Hutton shares Gers fears

Former Glasgow Rangers defender Alan Hutton has revealed he is worried about the lapses of concentration the Gers experienced during their Champions League third qualifying round defeat to Malmo.

The Lowdown: Gers lose to Malmo

The Gers had the chance to reach the Champions League group stages after winning the Premiership last term, and they faced Swedish champions Malmo in the third qualifying round.

However, the Light Blues lost 2-1 in both games, meaning they dropped down to the Europa League instead.

The Latest: Hutton shares fears

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton, who remains the Gers’ record sale (The Scotsman) since making the £9m switch to Tottenham in 2008 (The Mirror), shared his worries over the lapses of concentration.

He said it will be a big concern for Steven Gerrard at Ibrox:

“The biggest worry is lapses in concentration really, so far.

“I mean, if you go all the way back to the first game, those defensive mistakes. I thought Rangers had got rid of them, especially last season. They were so strong.

“To take the game back to Ibrox, they knew what they had to do. They started off really well. It’s the best I’ve seen them in a first-half performance in the competition.

“Malmo going a man down, everything was in Rangers’ favour. They came out the second half and they just didn’t look the same. There wasn’t the same intensity, they looked a little bit fearful at times.

“Whenever there was a lot of pressure on them, they didn’t look the same Rangers team to me. To lose two goals from two throw-ins, I think that’s what’s going to really hurt the most.

“I thought they eradicated those sort of mistakes a couple of seasons ago. To see them come back and then get nervous after that, that’s probably the most worrying thing for me. Probably Steven Gerrard as well.”

The Verdict: Need to improve

The worrying thing from those two matches was that the Gers effectively lost the game in the same way. During the first match, they conceded twice in four minutes at the start of the second half, while they shipped two in two minutes in the second clash.

If you want to compete at the highest level, you simply cannot switch off – the game can be won and lost in a matter of moments.

Gerrard will have been livid with this way his team imploded in a short amount of time not once but twice. Perhaps the current Gers squad just aren’t quite ready for the Champions League yet, but they still have the chance to reach the Europa League group stages instead if they can get past Alashkert.

In other news, Rangers fans rage at these club struggles.

Cricket Australia has called off this season’s women’s national Under-19 championship after only two states and a territory nominated teams for the tournament. The decision to cancel the tournament – for which only New South Wales, Victoria and Australian Capital Territory confirmed squads – comes just two months after CA handed out contracts to their female international players and six months before Australia host the women’s World Cup.”We’re very proud of our women’s cricket program,” David Gilbert, the Cricket New South Wales chief executive, told the . “We put a lot of resources into it. But there are times you just feel like you’re not getting support.”We have seen it happen bit by bit – states not fielding teams at every level. You just wouldn’t see that in male cricket. It shouldn’t happen in female cricket. We’re not talking about under-12s or under-14s. It’s under-19s, the step below top-level cricket. If I was a talented 17 or 18-year-old girl and it was my turn to play in the national championship, I’d be very upset about having this taken away from me.”Lisa Sthalekar, the Australian vice-captain, who made it to the national team through age-group cricket, said CA’s decision was upsetting. “To not have this tournament for the first time in decades is a shock,” Sthalekar said. “It doesn’t quite make sense when you’ve had CA saying publicly that the girls’ game is growing.”

Irani Cup drop prompted my decision – Ganguly

A day after announcing his retirement from international cricket, Sourav Ganguly said the decision came at the right moment

Cricinfo staff08-Oct-2008Stop speculating about my future – KumbleAnil Kumble, India’s Test captain, has asked the media to stop speculating whether he will follow Sourav Ganguly’s lead and retire at the end of the series. “I’ll let you know when my last series is. I’m someone who’ll take the call on that,” he said. “I’m not someone who’d like to announce before. I’d like to take things as they come. Let’s stop all this for now and let the players decide when they need to go.” Kumble, who turns 38 later this month, however said that this will be his last Test in his hometown. “I don’t know when the next one [here] is. I don’t want to look that far ahead. I’ll take one series at a time.” The earliest Bangalore will get to host another Test is during the series against Sri Lanka towards the end of 2009.A day after announcing his retirement from international cricket, Sourav Ganguly said the decision came at the right moment. “I just felt it was time for me to go,” Ganguly said on the eve of the first Test against Australia in Bangalore.Ganguly said he had not rushed into the decision and had arrived at it after he was ignored for the Irani Cup. “Obviously I can’t deny the fact that I was disappointed after the Irani Cup selection. To be honest, I felt I’d two outstanding years except the Sri Lanka series,” Ganguly said. For the record, Ganguly has scored 1667 in 21 matches at 45.05 in the last two years. Still he undercut the sense of sadness with wit.Asked as to why he was the most scrutinised among the Fab Five, Ganguly smiled and replied, “Probably people didn’t like my face.”On Tuesday, after briefing the media, Ganguly made the surprise announcement to call it a day. He said he didn’t want the attention focused on him since the series was the priority. “I didn’t want to make much of a fuss and that’s why I announced it at the end of the press meet because the series is more important,” Ganguly said.Asked if there was a sense of relief now, Ganguly said, “The pressure of doing well will always be there and that probably brings the best out of everyone. Whether it’s a relief or not, all I can say is I’ve not been sad.”Ganguly also rubbished all the rumours about him intending to stick around for a couple more years. “I’ve not said anywhere that I wanted to play for two years. It was picked from an interview a year ago after I played against Pakistan,” Ganguly said.Well aware of the fact that a lot speculation will surface about his decision, Ganguly said he wasn’t bothered about it. “I know what is the right thing and you will find out in due course,” he said.Picking his debut, at Lord’s in 1996, as the best moment of his career, Ganguly said if there were any unfulfilled expectations, it was the India’s loss in the 2003 World Cup final.

Leko has a shocker as Birmingham City lose

Birmingham City’s impressive start to the Championship season received something of a setback on Tuesday evening, as Lee Bowyer saw his side succumb to defeat in their second-round Carabao Cup clash.

While a loss in a competition that is not likely to be high on the 44-year-old’s list of priorities this season, the manner in which the Blues fell to a 2-0 defeat against Fulham could well concern the former Charlton Athletic manager.

Over the course of the 90 minutes, Birmingham failed to muster a single shot on target, had just 39% of possession and completed nearly 200 passes fewer than the visitors.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there were a number of disappointing individual performances in the fixture, none more so than by the Blues winger, Jonathan Leko.

Indeed, despite playing for the entirety of the game, the £1.35m-rated man managed no shots at goal, completed just 10 of his 16 attempted passes and touched the ball a grand total of 33 times – nine times fewer than Birmingham goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

The 22-year-old also lost possession of the ball on 17 separate occasions, won just three of his 10 duels – a loss percentage of 70% – failed to find his man with either of his one attempted cross or his one attempted long ball and was flagged offside once.

These returns saw the £5.1k-per-week forward earn an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.2, with no player from either team receiving a score lower than Leko on the night.

As such, considering the fact that the winger has started just one of Birmingham’s four Championship fixtures so far this season, it would very much seem as if the 22-year-old did very little against Fulham to convince Bowyer he is deserving of a starting spot in the 44-year-old’s side to face Barnsley this weekend, as the youngster failed his manager’s trust on Tuesday evening.

ICC president agrees to meet ICL officials

David Morgan will hold a meeting in London with representatives from the Indian Cricket League

The ICC has granted ICL the opportunity to present its case for official sanction, and Subhash Chandra, the Indian businessman who owns the league, will meet ICC president David Morgan in London. The meeting is expected to take place in the first week of October after which Morgan will report back to the ICC’s board of directors. The ICL will start its second season of domestic and international twenty20 tournaments on October 10.”The ICL had previously written to the ICC requesting its approval and now it has asked for this meeting, to which we have agreed,” Morgan said. “All members of the ICC board have been informed of this meeting and I will report back to those directors at the board’s next meeting, in Dubai on October 14 and 15.”Himanshu Mody, the ICL’s business head, said that they were still awaiting an official communiqué from the ICC on the meeting. “But we welcome the step they have taken in agreeing to meet us,” Mody told Cricinfo. It is learnt that Chandra, the owner of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited, which also owns the ICL, will be accompanied by members of the ICL management for the meeting during which the league will seek official sanction under Rule 32 of the ICC operations manual that pertains to authorised unofficial cricket.Currently, the Stanford venture in the West Indies and the Hong Kong Sixes tournament operate under this rule, but the ICL’s case is different as it has not been endorsed by the home board, the BCCI. The Indian board has, in fact, banned ICL players from all forms of official cricket and barred them from using any of its facilities.Yet, the ICL has managed to remain in the news by unveiling its ninth team last week, the Dhaka Warriors, comprising 13 players from Bangladesh, including six with central contracts. It has also received unexpected support from Sri Lanka where the board last week lifted its domestic ban on six ICL players, including Marvan Atapattu, the former Sri Lanka captain, and allowed them to play in the Premier League tournament this season. The ICL has been pressing the ICC unsuccessfully for official recognition of their unsanctioned venture for several months. Subsequently they requested the ICC for a meeting, and hinted at legal action if they ICC didn’t accede to the request. The ICC, meanwhile, has held several meetings of a working group it set up early this year to study the legal aspects of unofficial cricket.”All that has happened now is that the ICC has decided to hear Mr Chandra’s point of view,” a member of this working group told Cricinfo. “Everyone has the right to be heard. It doesn’t mean that the ICC has to agree to that point of view, or agree to any proposal. Any further discussions on this will happen after Mr Morgan reports back to the board on this meeting.”An ICC press release said that it will be making no further comment on this matter at this time.

West Brom dealt Okay Yokuslu transfer blow

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Okay Yokuslu back to The Hawthorns.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports (via Football League World), who claim that, despite having a loan offer knocked back for the Celta Vigo central midfielder, Watford are in continued talks with the LaLiga side regarding a deal for the 27-year-old.

Previous reports had claimed that West Brom were also in discussions with the Spanish side over a deal for the Turkey international, with Yokuslu thought to be open to a switch to the Championship if no Premier League sides were interested in his services.

Ismael will be gutted

With the recent departure of Romaine Sawyers leaving Valerien Ismael extremely short of options in the middle of the park, the fact that a deal to bring Yokuslu back to West Bromwich this summer now looks to be out of the question is sure to have left the Frenchman gutted.

Indeed, not only would the 27-year-old have plugged a gap for the Baggies, considering just how impressive he was in the Premier League last season, the Turk’s arrival would have provided Albion’s promotion hopes with a significant boost.

Over his 16 Premier League appearances last term, the £6.75m-rated man provided one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 2.2 interceptions, 2.4 tackles, two clearances and winning a whopping 7.9 duels per game.

These metrics saw the man Kyle Bartley dubbed a “tenacious” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.99, ranking him as the club’s fourth-best performer in the league.

As such, with Yokuslu clearly having the ability to play for a Premier League side, should Ismael have managed to convince the £31k-per-week midfielder to join his Championship outfit, it would not seem to be an overstatement to claim that the 27-year-old would have gone on to be one of the best players in the division come the end of the season.

However, with Watford appearing the closer of the two sides to getting a deal for the Celta Vigo man done, Ismael will now have to turn his attention in what remains of the summer transfer window elsewhere.
