netherlands need some runs from their openers if they are to put pressure on Australia.Team news: Will Head play?Head arrived in Delhi on Saturday having been at home in Adelaide for Australia’s first four matches of the tournament, nursing his broken hand. He was optimistic he could play on Wednesday after a net session on Saturday. He faced bowlers for the first time on Monday and got through the session. If he plays he is set to open alongside Warner which will break up the in-form Warner-Marsh pairing. Labuschagne would be the likely batter to make way.Australia (probable): 1 David Warner, 2 Travis Head, 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Josh Inglis (wk), 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Marcus Stoinis, 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Adam ZampaTravis Head is back with the Australia squad•Getty ImagesThe Netherlands look set to stick with the same combination that beat South Africa and tested Sri Lanka.Netherlands (probable): 1 Vikramjit Singh, 2 Max O’Dowd, 3 Colin Ackermann, 4 Bas de Leede, 5 Teja Nidamanuru, 6 Scott Edwards (capt & wk), 7 Sybrand Engelbrecht, 8 Roelof van der Merwe, 9 Logan van Beek, 10 Aryan Dutt, 11 Paul van MeekerenPitch and conditions: Another sweltering dayThe three games in Delhi thus far in this World Cup have produced two very different results, although the common thread is that the side batting first has won easily. South Africa piled up 428 against Sri Lanka and won although Sri Lanka made 326 in reply. India galloped to their 273-run against Afghanistan, who then defended 286 easily against England on the back of a masterful bowling performance by their spinners. It will be warm in Delhi and the air quality will be poor.Stats and trivia: Starc on the prowl Starc (55) needs two wickets to go past Lasith Malinga (56) to third all-time on the ODI World Cup wicket-takers list. Glenn McGrath leads with 71 and Muttiah Muralidaran is second with 68. Australia are the only team to have gone wicketless three times in the first powerplay in this World Cup. Only Bangladesh (38.90%) have had a higher percentage of runs scored by Nos. 5,6 and 7 in this World Cup than the Netherlands (35.82%)

Sabe quanto dinheiro eu tenho no banco, amigo? Eu tenho a vida estabilizada.

£90k-p/w Wolves ace to miss indefinite number of games after injury blow

As Wolverhampton Wanderers set their sights on Premier League survival, one attacking star is now set to miss several games after the latest injury update revealed a frustrating blow.

Wolves injury news

For some time, injuries and poor squad depth looked destined to control the narrative of Wolves’ season, but Vitor Pereira’s arrival followed by a crucial January transfer window have re-written their story.

Now, the final chapter of their campaign looks set to follow the tale of Premier League survival. After shocking Bournemouth courtesy of star man Matheus Cunha last time out, the Midlands club sit five points clear of the dropzone.

Anything can happen in the Premier League, however, and Wolves will not want to rest on their laurels in the coming weeks as they aim to seal their survival with just 12 games remaining.

The games don’t get any easier though, with the visit of Fulham this evening presenting quite the challenge for Pereira’s side, particularly amid recent injury news to deal those in the Midlands an ill-timed blow.

As confirmed by Pereira, Goncalo Guedes is now set to miss an indefinite number of games following a scan on an injury sustained before Wolves’ trip to Bournemouth last time out.

Pereira can silence Jimenez by unleashing "incredible" Wolves star

Vitor Pereira will hope ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers star Raul Jimenez is kept quiet.

ByKelan Sarson Feb 25, 2025

When asked about when Wolves fans can expect the winger to be back in action, Pereira told reporters: “I don’t know. I think he went for an MRI in the morning, we will see. He has pain on the knee, it’s difficult to return for the game.”

Given that the Wolves boss is also without Hwang Hee-chan against Fulham and Jorgen-Strand Larsen has only just returned, his side must now square off against Fulham with a frustratingly limited frontline. With Cunha still available, however, those in the Midlands should still hold plenty of belief that their side can shock another in-form side.

Guedes injury comes at frustrating time

Unable to provide an update on Guedes’ comeback date, there will be some concerns about whether the winger has made his final mark on Wolves’ pursuit of survival. If that is to be the case, it will act as quite the blow at a time when the £90,000-a-week man was just starting to breathe new life into his Wolves career under Pereira.

Scoring five goals and assisting a further five in all competitions, the 28-year-old no longer looks destined to depart at Molineux. Instead, he looks likely to play a key part under Pereira – whether that be in the closing stages of the current campaign or in his manager’s first full season in charge come August.

For now, however, Wolves must cope without the winger and once again hope that Cunha lights the spark which continues to ignite their fight for Premier League survival.

When the summer arrives and the Brazilian potentially departs, meanwhile, Guedes could become more important than ever in the Midlands.

Celtic player fully persuaded to join new club after promise from manager

A Celtic player has been persuaded to leave the Scottish Champions and join a new club after a promise from his potential new manager, according to a recent report.

Celtic suffer Champions League heartbreak

The Hoops suffered Champions League disappointment on Tuesday night, as they were denied extra time as Bayern Munich scored in the dying moments of the game to secure their place in the last 16 of the tournament.

Celtic took a shock lead through Nicolas Kuhn to make the game 2-2 on aggregate, but Alphonso Davies was on hand to deliver the sucker punch in the fourth minute of injury time.

Despite being knocked out of the Champions League, Brendan Rodgers was left proud of his team’s performance, and he wants to make Celtic a seasoned club at this level.

“It’s a mixture of pride, firstly in the performance level. We have to remember this is Bayern Munich, and everyone talked about that before the game,” Rodgers told the media.

“Performance-wise, we were outstanding, played without any fear. Defended so well, with discipline, pressed at the right moments, gave them issues on that side, and able to be compact and tight in the right moment.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

“Our European credibility was always going to be important. That’s my main takeaway from this campaign. We learned some valuable lessons along the way, played some amazing football, and taken on a club of this size and magnitude – a club where one of their players is more than our budget.

“It allows us to build. Last year I felt we developed even though we never got the points. Performance-wise, I thought it was good. This season it’s been very good. We’ve made the progress that made me want to come back, and now we have to finish the season off strong. My unswerving plan is to make it a seasoned club at this level, where we can go and really hurt big opponents like Bayern Munich.”

Celtic gem has been persuaded to join a new club

As well as disappointment on the pitch, the Hoops have now suffered more off it, as according to Hammers News, Daniel Cummings’ rumoured move to West Ham is even closer after Graham Potter made the player a promise of first-team minutes.

The Hammers were keen on signing the young striker in January, while Celtic have been keen for Cummings to remain with them, as Rodgers has pleaded with the player to remain patient in his wait for a senior breakthrough.

However, he has become unhappy with the lack of opportunities in the first team, and despite Celtic trying to tie him to a new contract, Cummings looks set to join West Ham, as Potter has promised the player he will be part of the club’s first team squad next season.

The 18-year-old came through the ranks at Celtic Park, scoring 34 goals in their B team. However, that hasn’t done anything for him to get regular opportunities in Celtic’s first team, as he’s only made one appearance. That appearance came in this season’s Champions League, as he was brought off the bench for the final 11 minutes against Aston Villa last month.

The Hoops are well gifted in the attacking area, as shown in the game against Bayern Munich, as they had Adam Idah and Johnny Kenny both on the bench. So, with his contract coming to an end, Celtic can’t be surprised that the player is looking at options elsewhere, as he clearly feels moving on is the best for his career.

Crystal Palace eyeing "very quick" £10m attacker Everton bid for in January

Crystal Palace are now eyeing a summer move for a “very quick” attacking midfielder who Everton tried to sign in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Glasner planning for the summer

After a slow start to the season, Palace’s form has improved dramatically since the end of October, and they are now closer on points to fifth-placed Manchester City than they are to the relegation zone.

However, it would be a tall order for Oliver Glasner’s side to make a push for the European places, with another mid-table finish appearing to be the more likely scenario. To make the European dream a reality next season, however, the Eagles will need to recruit well and make sure to tie down some of their key players to new contracts, amid widespread interest.

Glasner is determined for club chiefs to extend Jean-Philippe Mateta’s stay at Selhurst Park, while there will also be feint hope of keeping hold of Marc Guehi, although there has seemingly been no progress made towards agreeing a new deal.

Not only is the manager looking to tie down some key players to new deals, but he is also keen to freshen up his squad with some new arrivals in the summer, with Palace now eyeing a move for SC Freiburg attacking midfielder Merlin Rohl.

That is according to a report from BILD (via Sport Witness), which states there could be a four-way battle for Rohl in the summer, with Newcastle United, Liverpool and Everton also named as potential suitors. The Toffees made two bids for the Freiburg man in the January transfer window, but their approaches were knocked back.

The 22-year-old is said to have a €12m (£10m) price tag, but with the Bundesliga side said to be uninterested in selling the midfielder, a potential buyer will have to pay considerably more.

Rohl impressing for club and country

The Berlin-born attacker has received high praise from Germany U21 manager Antonio Di Salvo, who said: “He fought his way into [Freiburg’s] team. That’s not easy. He focused on defensive work and also came into his own offensively. He’s very quick and determined. He’s very dangerous.”

Having also been lauded as a “complete midfielder” by Tomas Oral, his former coach at Ingolstadt, it is clear to see why the maestro is attracting attention from a number of Premier League clubs.

Last season, the German picked up two goals and four assists in the Bundesliga, and his defensive aptitude is highlighted by the fact he ranks in the 89th percentile for tackles per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

At 22, Rohl is at the right age to be a long-term success at Selhurst Park, so it is exciting news Palace are in the race for his signature ahead of the summer, although the fact Freiburg are reluctant to sell could be a stumbling block.
