Spinners, Dilshan humble Zimbabwe

Sri Lanka attacked from every corner, with seam and spin, to strangle and harass Zimbabwe who just about managed to get past 100. And Tillakaratne Dilshan helped them polish off the target without any trouble

How they were outHamilton Masakadza fought a lone battle for Zimbabwe•AFP

“Frankly today we were rubbish,” said Zimbabwe’s new coach Alan Butcher. And he was right. It was a one-way street in Bulawayo. Only Hamilton Masakadza turned up for Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka attacked from every corner, with spin and seam, to strangle and harass the hosts who just about managed to get past 100. Only Masakadza managed to successfully combine aggressive intent with the required skill that the rain-reduced 26-over game demanded of the batsmen. It was Sri Lanka, led by Ajantha Mendis, who called all the shots and Tillakaratne Dilshan ensured they earned a bonus point and took the top spot with a breezy knock.Mendis bamboozled with his mystery against a team he’s had much success with – 18 wickets from six games before this. Suraj Randiv troubled with his accuracy and Jeevan Mendis, the debutant leg-spinning allrounder, picked up a couple of wickets. Not that the seamers didn’t sparkle.Nuwan Kulasekara turned in an asphyxiating spell with the new ball with figures that read 3-0-7-0 and Dilhara Fernando, as ever, extracted bounce from short of a length to produce an equally tight spell. And it was Fernando who started the demolition job by removing Brendon Taylor. The nature of Taylor’s dismissal set the tone for Zimbabwe today: He stumbled out to the leg side, almost like a tailender, to a short-of-length delivery and had a lame fatal poke at it. It highlighted the urge to attack that the reduced game demanded of the hosts, but also perfectly caught the confusion in the mind of the way to go about it.Zimbabwe also faltered in their strategy. Why was Greg Lamb, a batsman with a strike rate of about 41, sent in at No.3 in a 26-over game? The pitch wasn’t so bad that they needed to stitch one end up. Lamb crawled to a 19-ball 10 which was neither here nor there and only piled pressure on Masakadza.Craig Ervine’s struggles against spin further hurt Zimbabwe. He could only eke out three runs from 18 deliveries of spin from the combination of Ajantha Mendis and Randiv. He couldn’t pick Ajantha Mendis’ variations and couldn’t break free against Randiv’s accuracy. Ajantha Mendis swallowed both Lamb and Ervine and Randiv lured Charles Coventry to hole out to the deep. And more trouble lay around the corner for Zimbabwe as they lost Elton Chigumbura , inside-edging a short delivery from Jeevan Mendis on to his stumps.Watching all the damage unfold was Masakadza. It was he who hit the first boundary with a disdainful pull in the fourth over against Fernando. It was he who hit the first six in an over where he threatened to turn things around for Zimbabwe. He went after Thissara Perera in the eighth over, thrashing him for a four past mid-off and unfurling an imperiously-pulled six to loot 17 runs. However, he too slowed down after that frenetic over. It took him a further 38 deliveries to hit his next boundary, the self-restraint no doubt caused by the alarming rate at which the wickets fell. In the end, he was the ninth wicket to fall when he top-edged a bouncer from Fernando and Zimbabwe soon crashed out for 118.Zimbabwe needed a great start if they were to pull off an unlikely heist. However, Chris Mpofu went for 14 runs in the third over as Upul Tharanga pinged the point boundary for three fours and Sri Lanka seized all momentum. Though Tharanga was run out later, Tillakaratne Dilshan, who had played a watchful, but a good knock against India in the previous game, hastened the end with an aggressive innings. He lofted Prosper Utseya for a six and a four, slog-swept Lamb to the ropes and cut Chigumbura for more boundaries. The chase was over in a blink.

Preview: Celtic vs Rangers

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side head into tonight’s Old Firm clash knowing that a win against their Glasgow rivals will take them to the top of the Premiership table for the first time this season.

However, with the 56-year-old still having a number of players unavailable due to injury, international duty and suspension, the Greek-Australian coach will once again face a number of tough decisions when putting together his starting XI this evening.

So, how many changes will Postecoglou make to the side that started the 1-0 win over Dundee United last time out? Here’s how we think Celtic could line up against Rangers, along with the latest team and injury news…

With the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Tom Rogic, David Turnbull and Yosuke Ideguchi being unavailable for the Old Firm clash, while Nir Bitton is suspended following his sending off against the Tangerines, we predict that Postecoglou will make three changes to the side that lined up in the 1-0 win at Parkhead last weekend.

The first of these alterations comes in the back four, with Josip Juranovic taking the place of 23-year-old Liam Scales at left-back – as, despite Greg Taylor being a natural choice in the position, the Croatia international who Marko Sapit dubbed an “intelligent” player has easily outperformed the 24-year-old so far this season.

The second change comes in the middle of the park, with the suspended Nir Bitton dropping out of the XI, and being replaced by the £6.75m-rated Callum McGregor – who Postecoglou recently revealed is in contention for a surprise return to first-team action following his speedy recovery from a facial injury.

The third and final change comes in the front three, with the 27-year-old Giorgos Giakoumakis having to make do with a spot on the bench after his stinker against Dundee United – with Liel Abada taking his spot leading the Bhoys attack, James Forrest switching over to the right flank and the “unbelievable” Jota making a return to the starting XI on the left.

Timão quer negociar atletas barrados do Paulista; Carille explica lista

Paul Joyce makes big Mohamed Salah claim

Mohamed Salah is hellbent on immediately returning to action for Liverpool against Leicester City this week, according to reliable journalist Paul Joyce.

The Lowdown: Salah suffers AFCON heartache

The 29-year-old suffered final heartbreak in the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday night, as Egypt lost on penalties to Sadio Mane’s Senegal.

It was Mane who fired home the winning spot-kick before Salah was even able to take his effort and it is now time to focus on Liverpool duty again.

While most mere mortals would need a break after a gruelling tournament – Egypt played 120 minutes four times in a row – the Reds superstar has other ideas.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

The Latest: Superstar wants swift return

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Joyce confirmed that Salah wants to play against Leicester on Thursday night, as the Foxes make the trip to Anfield off the back of a horrendous display at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup:

“Mohamed Salah has told Liverpool he will be back in training tomorrow, eager to play against Leicester City.”

The Verdict: Born winner

This sums up the level of drive and professionalism that exists within Salah – he has been hailed as ‘sensational’ by teammate Andy Robertson – with the attacker someone who simply wants to play football relentlessly.

He is an incredible physical specimen, which helps him retain a remarkable level of fitness – the winger has only missed three games at Liverpool through injury. Indeed, it wouldn’t be a great shock to see him on the pitch against Leicester, looking to make up for his international heartache.

That being said, Jurgen Klopp must handle Salah with care, ensuring he doesn’t suffer burnout later in the season, so perhaps it would be most wise to see him from the substitutes’ bench.

Hilfenhaus in the mix for Pakistan series

Ben Hilfenhaus hopes to be available for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan after becoming the forgotten man of Australia’s team over the past six months

Ben Hilfenhaus hopes to be available for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan after becoming the forgotten man of Australia’s team over the past six months. Hilfenhaus hasn’t played since the first Test of the home summer, when he was the Man of the Match against West Indies at the Gabba.Tendonitis in his left knee created so much pain the day after a long bowling spell that he could barely walk, but he is set for a challenging comeback for Australia A in Brisbane on Friday. All eyes will be on Hilfenhaus at Allan Border Field as he tackles Sri Lanka A over the next four days, and he wants to prove himself fit for July’s two Tests against Pakistan in England.”The biggest test is getting through this three or four days of cricket,” Hilfenhaus told Cricinfo. “I’m very confident that will be the case and then hopefully I’ll be available for selection. Then it’s up to them whether they want to pick me on the form I’m in. I’ve still got to come out here and bowl well and pull up well.”One of the problems for Hilfenhaus is that while he has been nursing his injury, Doug Bollinger and Ryan Harris have firmly established their baggy-green credentials. Clint McKay has also played Test cricket in the absence of Hilfenhaus, who knows that after such a long lay-off he will need to prove to the selectors that he is still the same bowler who troubled West Indies in November.”It’s very hard to change a winning side,” he said. “Everyone gets opportunities through blokes being injured and things like that. That’s a good challenge for me. Any injury is bad timing. I’m over this injury now and hopefully it goes away for ever and I can continue playing some good cricket.”The uncertainty of how long he would be sidelined was a major frustration for Hilfenhaus, who originally attempted a club cricket comeback in December. He wasn’t expecting to be out for the entire summer, but he is confident that showing patience and not rushing his return has been a good move.”The pain factor was the reason why I had to stop playing cricket,” he said. “It got to the point where I couldn’t even walk properly the day after bowling. That was a reason why we had to go down the long road and do the rehab.”The high-scale pain has gone away. There’s always going to be a niggle there for the next 12 months or so, so they tell me. I’ve got to find a way to keep pushing through that and get confidence to keep loading it.”Hilfenhaus is well ahead of his fast-bowling colleague Peter Siddle in the recovery stakes. In February, Siddle was ruled out for the season with a back problem and he is targeting a return before the Ashes. Australia’s Test squad to play Pakistan will be named after the Australia A match.

Leeds: Whelan wants game-time for Gelhardt

Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt deserves more playing time for the Whites, according to club ambassador Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Leeds prepare for Liverpool test

The Whites face a hugely taxing trip to Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday night, looking to produce a shock result against a team who have won their last eight games in a row.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are firing on all cylinders and have key players available again – the total opposite to Leeds – and they are strong favourites to prevail.

Marcelo Bielsa has the option of potentially starting Gelhardt, with the youngster doing well after coming off the substitutes’ bench in Sunday’s 4-2 defeat at home to Manchester United.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Whelan wants Gelhardt to start

Whelan was speaking to Football Insider about Gelhardt and believes that Bielsa should be putting more faith in the 19-year-old to start for Leeds.

The 47-year-old said:

“There’s no doubt that Gelhardt brings a spark to the side. There’s a real danger when he’s on the ball. He’s one of the only players who can glide past players and do something extraordinary.

“I definitely think he needs more game time, whether he starts every week – I don’t know. But even when he’s a sub, he needs to be the first one on the pitch if we’re trying to change a game.

“Our best attack at the moment is with Gelhardt leading the line and Rodrigo in that midfield role behind. Gelhardt just shows more intent.

“He’s got no fear. He brings that excitement and energy to the Leeds United side when he’s on the pitch.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-35/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get him in

Given how both Gelhardt and Raphinha influenced proceedings against Man United after coming off the bench, it would be nice to see both being handed starts against Liverpool.

They brought more of a vibrancy to the attack than some of those on the pitch before their introductions, with Jack Harrison potentially making way at Anfield after a quiet day at the office on Sunday.

If Gelhardt leads the line on Wednesday, with Raphinha, Rodrigo and Dan James behind him in a 4-2-3-1 system, Leeds should at least pose an attacking threat against one of Europe’s best teams at the moment.

In other news, one Leeds player could reportedly leave the club permanently this summer. Read more here.

Scotland make final after tight win

Scotland experienced some hiccups in what was meant to be an easy chase, but held their nerve to beat Afghanistan by two wickets and sealed their place in the World Cricket League Division One final with Ireland

Scotland experienced some hiccups in what was meant to be an easy chase, but held their nerve to beat Afghanistan by two wickets in Rotterdam and sealed their place in the World Cricket League Division One final with Ireland.Through a combined bowling effort, they skittled out Afghanistan for 141. Left-arm spinner Ross Lyons bagged three wickets and was supported by seamer Gordon Goudie and the leg-spin of Moneeb Iqbal, who took two wickets each. Afghanistan had begun poorly, losing two wickets inside the first five overs and despite a middle-order resistance led by captain Nawroz Mangal, who top scored with 38, they collapsed to lose their last six wickets for 43.Opener Fraser Watts held firm for Scotland in their chase with his patient 46, and at 105 for 3 it seemed they were on track for a comfortable win. But Mangal, seamer Hamid Hassan and offspinner Mohammad Nabi caused a scare, nipping out five wickets in quick time, including the last three for just five runs. However, amid the stutter, Iqbal fought the pressure with a guarded 15, off 36 balls, to keep one end stable and help his team to victory with more than six overs to spare.Ireland completed their fifth consecutive win in the ICC World Cricket League Division 1 by beating the Netherlands by 39 runs at Amstelveen and entered Saturday’s final as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. The victory was made possible by Ireland’s middle and lower order, which led the team to 177, and their bowlers, who skittled the Netherlands for 138 in the 39th over. The stars of Ireland’s defense were spinners George Dockrell and Paul Stirling, who picked up four wickets each. Dockrell claimed 4 for 35 while Stirling’s four cost only 11 in 6.5 overs. They cut through the Netherlands line-up, preventing partnerships and stifling the run-rate. Peter Borren top scored with 47, and his 73-run partnership with Bas Zuiderant shepherded the innings from 59 for 4 to 132, giving the hosts hope. Borren’s dismissal, however, triggered a collapse and the last six wickets fell for six runs.Ireland had also suffered a collapse in their innings, that of the top order. They slumped to 59 for 5 before John Mooney anchored the innings with a half-century. Useful 20s from Andrew White and Nigel Jones propped up the innings. Mark Jonkman and Bernard Loots took three wickets apiece for the Netherlands.31-year-old Loots, who replaced Maurits Jonkman in the Netherlands side only on Thursday evening, was thrilled with his debut performance. “I heard on Tuesday that I may be playing and the clearance came through yesterday so it’s been exciting and also happened quite quickly,” he said. “I bowled decently although it was very disappointing to lose as that would have crowned the day for me. I’m realistic about my role in the side – I know I’m there more as a container than a striker but I only went for two runs an over today and I’ll settle for that and the three wickets were a great bonus.”In the clash of winless teams in Schiedam, Canada thumped Kenya by six wickets. Canada’s captain Ashish Bagai made his third half-century in five matches to guide the chase after the bowlers had restricted Kenya to 153.Such a one-sided encounter didn’t seem likely when Kenyan captain Maurice Ouma (38) and Collins Obuya (23) had steered them to 105 for 3 by the 32nd over. However, the Kenyan lower-order collapsed spectacularly, the final seven wickets going down for 48 runs, with the last five only collecting 13. New-ball bowler Harvir Baidwan was the most successful of the Canadian bowlers, taking three wickets.Canada were in a bit of a bother at 71 for 4, but Bagai and Zubin Surkari stitched together an unbroken 83-run stand to reach the target with more than 14 overs to spare. Bagai scored the bulk of the runs, hitting nine fours on his way to a 78-ball 61. The two sides face off again on Saturday to in the fifth place play-off.

A ideia é alcançar evolução jogo a jogo.
