Leeds backed to sign Ross Barkley

Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley is a player Leeds United are targeting in the January transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Barkley a Chelsea outcast

The 28-year-old has struggled for playing time at Stamford Bridge this season, starting just one Premier League game and finding himself way down the midfield pecking order.

Barkley may still have aspirations of making England’s 2022 World Cup squad, in order to add to his 33 caps, but will of course may need to play more for that to happen.

The former Everton man has been linked with a January loan move to Leeds in recent days, as Marcelo Bielsa eyes up reinforcements in the middle of the park.

The Latest: Journalist confirms Leeds’ interest

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke confirmed Barkley is indeed on Leeds’ list of potential signings, talking up the idea of the move happening:

“I believe he is on their list of targets. Leeds have had a slow start to this season by their standards from last season and are sitting at the wrong end of the table.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-27/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Exciting midfield option

Barkley hasn’t fulfilled his huge promise as a youngster, having been compared to Liverpool and England legend Steven Gerrard, but he remains a talented footballer who could be a good addition at Leeds.

Former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith described him as ‘tremendous’ during his loan spell at Villa Park last season.

Barkley would offer something different to more defence-minded figures such as Kalvin Phillips and Adam Forshaw, scoring and assisting eight times apiece for Everton back in 2015/16.

Granted, he hasn’t been as prolific since then, but his ability to create chances – he has averaged 2.5 key passes per game in the Carabao Cup this season – coupled with Bielsa hopefully improving him and re-finding that confidence in the final third, means he is worth the risk on loan.

Celtic: Journalist makes Carter-Vickers claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has made a claim regarding Celtic’s possible permanent swoop for Tottenham’s Cameron Carter-Vickers, Give Me Sport report.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers under Postecoglou

Carter-Vickers was the club’s final addition over the summer, joining on deadline day in a season-long loan deal that includes an option to buy next summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-19/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Since then, the 23-year-old has been an ever-present figure at the back under Ange Postecoglou, making 20 appearances in green and white.

He’s missed just one Scottish Premiership fixture following his move and was hailed as an ‘excellent professional’ by Kenny Dalglish.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s claim

Give Me Sport shared the latest news on Carter-Vickers making a permanent Parkhead switch, suggesting both Celtic and the player are keen on a full-time move.

Reporter O’Rourke gave his thoughts on a possible permanent swoop to Give Me Sport, admitting he wasn’t sure if the Hoops could reach the £10m asking price, as reported by The Daily Record.

“Cameron Carter-Vickers has made a big impression since his loan move from Tottenham, but I’m not sure if Celtic could reach that £10m valuation that Spurs are looking for a permanent deal, though.”

The Verdict: Club record fee

Should Celtic stump up the fee for Carter-Vickers, they’d reportedly have to pay two separate add-ons which would take the deal over £10m.

That would make him the club’s most expensive signing of all time, eclipsing the £9.27m move that made Odsonne Edouard’s loan permanent from Paris Saint-Germain.

There’s no denying that Carter-Vickers has impressed at Celtic Park, however, £10m is a lot of money, especially with the Hoops already spending over £20m in the summer and seemingly looking at four January permanent additions in Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi, Daizen Maeda and on-loan Jota.

Jet-lagged Gayle to decide whether to play

West Indies’ interim coach, Dave Williams, is “almost sure” Chris Gayle will be available to play the first Test against Australia at the Gabba from Thursday

West Indies’ interim coach, David Williams, is “almost sure” Chris Gayle will be available to play the first Test against Australia at the Gabba from Thursday, but will leave the final decision to his jet-lagged captain. Gayle has spent almost 100 hours commuting between the Caribbean and Australia over the past fortnight, and is due to arrive in Brisbane barely 24 hours before the toss.Gayle is no stranger to eleventh hour arrivals ahead of Test series. He landed in England the day before this year’s first Test, having been granted special permission by his board to extend his stint in the IPL. He also cut fine his arrival for the 2008 home Test series against Australia, also due to IPL commitments, prompting Williams to quip: “He’s getting used to it.”Gayle kept fans abreast of his recent movements via his Twitter page, including updates on his mother’s improving health. That development greatly lifted Gayle’s spirits, raising hope among the West Indian team that their captain will be available for the first Test.”He should be alright,” Williams said. “Chris has done this before and he knows what is before him. It’s just a matter of getting acclimatised as quickly as possible and then the ball is in his court whether he wants to play or not. We’ve just got to wait and see and be hopeful that he’s going to be ready for that Test match. It’s going to be very important for us to have him.”Once he comes back here we’re almost sure that he’s going to play. Probably he won’t come to the nets. He’ll just take his time and rest. But it’s up to him. It’s how he feels when he gets up on the morning of the game. We’re just hopeful that he’s going to be ready in time.”Williams dismissed suggestions his team could opt to field first on Thursday to allow Gayle additional time to recuperate from his latest long-haul flight. “We’re not going to make a decision based on one guy,” he said. “If we get to the Gabba and we have a look in the morning and we feel it’s feasible for us to be bat then so be it.”Gayle’s mercy dash is the latest setback to hit the West Indian squad. A damaging industrial relations dispute and an injury to key fast bowler Fidel Edwards conspired to relegate West Indies to 12-1 outsiders with bookmakers for the Gabba Test, and Gayle’s absence would presumably see those odds inflate further.Despite the various crises confronting his team, Williams adopted a bullish stance ahead of Thursday’s series opener. “We have had a good look at the Australian bowling attack (and) we felt it’s not as experienced as previous attacks,” he said. “”Maybe we can put them under some pressure.”

– Sempre queremos ganhar, buscar a vitória.

Man City fans erupt over Fernandinho claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City fans have raved over an update out of Eastlands involving fan favourite and long-time club servant Fernandinho.

Pep Guardiola’s blues, currently top of the Premier League table and flying, have been helped largely by the stellar performances of Rodri as he seemingly takes up Fernandinho’s defensive midfield mantle.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-updates-2/” title=”Man City latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Brazilian has been a crucial player and mainstay for many years under two different managers, playing a major role in some of City’s domestic top-flight title victories during that period.

Fernandinho, who signed another one-year extension with the club earlier this year, is again at the centre of reports speculating over what the future could hold for him following a brilliant career with the Sky Blues.

Jorge Nicola (via Sport Witness), sharing the latest on what could be next for the 36-year-old, claims Fernandinho already has a personal ‘invitation’ from Guardiola to work as part of his backroom staff following retirement.

The club captain hasn’t yet decided whether he will retire or not next summer but it appears City and their manager have now presented what could be an appealing option for him.

Man City fans erupt…

After this development, it’s safe to say many supporters want to see their favourite extend his stay at Eastlands beyond his playing days – taking to Twitter and pleading for it to happen.

ATUAÇÕES: Romero dá trabalho e Egídio dá espaços no Dérbi

Confira as notas do jogo:

CORINTHIANS

6,0

6,5
Fagner

7,5
Balbuena

7,5
Rodriguinho
Voltou a jogar bem.

Eficiente.

Entrou ligado e reforçou a marcação no meio de campo, cortando bolas importantes. Deve voltar ao time no próximo jogo.

6,0
Fellipe Bastos

Faz ótimo trabalho, confirmado no Dérbi.

PALMEIRAS

6,5
Fernando Prass

Sami and Tanvir Ahmed crush Habib Bank

Mohammad Sami and Tanvir Ahmed combined quite wonderfully to steamroll HBL for 66 in 21 overs to deliver Karachi Blues their eighth title triumph

Cricinfo staff23-Dec-2009
Scorecard
Captain fantastic: Mohammad Sami, with the trophy and winners’ cheque, will leave Pakistan tonight on a high•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

If ever a fast bowling pair were going to do something special this season, it was likely to be Karachi Blues’ new-ball duo of Mohammad Sami and Tanvir Ahmed. That it happened in such dramatic manner inside three days of Pakistan’s premier tournament’s final at the National Stadium was perhaps surprising, but their awesome collaboration had Habib Bank Limited (HBL) done and dusted in a trice. Maintaining the consistency they have struck up this season Sami, 28 and on the verge of a new lease on life thanks to a Pakistan recall, and Tanvir, 31 and never quite close to national reckoning, combined quite wonderfully to steamroll HBL for 66 in 21 overs to deliver Karachi their eighth title triumph since the competition’s introduction in 1953.Sami, who will now hop on board a flight to team up with the Pakistan squad ahead of the Boxing Day Test, has given himself a massive leaping board for his first international assignment in two years. For Tanvir, the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, a match haul of 9 for 112 was the best way to cap off a tremendous season.Karachi began day three nine down and with a lead of 195, and added 12 to their total as former Pakistan batsman Asim Kamal reached a round unbeaten 50. What followed was inspirational stuff, with Sami, Karachi’s captain, and Tanvir running through HBL. An opening stand of 32 was snapped by Sami, setting the ball rolling for a manic capitulation, and according to observers he bowled a pretty fierce spell. He and Tanvir picked off the batsmen like ducks in a plastic shooting gallery: no partnership was even allowed to think about forming, the highest score was 15, and there were 11 extras.Prominent among Sami’s six victims were Younis Khan, for his second single-digit score of the game, and former internationals Saleem Elahi and Humayun Farhat. Tanvir’s 4 for 27, to go with five in the first innings, included the HBL captain and former teenage prodigy Hasan Raza for 4. The lower order was shot out in a blur with the last four wickets falling for 11 runs. What a pitch this was for bowlers. On the first day 12 wickets fell, on the second 17, and on the third 11. Sami will want to wrap it up and take it with him to Australia.Individually, this win was a triumph for him and especially Tanvir, who has carried Karachi’s attack all season. Tanvir topped the bowling charts with 85 wickets from 11 matches at 17.12, and has been key to Karachi’s domination at the top of Group B. Sami was well behind him with 38 from ten games, but this was the best way to sign off his domestic season and head to Australia. Sami was a surprise addition to Pakistan’s Test squad last week after the team management requested support for a fatigued outfit, and they have been handed an in-form bowler raring to go.
