Hauritz a 'lock-in' for India and Ashes – Ponting

Ricky Ponting has said that Nathan Hauritz’s performance during the last 18 months makes him a “lock-in” for the Indian tour and the Ashes series

Ricky Ponting believes Nathan Hauritz’s performances have been of the ‘highest quality’•Getty Images

Ricky Ponting believes Nathan Hauritz is a “lock-in” for the Ashes, despite the emergence of Steven Smith as a promising spinning allrounder on the recent tour of England. Hauritz missed the England trip with a foot injury but he has resumed running and Ponting is looking forward to having the offspinner available for October’s two-Test tour of India.”I’ve spoken a bit to Nathan over the last couple of weeks,” Ponting told reporters in Melbourne. “He has started running again which is a good sign, without pain in his foot. He started bowling again last week.”I will be doing a lot of work with him over the next few weeks. I’ll be facing a lot of him considering we’ve got [Graeme] Swann and Harbhajan [Singh] to confront over the next few months. Is he a lock-in? I think so. What he’s done over the last 12 or 18 months as our number one spinner has been of the highest quality. With him back to full fitness I think he’ll get himself back into the side again.”In the 12 months from the start of the last Ashes, only Mitchell Johnson took more Test wickets for Australia than Hauritz’s 43 at 31.67. Hauritz was especially impressive at home against Pakistan, when he took his first two Test five-wicket hauls, and he will be an important part of the attack in India. His spin competition in the immediate future will come from Smith, who filled the role against Pakistan and collected three wickets at 27.33. Smith also impressed with his batting, striking an entertaining 77 in the second Test at Headingley, but he could be a casualty for the first Test against India due to Hauritz’s return.Marcus North’s disappointing winter tour has left him a little more vulnerable, although Ponting is a strong supporter of North at No. 6, and does not believe Smith could play as a specialist batsman. However, having Shane Watson’s medium pace in the armoury could allow the Australians to consider playing two spinners.”Steven came along really well in the two Tests that he played in the UK,” Ponting said. “We saw towards the end of the Headingley Test his ability with the bat and also his willingness to be aggressive with the ball. That’s not an easy thing to do for a young legspinner to maintain that aggression.”He’s a work in progress but the more games that he can play is obviously going to be better for him and he’ll learn all the time. With Shane Watson in our side it gives us the flexibility to be able to look at playing two spinners.”

Celtic face competition for Carter-Vickers

According to a report from The Scotsman, Celtic could now face major competition for the capture of loan ace Cameron Carter-Vickers in the summer transfer window.

The lowdown: Celtic want Carter-Vickers permanently

The 24-year-old has been nothing short of a revelation since arriving at Parkhead on a season-long loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur, and it’s no surprise that Celtic would be looking to make the move a permanent one.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Following a recent report from the Daily Record claiming that a full-time transfer was ‘edging closer’ as the Glasgow club take advantage of a £6m purchase option, Hoops supporters might have felt that the capture of the USA international was a mere formality.

However, those hopes may be about to be tempered as multiple Premier League clubs take an interest in the defender who has already racked up 39 appearances this term…

The latest: Carter-Vickers a man in demand

As per The Scotsman, Celtic could face a battle to land the eight-cap American defender, who could add to that tally significantly over the coming months after his nation recently secured qualification for the World Cup in Qatar.

The report claims that Wolves, Burnley and Leicester City are all ‘weighing up’ a decision on whether to make an offer to sign the loanee at the end of the season.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is said to be ‘relaxed’ about the prospects of the deal, which could rise up to £10m should certain stipulations be met.

The verdict: Would be a statement signing

As the Hoops go in search of Champions League group stage football, adding the likes of the £2.7m-valued Carter-Vickers to the Parkhead squad will be imperative if Postecoglou’s men are to compete at that level.

Any attempts to scupper this deal, or indeed one to bring Jota to Glasgow on a permanent basis, will likely fall on deaf ears as Celtic have purchase agreements in place with both parent clubs.

The difficulty may come should those interested be willing to far supersede the money on offer, bringing the prospect of a fast sale for profit into the equation.

Moreover, the Hoops should be dotting the necessary i’s and crossing the t’s to bring the man hailed as ‘excellent’ by Chris Sutton to Parkhead on a permanent deal.

Kumara, Janoda take Chilaw Marians to title win

Chilaw Marians CC won the Under-23 Youth Division I title for a fifth time by virtue of the first innings lead against Nondescripts CC in the drawn three-day final at the SSC

Cricinfo staff06-Sep-2010
ScorecardChilaw Marians CC defended their moderate total of 242 against Nondescripts CC to earn a vital first innings lead and win the Under-23 Youth Division One title for the fifth time after the drawn three-day final at the SSC.Put into bat, Chilaw lost opener Geeth Alwis off the first ball, and his opening partner Lahiru Weragala followed six runs later, both falling to Sri Lanka’s Under-19 World Cup captain Chathura Peiris. Geeth Kumara, top-scoring with 98, steadied the innings with support from captain Umesh Karunaratne and Buddi Samarawickrame. But, from a position of strength at 214 for 4, Chilaw lost their remaining six wickets for 28 runs as Peiris finished with 6 for 50.NCC would have fancied their chances at this stage, but they crumbled to 88 for 5 as Chilaw’s opening bowler Arosh Janoda ran through the top-order. A 75-run stand between Shashrika Pussegolla and captain Laksiri Illeperuma raised NCC’s hopes of a revival. At 163 for 5, the game was evenly poised but Illeperuma was run-out for 35, and Chilaw captured the remaining four wickets cheaply as NCC were dismissed for 175. Janoda took 6 for 46, including the last wicket of Pussegolla who made 57.With over four sessions left, Chilaw did not press for a win and preferred to bat out the game, finishing on a mammoth 527 for 6. The final day was highlighted by the batting of Kumara and Karunaratne who completed hundreds and shared a fourth-wicket stand of 260. Kumara struck 17 fours and two sixes in his career-best 181 off 336 deliveries and Karunaratne hit 16 fours and two sixes in his 139-ball 123.Karunaratne praised the performances of Kumara and Janoda. “It was the dedication and understanding of the players that enabled us clinch the title. Right throughout the season we were never short of talent. Everyone contributed towards our success. When one player failed there was always another to take over. That was the spirit with which we played throughout the tournament,” said Karunaratne. An elated coach Mahesh Weerasinghe put the win down to discipline. “I had no problem with them which was one of the main reasons for our success. The contribution made by assistant coach SK Silva and fielding coach MMA Rohitha should also be commended.”Eight members of the winning team were rewarded by Bank of Ceylon Chairman Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe and Deputy General Manager Sam Samarasinghe who offered them employment at the bank. The bank sponsors the Chilaw women’s cricket team. Chilaw won the Under-23 title previously in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

West Ham: Moyes sets sights on Luka Jovic

According to reports out of Spain, West Ham United and by extension manager David Moyes have set their sights on Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic as the Galacticos reportedly make a decision on the player’s future.

The Lowdown: West Ham set for interesting summer?

As the Hammers now become outside contenders for a top four place, with London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal seemingly in better positions, their pull in the next transfer window could hinge on whether they qualify for the Europa League or if they even go on to win the competition this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Moyes has reportedly earmarked the signings of a centre-half and striker as major priorities for the club, with moves attempted in the winter, including for the likes of Darwin Nunez (Benfica) and Duvan Zapata (Atalanta).

As those transfers failed to come to fruition, West Ham must now look to the summer in an effort to boost Moyes’ options for 2022/23, with news now surfacing on a brand-new striker target in Galacticos forward Jovic.

The Latest: West Ham ‘fight’ for Jovic…

As per Spanish sources, West Ham and Moyes are eyeing a move for the Serbia international, who is allegedly ‘fed up’ with life at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid, who are also eager to see him leave the capital, are ‘looking for the Balkan striker’s exit’ as the Irons ‘fight’ for his signature alongside their Premier League top-four competitors Spurs and Arsenal.

In addition, with both player and club eager to see Jovic depart, this report claimed that ‘all roads reach an imminent agreement’ with any interested club willing to negotiate.

Indeed, it seems that if West Ham take their interest further, a quick-fire summer deal could be on the cards.

The Verdict: Make a move?

Jovic’s return for Eintracht Frankfurt points towards a striker with much ability when at the very peak of his powers. The 24-year-old notched a brilliant 17 goals and five assists over 25 Bundesliga starts in the 2018/19 season, perhaps illustrating why West Ham and Moyes have set their sights on him.

In more recent times, during Jovic’s brief return to Frankfurt on loan last year, their ex-manager Adi Hutter lavished the forward with praise, branding him a ‘world-class’ player after a brace against Schalke 04.

Still fairly young, and reportedly on the market for around €30m (£25m), West Ham could give Jovic a new lease of life in the English top flight and take advantage of Real Madrid’s willingness to strike a quick agreement.

Twin tons secure Worcestershire's promotion

Worcestershire will be playing Division One cricket next season after a remarkable last day run-chase snatched an unlikely promotion

George Dobell at New Road16-Sep-2010
ScorecardWorcestershire will be playing Division One cricket next season after a remarkable last day run-chase snatched an unlikely promotion. But it was not only the worn pitch and demanding target that they defied. It was also the departure of five of their senior players and a crippling financial problem that has forced them to cut their cricket budget to the bone. Their promotion is little short of miraculous.Just five weeks ago to the day, Vikram Solanki resigned the Worcestershire captaincy after a crushing defeat at Colwyn Bay. At the time, Worcestershire were still 37 points adrift of Glamorgan. Few even considered the possibility of promotion. But, since Daryl Mitchell assumed the captaincy, Worcestershire have enjoyed remarkable success. They have won three and drawn one of their four championship games under his command (it’s seven wins out of nine in all competitions) and, in all, have won four of their last six games. Some, particularly Glamorgan supporters, may feel aggrieved by this result. Certainly, Worcestershire served up some declaration bowling to gift Sussex 106 runs in nine overs and set-up the declaration.Yet the eventual requirement – 301 from 70 overs – still favoured Sussex. The pitch, twice used this season, offered variable bounce to the seamers and generous turn to the spinners.Worcestershire shouldn’t really have even gone close. But there is a fearlessness in youth. And, in the form of Moeen Ali and James Cameron, Worcestershire have two talented, young cricketers who seem to thrive in such moments. It bodes well for their future and the future of their team. Both men scored centuries. They took the attack the Sussex bowling with such alacrity, that they scored 200 in the afternoon session and paved the way to victory with almost 15 overs in hand. An anxious wait followed to see whether Glamorgan could engineer a victory over Derbyshire but, when the result came through, it precipitated rapturous celebrations at New Road. Thoroughly deserved they were, too.It was surely fitting that it was two young cricketers who should have set up this victory. Worcestershire’s success this season has, largely, been built upon the excellence of youngsters such as Moeen, Alexei Kervezee, Richard Jones and Daryl Mitchell, who at 26, is hardly a veteran.Moeen batted gloriously. At times, none of the bowlers had any answer to his strokeplay as he displayed a range of stoke and sweetness of timing that was more than a little reminiscent of David Gower. Jimmy Anyon for punished for four consecutive boundaries, while Luke Wright was hit out of the attack with something approaching disdain. Monty Panesar, despite conditions he should have savoured, was driven to distraction and cut to ribbons. Moeen scored 99 between lunch and tea and reached his century from just 106 deliveries. The comparison to Gower isn’t entirely positive, of course. It also means that Moeen is sometimes loose outside off stump and there were moments, early in his innings, when he was fortunate to survive. He escaped edges through the slips on 23 and 26 and, had Ben Brown at short-leg responded more quickly, might also have been caught on 54.But there’s substance behind the style. Moeen finishes this campaign as Worcestershire’s leading run-scorer in the championship and T20 and surely faces a winter with the England Lions.Cameron was impressive, too. This, his maiden first-class century, also came in his first game as an opening batsman. He looked secure against all bowling and, in skipping down the pitch to deposit Panesar for two straight sixes in the same over, demonstrated pleasing self-confidence and a wide range of strokes.Sussex weren’t at their best. Maybe it was the fact that they were already assured of promotion, or may it was the after effects of the previous night’s celebrations, but both with the ball and in the field, they appeared jaded. Panesar finished with 52 championship wickets but, on this surface, will be disappointed both not to have taken more and to have conceded more than four an over.Worcestershire stuttered with the winning line within grasp, but they were not to be denied. Their four-wicket victory was their seventh championship success of the season and means, one year after being relegated without a win to their name, they are back up among the best sides in the land. The fact that six of the nine Division One sides are the owners of Test grounds, speaks volumes about the uneven battle that lies ahead.Afterwards Worcestershire’s director of cricket, Steve Rhodes, credited his side’s spirit for their success. Suggesting that the departure of the bigger name players may not have done the club any harm in the long run, Rhodes also warned supporters not to expect any recruitment this winter.”At the start of the season, everyone was tipping us to finish bottom,” Rhodes said. “So this is a great effort and I’m very proud of them. A good spirit in the dressing room is massive. It’s your 12th man. We’ve had hurdles [to that] in the past. But now we have lads who enjoy eachothers’ company and enjoy playing together. It’s like Shakib said: everyone here comes in willing to work and determined to improve.”It’s important that people understand that next season is about consolidation. It will be very tough, but if we can stay up then perhaps there will be a bit more money around in a year or two.”There’s no funding. Unfortunately we will not have the finances to improve the squad in any way. We should be able to afford an overseas player, but it won’t be a top-notcher. [In Division One] we’ll have to rely on the guys who got us here.”It is true that challenges lie ahead. Worcestershire’s record – they have been promoted three times and relegated twice in the last five years – suggests that life in Division One may prove desperately tough, while the club’s financial position remains precarious. Survival remains the goal. But such worries can wait. For now, Worcestershire deserve their celebrations. In the circumstances, their promotion is an excellent achievement and their team contains a couple of players with very bright futures.
