Daniel Vettori: ‘He’s going to need some four-day cricket and as soon as he gets that I think he’s going to be able to put his hand up for selection’•AFP

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has said that Shane Bond will not be rushed back into Test cricket when Pakistan arrive next month. Vettori said Bond will be given the freedom to decide on his return after acclimatising and adjusting to the rigors of the longer version of the game after a lengthy lay-off.New Zealand will face Pakistan for three ODIs and two Twenty20s in the UAE early next month before heading back home for three Tests. Bond, who made his international comeback in Sri Lanka recently, has been included for the UAE leg. It has been close to two years since he played a Test and his availability for the first match in Dunedin, starting November 24, is not guaranteed, according to his captain.”It’s a difficult one, it’s going to be tough. Obviously that’s what we want to happen but Shane hasn’t played four-day cricket for a long, long time,” Vettori said. “We don’t want to force him into it and realise we could set him back. He’s going to need some four-day cricket and as soon as he gets that I think he’s going to be able to put his hand up for selection.”New Zealand conclude their UAE tour on November 13, after which the players join their domestic sides for the first-class State Championship. Bond will have an opportunity to acclimatise when Canterbury play Otago from November 17. But if Bond feels he is not fit for the first Test he will have to wait till Canterbury’s next game, against Auckland starting November 24, and that will mean skipping the Test.”He’s got the opportunity to play in a four-day game but that’s probably a day after stepping off the plane after being in Dubai,” Vettori said. “Whether that’s the best thing to do or not, Shane is the best judge of that.”If he plays in that first Canterbury game and goes well the selectors will definitely look at him. I’d be guided by what he says because he’s such a valuable asset that if we don’t utilise him well, we could get ourselves in trouble.”The second Test starts at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on December 3.

Leeds: Phil Hay responds to John Swift question

Reliable Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has answered a question on whether or not the Whites should spend £10m on Reading midfielder John Swift in January.

The Lowdown: Orta considering bid?

Swift has been in fine form in the Championship this season, scoring eight goals and registering nine assists in 20 second-tier fixtures.

His contract with the Royals is set to expire at the end of the season, which has led to rumours of a cut-price departure in the New Year.

The 26-year-old, described as a ‘grafter’ by Leeds YouTuber Conor McGilligan, is thought to be on Victor Orta’s radar ahead of January, with the Whites, along with Burnley and Wolves, considering bids.

The Latest: Hay’s comments

Hay ran a Q&A on The Athletic prior to Leeds’ 0-0 draw with Brighton on Saturday.

He was asked by one fan if Leeds should spend £10m on a player like Swift, who Bielsa called ‘great’ back in 2020. This is what he had to say in reply:

“Bielsa has liked Swift for a while. It’s a difficult question because deep down you question whether Swift improves Leeds long term but they’re not going to be able to spend big next month and maybe some pragmatism is a good idea. Tough call. But they can’t afford to get caught short this season.”

The Verdict: Make a bid

Leeds are fairly short of senior midfield options at this moment in time, having just four on the books in a defensive, central or attacking role.

On that basis, bringing in a player like Swift who has been in fine form this season could give everyone at Elland Road the boost that is needed for the second half of the season and beyond.

A figure in the region of £10m could also be enough due to his contract situation and £5.4m Transfermarkt valuation. He appears to be at the top of his game and is capable of playing anywhere in midfield, so no wonder he’s a player who Bielsa values, and a bid should therefore be made.

In other news: Possession lost 48 times, 22 duels lost, 1 key pass: Leeds’ 3 worst players vs Brighton.

Vijay and Karthik lead strong Tamil Nadu reply

A round-up of the second day’s play of the second-round matches of the Ranji Trophy Super League 2009-10

It was a significant day for Pankaj Dharmani as he crossed the 7000-run mark in the Ranji Trophy.•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Tamil Nadu dictated terms on the second day in Ahmedabad with a strong batting performance, led by half-centuries by M Vijay and Arun Karthik. Tamil Nadu ended the day 145 adrift of Gujarat’s 343, but lost only two wickets, with Vijay going strong with an unbeaten 91. Earlier, Aushik Srinivas and L Balaji took four wickets each to keep Gujarat from piling on a massive score. Resuming on 275 for 5, the overnight pair of Parthiv Patel and Timil Patel progressed steadily to 316 before a lower order collapse gave Tamil Nadu the initiative. Srinivas and Balaji bowled well in tandem as Gujarat lost their last five wickets for 27 runs. Parthiv went on to score 166. Tamil Nadu got off to a bad start when they lost S Anirudha for a duck in the second over but it was smooth sailing from there on as Vijay and Karthik played positively. Karthik progressed at more than a run a ball at one stage and looked set to score a century but was stumped on 87 off Niraj Patel. Vijay, who was named in the Indian Test squad against Sri Lanka, was particularly strong against the spinners and his innings included nine fours and a six. With this start, Tamil Nadu look well placed to take a first-innings lead.
Scorecard
Punjab’s seam trio of Harmeet Singh, Luv Ablish and Manpreet Gony combined to bowl out Hyderabad for 193 and secure a first-innings lead of 28 against Hyderabad in Mohali. Harmeet and Ablish’s early strikes had Hyderabad tottering at 54 for 5, and there was further trouble for the visitors when they lost the experienced VVS Laxman for 26. The score at that stage read 89 for 7, but a fighting unbeaten 73 by Syed Quadri helped Hyderabad fight back. Quadri added 52 with MP Arjun and 47 with Ashwin Yadav. Gony took three lower order wickets to bowl Hyderabad out before they could get closer to his team’s total of 221. The Punjab top order however faltered in the second innings and ended the day with an overall lead of 87. Mohammed Khader, the left-arm seamer, got rid of the openers. Pankaj Dharmani was unbeaten at stumps on 10, but it was a significant day for his career as he crossed the 7000-run mark in the Ranji Trophy.
ScorecardSanjib Sanyal led Railways’ lower order effort with 92 to post a strong 419 against Himachal Pradesh at the Karnail Singh Stadium. Sarandeep Singh, the offspinner, was rewarded with seven wickets after sending down close to 57 overs. Railways lost Yere Goud early for 58 but that’s when Sanyal came in and took control, supported by Akshay Girap and Karan Sharma. Sanyal hit eight fours and a six before he was the eighth wicket to fall, caught behind off Sarandeep. The Himachal openers began cautiously, adding 34 in 20 overs before stumpsHeavy showers ensured no play was possible for the second consecutive day between Mumbai and Orissa at the Brabourne Stadium.Group B

Scorecard
Rahul Dravid led the way for Karnataka with a half-century to secure a first-innings lead of 106 against Delhi at the Roshanara Club Ground. Delhi only managed 154 on the opening day so it was a question of how long Karnataka could extend their lead. Dravid was the cornerstone of Karnataka’s effort with 78, an innings which included 11 fours. The lower order then continued to frustrate Delhi, with the last-wicket pair of Abhimanyu Mithun and S Aravind adding 47. The seam-bowling pair of Sumit Narwal and Pawan Suyal took four wickets apiece. The Delhi batsmen put in a much better effort in their second innings, ending the day with a deficit of 13.
ScorecardSaurashtra’s Rakesh Dhurv and Sandeep Jobanputra took nine wickets between them but Uttar Pradesh held the upper hand in Rajkot as they posted 395 and halted Saurashtra’s effort with three wickets. Parvinder Singh added only two to his overnight score when he was dismissed by Jobanputra. The lower order then put together partnerships to frustrate the home side. Dhurv, the left-arm spinner, took his fifth five-wicket haul. Saurashtra didn’t get off to the best of starts, losing three wickets for 59, but Pratik Mehta and Shitanshu Kotak steadied the innings with a stand of 66.
Scorecard
A decent effort by Baroda’s lower order – led by Pinal Shah – lifted the score to 307 against Bengal at the Eden Gardens. Shah hit 63 and he was supported by Swapnil Singh, who made an unbeaten 43. Sourav Sarkar, Saurasish Lahiri and Laxmi Ratan Shukla all took three wickets apiece. Bengal were under a bit of pressure when Irfan Pathan struck to leave them at 73 for 3. But Arindam Das held firm till stumps with an unbeaten 52, with Sourav Ganguly on 15 for company.

Alan Nixon drops Derby County claim

Alan Nixon has dropped a worrying claim on Derby County’s ongoing off-field struggles.

What’s been said?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Sun journalist discussed both Middlesbrough and Wycombe Wanderers’ compensation claims against the Midlands outfit, with the former suggesting that the Rams’ financial irregularities saw them miss out on a play-off place back in 2018/19, while the latter suggest that the Pride Park side’s breaking of EFL rules resulted in their relegation from the Championship last season.

And, in response to a fan asking what his opinion on the claims lodged against Derby, Nixon said: “Up to them. Very dangerous precedent all the same.”

Fans will be terrified

Considering the sheer volume of off-field issues Wayne Rooney’s side are currently facing, with the club still being in administration and no potential buyer appearing close to completing a takeover of the club, the fact that Boro are claiming £45m and Wycombe £6m in compensation from the Rams will certainly have Derby fans terrified about their club’s future.

Indeed, speaking about the duo’s claims against the club, Carl Jackson – one of the administrators working with Derby – suggested that the issue will indeed need to be discussed with the EFL, something that – should the league’s governing body feel the Rams do indeed owe both clubs compensation – could have disastrous consequences for the Championship side.

Jackson said: “The claims are against Derby County Football Club and therefore, principally, those are issues that we have to deal with. It’s fair to say that there have been discussions with the EFL about those particular claims, and what I can say is the EFL will do what they can, working with us, to actually ensure those claims are dealt with properly and are not an impediment to our plans to restructure the club and find a new owner.”

However, as Nixon suggests, if Derby are forced into paying compensation to both Boro and Wycombe, it would indeed appear to create a dangerous president in the wider game, as any club punished by a league or competition’s governing body for breaking financial regulations would then subsequently face claims from any side who feel they were affected by the matter.

Either way, the news is certainly not good for Derby County or their fans, with the future of the Rams looking bleaker by the day.

Younis praises Afridi after big win

Pakistan’s captain Younis Khan has applauded Shahid Afridi for his Man-of-the-Match effort in the team’s comprehensive victory over New Zealand in the first ODI in Abu Dhabi. Afridi blasted 70 from 50 balls to help set up Pakistan’s 287 for 9 and then grabbed two wickets, including the key dismissal of Daniel Vettori, from consecutive balls in New Zealand’s chase.”He [Afridi] is a fantastic performer,” Younis said after the match. “The last couple of years he worked well with the bowling but now his batting is there so it’s good for Pakistan.”It was a complete professional performance led by the fantastic Afridi and [Kamran] Akmal. They changed the game after we were in trouble in the first ten overs.”There wasn’t much for New Zealand to celebrate in a match where they had Pakistan 0 for 2 but allowed a recovery and leaked 107 runs in the final ten overs. In reply, only three of New Zealand’s batsmen reached double figures and but for a 69-run stand between Vettori and Aaron Redmond, the result could have been even worse than the 138-run defeat.”We were on our way to restrict them to 220-230,” Vettori said. “But Afridi and Akmal batted very well and we strayed in the last 12 to 15 overs and in the batting Powerplay.”The win gives Pakistan an early lead in the three-match ODI series in Abu Dhabi before the sides head to Dubai for two Twenty20 internationals. Younis said it continued to be disappointing his team could not host matches in their own country.”Although we have a lot of supporters in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we still need to play some games in Pakistan,” Younis said. “I hope that we’ll soon play again in Pakistan.”

Everton Ribeiro perde pênalti, mas Diego decide, e Fla vence a Chape

Ufa.

SEGUNDO TEMPO

O gol elevou o moral do time rubro-negro, que dominou as ações e administrou o resultado.
