Haddin backs Lee to hit his straps

Brad Haddin has backed Brett Lee to return to his best despite taking only one wicket in Australia’s loss to South Africa in Perth

In less than a month Brad Haddin has gone from a man under fire to owning one of the safest spots in Australia’s Test side. Several of his team-mates do not have the same security and the lack of bowling threats in their crushing loss to South Africa in Perth has even left Brett Lee facing questions over his role in the side.Lee’s pace was down, his swing was minimal and one wicket for the match was a disappointing return. But Haddin said from his bird’s-eye view behind the stumps it was clear that Lee was not bowling as badly as his results suggested.”I have kept to Brett for a long, long time,” Haddin said. “In any fast bowler’s career they pick their times these days and bowl their spells when the game suits. I think Brett’s not too far away. I think the spell he bowled on day four just showed that it’s still there and that was an encouraging sign.”After Australia made only one breakthrough on the final day at the WACA, where South Africa chased down 414 with six wickets in hand, the captain Ricky Ponting said Lee’s lack of incisiveness was a concern. Lee was named in the squad for the Boxing Day Test, but Ponting chose his words carefully and did not guarantee Lee a position in the final XI.While most of the bowling was a worry, the top order’s failure to build a big platform in either innings also drew criticism from Ponting. Haddin’s form was not part of the problem and his breathtaking 94 on the fourth day continued his outstanding form after he made 169 in the previous Test against New Zealand.Another triple-figure score beckoned when Haddin launched consecutive sixes over long-on and long-off from the spinner Paul Harris and then followed with a four straight down the ground. It took him within one clean strike of his century and the desire to bring up the hundred with another six was all-consuming.Haddin was stumped advancing to Harris trying for one last six in the same over but he said looking back, his aggressive instincts could not be curbed. “In all honesty I’d like to say I would have done something different but, thinking now, I wouldn’t have,” Haddin said. “The adrenalin was going and to be perfectly honest, I couldn’t pull it back.”He finished the match with 140 runs after making 46 in the first innings and the continuation of his form from Adelaide was one of the positives Australia could take from the game. “It was [encouraging] from a personal point of view but at the end of the day you want to set your team up and you want to win Test matches,” Haddin said. “To contribute the way you did and not win a Test match is disappointing. But we go back and start all over again in Melbourne.”Losing was an unfamiliar feeling to Haddin’s predecessor Adam Gilchrist but Australia’s struggles this year have meant Haddin has entered the side at an awkward time. A series failure in India might be followed by one against South Africa.”I think it’s a great time to come into the Australian team,” he said. “Whenever you come in to represent your country is always an honour and I don’t think there’s ever a bad time to come into an Australian cricket team. The important thing out of it is that we’ve got a contest and this is what everyone has been craving – the fans, the players, everyone.”Australia have never come back from 1-0 down to win a three-Test series and the last time they lost the opening Test of a home series was in 1988-89 when West Indies went on to take the contest 3-1. Haddin said Australia could not be written off just yet. “We are not going to roll over, I can give you that,” he said. “Obviously 1-0 down – it puts more excitement on such a big series.”

Liverpool fans talk up Karim Adeyemi move

Some Liverpool supporters have talked up the idea of Karim Adeyemi joining the Reds, following a social media exchange with Harvey Elliott.

Jurgen Klopp had a quiet summer in the transfer market, only signing Ibrahima Konate and waving goodbye to the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri.

While Liverpool’s squad remains strong, there will come a time when reinforcements are needed, perhaps even in January, depending on the injury situation.

One player who the Reds have been linked with targeting is Adeyemi, who is making a name for himself at RB Salzburg, scoring 17 goals in 61 appearances to date.

Fuel has now been added to the fire after the 19-year-old sent Elliott his best wishes on Instagram [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], following the Liverpool youngster’s injury at Leeds United.

Sunderland begin Embleton contract talks

Sunderland have opened talks with Elliot Embleton regarding an extension to his current contract at the Stadium of Light.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun (via Chronicle Live), who claim that the Black Cats are keen to tie the central midfielder down to a new deal, despite the fact the club have the option to extend the 22-year-old’s current contract, which expires at the end of the season, for a further year.

However, it is believed that, in order to best secure the academy product’s future on Wearside, Lee Johnson would much rather extend Embleton’s current contract for a number of years rather than simply activating the club’s clause.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Embleton has been for Sunderland so far this season, the fact that the club appear to be extremely keen to tie the midfielder down to a new deal is sure to have left fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his seven League One appearances this term, the £4.3k-per-week man has scored two goals, registered three assists and has created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.1 shots and making 2.7 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player Max Power dubbed a “nightmare” for defenders average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as Johnson’s second-best performer in the third tier.

As such, it will hardly come as a surprise to Sunderland fans that the club are making moves to award the former England U20 international a new deal, as not only does Embleton appear to have the potential to be able to play a major role for the Black Cats in the years to come, the youngster could also be one of the main men in the club’s bid to finally end their spell in League One this season.

Suppiah residency bid rejected

Arul Suppiah, the Somerset allrounder, has had his application for permanent residency turned down and now has to return to Malaysia and apply for a work permit ahead of the 2009 season

Cricinfo staff22-Jan-2009Arul Suppiah, the Somerset allrounder, has had his application for permanent residency turned down and now has to return to Malaysia to apply for a work permit ahead of the 2009 season.Suppiah came through the cricket system at Millfield School before making his Somerset debut in 2002. Although he has failed to secure a regular first-team place, he has made himself a valuable squad player, especially in one-day cricket.”This is very frustrating for me because obviously I thought this was all done and dusted as I have been here in Somerset for 12 years now,” Suppiah told the Somerset website. “This is a bit of a shame but we have to now take things step by step.”I will use my time back in Malaysia as a chance to get outside and carry on my pre-season training on grass.”Chief executive Richard Gould added: “We think that Arul will be granted a work permit for this coming season, but at present we are uncertain beyond that. However we have got every resource and contact working to sort this out for us.”

Liverpool fans delighted with Keita news

A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted that Naby Keita is back in training ahead of the Champions League clash with Porto.

The Reds are back in Champions League action on Tuesday night, making the trip to Portugal for another important Group B clash.

Jurgen Klopp’s men beat AC Milan 3-2 in a thrilling contest in their opening fixture and this is a great chance to build on that victory.

There are a number of absentees for the game, however, with midfield duo Harvey Elliott and Thiago both missing on Tuesday.

Someone who is back in the fold however is Keita [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], having missed the Brentford game after picking up an injury away to Norwich City last week.

Katich impressed by 'mature' Hughes

Simon Katich is impressed with Phillip Hughes’ maturity ahead of his first Test for Australia

Every few years an Australian batsman comes along with expectations so high that it feels like he can’t possibly live up to the hype. Ricky Ponting made his Test debut at 20 and went on to be one of the world’s all-time top batsmen. Michael Clarke was already being mentioned as Australia’s next captain when he sparkled into the side at 23 and struck a century on debut.Phillip Hughes is in good company. Hughes, 20, was this week preparing for his first match representing Australia, in a tour match at Potchefstroom. He will make his Test debut in Johannesburg next week and according to his opening partner Simon Katich, who is also his captain at New South Wales, there is no question over his readiness.”He’s mature enough. Even though he’s so young, what I’ve seen from him in the last 12 months is that there’s a maturity there,” Katich said. “Regardless of the situation he just gets out there and does what he’s used to doing. That’s the key for any new guys into the team. They have to trust their games for what’s made them successful at the lower level and apply that to the next level.”Katich has been on the first-class scene in Australia for 12 years. He knows that when he began he did not have the maturity that Hughes displays and he has only seen a couple of batsmen who have had that poise at such a young age.”There’s only been a few in the last dozen years in terms of Ricky and Michael Clarke that have done that,” Katich said. “It’s a bit of a rarity. But knowing what he’s like it doesn’t surprise me too because right from the word go last year it seemed like he was made for playing professional cricket. He’s shown that in the last 12 months.”Both Ponting and Clarke endured difficult spells when they were dropped from the Test team early in their careers, so it’s entirely possible that Hughes also will have up-and-down periods as he makes his way. So far, it’s all been up. Since making his first-class debut at 18 in November 2007, Hughes has averaged 60.38.Most impressive has been the way he has performed in key matches. In last season’s Pura Cup final, he scored 116 in the second innings to help New South Wales win the title. This summer he piled on a match total of 233 in a Sheffield Shield game just days before this touring squad was picked. He is happy to absorb the pressure immediately on his Test debut, having volunteered to face the first ball.”The young bloke put his hand up for it so he’s definitely got it,” Katich said. “We did a bit of negotiating and I said I’d do the short-leg duties for him so we’ve come to a pretty good trade-off. He’s not fond of doing that so I put my hand up.”When Katich talks of Hughes as “the young bloke” he sounds like a proud father, which in a sense is not that far from the truth. Katich is 13 years older than his new opening partner and has been his captain at New South Wales for Hughes’ entire first-class career – all 18 months of it.”I’m looking forward to getting out there and opening with him,” Katich said. “We haven’t actually walked out together to open as such even for the Blues. Generally when we’ve played I’ve either batted at three or four. I’m pretty sure I haven’t actually opened with him.”That will be one of a few new experiences for Katich on this tour. Another will be playing his first Test in South Africa, where he has toured with the ODI side and an Academy squad. He must also get used to being the senior opening partner following Hayden’s retirement.”It’s a bit of a strange situation for me to be in given that only probably Ricky and Michael have played more Tests,” he said. “It’s interesting that sort of role reversal now – it means I’m getting old.”

-Eles têm a invencibilidade deles; nós, a nossa.
