Blignaut and Marillier included in provisional squad for West Indies

Dougie Marillier and Andy Blignaut are poised to return to the national side after they were included in a provisional squad for the forthcoming tour of the Caribbean.

Cricinfo staff01-Feb-2010Two more former Zimbabwe cricketers – Dougie Marillier and Andy Blignaut – are poised to return to the national side after they were included in a provisional 30-man squad for the forthcoming five-ODI tour of the Caribbean.Additionally, Sean Ervine, who was one of the rebel group which openly clashed with Zimbabwe Cricket in 2004, has been signed to play domestic cricket for the Southern Rocks franchise.According to ZC, Southern Rocks have also reached an agreement with Ian Harvey, the former Australian allrounder, who will play in the final two Logan Cup games for the Rocks and the domestic Twenty20 competition later this month. It had previously been reported that Blignaut, 31, who last played international cricket in 2005, was trying to make a comeback. He had been in discussions with the Matabeleland Tuskers franchise and has been seen in the nets at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.Marillier, another former ‘rebel’, quit at the end of 2004 to concentrate on his family’s real estate business, while Ervine has forged a successful career with Hampshire, and scored three hundreds in last season’s county championship.

Rangers eyeing swoop for Ahmed Kendouci

An update has emerged regarding Rangers and their plans to further strengthen Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad at Ibrox.

What’s the talk?

According to Algerian outlet DZ Foot, ES Setif midfielder Ahmed Kendouci is a target for the Gers in the January transfer window.

The report claims that he could be available to sign this month if a strong enough offer is submitted for him, with the Scottish champions now considering a bid.

Bye-bye Hagi

Rangers forward Ianis Hagi has been touted with a move away from the club this month, and his prospective exit could open the door for another player to arrive in his position. This is where Kendouci comes in, as he could be Van Bronckhorst’s new creative maestro in the final third.

The Romanian has started 14 Premiership matches and created 1.6 chances per game this season, with three goals and four assists across all competitions. This highlights the creativity he brings to the table, which was shown in full force last term as he ended the campaign with 11 assists in the league.

In Kendouci, Rangers could find their replacement for the Romania international. The £1.2m-rated gem has 17 goals and 14 assists in 79 career games, showing that he is routinely able to make an impact in the final third.

Last season, he produced 10 goals and 10 assists in 34 league matches for Setif. This suggests that he could come in at Ibrox and excite the fans with his ability to find the back of the net, whilst also setting up team-mates with chances to score. He could seamlessly take over the reins from Hagi if the latter moves to Galatasaray before the end of the transfer window.

Of course, there is no guaranteeing that the 22-year-old would be able to translate his form from Algeria over to Scotland, as it is impossible to gauge the difference in quality between the respective leagues. However, if he arrives at Ibrox this month and can produce similar levels in terms of goals and assists, he could turn out to be a terrific signing.

Losing Hagi would be a blow for Van Bronckhorst due to the creative spark he can provide, but signing Kendouci could soften the blow as he is a player with a similar style in the attacking midfield area. Both players have shown that they can regularly set up goals, and the Algerian could be doing just that in a blue shirt in the second half of the campaign if the Gers bring him in.

AND in other news, Van Bronckhorst could finally axe Rangers liability by signing this “aggressive” 6 ft 3 beast…

Brett Lee aims for full fitness during IPL

Brett Lee, who retired from Test cricket last month, is gearing up for the IPL which starts on March 12 and regards the tournament as the first step towards making the Australian team for the World Twenty20 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. Lee had missed the entire Australian summer due to an elbow injury, but is confident of returning to full fitness during the course of the IPL.”I’ve been working very, very closely with Patrick Farhart — he’s been my physio for 16 years — and he’s happy with the way it’s progressing,” Lee, who has been named in Australia’s 30-man preliminary squad for the World Twenty20, told the Sydney Morning Herald. “I’m looking to be up to full pace within a couple of weeks.”Lee added his retirement from Tests had not diluted his ambitions, for he had much to achieve in the limited-overs format. “It was . . . a lifestyle choice through having a young son. I don’t want to be away 11 months of the year,” Lee said, speaking from Dubai at the opening of a training centre for the Kings XI Punjab franchise. “There are many things I want to achieve in the shorter form of the game. One, the Twenty20 World cup for Australia; and two, the 50-over World Cup for Australia in India. I want to be a part of that.”Lee played four matches in the IPL’s inaugural edition, taking four wickets at 28 and followed that up with five wickets in five matches the next year, at 22.20. He was more successful in the Champions League Twenty20. His all-round effort in the final against Trinidad and Tobago won New South Wales the competition, and he was also named Player of the Tournament. The experience of recovering well from injury and succeeding at the highest level, Lee said, was reason to be confident of a strong comeback in the IPL.”Just like anything, experience [matters],” Lee said. “Unfortunately or fortunately — whichever way you look at it — I’ve had a few operations now so I really know what you’ve got to do after it. If it was the first one then I’d be a little bit nervous but I’ve been through it before so I know what I have to do. It doesn’t make it [physically] any easier but it just makes the mental side of things a little bit more relaxed.”In the event of a failure to return to his desired level of fitness during the IPL, Lee said he would opt out of the World Twenty20 but added the possibility was unlikely. “You’ve got to be bowling well and bowling fast. If I can’t get back and bowl the way I want to, whether it’s through [bowling with] pace or through pain, I won’t play. But I don’t think that will be the case, I’m confident my body will stand up to it,” he said.”I’ve got nothing to prove, I’m no out there to prove that I’m bigger and better than ever. I’m just going to keep trying to bowl quick and if I can do the business on the field and still enjoy my cricket that will make me very proud.”

Liverpool fans hail Jarrod Bowen update

A number of Liverpool supporters have reacted positively to claims that the Reds are continuing to track West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen.

The Reds look short of attacking options at the moment, especially with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

The hope is surely that a new addition comes into the squad in the summer transfer window, providing Jurgen Klopp with an extra face who can make a difference in the final third, especially with Mane misfiring this season and still no sign of a new Salah contract.

One player who has been linked with a move to Liverpool is Bowen, who is having an excellent season for West Ham, scoring six goals and registering seven assists in the Premier League.

According to The Athletic‘s James Pearce [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], the Reds are still keeping an eye on the 25-year-old’s progress ahead of a possible bid for him.

MS Gill criticises IPL for bending rules

The sports minister of India, M S Gill has come down strongly on the IPL for commercializing cricket at the cost of its spirit and rules of the game

MS Gill: “The whole thing is to entertain the masses. The bowler is just an instrument for this promotion”•Indian Premier League

The sports minister of India, MS Gill has come down strongly on the IPL for commercialising cricket at the cost of its spirit and rules of the game. In an interview with , Gill also questioned the conflict of interest arising out of the involvement of BCCI functionaries, with the IPL franchises.”… the BCCI, they have a direct interest as owners of teams, as people who have a direct benefit from it [IPL] and this is something very dangerous,” Gill said. “They have also used the rules against another rival league [ICL]. But the controlling body has to be for India, for cricket for the long term. It has to be totally uninvolved.”Lalit Modi, the chairman and commissioner of the IPL is the vice-president of the BCCI. N. Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary is a top functionary of India Cements, the company that owns the Chennai Super Kings franchise, while Kris Srikkant, the chief national selector is an ambassador for the Chennai side.”Those who are to make rules for everyone, for all aspects of the game and keeping in view the interest of the game and the country and the long term, have to be totally apart from being involved in IPL in any way,” Gill said.Gill accused the IPL of changing the rules and conditions to favour batsmen in the name of entertainment, thereby severely diminishing the bowlers’ role in the game. “The bowler is only the victim and the bat.. now you have mongoose bat. I look forward to a cobra bat. The boundaries have been shortened I think, as I hear. The whole thing is to entertain the masses. The bowler is just an instrument for this promotion,” Gill said.Gill cautioned that Twenty20 cricket posed a serious threat to the longer formats of the game. “The five-day Test is under challenge and you see nobody turns up for it, crowds have already been moved away. Even the 50-over game is reduced to Twent20. I sometimes say jokingly that we’ll go to T5 and then T1 and then half an over,” Gill said.
