New South Wales’ trio of Test hopefuls – Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith – struggled to make an impression on the first day of the Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at the WACA and it was left to 18-year-old Nic Maddinson to hold the innings together as the visitors were bowled out for 291. Maddinson, who struck a century on first-class debut against South Australia last month, made 72 of those to counter a strong performance from the Warriors’ seamers, and the home side’s opening batsmen then negotiated a four-over burst to go to 0 for 3 at stumps.Hughes looked in superb touch as he and Phil Jaques went past an untroubled half-century opening stand, and was particularly punishing through the covers as he rattled along at close to a run a ball. He collected three boundaries in one Ryan Duffield over and looked set to advance his claims for a Test spot before both he and Jaques fell in quick succession to seamer Drew Porter as New South Wales slipped from 0 for 83 to 2 for 90.Porter, whose last first-class appearance was in 2008-09, was only included in WA’s side for this match after Michael Hogan withdrew with a back problem. He struck in consecutive overs, trapping Jaques lbw and tempting Hughes into an edged drive to second slip. Not long afterwards Smith, batting at No. 4, chipped to mid-on where Michael Beer held a juggled catch and New South Wales were 3 for 104.When Khawaja and Moises Henriques were dispatched in the afternoon session, the visitors were 5 for 164 and wobbling. A typically bellicose 19-ball 33 from captain Stuart Clark took New South Wales close to 300, but his new-ball bowlers were unable to break through in a short burst before the close as Liam Davis and Wes Robinson dug in with extra-cautious tenacity.

Asif Zakir, with an unbeaten century, and Rameez Aziz, with 75, were the batting stars for Karachi after they lost a couple of early wickets. At the close, Zakir was on 106 and giving him company was opener Kahlid Latif who had retired hurt with the score on 11, but returned to bat at the fall of Aziz’s wicket. Abbottabad tried eight bowlers, the most successful was Ahmed Jamal with 2 for 58.

Os acontecimentos no clássico entre São Paulo e Corinthians no último domingo, no Morumbi, não foram isolados. As discussões com o meia Nene e o técnico Diego Aguirre reforçaram uma mudança de comportamento do técnico Fábio Carille, do Timão. Visto como calmo e tranquilo por quem o cerca, o comandante vem tendo atitudes ríspidas e tem se irritado mais do que de costume.

Antes do Majestoso, que terminou com vitória são-paulina por 1 a 0, Carille mostrou irritação em outras ocasiões publicamente. Um exemplo foi na entrevista coletiva após a derrota de 3 a 2 para o Bragantino, no Pacaembu, no jogo de ida das quartas de final do Campeonato Paulista. O técnico não gostou de pergunta sobre o motivo de o lateral-direito Fagner ter sido substituído, poque o jogador havia feito um gesto acusando dores na coxa, razão da mudança. Antes, após a vitória por 1 a 0 sobre o Mirassol na Arena, no dia 7 de março, ironizou outro repórter na coletiva.

Internamente, as atitudes de Carille também têm sido vistas com surpresa. Quem o acompanha de perto o vê mais bravo e ofensivo em situações cujo comportamento era diferente no passado. Há a análise de que era melhor ter evitado o conflito com Aguirre da maneira como foi. Raí, diretor executivo de futebol do São Paulo, acusou o corintiano de querer criar um clima para o jogo de volta.

Contra o São Paulo, Carille se irritou com Nene porque o são-paulino chtou a bola para fora na hora de devolvê-la no Fair Play – a bola estava com o Corinthians quando o jogo precisou ser paralisado. Depois, na coletiva, externou insatisfação com Diego Aguirre. O técnico do São Paulo não o cumprimentou no início do jogo, deixando o corintiano furioso.

Na entrevista, Carille disse que deu uma bronca no rival, que se defendeu afirmando que estava distraído com o jogo e por isso não reconheceu o treinador adversário. No fim, o são-paulino foi pedir desculpas, que não foram suficientes para acalmar os ânimos de Carille.

A mudança comportamental de Carille coincide com derrotas importantes. Contra o Bragantino, pela primeira vez ele saiu de campo derrotado em um jogo de mata-mata desde que assumiu o Corinthians – eram 18 jogos de invencibilidade. Já contra o São Paulo, perdeu a marca de nunca ter sido derrotado para o rival após seis jogos. De quebra, o Timão sofreu o primeiro revés para o adversário em jogo de mata-mata desde 2002.

Agora, Carille prepara o time para tirar a vantagem do São Paulo e seguir em busca do bicampeonato paulista. Nesta quarta-feira, na Arena, o Corinthians precisa vencer por pelo menos dois gols de diferença para avançar. Se vencer por um, a decisão será nos pênaltis.

Manchester City have suffered two injury setbacks as they prepare to host Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium where they hope to move three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

City can capitalise on Liverpool dropping points yesterday and head into the final three games with a three-point cushion if they claim victory this afternoon. However, they face an in-form Newcastle who have won four of their last six games and aim to move back into the top ten.

It won’t be an easy test for Guardiola’s side who crashed out of the Champions League earlier this week after losing dramatically to Real Madrid in extra time, and they will have to be without two of their key players.

What’s the story?

If the reigning Champions are to collect the three points then they will have to do it without the help of Kyle Walker and John Stones. Both have been casualties of the clubs tough European run in, with Stones being rushed back from injury for the first leg only to be substituted in the first half.

Walker on the other hand limped off the pitch during Wednesday’s defeat with an injury. He may have aggravated an existing problem with his ankle and City are now set to monitor him ahead of the clash according to the BBC. That said, it feels doubtful that he’ll feature.

Pep Guardiola will hope that both players aren’t sidelined for long as they can be key to the final push for silverware. Last year the Spaniard said that Walker had been “crucial” to the team’s success since he became manager so he’ll surely be somewhat worried not to have him available.

In his eyes, it will be a huge miss but Newcastle can’t take too much confidence due to the strength and depth that City have. Walker can easily be covered for by Joao Cancelo who can fill in at right-back with Oleksandr Zinchenko available to fill in Cancelo’s usual left-back spot.

Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte are also a more than capable defensive partnership with Nathan Ake also available from the bench if needed.

The strength City have in their squad is the reason they are on course to win a fourth title in five years. Their dominance over the last decade has been incredible, and despite failing yet again in their efforts at clinching that Champions League crown, they still have a lot to celebrate.

They can’t take their foot off the gas just yet, but the finishing line is in sight.

Bonner, the West Indies Under-19 allrounder, represented Jamaica earlier this year in the four-day championship and also played for Sagicor High Performance Centre in the One-Day Tournament.The CCC selectors have omitted former captain Omar Phillips, who is listed among the reserves, as well as fellow top-order batsman Nikoli Parris.The second edition of the Caribbean T20 will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium in Antigua and Kensington Oval in Barbados from Monday, January 10 to Sunday, January 23. The students have been drawn in Group A alongside Jamaica, Guyana, Windward Islands and English County side Somerset.
