Aamer needs to gain weight – Akram

Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan fast bowler, has said the 17-year-old left-arm seamer Mohammad Aamer needs to put on weight to add more power to his bowling.Aamer, a protégé of Akram, who called for his selection to the national side in July last year, made his international debut in the World Twenty20 and took six wickets at a strike-rate of 24 from seven matches. He played a crucial role in the final, dismissing Tillakaratne Dilshan for a duck in the first over.”I spotted him [Aamer] along with Mudassar Nazar and Aaqib Javed two years ago at a training camp,” Akram said. “He played for Pakistan under-19 and now he is opening the attack. He is definitely promising.”For someone who can consistently bowl at 90 miles an hour, Aamer is definitely cut out for pace bowling. He will get more wickets with the Kookaburra ball. He has a natural outswinger. With a Kookaburra, he will get the ball to come in and that will be even more deadly.”Aamer has said Akram is his role model and though he was born two weeks after the 1992 World Cup, he said he had watched videos of his idol and was attracted to cricket through him.In his maiden first-class season, Aamer took 56 wickets in 10 matches for Rawalpindi. He also picked up 15 wickets in List A games and was selected for the Bangladesh tour which got postponed.Akram said if Aamer maintained his fitness then Sohail Tanvir, whom he replaced in the side, would struggle to make his way back.

Newcastle transfer news on ter Stegen

Newcastle United have reportedly prepared a record offer for Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Lowdown: Barcelona’s financial woes

While the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium have an embarrassment of riches at their disposal following their completed takeover at St. James’ Park, the opposite can be said about FC Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are currently in a deep financial crisis, having to let Lionel Messi jump ship to PSG in the summer transfer window, and may be forced to sell other star names in order to balance the books.

This is where the Magpies come in, as they have already been linked with a January move for Philippe Coutinho, and could now look to try and sign ter Stegen as well.

The Latest: Offer prepared

As per El Nacional, the North East club have prepared an offer of €55m (£47.1m) for ter Stegen should Barca be willing to sell, who would be their record signing after Joelinton cost them £40m back in 2019.

The La Liga club would reportedly find that kind of offer ‘difficult to reject’, although it may be difficult to convince the Germany international to move to Tyneside himself.

It is also claimed that he has ‘no intention’ of going anywhere other than back to is native country, but the new owners would try and convince him otherwise should a deal be allowed to be pushed through.

The Verdict: Not a priority

The Toon already have Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman as current options in their squad, and so signing another goalkeeper should not be their priority at the moment, unless they can shift two of them on.

Ter Stegen is of course of a quality player, and is still considered to be ‘one of the best on the planet’, emphasised by being the ‘hero’ of Barca’s recent win away at Dynamo Kyiv in the UEFA Champions League, as he was given the joint-second highest rating out of any player on the pitch by SofaScore after making three saves.

With NUFC’s newly-found ambition for silverware, ter Stegen has won many major trophies, including the Champions League (Transfermarkt), and so would bring an elite winning mentality.

If they can strengthen other areas of the squad first of all, then signing the 29-year-old is a no-brainer, but it certainly shouldn’t be first up on the agenda.

Rangers: Steven Gerrard set to leave

A major development has emerged on the future of Rangers head coach Steven Gerrard…

What’s the talk?

According to Birmingham Live reporter Ashley Preece, the Gers boss is set to join Premier League side Aston Villa before the end of the week.

The English outfit dismissed Dean Smith earlier this week and have now moved swiftly to swoop in on Gerrard, with Preece expecting it to be confirmed within the next two days.

He wrote: “Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa all but done as he finalises his backroom staff. I’m expecting an announcement within the next 24 to 48 hours if not sooner. Christian Purslow set to get his man.”

Gutted

This update from Preece will surely leave Rangers fans feeling gutted. Unless there is a sudden late twist to the tale, Gers supporters are set to see their main man in the dugout depart for the Premier League 13 games into the Scottish Premiership season.

Rangers are on course to record a second successive title after winning the division in style last term under Gerrard’s management, ending Celtic’s domestic dominance of Scottish football. The Gers did not lose a single league match in the 2020/21 campaign and are currently on nine wins, three draws and one defeat after 13 games this term.

In that respect, Gerrard is leaving the club in a terrific position. He is not departing a side struggling at the bottom of the table or underperforming their expectations, but instead in a place where another manager has a great opportunity to come in and continue what he has started at Ibrox as they look to continue winning trophies ahead of their rivals.

However, that appears unlikely to dampen the sadness that will come with Gerrard leaving to join Villa. He has built strong foundations with supporters by winning the Premiership title last season and they will be gutted that he will not finish what he started and lift a second title – in front of a packed-out Ibrox this time around. That is why this update on his future will be devastating for Gers fans reading it.

If this report proves to be correct and Gerrard does join the Premier League side, it will be down to Rangers, particularly Ross Wilson, to alleviate the negative feelings in the fanbase by appointing a great replacement as quickly as possible.

Strauss guides dominant England

Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell built on the outstanding bowling of James Anderson and Graham Onions as the home built a strong position

The Bulletin by Alex Brown at Edgbaston31-Jul-2009England 116 for 2 (Strauss 64*, Bell 26*) trail Australia 263 (Watson 62, Onions 4-58, Anderson 5-80) by 147 runs

Barring an act of God or Duke, England should enter the home stretch of the Ashes series in the ascendancy. When Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell accepted the umpires’ offer of bad light at 5.45pm, the hosts packed their kitbags content in the knowledge that their dominant day two performance, coupled with the bleak forecast for days three and five of the Test, had made Australia’s task of squaring the series at Edgbaston difficult in the extreme.Much of the credit for England’s position of strength belonged to James Anderson (5 for 80) and Graham Onions (4 for 58), who claimed Australia’s last nine wickets for 137 runs in 40.4 overs on Friday. Their mastery of Birmingham’s conditions reopened old Australian wounds against quality swing bowling, and wrested back the momentum claimed by the tourists the previous evening.Strauss and Bell reinforced England’s advantage in the final session with an unbroken 56-run stand that owed something to fortune. Bell was somehow deemed not out by umpire Rudi Koertzen to a Johnson delivery that replays suggested would have thundered into middle-and-off, and the Warwickshire batsman made the most of his reprieve to advance to stumps unbeaten on 26.His captain, Strauss, experienced no such heart palpitations to finish the day on 64 not out in an innings marked by stoic defence and fluent driving. Strauss was seldom flustered as Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara fell by the wayside to Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus respectively to further pad his lead atop the series run-scorers’ list.Earlier, Anderson collected his seventh career five-wicket haul and his best return against Australia on a morning that left the raucous Edgbaston faithful in thrall. Ricky Ponting may have usurped Allan Border as Australia’s leading Test run-scorer in the first session, but the morning well and truly belonged to Anderson and Onions, who more than made amends for a wasteful evening session on Thursday.Onions began in the most emphatic manner imaginable, removing Shane Watson and Michael Hussey with the first two deliveries of the second day, while Anderson bookended the first session in a similar fashion with the wickets of Marcus North and Johnson in consecutive deliveries on the stroke of lunch.Anderson’s spells either side of lunch produced figures of 5 for 35, and Onions’ 4 for 37 – an analysis which might well have been enhanced if not for several dropped catches off his bowling – as Australia’s age-old problems against the swinging ball resurfaced. With heavy rain predicted for much of the next three days, England appear the only team capable of forcing a result, short of a major change in weather and Australian fortunes.Onions played a lead role in the only first-class result at Edgbaston this season – taking nine wickets to guide Durham past Warwickshire – and continued his love affair with the ground. Exploiting the heavy overhead conditions to full effect, he bowled unchanged for nine overs, during which he swung the ball extravagantly into both the right- and left-handers and threatened off the seam.He struck with the first ball of the day, beating a lunging Watson for pace to trap him lbw for 62. The dismissal served as an underwhelming exit for Watson, who the previous evening had gone some way to justifying the faith of Australia’s selectors in his first outing as a Test opener with an assured half-century.The tremors intensified for the Australians the next ball when Onions angled a delivery into Hussey, who obliged by hoisting his bat high above his head and watching helplessly as the ball cannoned into the top of off-stump. Hussey has twice been bowled this series without offering a shot – the other to Andrew Flintoff at Lord’s – and now possesses the modest record of 81 runs at 20.25 this series. Many more muddle-headed performances like this, and Australia might well ponder more changes to their XI moving ahead.Onions’ would-be hat-trick ball might have been his most disappointing of the morning – a short, leg-side offering to Michael Clarke – but could not detract from an otherwise fine spell of bowling in which he probed the Australians’ pads and proved a constant menace. The visitors steadied just long enough for Ponting to notch his 11,175th career run to overhaul Border’s long-standing national record, but he could not capitalise on his historic moment, top-edging a hook off Onions to Matt Prior for 38.Clarke appeared the only man capable of sparing Australia’s blushes, and fortune briefly smiled upon him. The vice-captain was blessed to have been ruled not out to an exceptionally close Onions lbw shout on 18, and again when dropped off the same bowler by Flintoff at second slip. Interspersed with these reprieves were some fine periods of batting in the cauldron-like atmosphere, however his hopes of leading a middle-order fightback were dashed when Rudi Koertzen adjudged him leg-before to an Anderson delivery that appeared to be slipping down the leg-side.Thus commenced a superb sequence of swing bowling from Anderson. Finding the aerial movement that eluded him at Cardiff and Lord’s, the Lancastrian crashed through for the wickets of North to a superb, one-handed catch by Prior and Johnson to a dubiously high lbw decision in consecutive deliveries. He rounded out the session by comprehensively bowling Graham Manou, the Australian debutant who had been presented with his baggy green cap prior to play.Australia coaxed a valuable 60 runs from their final two wickets, padding the total to a reasonable 263, but they would not emerge from the second session. Anderson prompted Peter Siddle into a feathered edge to Prior shortly after the lunch break to complete his first five-wicket haul side against the Australians, while Onions returned for the scalp of Hilfenhaus for a career-best 20.

Rangers in talks with van Bronckhorst

A development has emerged on Gio van Bronckhorst, regarding Rangers’ interest in appointing him as Steven Gerrard’s successor.

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Record, Gers chief Ross Wilson has already entered into talks with the Dutchman’s representatives over a potential move to Ibrox.

The report claims that talks are set to continue over the weekend, with van Bronckhorst due in London to meet face-to-face.

Excitement for Rangers

This update will surely leave Rangers fans feeling excited as Wilson appears to be moving swiftly following Gerrard’s switch to Premier League side Aston Villa earlier this week. The club are now twiddling their thumbs in their search for a new head coach and the supporters will be delighted that they are wasting no time in holding talks with van Bronckhorst over the role.

Gerrard, to his credit, has left Rangers in a superb position. They are currently sitting four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table after 13 games and this could make them an attractive prospect for coaches who are keen to come in and win a trophy this season.

Therefore, bringing in a manager who knows how to secure trophies could be a shrewd move by Wilson. Van Bronckhorst won five trophies in four years as manager of Feyenoord in the Netherlands, including four cups and one Eredivisie title. This shows that he knows how to set up a side to win silverware and that is why fans could get excited by the prospect of his arrival.

One criticism that could be levelled at Gerrard’s time with Rangers is his lack of cup success. He did not win a trophy outside of the Premiership – reaching the final once in six attempts at the SFA Cup and League Cup. Van Bronckhorst, meanwhile, reached five cup finals with Feyenoord and won four of them.

This suggests that the 46-year-old, who also has experience of winning a league title, could come in and improve Rangers’ chances of completing the domestic double or treble this season. Therefore, the prospect of league and cup success at Ibrox this season could excite supporters and leave them delighted with this update on the pursuit of the Dutchman.

AND in other news, Wilson could get Ibrox rocking by appointing divisive 43 y/o “phenomenon” at Rangers…
