Assim como já havia ocorrido na última quarta-feira, o Corinthians contou com um novo artilheiro no Brasileirão para vencer neste sábado. O atacante Kazim encerrou o jejum que durava desde o dia 18 de fevereiro ao marcar o gol da vitória por 1 a 0 sobre o Avaí, pela 34ª rodada.

Com o resultado, o Corinthians segue com chances de garantir o título brasileiro na quarta-feira. Para isso, o Timão precisa vencer o Fluminense, em Itaquera, e ver o Grêmio tropeçar em um dos dois próximos jogos, contra Vitória e São Paulo.

Para levantar o troféu sem depender de outros resultados, o Timão só precisa somar mais cinco pontos. Com esse cenário, a torcida não se aguentou e cantou “é, campeão” nos minutos finais da partida. Antes, já haviam avisado: “começa a fazer festa que o hepta vem aí”.

Se na quarta-feira passada o herói foi Giovanni Augusto, que voltou a marcar depois de mais de um ano e deu a vitória por 1 a 0 sobre o Atlético-PR, neste sábado quem brilhou foi Kazim. Substituto do artilheiro Jô, suspenso, o “Gringo da Favela” mandou de peito, após cruzamento de Guilherme Arana, aos três minutos do segundo tempo.

Foi o gol que deu justiça à partida. Durante toda a etapa inicial o Corinthians pressionou e chegou a levar perigo, enquanto o Avaí praticamente não conseguia passar do meio de campo. Todo fechado, o time catarinense não tinha velocidade para contragolpear e ainda abusava dos erros de passes.

O Corinthians, com o título bem perto, não mostrou ansiedade para construir o resultado. A equipe trabalhava bem a bola, principalmente pelo lado direito, com Fagner e Romero. Quem destoava era Rodriguinho, que não teve uma boa atuação e mesmo assim saiu aplaudido no segundo tempo. Isso só comprova como a Fiel está tranquila à espera do título.

No segundo tempo, mesmo após o gol, o Avaí não mostrava forças para buscar o empate. O time errou muitos passes e só tinha lampejos de criatividade quando Marquinhos pegava na bola. Não é à toa que a equipe é penúltima colocada na tabela.

Já o Timão novamente mostrou que é praticamente impossível o título escapar. Com o apoio da torcida, a equipe foi sólida e não deu brechas para a zebra aparecer em Itaquera.

Neste domingo, o Corinthians secará o Grêmio para tentar garantir o título em casa, na quarta-feira. O título parece ser só questão de tempo…

Crystal Palace are having a quiet transfer window so far, with their team currently intact for the challenges of the second half of the season as Patrick Vieira attempts to compete for a top-half finish, but with three weeks left until the window closes, they could be about to lose one of their players.

What’s the word?

Journalist, Tom Barclay, has given his perspective on the current loan situation that Jean-Philippe Mateta finds himself in at Crystal Palace, and it doesn’t look like it’s good news for Palace.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT:

“I know Mateta scored the other day, but unless he goes on an incredible run, I’m not convinced that Vieira is convinced by him, so I’m expecting him to return from his loan rather than Palace sign him permanently.”

Mateta was acquired on loan by the London club after he was putting in impressive performances for his parent club Mainz at the beginning of last season, with ten goals and one assist that had caught former Palace manager, Roy Hodgson’s eye, who signed the 24-year-old on an 18-month loan with the club last January.

Fans may be concerned

Vieira is clearly not convinced by the Frenchman’s performances so far in his presence since joining the club as head coach in the summer, and has only given Mateta two Premier League starts this season.

With rumours that the loan could be cut short fans have taken to social media to slam the potential decision to let him return five months early to his Bundesliga club. One supporter tweeted:

“I think we should just keep Mateta and forget about Nketiah and keep the money for positions that need improvements.”

The 30k-per-week star put in a fantastic performance against Milwall at the weekend in the FA Cup game, where in the 54 minutes played he scored the winning goal in the 58th minute to beat their rivals 2-1, as well as offering up some clinical play, with a fantastic pass accuracy of 93% during his opportunity for minutes on the pitch, according to SofaScore.

As a result, it seems perplexing that just as he begins to find form, he’s set to head back to his parent club.

Indeed, the supporter above makes a valid point that money on a potential successor could be better spent on other areas of the team that need improving, including the full-back areas where they are strapped for depth.

Although he’s not impressed since landing in London, fans could be concerned by the ongoing situation surrounding Mateta. After all, they’d just be losing a player and then having to fork out what could be quite a considerable sum to find a replacement.

The French manager has a big decision to make in a short amount of time on the future of his 24-year-old forward, as Saint Etienne are rumoured to be interested in swooping to offer him a loan deal this January.

With Palace linked to signing Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, Vieira clearly needs to make a quick decision on how he intends to see out the strike force of the side for the rest of the season.

Having secured a loan deal for Philippe Coutinho and now in reported negotiations for the signing of Everton left-back Lucas Digne, Aston Villa’s owners and manager Steven Gerrard have made their intentions clear in the early stages of the current January transfer window about wanting to strengthen their squad.

In terms of what other potential transfer deals could take place at the Midlands club in the coming weeks, one area that has been touted as an area that Gerrard would want to strengthen is midfield.

With this in mind, one potential option that Villa could look to sign and have been linked with in the past is Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who has been labelled as an “outgoing player” from the Italian club this month by manager Max Allegri.

Before jetting off to Juventus back in the 2019 summer transfer window, the Welshman made a total of 371 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions, scoring 65 goals, providing 65 assists and winning three FA Cups along the way.

In the Premier League, the “intelligent” midfielder, as labelled by Juventus teammate Federico Chiesa, made 262 appearances and managed to rack up a total of 40 goals and 51 assists (91 in total), not only highlighting how much experience he has in the top division but also how much of an attacking threat he can be from midfield.

Now that Juventus are apparently willing to let the 31-year-old leave this month, this could pave the way for Villa to secure a solid midfield option that should be able to hit the ground running in the Premier League given his previous experience.

As well as his experience that could be useful for some of Villa’s younger players such as Carney Chukwuemeka, Jacob Ramsey and Cameron Archer, his deadliness in front of goal could give Gerrard the opportunity to create a scary midfield duo alongside John McGinn.

The Scot has also shown his attacking capabilities this season with three goals and two assists in the Premier League, leaving only Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings with more goal contributions.

In addition to his very useful goals and assists, McGinn has shown with his overall performances this season how much of a vital player he is for Villa with a season rating of 7.14/10 from WhoScored, making him their highest-rated player.

Moving forward, if Villa are willing to negotiate a deal for Ramsey this month, this could give Gerrard’s side that added attacking dimension in midfield that could push them to the top half of the table.

Combine Ramsey with McGinn and the Midlands outfit would surely soar up the table.
