Di Venuto and Smith score centuries for Durham

A round-up of the action from the first day of County Championship matches

Division One leaders, Durham, established a stranglehold on their match against Sussex at Chester-le-Street after a strong performance from their batsmen on the opening day. They lost Mark Stoneman early for 5 – caught off Yasir Arafat – but that wicket was Sussex’s only success for a long time as Michael Di Venuto and Will Smith combined for a 235-run partnership for the second wicket. Di Venuto ended the day unbeaten on 141 but Smith was bowled by Corey Collymore for 101 shortly before stumps as Durham reached 264 for 2 at stumps.Nottinghamshire’s bowlers found the going tough at Taunton as a succession of Somerset batsmen got stuck in and led the hosts to 316 for 5 at the end of the first day. Marcus Trescothick, who became the first batsmen past 1000 runs for the season, dominated an opening stand of 45 with Arul Suppiah but was dismissed for 37 off 40 balls when he edged to slip. Suppiah carried on to score 51 and shared a 122-run stand with Justin Langer, who made 79. Somerset had a scare when they lost Suppiah, Langer and Wes Durston in the space of five runs, all to Ryan Sidebottom in a burst after lunch, but Zander de Bruyn and Craig Kieswetter struck half-centuries, in a stand of 108 in 28 overs, to lead their team to a strong position. Sidebottom was easily Nottinghamshire’s best bowler as he finished with 3 for 65 to push his claims for an England recall.Worcestershire’s patched up pace struggled to make the most of helpful conditions as local rivals Warwickshire reached 309 at new Road. Richard Jones and Gareth Andrews shared seven wickets, but the visitors’ innings was held together by three positive half centuries even if they paid the price for not building on the starts. The in-form Jonathan Trott, talked about as a possible England candidate, hit 67 before edging Jones to the keeper to leave Warwickshire on 160 for 5. Tim Ambrose, crucially dropped on 0 at square leg, and Rikki Clarke then provided the best stand of the innings as they added 116, Ambrose hitting 63 off 72 balls with 13 boundaries and Clarke reaching 50. However, both fell in quick succession – Ambrose caught off Matt Mason and Clarke bowled by Jones – as the last five wickets fell for 33.Click here for John Ward’s report from the first day between Lancashire and Yorkshire at Old TraffordDivision TwoA half-century from No. 11 Steffan Jones lifted Derbyshire from 233 for 9 to 303 on the first day against Kent in Canterbury. Jones is no mug with the bat – he has two first-class hundreds and six half-centuries – and he cracked 53 off 55 balls after Derbyshire had failed to capitalize after winning the toss. Chris Rogers provided a steady start with 53 and Wavell Hinds made 74 but no two batsmen stayed together long enough to forge a substantial partnership. James Tredwell cut through the middle order with 4 for 92 while Amjad Khan and Simon Cook took two apiece to give Kent the advantage before Jones’ late resistance in a stand of 70 with Jake Needham. Kent’s openers Joe Denly and Robert Key added 49 before Denly fell – pushing outside off stump – to the final ball of the day.Three Northamptonshire batsmen scored half-centuries but Middlesex’s bowlers, Steve Finn and Alan Richardson, took three wickets apiece to restrict the visitors to 288 for 9 at Lord’s. The visitors lost five wickets in the final hour to spoil the hard of the top order. Northamptonshire lost Stephen Peters for 13 but Ben Howgego and Rob White added 87 for the second wicket. White made 51 before carving to deep point and a wobble left Northamptonshire on 157 for 4. Alex Wakely and Nicky Boje, however, scored 61 and 55 to steady the innings but another stumble, after Wakely was dismissed by a full ball from Shaun Udal with the score on 254, gave the advantage back to Middlesex.Leicestershire suffered an early jolt against Surrey at The Oval, when Matthew Boyce was run out 1 by Chris Schofield to the third ball of the day, but the rest of the top-order batsmen weighed in to lead them to 291 for 4 at stumps. Greg Smith, on his first Championship appearance of the season, and Boeta Dippenaar added 139 for the second wicket but there was another period of uncertainty for Leicestershire when both batsmen in a short span. Dippenaar was out for 89 and Smith for 46 – after adding 5 runs in 90 minutes after lunch – both dismissed by Jade Dernbach, leaving the visitors on 153 for 3. HD Ackerman and James Taylor, however, forged another sound partnership too keep Surrey at bay. Ackerman was dismissed for 75 but Taylor remained unbeaten on 53.A brisk century from Alex Gidman, aided by solid contributions from the other batsmen, led Gloucestershire to a position of strength against Glamorgan in Bristol. Gloucestershire’s top-order batsmen gave their team a steady start after getting sent in but they kept falling after getting set. Adam Shantry picked up the openers – Kadeer Ali made 53 – while William Porterfield and Hamish Marshall went for 22 and 43. As a result, Gloucestershire were at 195 for 4 before Gidman converted his start into a substantial score. He added 118 for the fifth wicket with Chris Taylor and remained not out on 122 to steer Gloucestershire to 337 for 5 at stumps.

Joelinton wowed in Brentford draw

Newcastle are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season after drawing 3-3 against Brentford at St James’ Park in the first game of Eddie Howe’s reign on Tyneside.

Despite conceding three goals and coming away with just a point, one shining light on the day for Newcastle fans was the performance of Joelinton.

The Brazilian not only scored Newcastle’s second goal of the day but also showed off his attacking talents to his new manager, despite Howe not being in attendance at St James’ Park after testing positive for the virus.

In his 90 minutes on the pitch against Thomas Frank’s side, Joelinton had two shots on target, completed all three dribbles he attempted and made two key passes.

Joelinton also showed that he is capable of doing the defensive work by making two interceptions, three clearances and winning 11 of his 16 duels.

This ultimately earned the Toon attacker an impressive overall match rating of 8.1/10, making him their highest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore. He even beat Allan Saint-Maximin, who eventually ended up securing a point for the Magpies.

In addition, Chronicle Live gave Joelinton their Man of the Match award and said that “when Newcastle were under the cosh he was the last man battling for every ball”, which just goes to show how determined he was to play well and get a win for his side – and indeed for Howe.

Despite not winning the game, this performance from the 25-year-old will certainly be encouraging for the fans and his new manager, who recently suggested that the Brazilian could be a “huge player” for the Toon going forward.

If he can continue putting in similar performances from now until the end of the season and add some more goals and assists to his tally, he could well steer his side out of the relegation zone and repay the faith in him shown by Howe.

Sangakkara salutes bowling unit

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has said the amount of pressure that his bowlers built around New Zealand paid off and brought them victory on the final day of the first Test

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has said the amount of pressure his bowlers built around New Zealand paid off and brought them victory on the final day of the first Test in Galle.”It wasn’t an easy victory, I think we had to work very hard for it,” Sangakkara said after Sri Lanka won by 202 runs. “It’s the amount of pressure we built around the New Zealand batsmen that really paid off. We kept the run-rate down at 1.8 runs an over and right throughout the game it didn’t go beyond the average of 2.5 runs an over. Once we do that, especially with our first-innings total, we were always going to have them on the back foot and on the defensive.”Sangakkara said Dilshan’s aggressive batting was another key factor behind the success. “Dilshan’s batting in the first innings got us out of trouble and in the second innings he gave us enough time to declare.”Everything Dilshan does have brought us results either with his bowling, a crucial run-out on the field, a brilliant catch or with his batting,” Sangakkara said. “We asked him to take on a lot of responsibility this year and he’s matured as a cricketer willing to take on the responsibility. Opening in this series is another task we’ve entrusted him with. He took it in the right spirit and made it a great success for himself.”Left-arm fast bowler Thilan Thushara was another impressive performer, taking six wickets in the match, but Sangakkara said Thushara had a long way to go before taking on the mantle of the great Chaminda Vaas. “Thilan is a different type of bowler. He doesn’t get the same amount of swing that Vaasy does,” he said. “What he does get is he is consistently at 140-plus kmph, swings and seams, and at that pace when that happens even on flat decks like this he gets batsmen into trouble. He is on the right track we just want to make sure he stays there and keeps improving. [Nuwan] Kulasekera and Thushara have been a huge bonus for us this year in all forms of the game.”The return of Prasanna Jayawardene as wicketkeeper was also a huge bonus, Sangakkara added. “Prasanna was amazing. I always maintained that he is the best wicketkeeper in the world by far and he just showed us why that is today. He was very tidy behind the stumps, took every single chance that came his way and exerted a lot of pressure on the batsmen by the way he went about his job. The real positive for us was the way he batted in the second innings.”Sangakkara said that if the New Zealand batsmen batted like their captain, Daniel Vettori (who made a battling 67), the game would have gone on for a longer period. “The character that Dan Vettori showed especially with his batting in both innings just goes to show that one or two partnerships like that could have stretched the game for longer but the pressure we put on them was relentless with Mendis, Murali, Thushara and occasional bowlers coming in and picking up wickets.”

Wolves: Fans hail Rayan Ait-Nouri skill

Some Wolves supporters have been hailing a brilliant piece of skill produced by Rayan Ait-Nouri in the weekend victory over West Ham.

Bruno Lage’s side are still on a high after seeing off the Hammers at Molineux on Saturday, with Raul Jimenez’s goal earning them a 1-0 win.

It was a victory which further suggested that Wolves could be eyeing up European football this season, with their sixth-place position achieved after a strong run of form.

Lage has got his team playing attacking football and picking up positive results at the same time, with his players performing well both individually and as a collective.

One player who shone against West Ham was Ait-Nouri, with five tackles and seven duels won on the day. On Tuesday, Wolves’ official Twitter channel posted a video of him producing a superb piece of skill on the touchline, backheeling the ball to take out Tomas Soucek in one slick movement.

These Wanderers fans took to Twitter to hail the left-back’s moment of quality, with one hailing him as a “baller” and another revelling about how he “had West Ham on strings”.

Hampshire victory eases relegation fears

After failing to win any of their last seven Championship matches, Hampshire secured the victory they needed to lift them away from the relegation positions at New Road

George Dobell at New Road11-Sep-2009
ScorecardHampshire, and Dominic Cork in particular, must wish they played Worcestershire every week. After failing to win any of their last seven Championship matches, Hampshire secured the victory they needed to lift them away from the relegation positions at New Road. They are not yet assured of safety, however, and probably need to avoid defeat in their final two games, against and Durham (home) and Yorkshire (away). It was a particularly fine game for Cork. Now aged 38, he may have lost a little pace, but he showed that an ability to shape the ball away from the batsman and deliver a probing line and length are timeless skills. They are not always rewarded so generously, though. This was his first five-wicket haul since June 2006 and only his second in the last five years. It also meant he had taken 12 for 81 against Worcestershire in the Championship season. Bowling is not always so straightforward. There was some encouragement from a Worcestershire perspective. The batting of Alexi Kervezee – who was celebrating his 20th birthday – and Richard Jones – who is just 22, not only delayed the inevitable, but also suggested a little room for optimism at New Road. Here, at least, are a couple of players who might form the nucleus of a new Worcestershire.Kervezee is a particularly exciting prospect. A short, compact right-hander, his drives through extra-cover bear the hallmark of real class, though he may have to curb his impetuousness if he is to flourish. His dismissal here, attempting a repeat of a delightful straight drive for six off Imran Tahir, was a case in point: Imran saw him coming and delivered a much shorter, quicker delivery that left Kervezee hopelessly out of position and resulted in a tame catch to mid-off. It was an unworthy end to a pleasing innings.Jones is a neat, technically correct batsman, too. Though this was a career-best effort, there is no reason why he should not score far more runs.Their resilience – the pair added 70 for the seventh wicket – helped Worcestershire stretch the game into the second session of the day and forced Hampshire to bat again. But it was only delaying the inevitable; the visitors required just nine deliveries to secure victory. It was Worcestershire’s tenth defeat in 14 Championship games this season and meant that they’ve now gone 18 first-class games without a win. Not since May 2004 have Worcestershire won a Division One game at New Road.Earlier it had taken only 13 deliveries for Hampshire to breakthrough in the morning. Cork, finding some bounce, induced an edge from Steve Davies before Moeen Ali’s indeterminate prod resulted in another slip catch.Afterwards Stephen Moore remained non-committal about his plans for the future, though he did suggest he would come to a decision “within a month.” Moore, who signed a three-year contract about 12 months ago, has a get-out clause in the case of Worcestershire’s relegation so is now free to talk to other counties should he wish.”Some time over the next month I’ll have to come to some sort of decision,” he said. “We’ve two big one-day games left, though, so it would be wrong decide now. I know I’ll have to decide soon enough”The key thing is to decide how I can best progress as a cricketer. My ambition is to play for England, so if I feel I’m not able to fulfil that ambition at the club – that the club can’t offer what I need – then I’ll sit down with the club and discuss things. I’ll chat with the England management about how to progress.”I’m not just trying to leave to make money. It’s a about trying to be the best cricketer I can be. I love this place. I’ve really enjoyed every minute here and I’ve made some great friends, but I don’t want emotion to get in the way of such a decision.”I wouldn’t want to go when things are bad. I’ve pride in my role and I’d like to leave a legacy here, so if I did leave I’d want to go on a high.”After an excellent 2008 season – when he scored six first-class centuries – Moore has struggled this year. He is averaging under 28 in the Championship and has failed to build on the form that had taken him to the brink of the England team.”I can’t put my finger on it,” Moore admitted. “I do believe I’m a better cricketer now. I’m fitter, stronger and feel my balance is better. But my stats aren’t in the same league as last year, are they?”I don’t think it’s much to do with the higher division. I scored a century against the Australians [for the Lions], after all. I believe the stats don’t lie over the long-term, so I’ve just got to work even harder.”I’ve missed Graeme Hick, too, both as a friend and as a dressing room influence. He gave confidence just by his presence.”
