Everton: Toffees struck gold with 2023 sale who’s now worth £22m less

Everton welcomed five new faces to the club this summer, as Sean Dyche continues to work on steering the Toffees away from a third consecutive relegation battle in the Premier League.

In the past two campaigns, the Blues have taken their bid for survival to the final day of the season, with the 2023/24 term carrying huge importance with reference to the club’s ability to progress.

The 2022/23 season was both hectic and anxiety-riddled for the Toffees, with tensions added to in the January transfer window as academy graduate Anthony Gordon protested his desire to leave the club amid the chaos on the pitch with the Blues in the relegation zone at the point of his departure.

How much did Everton sell Anthony Gordon for?

After joining Everton at the age of 11, Gordon’s strategy to force a move to Newcastle United was not received well by fans or most associated with Goodison Park.

The 21-year-old refused to train with the squad upon hearing of the Magpies’ interest, action that led to him handing in a transfer request in the bid to leave his boyhood club.

Just prior to deadline day, Eddie Howe secured the signature of the winger, paying Everton a monstrous £45m fee to obtain his services, a deal that was widely questioned at the time considering the price paid for a fairly inexperienced and unproven player.

The Liverpool-born talent made the move across Merseyside to join the Blues from Anfield in 2012 as an academy hopeful, a move that benefitted the Toffees who received a £45m profit from his eventual sale.

How much is Anthony Gordon worth now?

Gordon left Goodison having scored seven goals in 78 appearances, which theoretically isn’t a bad return for a 21-year-old who spent half of his time with the first team on a sporadic role, but not so forgivable for a £45m acquisition.

In his final season, the Englishman scored three goals in 16 Premier League appearances, before making the move to Newcastle where he faced a difficult start to life up north.

patson-daka-anthony-gordon-everton-premier-league

Writing in his BBC column, Premier League and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer dubbed the winger as 'pretty poor' during his first season at St James’ Park, reinforcing the degree of profit that Everton gained from his sale.

"Poor" was also the word used by Sky Sports journalist Dougie Critchley back in April, with the respected source going on to state that the Tynesiders had splashed out £45m on a "a League average winger".

This campaign, the 22-year-old seems more settled in his new surroundings, having scored twice in 10 appearances in all competitions so far, an improvement on his debut spell with the Magpies.

In the second half of the 2022/23 term, Gordon managed to score once in 16 appearances in the league for Newcastle, making some question just how the Blues managed to receive a sum nearing £50m for his signature.

Prior to his move, journalist Ethan Ball took to Twitter X to include Gordon as a part of the “least talented front-line” he’d seen at Everton, adding his disbelief that it had been voiced that the winger had been valued at £50m.

When revising the England U21’s stars current expected transfer value (xTV), it makes for even more of an interesting read for those at Goodison, with Football Transfers documenting the forward’s value at just €26.5m (£23m).

While it was never a desired outcome to lose an encouraging academy graduate, generating £45m for Gordon saw the Toffees receive a price that amounts to £6.4m-per-goal he scored in blue, making the pill far easier to swallow.

Rangers: Update on Kevin Muscat replacing Michael Beale

Glasgow Rangers have been linked with a managerial move for Yokohama F. Marinos' Kevin Muscat, and a reliable journalist has since revealed the chances of him moving to the Scottish Premiership.

What is Kevin Muscat's CV like?

A former professional defender, Muscat began his coaching career as assistant at Melbourne Victory before being handed the main job himself, then he later went on to become technical director and boss at Sint-Truiden, though left that role following his appointment at Yokohama in July 2021, as per Transfermarkt.

However, the 50-year-old’s contract is set to expire in January 2024 and he is yet to put pen to paper on fresh terms, meaning that as it stands, he’s set to leave unless given the opportunity to extend his stay, and this seems to have alerted chiefs at Ibrox according to some reports.

The Light Blues had allegedly been in contact with their target’s camp to discuss the possibility of him taking over from Michael Beale should the hierarchy decide to part ways with their current coach, with the Aussie Scout claiming:

"Understand that Yokohama FM manager and ex-Socceroo Kevin Muscat is considered by Rangers as a candidate to replace Michael Beale were Beale to leave the club. Contact is believed to have been made with associates of Muscat. Muscat won the J-League with Yokohama FM last season."

Are Rangers appointing Kevin Muscat?

Taking to X, however, The Daily Record's Andy Newport was quick to shut down claims that Rangers were considering a swoop for Muscat with his own updatem confirming that the rumours that have emerged are seemingly fake… at least for now.

"Sources at Rangers say no truth in this whatsoever."

Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale.

Rangers dismissing the noise that they are thinking about getting rid of Beale clearly shows that they still have faith in him, but should they for any reason have a change of heart regarding his position in the near future, Muscat could be a perfect candidate to succeed him in the dugout north of the border.

At Yokohama, the manager has taken charge of 98 games, and from that, has recorded 57 victories, 17 draws and 24 defeats, meaning that he’s taken 188 points from a possible 294 whilst averaging 1.92 points per match in a more balanced league than the Premiership, via Transfermarkt.

The Crawley-born talent, whose preferred formation is a 4-3-3 defensive set-up, also has the silverware as proof of his success having secured three trophies since the start of his coaching career, the first being the Australian Champion at Melbourne and more recently being crowned Japanese Champion and Japanese Super Cup winner at the Nissan Stadium.

Therefore, Muscat knowing what it takes to compete and be successful, not to mention that he spent a year at the club during his playing days from 2002-2003, so he's no stranger to what is required to achieve in Glasgow, and with the uncertainty surrounding his contract situation, this could be one to keep a close eye on if a change at the helm were to happen.

Leeds Keen On Signing 22-Year-Old Defender This Week

Leeds United are interested in signing a player from their Championship rivals this week, according to a key update from reliable journalist Phil Hay.

Are Leeds making more signings?

The Whites knew how important it was to have a strong summer transfer window, having performed so poorly in the Premier League last season, suffering relegation to the Championship in the process after a string of bad results left them in the mire.

It was clear that Leeds were going to find it difficult to keep hold of all of their key players, but they have largely done well to keep some important faces at Elland Road, not least young star Wilfried Gnonto, who looks set to stay after initially submitting a transfer request.

Meanwhile, a number of new signings have come in to bolster Daniel Farke's squad, with Ethan Ampadu a strong addition from Chelsea who can play at centre-back and in midfield, and Joel Piroe arriving from Swansea City to be a ruthless focal point in attack.

There is plenty of hope that more business will be completed before deadline day ends later this week, however, with Joseph Painsil and Nadiem Amiri continuing to be worked on, as Leeds look to bring them in from Genk and Bayer Leverkusen respectively. Now, a fresh target has emerged, in what could be an intriguing piece of business.

Will Leeds sign Luke Thomas?

Writing on X on Monday, The Athletic's Hay claimed that Leeds are looking to secure the loan signing of Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas before the current transfer window shuts on Friday night.

"Leicester City defender Luke Thomas on Leeds United’s radar. Left-back options reduced by Sam Byram’s injury. Two enquiries for Thomas so far. Leicester unsure about loaning to a Championship rival."

Thomas could be a shrewd signing by Leeds if they are able to get a deal over the line this summer, with the 22-year-old someone who appears to have a bright future with plenty of experience.

The left-back has played 56 times in the Premier League with Leicester, and made 85 appearances in total for the Foxes, while 15 caps for England's Under-21s further show what a talented young player he is.

Thomas has found regular football hard to come by at the King Power Stadium of late, however, starting only 11 league games last season and not yet featured in 2023/24, so he may jump at the chance to enjoy a new challenge with Leeds.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

The young defender has been described as a player wit "incredible composure" and "aggressive" by Brendan Rodgers in the past, and he should only get better with age, joining Leeds as someone who could immediately battle Sam Byram for minutes from the off, and maturing as the years pass.

Whether Leicester are willing to sell Thomas to a direct rival remains to be seen, however, as Hay alludes to, but if they allow the move to go through, it could be a signing that goes a little more under the radar than someone like Piroe, but still be a smart piece of business in its own right.

Starc's second hat-trick delivers victory for NSW

ScorecardMitchell Starc became the first bowler in nearly 40 years – and the first in Australia – to claim two hat-tricks in the same first-class match when he blasted out Western Australia’s last three batsmen to claim outright points for New South Wales against Western Australia at Hurstville Oval.Having gone wicketless in the second innings up to that point, Starc had Jason Behrendorff caught behind and then bowled David Moody with the last two balls of his 15th over, then returned to have Jon Wells caught at slip by the captain Steven Smith with the first ball of his 16th. This hat-trick followed another on day three of the Sheffield Shield match, when he had dismissed Behrendorff, Moody and Simon Mackin.Starc’s feat was the first instance since Amin Lakhani managed to do the same for a Combined XI against the Indian tourists in a match at Multan in 1978. Overall only seven other bowlers have taken two hat-tricks in the same match, and only one Australian T.J. Matthews doing so against South Africa at Manchester in 1912. Matthews’ feat is also the only time two hat-tricks have been taken by a bowler in the same Test match.Smith said that Starc’s old-ball angle from around the wicket and reversing the ball away was fiendishly difficult to deal with for any batsman. He also complimented Hazlewood for his excellent rhythm throughout his first match back from injury.”They’ve found it pretty hard for a long period of time, the shape that he gets, the angle that he creates when going so wide,” Smith said. “It’s difficult for batters, let alone tail-enders. To take two hat-tricks in a game … most people are lucky to take one in their career. They’re not easy to come by.Getty Images

“I thought [Hazlewood] bowled like an absolute genius, he’s a superstar. Starcy, I think, has probably taken a little more time to get going and get some rhythm. But the back end of today showed why he’s world-class. Patty Cummins has had a couple of good games as well. They’re up and going and bowling really well.”Starc and Cummins will rest from the final round of Shield matches before the first Ashes Test while Hazlewood will play against Queensland in Brisbane. The sheer destructive power of Starc to obliterate an opposing tail, which had also been on show in the Blues’ opening defeat of South Australia under lights at Adelaide Oval last week, meant that NSW always fancied their chances of winning on the final afternoon of the Shield match, despite a sparkling opening stand of 179 between Shaun Marsh and Cameron Bancroft, who carried his bat for 76 in the first innings then followed up with 86 on the final day. Both Marsh and Bancroft are contenders for Test spots in Australia’s Ashes middle order, and their exits were followed by less fruitful results for Hilton Cartwright, who had played as an allrounder in the most recent Test played by Australia, against Bangladesh in Chittagong. Dismissal by Pat Cummins gave Cartwright a pair for the match in what was a case of horrid timing as selectors deliberate over their options for the Gabba Test.Mitchell Marsh, the WA captain, also fell cheaply to Josh Hazlewood for the second time in the game, and from there it was a question of whether the Warriors could survive long enough to stave off defeat. Nathan Lyon gained a couple of vital – and contentious breakthroughs – winning an lbw verdict against Ashton Turner then having D’Arcy Short caught in close off what the umpire adjudged to be an inside-edge onto the pad.Wells and Behrendorff took WA into the final hour of the match, before Starc arrived to seal the visitors’ fate and his own lofty place in hat-trick history. England have been warned.

Burnley Could Repeat Maatsen Blinder With £4m-rated Gem

Newly-promoted Burnley are reportedly eyeing a move for Manchester United starlet, Alvaro Fernandez, with manager Vincent Kompany seemingly stepping up his transfer dealings having already made nine summer signings thus far.

What are the latest Burnley transfer rumours?

The latest indication is that the Clarets are closing in on a deal to poach Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge from fellow newly-promoted side, Sheffield United, with the 25-year-old set to make the move to Turf Moor for a fee of around £12m.

As per the Daily Mail, the Lancashire have also lodged an offer for Aston Villa's Aaron Ramsey for the same price, while the same report also revealed that the club are also looking to take young Fernandez on loan from Old Trafford for the upcoming campaign.

The piece adds that with it yet to be seen whether Kompany and co will be able to re-sign Chelsea's Ian Maatsen – who spent last season on loan at the club – the promising Spaniard is being considered as a potential left-back alternative.

Who is Alvaro Fernandez?

Burnley notably reaped the rewards of snapping up the aforementioned Maatsen from one of the Premier League's so-called 'big six' last season, with the exciting Dutchman going on to prove integral to the Clarets' promotion charge from his full-back berth.

Now back at Stamford Bridge after featuring in Mauricio Pochettino's pre-season plans, the 21-year-old notably scored four goals and contributed six assists in the second tier during the 2022/23 campaign, while also racking up an impressive haul of 11 'big chances' created as a marker of his attacking threat – ranking him first among his teammates for that metric.

Ian Maatsen Chelsea Burnley

The Dutchman also proved his worth in a defensive sense after averaging 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game from his 39 league outings – 38 of which came from the start – having been hailed for his form by Kompany:

"He's a very, very versatile full-back with lots of energy and great potential."

Having already seen a bid for the 5 foot 6 gem rejected by the Blues, the latest indication is that the west Londoners are not looking to allow Maatsen to depart this summer, hence turning to Fernandez as a dream alternative.

The hope will be that the latter man – who is valued at around €5m (£4m) by CIES Football Observatory – can prove just as successful as Maatsen if he is to join from United on loan over the coming weeks, having notably been dubbed "immaculate" by Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe during his time on loan at Deepdale last season.

The one-time Real Madrid youth star is still only 20, although showcased his exciting potential during that 2022/23 campaign, having also proven his worth in an attacking sense after creating six 'big chances' and racking up four assists from his 39 Championship appearances.

While perhaps not quite at the level of Maatsen yet, the former Spain U19 international did illustrate his all-round quality after averaging 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game, having also mirrored the Chelsea man's versatility after featuring at left-back or in a more advanced wing-back berth.

The 6 foot 1 machine was subsequently handed Preston's Young Player of the Year award due to that stellar impact, as he proved just why he has been described as a player with an "amazing engine and quality" by talent scout Jacek Kulig – with a bright future seemingly lying in store for the Red Devils gem.

With Kompany having played a blinder by bringing in Maatsen on a loan deal last summer, the Belgian tactician could replicate that success with the signing of Fernandez before the September deadline.

Hearts Can Sign ‘Sensational’ Nieuwenhof Partner At Tynecastle

Following a few weeks without any signings to begin the transfer window, Heart of Midlothian are looking set to make up for lost time.

Recent arrivals include goalkeeper Michael McGovern from Norwich City on a free transfer and midfielder Calem Nieuwenhof from Western Sydney Wanderers as Steven Naismith gears his squad up for the new season.

Frankie Kent could soon be the third player to arrive at Tynecastle after their bid for the defender was accepted by Peterborough United, however Naismith should also be moving forward in a bid to sign Jamie McGrath.

Could Hearts sign Jamie McGrath?

At the start of the month, The Daily Record reported that Hearts were weighing up a move for McGrath during the transfer window in a bid to bolster their attacking options.

With just a year left on his current deal, Naismith could perhaps submit an offer to Wigan Athletic in the hope that they accept, especially considering that this may be the final chance for them to bring in a decent fee for the player.

He knows the Premiership well, having had stints at both St Mirren and Dundee United, enjoying a loan spell at Tannadice last term and the 5 foot 9 gem could turn into a shrewd investment.

How did Jamie McGrath perform last season?

Despite the Arabs being relegated from the Premiership following a woeful campaign, the Irishman was arguably their only bright spark.

He managed to register 12 goal contributions across all competitions while showcasing his creative ability by ranking first in the squad for big chances created (five) and key passes per game (1.6) and should he join the Edinburgh side, Naismith could forge a wonderful midfield partnership between him and new arrival Nieuwenhof.

The Australian tends to operate in a defensive midfield role, controlling play from deep and this could allow McGrath much more freedom, as he is usually deployed just behind the striker.

The 22-year-old had a fine season in the A-League during 2022/23 as he displayed his impressive passing capabilities, ranking fifth in his squad for accurate passes per game (41.4) while also making 0.8 key passes per game, showing that even though playing from a predominantly deep position, he was still able to create a few forward passes.

This bodes well should he go on to play behind McGrath, and his defensive ability will also be key for any potential partnership to sparkle. The Australian ranked first in the Western Sydney squad for tackles per game (3.4) as he demonstrated his tenacious side and this will stand him in good stead due to the physical nature of Scottish football.

Jamie McGrath

McGrath could be given immense freedom further up the pitch knowing full well that Nieuwenhof is roaming behind him sweeping up any danger with ease.

Much was anticipated of the 26-year-old when he joined the Latics from St Mirren, with journalist Josh Bunting waxing lyrical about the midfielder.

He said: “Jamie McGrath is a sensational signing for Wigan Athletic, think that’s one of the best signings of the window , really liked him whilst he was at Dundalk, good on the ball , aggressive and direct and has a very good shot , he’ll score from belters at the DW I’m sure of that.”

It hasn’t quite gone to plan since then for McGrath, making just four appearances for his current side, and Naismith could offer him a fresh start should he lure the player north of the border this summer.

Celtic: Rodgers eyeing "one of the biggest deals of the summer"

Celtic being able to initiate a sensational deal to land Scott McTominay this summer would be 'tough to pull off', according to journalist Dean Jones.

What clubs are keen on Scott McTominay?

Last term, McTominay was used primarily as a rotational option by Erik Ten Hag for Manchester United, though he still managed to make 39 appearances in all competitions, registering three goals and one assist, as per Transfermarkt.

Nevertheless, the Scotland international could be set to be axed at Old Trafford this summer alongside Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Fred as Dutch coach Ten Hag looks to 'streamline' his squad this season, according to The Independent.

Suitors have emerged for McTominay and Celtic have been named as a potential destination for the £60k-a-week ace, as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen his squad ahead of their defence of the Scottish Premiership title.

CBS Sports via The Daily Mail report that McTominay is also on the radar of Brighton & Hove Albion and Jose Mourinho's Roma; however, Manchester United's Financial Fair Play restrictions may lead to them keeping hold of the 26-year-old for another year due to the fact they would be unlikely to afford a direct replacement for him.

talkSPORT understand that West Ham United are in the market for a central midfielder and could turn to McTominay as a potential alternative to Declan Rice, who is set for a money-spinning move to Arsenal and looks to have played his last game for the Hammers.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones thinks that McTominay would be a 'mind-blowing' signing for Celtic if they managed to convince him to swap the Premier League for the Scottish Premiership.

Jones stated: "If Celtic could land McTominay, it would be mind-blowing, to be honest. I think it would be one of the biggest deals of the summer.

"It would be huge for Celtic, but it would also be a big decision for McTominay to switch from the Premier League to the Scottish Premiership at this point.

"It would be an incredible get for Celtic if they can pull something like that off, but I think it'll be tough to pull off."

What other players could Celtic and Rodgers sign this window?

Celtic have been slow off the mark this window as boss Rodgers runs the rule over his squad in their pre-season training camp in Portugal; however, some arrivals will be expected in the next few weeks as the Irishman ramps up his market proactivity at the helm of the Scottish champions.

According to Ukrainian outlet Sport Novyny, Celtic are regarded as frontrunners to sign Brazilian winger Tete, who spent the second half of last term on loan at Leicester City. The report adds that he intends to leave his parent club Shakhtar Donetsk due to fears for his safety due to the region's ongoing conflict.

Former Leicester City loanee Tete.

Gangwon midfielder Yang Hyun-jun has been extensively linked to Celtic this window and has stated that there has been "some progress" in the ongoing transfer saga that continues to unfold concerning his potential arrival in Glasgow, as relayed by Football Scotland.

Last month, The Scottish Sun claimed that Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney would be open to a blockbuster return to Celtic on a loan basis; however, both parties would need to come to a significant compromise over wages and any fee for the agreement.
