Agbonlahor: McGinn walks into MUFC midfield

Aston Villa ace John McGinn would ‘walk into’ the current Manchester United midfield, that’s according to former Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Lowdown: Flying Scotsman

Since moving to Villa Park from Hibernian in 2018, the 26-year-old has made 117 appearances for Dean Smith’s side and has helped the club return to the Premier League and sustain their position in the top flight.

The midfielder has scored 14 goals and set up another 19 since moving to the West Midlands and rumours were doing the rounds over the summer linking the Scotland international with a move to Liverpool.

However, he remained at Villa and Agbonlahor has claimed that he would walk into the midfield of one of the current top four in the English top flight.

The Latest: ‘Walk into’ midfield

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Villa marksman Agbonlahor has claimed McGinn would easily get into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s midfield at Manchester United.

The 34-year-old said: “I say it everytime I see him play but when Fred gets on the ball, it’s just sloppy passes and he’ll give it away. Even when he’s in there to win the ball he doesn’t do that. I just don’t see why he’s in that team.

“There’s a lot of central midfielders who would walk into that Manchester United team. John McGinn, walks into that midfield.”

The Verdict: Midfield woes for United

United’s midfield struggles have been an ongoing issue and they have never managed to replicate the quality with which Roy Keane and Paul Scholes once graced Old Trafford.

So far this season, McGinn has completed an average of 77% of his passes per game and has won 4.5 ground duels per match in the opening seven games this season. Sky Sports pundit and former Villa player Micah Richards also stated the midfielder has ‘got everything’ after the recent win over United and the 26-year-old’s performances have merited such praise.

Fred and Scott McTominay have received stick for their performances, especially the Brazilian, and the signing of McGinn would surely strengthen United’s midfield, but Villa must do all they can to resist any potential overtures from the Old Trafford outfit further down the line.

Flower insists Harmison not finished

Andy Flower, England’s interim coach, has given a stark assessment of Steve Harmison’s position in the team and said he is currently not up to standard.England travelled to Trinidad ahead of the final Test on Friday 1-0 down in the series after the high-scoring draw in Barbados, but Flower made clear there is unlikely to be a swift return for Harmison.Harmison was dropped for the Test at the Kensington Oval after two lacklustre performances in the series, and question marks are now being raised as to whether to can rekindle the required pace and hostility to lead the attack.”At the moment he hasn’t, otherwise he would have done it,” Flower said. “But I don’t think by any means that Steve’s finished. He’s still got a hell of a lot to offer. Fast bowling is long, hard workand at the age of 30 it is only going to get harder work, so it is up to Steve really. He’s got to put in the performances which make the selectors pick him time and time again. I’ve only known Steve a little while and we are still getting to know each other better now.”In his Sunday newspaper column, Harmison said he would seek talks with captain Andrew Strauss to learn what he has to do to win back his place. Flower, though, added that it was down to him to show that he still wants to put in the hard work required to succeed at the top level.”If hard work is just a base that you start with, that’s what he’s doing at the moment, but for you to be a successful international cricketer you have to be very hungry,” Flower said. “Only he knows how hungry he is to carry on the hard yakka of a fast bowler’s life. I think he still wants to do it: he’s proud of his career and proud to play for England.”England’s attack desperately lacks a cutting edge with Harmison a shadow of the bowler who blew West Indies away in 2004 and also without the injured Andrew Flintoff. Somehow they have to conjure up 20 wickets at Port of Spain if they are to level the series and retain the WisdenTrophy.”We hope that the Trinidad pitch does a bit and makes for more interesting cricket, let alone provide the chance for one of the sides to win,” Flower said. “Even though the pitches are flat, however, we also have to be looking at that subject of 20 wickets as well.”It seems unlikely that Ryan Sidebottom will retain his place after he struggled in Barbados, claiming 1 for 146 off 35 overs. Sidebottom’s selection was a surprise because a few days before the match Flower had spoken about his “chronic” Achilles problem and the ankle washurting again afterwards. Given all Sidebottom’s injury issues in the last six months his long-term future must now be in doubt.Once certain change for the final Test is the return of Matt Prior behind the stumps after he flew back to the Caribbean following paternity leave. His replacement, Tim Ambrose, hit an unbeaten 76 in the fourth Test and kept tidily, but will now move aside with Prior a contender to bat at No. 6 so England can play five bowlers.

– Vamos pensar jogo a jogo, esquecendo eles. Lá na frente vamos pensar nisso, eles vão tropeçar no campeonato e temos que manter firme até o final

Return timelines for Celtic duo revealed

Christopher Jullien and James Forrest should be back available for Celtic in the ‘next couple of weeks’, according to The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin.

The lowdown

Jullien has been out of action since last December when he ruptured his cruciate ligament against Dundee United.

Forrest, meanwhile, was sidelined for much of the 2020/21 campaign with a stress fracture in his ankle and has encountered ‘muscular issues’ this term (via The Daily Record).

Former Scotland boss Alex McLeish says the return of Jullien will be a ‘massive’ boost for Celtic, while Chris Sutton has called Forrest ‘a huge miss’.

The latest

Devlin was asked for ‘the latest on the injury front’ in The Athletic’s matchday discussion ahead of the Motherwell game.

With Forrest and Jullien now back in training, their return should be fairly close.

Elsewhere, Josip Juranovic ‘could be back’ for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Ferencvaros, while the timeline for Greg Taylor’s comeback is ‘unknown’ after he underwent shoulder surgery.

The verdict: Great news

Jullien’s return will be particularly welcome. Celtic’s defensive vulnerabilities have been brutally exposed in their European games, and the Frenchman should elevate the whole backline.

There may be concerns about initial rustiness, but based on the performances of ex-Hoop Virgil van Dijk this season, he’ll be okay if his recovery has been properly managed.

As for Forrest, he may find it tricky to get back into the side ahead of Liel Abada, but will certainly boost Ange Postecoglou’s squad depth.

Cheetham and Mullaney send Emirates crashing

ScorecardLancashire swept aside the Fly Emirates part-timers in Sharjah to set up a Roses play-off game on Tuesday to decide whichof the rival counties will finish third in the Pro Arch Trophy for 2009. The floodlights at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium had barely warmed up by the time Fly Emirates were dismissed to lose by the landslide margin of 214 runs – the biggest defeat in the three-year history of this event.Pace did the damage as Steven Cheetham, who is 6ft 5in, took 5 for 12 in tandem with 24-year-old Oliver Newby (4 for 29), as both bowled their 10-over allocation straight through. The only Emirates resistance came late as No.9 in the order, Soheb Mujiani (16) and No.10 Rehan Adil (13) limped into double figures. They were the home batsmen to do so.Lancashire now face a third placed play-off game against Yorkshire at Sharjah on Wednesday.Man-of-the-match Cheetham, who won a free return flight to Dubai for his troubles, said: “I didn’t feel that I bowled too crash hot theother night, so it was nice to make amends. I wasn’t too bothered about pace; I was just trying to hit my goodlines and lengths because there wasn’t too much pace in the track.Steven Mullaney’s 121-ball 103, coupled with another good contribution from Paul Horton – freshfrom a century in Abu Dhabi last week – led to Lancashire’s 262 for 5. An injury to Mal Loye, who fell down a pothole and twisted his ankle at this ground last week, allowed head coach Peter Moores to experiment at the top of the order and give Mullaney his chance. After scoring his first century of the tour”I didn’t really envisage opening on the tour, but I mentioned to ‘Moorsey’ [Peter Moores] in a one-on-one meeting with him that I had done it a few times in Australia. When ‘Chappie’ [captain Glen Chapple] read out the team yesterday and said that I was opening, I was absolutely delighted.”I took my chance in a way, and hopefully it will lead to more things.”

Predicted Rangers XI to face Hearts

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers face off against Hearts at Ibrox today in a huge clash at the top of the Premiership table.

A win for the home side would see them move four points clear at the top, whilst a defeat would see them drop down to second with the Jam Tarts overtaking them.

The Gers beat third-placed Hibernian 2-1 prior to the international break, as Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos’ second half goals secured the three points.

How many changes will Gerrard make to the team from that victory? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make three changes to the side from the win over Hibs, with Jon McLaughlin, James Tavernier and Kemar Roofe all returning.

Firstly, we believe that McLaughlin will line up between the sticks. We published an article explaining why veteran shot-stopper Allan McGregor must be axed by Gerrard for this clash, and the former Liverpool captain could heed that advice and go with the 34-year-old today.

At right-back, captain Tavernier could return in place of Nathan Patterson. The teenage defender provided an assist against Hibernian and recorded a SofaScore rating of 7.6, which is why this is a difficult call to make. However, the experience (more than 300 appearances for Rangers) and leadership of Tavernier in a crunch game like this could be crucial for the Gers.

In midfield, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara and John Lundstram could retain their places in the middle of the park. We published a piece detailing Steven Davis’ woes for Northern Ireland on international duty, which is why he could be watching on from the bench for today’s clash.

Finally, Roofe could come in for Scott Wright to line up on the left of the front three, with Morelos through the middle and Ianis Hagi out on the right. The former Leeds striker came off the bench and scored against Hibernian and we previously discussed why he deserves to start.

Wright and Hagi both caught the eye against Hibs and it is not an easy call on who to drop out of the pair. However, the latter created five chances in comparison to Wright’s four and that gives him the edge for this match, with the Romanian keeping his place in the side.
