Celtic dealt Alex Murphy transfer blow

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side look set to miss out on the signing of Alex Murphy this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Miles Starforth, with the Shields Gazette journalist revealing on Twitter that the Galway United defender is now close to agreeing a switch to Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

In his tweet, Starforth said: “As reported elsewhere, Newcastle hope to sign 17-year-old Galway defender Alex Murphy, who has been playing first-team football this season. Understand that the deal’s not done yet, though. He’d join the club’s U23 squad.”

A further report by RTE also claimed that the Republic of Ireland under-19 international had rejected the opportunity to join Celtic, Brighton & Hove Albion and Torino in favour of a move to St James’ Park.

Bad news for Celtic

Considering the sheer amount of potential Murphy seems to possess, and with Celtic reported to have been in negotiations with the centre-back’s representatives regarding a move to Parkhead this summer, the suggestion that the 17-year-old is now set for a move south of the border is certainly bad news for the Bhoys.

Indeed, after making his first-team debut at the age of just 16 last June, Murphy has quickly established himself as a regular in John Caulfield’s side, with the 57-year-old said to have extremely high hopes for the teenage sensation.

Speaking shortly after Murphy penned professional terms with Galway, Caulfield said: “He’s one of our own, and we’re delighted to have him sign a professional contract, his first professional contract in what we hope will be a great career.

“We have high hopes for him, and we can see his talent. The most important thing now for Alex is to work hard and continue his progress. It’s a great day for the club – and our academy.”

With Celtic having signed both Liam Scales and Johnny Kenny from Irish clubs in the last 12 months, the Hoops hierarchy may well have felt that they held the upper hand in the race for the young defender, as Scales’ 13 first-team appearances this season shows a clear pathway to senior football at Parkhead.

However, with Murphy likely being offered a much more enticing salary in a move to Newcastle, Celtic now look as if they have missed out on the signing of the “elegant ” and “ball-playing centre-back”, in the words of Galway academy coach Martin Devlin. That will come as a huge blow to the Bhoys, as the 17-year-old looks to be a player heading for great things in the game.

The appeals of the three Pakistani players against the provisional suspensions imposed on them by the ICC in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal will take place in Doha, Qatar on October 30 and 31.Michael Beloff QC, the head of the ICC code of conduct commission, will hear the appeals of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, the trio who were charged for various offences on September 2 after the allegedly exposed a plan to bowl deliberate pre-planned no-balls during the fourth Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s.Butt, Pakistan’s captain during the Test, filed his appeal last week while the appeals of Asif and Amir were received by the ICC this week. The dates of the appeal means the trio will miss, at the very least, the two T20Is and two ODIs of Pakistan’s series against South Africa in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.Beloff is the president of the British Association of Sport and Law. He attended Eton and Oxford, and was president of Trinity College from 1996 to 2006. included him in its 2008 list of the 100 most influential lawyers in Great Britain, while called him one of the top ten barristers of the decade in 1999.There had been speculation in Pakistan over the choice of venue for the hearings; some reports suggested the players were not keen on the hearings taking place in London, wary of a potentially hostile environment with extensive media coverage. One of the lawyers, however, denied this, telling ESPNcricinfo no such requests were made. Dubai, the home of the ICC, was also out of the question as Asif is barred from entering the UAE following a detention in 2008 for a drug-related offence. Doha was thus chosen after consultation between the ICC and the players.”It is important to understand that the appeals are against the provisional suspension only and will not consider the substantive charges that were laid against the players on 2 September 2010,” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said in a statement. “In the meantime, the players remain provisionally suspended from all cricket and related activities.”The case marks the first time the ICC has provisionally suspended players under its anti-corruption code. The clause for provisional suspension was included in the Anti-Corruption Code for Players and Player Support Personnel less than a year ago, and came into force on October 6, 2009 after unanimous approval from all ICC member nations.

A característica é diferente.

– A expulsão muda o jogo.

Downie drops early NUFC team news hint

An exciting Newcastle United claim has emerged ahead of their Premier League trip to Norfolk…

What’s the latest?

Keith Downie has provided his thoughts on Eddie Howe’s pre-Norwich press conference by revealing that he thinks the head coach will make changes to his starting XI for the match.

The Magpies played against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night and now face the prospect of a long trip to East Anglia on Saturday, with the ex-Bournemouth boss potentially handing rests to a number of players.

Downie tweeted: “Sounds like Eddie Howe is planning to mix things up a bit at Norwich tomorrow, given the heavy schedule the NUFC players have got through in recent weeks.”

Supporters will be buzzing

This claim from the reporter will surely get supporters buzzing about what they will be seeing against the Canaries this weekend.

The Magpies are now 12 points clear of the bottom three with five games to go and this means that they can afford to experiment with different players and formations. It would take a colossal shift in fortunes for Newcastle and all of the teams below them for the Toon to be relegated this season, and this means that Howe can now take liberties with his team selections.

Therefore, a number of players who have been starved of first-team action over the last few months could be given the chance to show what they can do.

Whilst the current stars who are nailed down starters do not have much to worry about after survival is secured, the fringe players will be fighting for their places in the squad heading into 2022/23 and this means that the supporters could well see spirited displays from a much-changed side instead of an XI that is already on the beach.

The likes of Jacob Murphy, Jamaal Lascelles, Sean Longstaff and Dwight Gayle are all names that spring to mind as candidates to come in against Dean Smith’s side.

They will all surely be keen to prove to Howe that they deserve to be part of PIF’s project moving forward and will, therefore, be determined to put in a quality showing against the Canaries, which is why it will be exciting for the Newcastle faithful to see how they get on at Carrow Road.

It will now be down to them to showcase their ability and help the side to another three points…

Bollinger to keep quiet against Pietersen

Doug Bollinger is battling to recover from a stomach injury ahead of the first Ashes Test•AFP

Doug Bollinger is never shy of giving out a few words to the batsmen, but he plans to offer Kevin Pietersen the silent treatment when the Ashes gets underway next month. Bollinger is confident that he is on track to recover from his stomach injury in time for the first Test in Brisbane on November 25 after returning early from the tour of India. If Bollinger regains fitness he is likely to slot straight back into the team having taken 49 wickets at 23.79 in 11 Tests, but he has no plans to chirp at Pietersen even though the batsman has been going through an extended form slump and has scored an international hundred since March 2009.”I don’t think I will say much to Kevin Pietersen because I think that’s what he likes,” Bollinger told . “I think I might put him off his game by not saying anything and let his ego get him out.”However, the rest of England’s batting line-up won’t escape some words of advice from Bollinger should he be ready to share the new-ball. “I tend to say a lot of things when I get angry and get a bit upset and a bit hot and flustered, but we’re playing for the Ashes,” he said.”It’s a massive thing. It’s something I’ve always wanted to be part of my whole life and I’m sure it is for everyone else. So if one of the guys gets into a contest I’m going to be right behind them as a team should be.”Bollinger’s participation in the first Test has been put in doubt after he suffered a stomach strain during the first Test against India last month and he is still two weeks away from a return. He will miss the one-day series against Sri Lanka and has just one Sheffield Shield match to prepare himself for Brisbane, but insists he will be ready to regain his place. “I’m 100 percent, I feel really good, I’m getting back into everything, so I’m going to be fine come November 25.”

– Cuido-me muito quando me perguntam isto.

Celtic: Postecoglou interested in Jeahze

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Mohanad Jeahze to Parkhead in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Scottish Sun, who claim that Ange Postecoglou is on the lookout for a new left-back this summer, in order to provide Scotland international Greg Taylor with competition for his starting spot next season.

The report then goes on to state that the 56-year-old Bhoys boss has identified Hammarby’s Mohanad Jeahze as his primary target in the position, with the Allsvenskan defender’s side believed to be willing to part with the 25-year-old for a figure in the region of £2m.

He’s perfect for Angeball

Considering just how impressive Jeahze has been for Hammarby following his 2020 switch from Mjallby, it is not difficult to see why Postecoglou would be interested in the signing of the left-back this summer.

Indeed, over his 27 Allsvenskan appearances last season, the £900k-rated full-back was a bundle of creativity on the left flank, scoring one goal, registering seven assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 2.4 key passes, taking 0.5 shots and completing 0.7 dribbles per game.

The Iraq international also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, helping his side keep five clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.5 tackles, 1.5 clearances and winning 3.7 duels – at a success rate of 54% – per fixture.

These metrics saw the 25-year-old average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.24, not only ranking him as Hammarby’s best performer in the league but also as the joint 15th-best player in the division as a whole.

In total, the left-back has notched a total of two goals and 12 assists over his 55 appearances in all competitions for the Swedish side – incredibly impressive returns for a defender.

As such, with Jeahze evidently being a talent who is incredibly creative, boasts an impressive reading of the game and is extremely capable with the ball at his feet, it is not difficult to understand why Postecoglou would be keen to bring the defender to Celtic Park ahead of the Hoops’ 2022/23 campaign – as the Hammarby star appears to be a perfect fit for Angeball.

And, if the Iraqi is indeed available for as little as £2m this summer, the 25-year-old sensation could very easily go on to join the Greek-Australian’s ever-increasing list of impressive budget buys.

Newcastle interested in Kalvin Phillips

An exciting claim has been made regarding Newcastle United and Kalvin Phillips…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that the club are looking at a move for the England international ahead of the summer window.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They’re very aware of the fact that the players have to fit into that team. Something somebody said to me earlier on was that they are interested in Kalvin Phillips.

“Can you imagine Kalvin Phillips also now going into that Newcastle midfield and taking them to another level?”

Eddie Howe is surely buzzing

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe will be buzzing with this claim, because the prospect of the holding midfielder playing for the club is an exciting one.

The 44-year-old will be delighted with PIF’s interest in Phillips’ services and will be hoping that they can get a deal over the line for him in the coming months, as he would be a superb addition to the Magpies’ team.

The 26-year-old has proven himself at Premier League level with Leeds over the past 18 months. This season, he has made 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game across 16 league appearances, after managing 4.2 per match across 29 top-flight outings last term.

Phillips has shown that he can be a destroyer in the middle of the park by constantly breaking up opposition attacks to win the ball back for his team.

He has also caught the eye at international level, with England boss Gareth Southgate saying: “He’s been excellent. The way he has taken to international football, it hasn’t surprised us because what we’d seen with Leeds, even in the Championship, we felt could convert into our team.

“We felt he could play an important role with us. To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him.”

This shows that Phillips can handle the pressure of playing on the biggest stage whilst also readily adapting to playing different styles of football under Marcelo Bielsa, Gareth Southgate and now Jesse Marsch, which suggests that he will be able to cope with a switch to St James’ Park.

Imagine the 26-year-old throwing himself into challenges and being the defensive lynchpin of Newcastle’s midfield next season. It is an exciting prospect for the Toon Army, and that is why Howe will be buzzing with the club’s pursuit of the Yorkshire-born colossus.
